Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?pid=7) especially the rules about in-game chat messages.
(3) You will need to install Power and Glory v2 from here (http://www.gtlw.co.uk/), 2.1 patch from here (http://www.gtlw.co.uk/) and enable terrain patch.
(4) Drivers are reminded that they must select ISDN as their bandwidth, otherwise the stability of every-one's connection will be reduced.
(5) P&G has no 'Pit Speed Limiter' function. You may go as fast as you like in the pits, but please exercise caution. Penalties will be handed out for causing contact in the pit lane. Use your best judgement when making your pitstop during the race.

This is a tight little track that was used in the UK in the 60's. Lime Rock is known as a bull ring.
This place is even tighter so please exercise extra caution and give each other room out there.

It looks like the sight where the track used to reside is now a sports complex. The track outline is in yellow.

The average finish spreadsheet has been updated. Movers include
  • goldtop --> Yellow
  • lelero --> Orange
  • Geoffers --> Orange
  • Hotkeys --> Orange

Should we create a new class for Ayrton? How about a Ford Cortina GT? Just kidding guys...
Incredible pace from both Ayrton and Manteos.

Raced this one a couple of times in gtl & it's not a favourite, but I'm massively looking forward to this after last nights excellent race at Charade!

Try to keep up this time Ade. :P

Yeah, I remember doing this'n with MARA too and as a sim-racing newbie getting a verbal roasting for reversing on to the racing line at some point in the race. I hope I've improved a bit.

I'm looking forward to this race. I like the Alfa Junior even better than the GTA ;D The track is fun to drive, and the track layout is very well suited for close fighting IMO. I'm curious to learn how fast the elite-drivers are doing laps here in the yellow group cars. My guess is, they'll be driving the mini for this track, but the way some of you guys can make that TR4 go fast still amazes me . . . very impressive.
IRL however I'm pretty sure it would get smoked by the mini on a track like this  ;D

After some initial testing last night I can confirm that the Mini and the Abarth are not the cars likely to do well at this venue.

Always enjoyed this classic british club circuit and the car choices suit the venue, even the Falcon, which last raced here in 1964. Wish I was in the group that could run a Cortina though.

Other good circuits in a similar vein are Mallory Park and Castle Coombe  ;)

If Marco takes the Arbarth you may have to revise that estimate.  ::)

He is greased lightening in the thing!

Make sure when practicing, you drive around the right way  ::)  Was wondering why my beautifully flowing laps in the Elite were not registering any times ;D

LOL

I've sat on board with the AI and it looks to be much the same shape as the GPL version.  Not a lot to learn here with regard to which way the next corner goes.

The little cars will do well here. If Marco runs the Abarth I expect him to be amazing. Ayrton and Manteos too. Here are some results from a race I did here a while ago in the Mini. Eduardo Prado is an amazing driver and Gary Tautfest is also very quick driver who happened to stumble on a very quick car through poor finishes. http://www.nasasimracing.com/schedule/show_event/5350#results

I might have missunderstood the rules, but unless you're in the top five from last race, you are free to drive the Cortina Tony !

Err its all in the first post. There are three classes and what you can drive is dependant on where youve been finishing. You need to refer to the spreadsheet link in the first post.

If its your first race you are limited to the slowest group

I think that Spanner has it right there.

His outing at Charade has earned him a place in the green group, from where he can drive any car from any of the groups.

Hotkey's outing at the previous two rounds has lost him the GTA 1600 as he has moved up to the orange band and new starters (ie Tony) start in yellow with all the other potential aliens.  ;D

I'm enjoying the ankle biters here but the pit exit is a bit lethal for a race where everyone has to pit.

got some laps in this eve after semi recovering from CLM.  :P

Did laps in the TR4 (1:02s). Elite (1:03s early) and Abarth (1:03s late)

Not sure which to take yet. TR4 is fastest but thirstiest, other two are good fun to drive and... (yawn) economic  ;)

I'll join for some practice Legzy ..... curious to check out laptimes. I've been doing as low as 1.01.33, but that was a one off  :(  mostly I  get laps just below 1.02.00.

Laptimes / starting position is not important for my race. I can't hit the top 3 in the quali anyway, so I prefer starting at the rear of the grid. I'll try to stay away from trouble early in the race and then avoid making mistakes for the next 55 min  ;D ;D.

Can't really figure out what tyres to use for the Alfa Junior -will the soft tyres last a full hour ?

CU tonight

Stig

I'm glad that you asked that question Stig, because I too have a lone 1:01.3 and have been beating my brains out trying to match it for a couple of days.  Thanks to your question I have just realised that I had dropped back to my older setup which was on the harder tyres.

1:01.8 is my best effort on the harder tyres but to get back to your question; whilst they may last I don't think that they will be very effective.  At Charade I felt that I would have been better off changing my fronts instead of trying to do the whole race on the one set of the harder tyres.

That being the case, I don't think that I stand a snowball's chance in hell of getting to the finish at Crystal Palace on the softer tyres without changing at least the fronts.  The front left is the one doing all the work on my car.  The front right is still cold after ten laps.

Hope to do some testing with you good folks tonight.

PS  Where can I put a fiver on Peppe for pole with something close if not under a 60 second lap?   ;D   No pressure Peppe mate!  :thumbup1:

LOL  Ah yes.  Another handicap bandit.  There is lelero to consider as well but Peppe has the 1600 Alfa to pay with.

Hmmm....   Going to need a first corner like Mark Weber!

Are you crazy Clive?!? Put a fiver on Peppe's pole position is a waste of money :P :P In Italy the bookmakers give him 1 to 50... LOL!!!

Til now 1.01.4 for me in race setup with the Triumph, and 1.01.9 with Abarth, but it's seems less competitive here cause of the long straights... So, I'll choose the TR4 :P

Apologies Mike, but I'm going to use this thread for a spot of free advertising ;D

Everyone doing PnG has a GTR2 disk, so why not come & try some Sunday night racing too. We're doing the excellent Albert Park this Sunday in the GTC class (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=8112.msg143984#msg143984). It's a cracking track that most of you will already be familiar with & there's a good range of GTC cars & some of them don't bite!

If any one's concerned that the GTR2 are too fast, there are still a couple of Aliens, but in recent seasons I've gone from being a back marker to someone challenging the podiums regularly. So standards must have slipped :P

The season will start in a couple of weeks & be made up of a sprint series & an enduro one. Hope to see a few of you giving it a try.

(Other PnG drivers that you're likely to already know there = Myself / Spanner / Lazlow / Goldtop / Mike / API / TT / MJ... you'll all beat MJ ;))

Hi Mike and welcome. As a new driver with us, you can choose any car from the yellow group. Might be an idea to have a quick test on the practice server to ensure you can connect ok. Shout up here if you have any trouble, someone will always be around to help.

Hope you're not as quick as our other Mike ;)

LOL Legzy. I love handicap racing.

Welcome Mike. Great to have you with us. Like Legzy and Goldtop said earlier, start with any car from the Yellow group. This is a handicapped series so the hot shoes are driving the slightly slower cars. If you were caning others in the Mustang, it sounds like you may be one of those hot shoes. If not, your average pace will put you into the car group that matches you against the others here. I'm looking forward to racing with you on track.

heh, i got the distinct feeling it was going to be one of those races that was never to be tonight!

3 attempts at joining all concluding with me stuck out in the outer pit exit with 3 other poor souls wedged in or upside down  :P Decided to take the abarth as it was shorter and so wouldnt flip on the pitwall when i joined the session unlike the TR4 that i wanted to use  ::)

Race was just watching the alfa fest etc disapear off into the distance. Thank gawd for Lazlows mini who gave me a great fun fight between the British and Italian minis  ;) as i was very off the pace in the Abarth never having raced it before, only managing late 1:03s or early 1:04 laptimes.  :(  It was great fun to drive, shame there werent more around me to race.

Then about half hour into the race there was a lovely car crash right in front of me involving an Elite and a 'tina or alfa, leaving me nowhere to go but into the metal sandwich full speed into a broadsided car. Smashed suspension and 40% engine health left. The little tyke didnt stand a chance

Good track and superb international turn out,  8) shame i couldnt be in a more competitive car (or one that suits me better anyway) to enjoy it more. Looked a blast up front and midfield.

Title: Re: UKPnG Season 3 Handicapped - Crystal Palace - Jul 15
Post by: Mike Miller on July 15, 2010, 09:17:51 PM +0100
I expected there might be a high attrition rate here tonight with so many cars on such a small track. That is the bad. The good is you are almost never alone on track. I struggled tonight in the race because the Elite simply doesn't have the power to execute a pass down the straight. Instead, I was swamped by alfa's and TR4's. I made many nice passes on the outside so I was pleased with that. Early in the race, I got tangled up in a 2 car alfa wreck into turn 2 (tight double apex left) taking on some damage, but the car was still drivable.

Since I couldn't get anything going tied up around so many cars, I decided to pit early. This put me just a lap down just behind the leader as I came out of the pits. I had a nice spot with only a few cars around me. It didn't take long for me to get into a groove. 2nd and 3rd were closing fast so I found a way to let them both by going into turn 2. A few laps later, 3rd place driver (don't remember the name) in a Cortina lost it, went off track for quite some time and then reentered and jumped onto the racing line straight away causing a wreck. My car was really wounded at this point with the wheel at 20 degree off center. I could still drive it and was chasing down Fulvio so I continued.

3rd and 4th eventually caught up and 3rd got by on the start/finish straight so I flashed my lights so 4th could continue the close fight. I gave the preferred line (drivers left) into turn 2, but the 4th place driver must not have seen the flash and drove right into the back of me ending my race with severe suspension damage.

I'm learning which cars work on certain tracks. The Elite is a mileage miser and needs open air to work well like the Mini and Abarth.

Fantastic turnout tonight with a lot of outstanding close battles on track near me. Maybe I can get some revenge in an Alfa Jr. next round.

GT was about 3rd with 5-7 laps to go... would have been a safe top 7/8 I think after a splash & dash.

Well, that wasn't quite as good as I'd hoped. Saw plenty of action in the 1st half, when it was like driving round the M25 on a Friday night ::)
But after pitting early at about 1/3rd distance, I didn't really get a chance to tangle with anyone again. :(

Due to drop outs etc, I think I wormed my way up to an undeserved 10th in the end.

Well done to the VDA team, very dominant again.

Slow driver in a slow car equalled one of the dullest races I've ever been in. Still it was nice to have a go at P&G after so long away.

Oh and a word to those who think that sitting on my rear bumper flashing your headlamps will make the me pull over immediantly. It won't.

So that was you in the inside of the last corner?  ;)

Countless battles with a lot of cars/drivers and all clean! No door barging or any other nasty stuff despite fast guys clearly losing out on straight line speed.

Had great fun but I think I must say farewell to the Alfa GT now.. :'(            ...    Hello back of the grid  ;D

Almost 6th Alex, sorry about pinching it on the last corner.  ::)

I had that planned from about three laps back and then you made it possible by belting the wall at the end of the straight.

Pit stops are CARP!

Like Tudor, I was third when I came in for mine, the first time!!!!

I found one of the manky coloured GTAs doing some country dancing in my pit space.  So after a do-si-do or two I had to give in and do another lap.

Then had some fun with Geoffers and Fulvio before finishing by chasing down Alex.

The circuit doesn't appear to be able to accommodate that many cars.  In qually, when I finally managed to land on my wheels in the outer pit lane, I had to reverse onto the track and then make a U-Turn to head in the right direction when I thought that all was clear.

Sorry for the contact Fulvio, I wasn't expecting you to come across after Geoffers had managed to get through.

Had some good fun with Bonni Massimo, Lorenzo and Paulo in the early stages, just a shame that my pit stop was messed up.

Started well, lost some places being polite, 60 mins race plenty of time to get revenge.
Was chasing SPanner I think, when a bunch of us caught Tim Robey, and there was some confusion about
lapping I assume, 'cos spanner got bounced around and ended up right in front of me, big thump, lots of damage
the rear was like on ice in right handers, got in a few people's way a bit, sorry, but I was struggling to keep
pointing the right way. pitted, changed everything and all repairs 90 secs stop.... then had some fun unlapping
myself with Ade then Legzy, poor finish beyond my control, fun all the same.
EDIT: Tim was just getting out of the way perfectly, Spanner did the gymnastics all on his own  :o

I think it's "bimbo nos" GT, but you should probably wait for somebody to confirm who's sure. :-\

I thought it was about time I turned up for a race, I knew I would have a torrid time, in a slow car at a track I've not raced at before.

I spent most of the race on my own trying to keep out of everyone else's way, the only person who was at a similar pace was Tony but he pitted early on and I pitted late so we never saw each other. I did get a 30s gap when I pitted but it wasn't enough, and I just tootled round at the end...

Matt, I could see you were racing each other and decided to keep out of your way  but I think spanner overdid it into the corner spinning into your path. Better luck next time Matt :(

Hopefully this means I can grab a faster car next time round  ;D

Legzy is right Goldtop. Massimo Bonni is "bimbo nos" :)

For me this was a really exciting race, fighting with a lot of people, all extremely correct!!! Unfortunately at the second lap, someone gone into the wall, and I couldn't do nothing to avoid him... so I had to go all the race with a broken suspention, trying to come back from the 11th position, and after another mistake, I had to come back again from the 13th or 14th position.

That was a good chance to have some fights, and even with a broken suspention, cause I already saw in snetterton that was possible to go without a suspention, so I enjoyed this race so much. At the pit, as ever I've done my usual refuel and without changing tyres and repairing my car I went straight to the checkered flag. In that way, as ever I managed to gain a lot of positions during my pit, and I finished my race in 4th position... not a bad result seeing what happened at the second lap :)

Really appreciated this kind of race, if drivers are correct, that's a cracking track for some fights! Thanks as ever to Mike & GT!! Really nice stuff!!!

Grats especially to Bonni that brought the little scorpion in 3rd position, and to Gavino & Lele for their impossible race pace.
3rd race and 3rd double is a great result for team classification, and this time 4 VDAs in the first 4 positition... What can I say more about these guys!

Great to see a full server for this one, well done guys!  ;) ;)

Cu for the next! Bye!

Good fun that race, short tracks always provide plenty of action, just a shame there was a bit of a problem with pit space.

Happy to finish 8th after starting 16th, had plenty of good paint swapping battles particularly in the early laps & also towards the end trying in vain to stay ahead of Clive :(.

Sorry to Tim who I pushed into the barriers while lapping at the final turn late in the race, the car just got away from me on the brakes.  ::)

Congrats to the VDA boys on another dominant performance, I think the rest of us need to up our game a bit

Well done to team VDA for a dominant performance  8) I wonder if PnG3 will have a Reliant Robin ;)

Well guys, before you all been in 3rd place, that was where I was before I went to pits. With a confortable gap for Clive's 4th position, I must add. However, my pit crew seems to be with more attention to the race than to my car and for several times I went back and forward and back and right and left and forward and left and up and down (up and down maybe not...) waiting for a sign from them, nothing!!!! I shut down the engine 5 times for their work adding fuel...nothing! I'm beggining to feel highly annoyed with GTR pit procedures.
I didn't pit when the blue light turned on for pitting, I cancelled the pit request because I wanted to pit in the 30 mnt time. Lap before pitting I requested the stop pressing the key I have for it. Therefore, I did all right, apparently. It's really annoying and frustrating, two races with the same issue with P&G, when I ran GTR2, it always worked fine...on the positive side, I will be in the green group again next race...if I join, the odds now are very low to race again P&G.  >:(

I hope you all had fun.

Cheers

Hi Paulo,

Hope to see you at Westfield, or whatever it's called.

I guess that PnG had allocated us the same pit box.  I could see you trying to get some action out of my pit man.  Perhaps if I hadn't signalled that I was coming in then they would have dealt with you first.  Anybody's guess.  I think it is a track issue rather than a PnG issue.

They were on their toes when I returned the following lap.   ;D

Whilst I enjoyed the racing, the pit stop just took the shine off it.  I was more on the pace here than at Charade and should have done better.

I think that Crystal Palace should be binned until the pit issues are sorted.  Several of us had trouble getting out of the pits to qualify and were in great danger of being disqualified if PnG did not like what we were doing.  I noticed one Elite coming out of the pit entrance and making a U-turn onto the track whilst I was qualifying.

Talking of pitstops, how do some of you guys do your pitstop so fast? I had everything set up before the race with XD, fuel, no tyre change etc. All I had to do was turn off the ignition & cancel bodywork repairs, all went smoothly (for a change) & yet my pitstop laptime was still some 15s slower than some others!  ??? I guess I need to practice pitting.  ::)

PR & Clive, do you request a pitstop? I just drive in & the pitcrew are there waiting.

I have a sneaky feeling that I don't have to but I do it just to be on the safe side.

In my early days of PnG, ie practice for my first race at Riverside, I did just drive into the pits unannounced and nearly ran over my little man who was legging it across the pit apron to get to my pit box.

Guys, there are some issues during the pit stop, but til now, I always followed the same procedure:
1) I call the pit, and I'm sure that they are ready only if the pit blue light is ON (you can see it on the bottom left of your screen)
2) To save some time, I use to turn off the engine some meters before to stand in my pit place, that let you to save another 2 seconds
3) The only thing that I've to do when the pit list appear to me is to push Enter, because I've just prepared everything with the XD Motec.
4) Turn on the engine only after the refuel is completely finish, or you won't leave the pit, til the crew will finish. If you accidentally restart your engine before the pit crew has finished to refuel, you have to turn off it again til they will put the fuel amount set on the pit list.
5) Gogogogo

I don't know how Geoffers lost 15 seconds by other drivers, but even Bonni that is a pit newbie, had lost 8 seconds by me during his pit, even if he needed less fuel than me... So the difference is how faster you arrive into the pit, how fastly you turn off your engine and push Enter, and how fast you are to turn it on again and leave the pits at full throttle... exercising caution to the other cars obviously.
The other difference is on the amount of fuel you need to refill, considering that 2.5 litre added = 1 second in GTR2 & P&G

A good training should be that of make some pit stop during the practice sessions on your server, and we can try to see how much time you waste respect of us... but I'm sure that it's only a matter of training, and I'd like to fight an equal with my opponents :)

Cu :)

Are you comparing like with like Geoffers?

My final stop was longer than intended because I had forgotten that I had played safe and set it up to change my front tyres.  But I had also set it up to fill the tank and that wasn't necessary.  I finished with eight laps of fuel on board.

The thing is that the Elite and Arbarth brobably only needed a teaspoonful of fuel to finish the race if they ran 'til nearly empty.

I usually spend all my time messing with the setup and then the pit strategy is a last minute guess.  ::)

Also, the timed race makes me a bit nervous of cutting things to the bone.

All in all, this format takes a lot of preparation.

I guess all the little bits add up to quite a lot. A bit slow coming into the pits (2-3s), I had to negotiate a car in the pit before mine on the way in (2-3s), cancel bodywork repairs (1-2s), didn't cut engine until after the pitboard (1-2s), had to slow on exit & take to the grass as the leader was coming past (3-4s) plus other fractions here & there & there is 15s lost.  ::)

Just need more practice I think.

In addition to what Manteos said regarding pits I map 2 buttons for the start procedure; 1 for the ignition and a 2nd for the starter. Upon entering the pits, I kill the ignition and then fully stop. Once the crew starts to fill the car, I turn the ignition on and then wait for the fuel to finish before hitting the starter button. I haven't tested to see if this makes any difference in time. I set it up this way because in my real race car, the ignition and starter are different switches so it takes extra time toggle both. I got comfortable with it this way over time too.

The other thing I noticed is if you deny that auto pit request too many times strange things can happen. Since I started pre-setting 8 pit stops with the same fuel load in the advanced setup window, I no longer experience the strange behavior Paulo experienced.

Like Manteos said, all it takes is a bit of practice to get comfortable with pit stops. Practice 10 per event and you'll have it down in no time.

Sorry about that accident Matt. I'd forgotten why i disliked the alfa and that was the braking either being too far forward or back with no room inbetween so i was frequently sideways into both the second corner and the one at the end of the back straight. I'd managed to work it out in the middle of the stint and be very gentle with them but would frequently mess it up when trying to race people. Shame, i think i was on for a good result. Probably should have kept softs on te rears as the difference in wear/ grip front and back wasnt helping.

I've never known the race to be so crowded, the first few laps were manic just trying to avoid people and work out where the brake or how sideways they get!

Shame about the track not working well with 26-28 people. Bit of clarification would be useful about pit lane right of way, never had any issue during the race as there werent many in pitlane , and i guess i'm not used to it, but presumeably i have to wait for people to go past before pulling away?

Yes Mike is right, I forgot to say you have to map before your ignition key, but I mapped only the ignition, for me the starter is not needed, cause the ignition makes both these functions, and I don't want to fight with the buttons to turn on my car. Make this try Mike ;)

Coming back to Clive, as ever I suggest not to change your tires in every case, especially if you're going to change only front or rear tyres. In your case, changing the front tyres means that you will experience a bit more power oversteer cause of your worned rear tyres, at the opposite changing only the rear tyres you would have experienced a lot of understeer, without considering that you had lost other 12 seconds to change 2 tyres.
Going on even with worned tyres is always better in a 1 hour race, because it's impossible to gain 12 or 24 seconds (depending on how much tyres you change) on your pace after the pit. Ade is a brillant example of how a good pit can let you gain a lot of positions, he was even faster than me in his pit stop, and I'm sure that he didn't changed his tyres. Considering that before the pit stop he was in 10 th or 11th position, that shows the advantage of making only a fast refuel than go! Remember that in P&G you can drive even with worned tyres without losing so much time. My race pace was 2-3 tenth for lap slower than with new tyres, that means I' ve lost only 7-8 seconds respect my first laps, and the XD Motec at the end of the race showed me a tyre consumption of 20. Sometimes is happened to me to arrive with an even higher compsuntion, but the tyres were good til the end, and even with a value > 30 the car was still drivable with a bit more caution.
However guys, remember to train in pit procedures, and you'll see that you won't lose so much time anymore.
Bye bye!

I didn't change any tyres at Charade and suffered at the end of the race with understeer.

I was quite pleased with the extra grip on the front in the second stint, it enabled me to be more agressive.  After having to do two pit stops I needed to be.

As you say though, the extra grip on the front was probably not worth 12 seconds.  Had I been able to pit on my first attempt then not changing any tyres would have been the best option.

Not putting the extra eight laps of fuel in would have helped too.  ::)

No WOrries Spanner, I expect you would have prefered not to bounce off the wall big styley
I got shoved into the wall by another Alfa earlier that seemed a little careless at the time and bothered me more
I don't bother with incident reports anymore, the last one was 3 months in the oven before I got word  ::)
only time one has been dealt with the same week was when a director was part of the incident.
People here mostly drive fairly, we are racing after all, and no one wants to give up a corner  ;) so things
happen now and then.

I think that might have been me Matt, sorry. I got a run on about 3 cars onto the back straight & when I braked for the corner at the end I locked the fronts a bit & understeered & bumped the TR4 on the outside which I think might have been you. Didn't realise I had pushed you into the wall. Very sorry.  :(

I remember that one. All I could think of was David Hobbs saying "this is going to end in tears" as 2 cars split me left and right. I made it through that one. I don't think Matt had any idea Geoffers was barreling up the inside. These ankle biters produce nail biting moments.
