Title: Iron Man Endurance Race (69 Mod) - Brands Hatch (GP) - Aug 31
Post by: vosblod on August 27, 2010, 02:04:14 PM +0100
“Sure I am this day we are masters of our fate, that the task which has been set before us is not above our strength; that its pangs and toils are not beyond our endurance. As long as we have faith in our own cause and an unconquerable will to win, victory will not be denied us.”
If you think you have what it takes plus a comfy chair join us for another battle royale, this time round Brands Hatch for 82 laps on PRO; girlie wirlies need not apply. Be thankful GPL won't let us do more laps then that without fuel issues...

WARM UP: For those a bit rusty with the 69 Mod there will be an informal warm-up race at Spa this Sunday 29/8 at 9pm. Int-Long.

Remember fun races are not moderated and open to anyone.

In 1926, a group of cyclists stopped to investigate a mushroom field near West Kingsdown in Kent and quickly appreciated the natural bowl that they found there. With the permission of the Brands Farm landowner, Harry Write, it was used as a cycling circuit. The first actual race on the circuit was held in 1928, over 4 miles (6.4 km) between cyclists and cross-country runners. Within a few years, motorcyclists were using the circuit, laying out a three-quarter mile anti-clockwise track in the valley. It was used as a military vehicle park and was subject to many bombing raids during World War II. After the war Brands Hatch Stadium Ltd was formed in 1947 with the circuit being surfaced in April 1950 to create a 1-mile oval course suitable for cars. In 1953, a new loop was added  which extended the circuit to 1.24 miles and introduced the new Druids hairpin.
The Grand Prix Circuit opened in 1960. Jack Brabham won the first race on the new 2.65 mile track with Graham Hill 4.4 seconds behind in second place. In 1964 the circuit staged its first Formula 1 World Championship event, which was awarded the status of European Grand Prix and won by Jim Clark. Thereafter Brands Hatch alternated with Silverstone for the British Grand Prix until 1986.

I'd love to take part (after checking my Pc's power settings from the issues I had at the last endurance race), but I can't make tues or weds.  Could you please schedule summat on other days?

Cheers,

Bob

Are you certain all cars in the mod, with their specific fuel consumption, can manage 82 laps going flat out?

GPL was showing a max of 94/95 laps for the cars I checked so knocked off a dozen or so to be on the safe side. I'll check all chassis.

Tom,
Provisionally I'm thinking about 3 x 69 races for the Spec season. Thats 2 more than last season.

Nearly a minute clear, 7 laps to go..

And GPL crashes  :censored:

I'm so *****d off now it's almost unbelievable  :nuke:

Congrats to Tom as it looks like you're about to win, also to Al, Goran, and who-ever else may or may not still be circulating.

A big :notworthy: to Fulvio. After 20laps my left ankle was killing me due to the incessant gear changing, after 50 my right knee was seriously starting to ache aswell due to barely moving from the 'standing on throttle' position.
To have managed over half the race so soon after breaking some bones must have taken some serious effort :angel-wings:

BLOODY SCREEN FREEZE! 7 laps to go of a sodding 82 lap race & the bloody screen freezes. Why couldn't it go on lap 1 & save me all the aggro?! I was in a nice comfortable podium place too... AAAAARGHHHHHHH!!!!

EDIT: just saw FMG's post - bad luck Tim - looks like we both got kicked off at the same time.

Sorry to hear re Al and Tim - as there were three finishers I'm afraid it doesn't count as a mass disco. Gutted though, I know how it feels

unoficcialy I see the results as  FMG first me second Al third and THS (the horrible swede) at 4th. I looked at rpy and you loose conn simultanously.may I ask wether you use opengl or d3d?I still havent changed to the new d3d but I seem to have far less freezes than others.edit: and what do you use gøran and pod? maybe we can get a pattern here...

I had a great time racing with Al in my tow first half of the race. I decided to try to put preassure on Tim who was 30 secs ahead with around 40 laps to go. I could decrease my times with around 0.5 secs(according to rpy. I didn t use prib) but not more and when I tried I only started to do small mistakes here and there so I gave it up before I did something stupid.

with 7 laps to go It was 50 secs up to Tim and around 40 down to Al when they dissapeared. seemed to be another 30 from Al down to Gøran.I cruised in to my officialy second ironmanvictory in a row   .
Honestly I feel more like I came second but that is also a result I m very pleased with. 82 laps and no spins :)

After a very closely fought out Qualifying I was expecting an exciting battle and close racing which would've made the laps pass by quicker, but that didn't turn out to be the case.

Had a 3 seconds lead at the end of lap 1 which then kept increasing by about 2 seconds a lap in the early stages and then stabilized to about 1 second a lap. Can't say I was pushing too much, just trying to not stress the engine too much and take big risks in corners.

Maybe my setup suited the race trim better, with the fuel load and stuff. Had 10 front wing and 12 rear, and raised up the ride height by a centimeter and a half which helped a lot to avoid excessive bottoming, even if it was going to make the car a bit slower near the end of the race.

Honestly I got a bit bored and this not being a championship race (or a race with any reward :P ) led to loss of concentration at 2 moments, both at the same place - the end of the backstraight before the right-hander.

The first time the car survived the collision with the banking, but the 2nd off some 20 laps later flipped the car over and that was it.

Grats to Tom for winning and commiseration to Tim for retiring so late in the race. At least you two seemed to be having a good dice behind.

I have never finished a 82 lap race before so I am quite pleased. Due to Al and Tim having computer related problems, (did you get any sleep after that?), I got second but for me it feels more like I got 4th because I had no chance to keep up with the front runners speed. OK, so I had better fastest race lap than Al but my speed overall was not that great and the first part of the race I was lapping around 1.30,s.

My whole approach for the race was to try to finish, so I used a stable setup and did not push that hard. In pretesting offline I was down to high 1.25,s but in quali I did take it a bit easy because I did not like the idea of being in front of too many eager racers. The way it went was that I still got too many fast drivers behind at the start and there were some problems. The fact is that I don`t have any memory of what really happend in the first part of the race, and I don`t have a harddrive big enough for the replay   :-[.   But I have heard that I ruined John`s race so I am very sorry for that. Did I mess up anything else?

Anyway the "THS" are using D3D V2 Tom and you may have a point because I was running OpenGL V2 before and even if it never was any problems at UKGPL I had screen freezes with both GPLRACER and AusGPL, and after I changed so far it`s been OK.

Sorry H, I was much quicker than Tom in the opening stages but as it was a long race I wasn't going to make any rash moves. Add to that Al making a go at me on lap 2 (took nearly a lap of side-by-side shinanigans to get rid of him :hammer:) and it took something like 5-10laps before I got clear.
Without your draft I'd never have been able to gain on you in the Brab, so I wasn't suprised I could only slow your advance  :ninja:

Unfortunatly I caught Fulvio at exactly the wrong place on my Senna lap in qually, having gone green in the first 3 sectors (indicated 1:25.5 if I only broke even in the last sector) I lost time entering the S/F straight.
I would have been 2nd, possibly even pole otherwise and able to hang on to your shirt tails  ;D

Tom: I'm running V2 direct X here. Gpl hasn't crashed on me before using this so it's possible it's just some random bug  :(

I'll happily accept the unofficial win though  ;)

I have just returned from a business trip that was looming for me when we started the Iron Man race. I knew that I had to be up (very) early next morning and had a couple of hard days ahead of me. But I wanted to take part in this first loooong race, so I dragged an old setup out and added some fuel to join the fun.

Just read the reports, and really feel sorry for those who were disco'd so close to the finish, that has to be so frustrating :-\

Unfortunately we had a few sever issues which delayed the start ( no-ones fault, I know these things happen  ::) ) .

By about 10:30 p.m. UK time, I think we had completed some 20 odd laps of the race, and on that schedule a bit of quick mental arithmetic suggested we were looking for a finish somewhere towards 12:00.

I cannot say that I quit, because I didn't, I crashed out ;) but I had already decided that I might just try a few more Banzai laps and then retire gracefully.
