Title: UKGTL Season 10 Readers Drives - Knockhill - Jul 26
Post by: Wiltshire Tony on May 07, 2010, 12:09:50 PM +0100
In case you have been away from GTL, there have been GTL lobby problems. But.... it's all fixed now!

This is what you do to connect to the server:

1) Download & run this HOSTS HACK (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg54518#post_hostshack)
2) Start GTL & select to the lobby
3) Register a new lobby account (I suggest the same name but with a blank email & password)
4) Log in with your new account & you should see a list of servers

:euro:

If this fix has not worked for you, then please check out this thread for more info/questions: https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=6869.msg119486#msg119486

But most importantly, do not suffer in silence (also, don't leave it till the Monday night ;)).

"Another cracking event from Goldtop for your pleasure"

All members welcome.

Grid/server capacity: 28

Practice: ~19:20 (60 mins)
Qualifying: 20:20 (20 mins)
Race: 20:40 (38 laps = ~40mins)

Track: Knockhill Download this (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg81636#post_knockhill)
Cars allowed: Alfa Romeo, Lotus Cortina. This race will be run using the UKGTL Skin Pack 1.8.0.0 (http://www.humyo.com/9240347/SimRacing.org.uk/UKGTL/Cars/SRou_UKGTL_Skins_1.8.0.0.exe) which will need to be installed prior to racing.

Time of Day Setting: 15:00
Start: STANDING
Tyre wear: Normal
Fuel consumption: Normal

Server: UKGTL RDs
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules.
(3) Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=253;theme=5)
(4) The AI control should be turned off so that you have control of the car at all times, including pitting. Your player file should therefore read
Autopit="0"
Force Autopit Off="1" // Forces autopit always off
No AI Control="1" // AI never has control over car

If you still finding pitting problematic, experience tells us that its less to do with positioning and more to do with approach speed. A slow approach to pit crew chief has proved most reliable.

Special Notes: Pole sitter may have trouble seeing the start lights. Suggest they have the countdown switched on.

Shame you can't make this one Paulo.

Alfa probably has a very slight pace advantage but just seems to be more of a handful than the tina, which should make for an eventful race. Hope we get a good turnout.

Great race, loads of dicing and chasing with Phil, Ade and Goldtop. lost sight of Navin early on, never saw him again.
I think Phil got a stop and go, I had one cut track, and played safer after that.

Great battle Legzy.
We were very close for most of the race. It seemed like the one behind was always a little faster. At least it was like that for me. When I was behind, I always seemed able to follow easily, and as soon as I was ahead you were all over me. In the end I managed to prevail. Just.

Well it's Monday night & I was in for a change :o. Was going to do some iR practice & remembered it's GTL night... Knockhill... nice.... Alfa v Tina.... even better! 8)

Was absolutely what I need from GTL these days, a race where I'm comfortable in the car & know the track already too.

Took a couple of laps to get in the swing of it again (it's been 6 months & I'm impressed GTL is still installed ), but I think I just about managed to pip Bill/Sid :-\, but they both did me off the line & I enjoyed the opening lap exchanges.

The race progressed & I had a good scrap with Sid till he lost it coming out the chicane under power. I then managed to build up about a ten seconds lead, but the car in front was another ten ahead :(. So after a couple more laps I held off on the home straight to allow Sid back as I'd enjoyed it earlier (I was here for a race after all).

Well I'm chuffed to bits I did. We were at it non stop for about 15 laps, brilliant stuff (bar a couple of worn tyres late braking moments from me). But I think Sid came out of all of them a few inches ahead anyway

Really great to get a run out in GTL again. More combo's like that & I'll defo be back come September 8)

Qualied P2 and got a little bogged down off the line. Held on through T1 and had a nice battle with Pelle for a couple of laps - real touring car stuff. Unfortunately the fun police gave him a stop/go so that was the end of that. Meanwhile Navin was doing his usual disappearing trick up front. I tried to close the gap but it was like trying to stop the tide coming in.

The rest of the race was then spent keeping the gap back to 3rd with Ade and then a late rush by Matt which was getting me a bit worried towards the end.

Congrats to Navin and Matt and nice to see a good turnout for this.

I think Phil got a stop and go

Indeed. No warning, just straight to the  :death:

I find the cut track warnings (or not) a bit bizarre at this circuit but it was a great race and nice to see a good turnout. Can't make the next two so see you in three weeks.

Anyone know who "Der Metzler" is?

I think Henry was giving him driving lessons during qualifying, wasn't he?

The Brits sure know how to make a great layout for a track!! Even if it's a little one.. Had a good start and was happy to see Goldtop and Pelle were fighting it out so I was able to get a decent gap in the first 2 laps. Was nice not to even think about tire wear or pitting. I truly love the little cars with their lack of power. All about momentum though the corners. A big congrats to Goldtop and Matt for their solid podium spots. And to all of the finishers. Looked like most finished and had good battles of their own :). FYI, A shame that Sqter had a power failure because I think we would of had a nice battle being so close before qualy. Maybe next time ;) Cheers :)

I find the cut track warnings (or not) a bit bizarre at this circuit but it was a great race and nice to see a good turnout.

We ran some Knockhill Mini races over at NoGrip a couple months back & turned the flag rules off (no cut tracks). It provided a much better race & the lap times were no faster than having the flag rules on. My pet hate in GTL is getting a cut track warning when you have made a mistake & lost time anyway  >:(

I was hoping to join last nights race, but didn't have time in the end.  :(

Having been away for the weekend, we had to do our weekly shop after work last night which was why I was late starting the server. Sorry bout that.

Also I had not had a chance to practise with the cars but knew the circuit well enough so thought I could blag it.

Chose the Alfa for a change and loved it's energy but my setup couldn't cope with my steering input and after a s/g and several off-track excursions and being lapped by some very fast cars, decided it was best to call it a day.

Nice to see some old faces back with us and an ever increasing entrant from the GTLDK boys. Shame about Sqter cos he was very very quick indeed!

Congrats to Navin and the pods and thanks to Goldtop for a very nice track/car combo.

BTW we will be back here again on November 8th https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=8143.msg144659#msg144659

I guess it's down to our heritage - wealthy enthusiasts commissioning cars from firms like Bentley, Riley, Singer MG etc; others building tracks on their property -Lord March (Goodwood) and Tom Wheatcroft (Donnington Park).  Then after 1945 we had a supply of old racing engines (MG etc) and a supply of Coventry Climax fire trolley engines together with young enthusiast engineers like Colin Chapman, Eric Broadley and Mike Costin.

Bill

All good points Bill but I'm suprised you omitted to mention the glut of airfields we had after WWII. Many went on to become fine racing circuits.

I find this track one of those, like Legzy said I know but I always find it's one where you get into the groove and have a good nights fun or you fail to find it and have miserable night.  As Navin said it's all about trying to keep momentum up especially through the chicanes and hairpin.

Practice and qualifying went well with battles with Henry, Legzy, Tony, n helle and others.  Qualified 10th, made a reasonable start - these cars are simple to get off the line with a proper clutch (right boot down, left boot up) my only problem being the guy in front or the one in front of the one in front - like a goods train stopping.  As usual I soon lost positions to the faster drivers, had a few offs but nothing car threatening.

After one of Henry's pit stop for a choc ice or something we proved that you can not go around the hairpin three abreast.  He caught me up as we entered the straight so I went to inside to make Henry go around the outside for the hairpin, keeping an eye on him to make sure he hadn't got far enough ahead to move back on line and Phil (I think) took my apex and knocked me into Henry who went off.  Sorry, I did go slow until you passed me.  Had two cut track warning, so had to go slower and try and stay on the track until the end - finishing 10th.

Bill

I was going to cover the airfield tracks Tony but decided that WWII caused a much more fundamental change in the world.  Technical development went ahead at great pace - we finished with better production techniques, materials, jet engines, radar, rudementry guidance systems and landing aids.  This made the world more accessable and air travel faster and safer.

Prewar motor sport was insular and confined to our own continent - Europe, Americas etc.  After globalisation started, in my view, the airfield tracks merely accelerated our involvement.  More speed, once lower more steamlined cars were produced meant more power required, the US V8 became a cheap option - Allard and AC spring to mind.  US Muscle Cars were imported and things just continued from there until we arrived at the current position.

Bill

Ps Subject for a thesis.  ;D
