Title: MODS & ROCKERS FUN RACE - Sep 14
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on September 01, 2010, 09:37:39 PM +0100
Mid-season mayhem is back. Yes it’s the return of Mods & Rockers. Two teams of GPL’ers will go head to head – trading insults & fast laps.

Slight variation this year – which will see the teams each driving the same chassis. Depending  upon which team you are picked for you will be driving to the 65 Cooper or BT7 (have set up for both). Historically Mod & Rockers would gather on Brighton sea front on a Bank Holiday for a good old fashioned punch up. As we GPLR’s are all rather too old & civilised for such behaviour and there is no race track at Brighton we will relocate a few miles up the road to Goodwood (Lord March’s gaff = very posh).

Team will selection will work as follows. Captain of the Rockers will be me (Billy). Opposing team captain on the last Mods v Rockers race was Vos. Rather than let him beat me again I shall nominate a Captain – it could be anyone who turns up.  The opposing Mods Captain has a momentus decision – you can either pick the chassis (Cooper or Brabham) or have first choice of driver. Its then like picking footy teams in the school playground – Captains take turns to select from the assembled cast.

No registration required. In the event of more than 20 drivers we will run two grids – everybody will get to drive. I will give instructions on splitting the grids on the night.

Those wishing to participate simply turn up in the playground (UK GPL chatroom) for 9pm on Tuesday 14 September.

This is a team event so the race will be run on Pro settings with the usual points scoring (See Wacky Races post for more information).

If you don’t have the track – download here - http://gpltd.bcsims.com/?dis=G&menu=Show_Letters.

Update - it has been suggested that since this is a team event that we have a Password to avoid last minute gatecrashers. Good idea ~ PLEASE NOTE the Password will be given out in Chat before the race starts - so pay attention.

I suggest posting it in here as well in case some people join late.

Isn't Goodwood a bit buggy? (he says still smarting after getting a screen-freeze 75 laps into the Brands Ironman race...)

I recall it caused a mass disco & screen-freeze frenzy during the last 67 interleague race we had there, though I can't remember if we had lots of problems during the 65 Spec race this season.

I think there were a couple of discos in the 65 Spec Race but the majority finished. We ran 2 grids so that was 4 races. Anyone else think Goodwood is risky?

You have to take them with a pinch of salt as maybe a one off but I use these; http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=4540&st=0 (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=4540&st=0) / http://forum.gplracer.eu/topic.php?id=50&highlight=&page=1& (http://forum.gplracer.eu/topic.php?id=50&highlight=&page=1&)
GPL Racer says freezes in 66/69's and SRMZ say 'medium' risk. TBH as long as we have a back-up track it's a fun race so let's do it. Another league race might need more testing...

I've had more stable races than bad races at Goodwood, so I wouldn't say it's too risky. I really like the track as well, so I'm up for giving it a go.

It was an attempt at sarcasm, granted the sooner sarcasm [ ] tags are implemented the easier it will be.

Short answer: yes, long answer: yes when my internet connection and driving allows for it. ;)

Thank heavens for that.....I mean that's a shame, make sure you come back after and bring a few Uni mates too.  More drivers needed :)

To try and ensure maximum enjoyment for most people I shall be racing that night at Goodwood (offline)

Try not to be too relieved. Have fun.

Paul,
Its a fun race - drivers of all abilities are welcome & probably good practice before the official league races begin.

Paul, as Billy says it's all for fun.  You may find you are not far behind some of the other novice drivers.  These races are normally well supported by a wide variety of the regular drivers giving a much better spread of abilities compared to the fun races you have tried so far where it was mostly the more experienced and faster drivers that turned up.

I think you may find this more encouraging with some closer competition for you.  Try and get some practise in before next week and you'll soon start getting more speed with some track time under your belt.

Paul, link as promised.  These were recommended as default setups some years ago.  They are quite soft and stable so they may be useful as a good starting point.

Try them out, if you don't like them don't feel obliged to use them but they may help.

good luck

With no resets - might not get too much experience  :'(

Recognize your current limit and drive within it, even if it's slower and frustrating. I know I said you should go as fast as you can and keep restarting so you can improve rapidly, but that's for offline practice - it does no good in races. In order to gain racing experience the opposite applies there - it's mostly to do with improving consistency and looking after the car (engine, clutch, tires). So... ignore everyone else during the race, at least emotionally, seek to find your own rhythm and stick to it once you achieve that. Takes time to sink in, usually a couple of laps.

Okey doke. Thanks for the advice - I can run (reasonably comfortably) at about 1:32 so that should give me about six laps on my own before I see the dreaded blue flags.

You don't really have to do much when you see Blue Flags. Just holding your line and not making sudden moves is usually enough. If you want to let someone through easily you could lift up slightly when they're going around you on a straight or sacrifice a corner exit by keeping the inside and letting the rest go by on the ideal line. Depends where you get caught. In any case, don't let getting lapped get to you and accept it as something you'd have to do forever... I see some people who see themselves as backmarkers rather than racers and it's a wrong mentality IMO.

Paul remember to mount the gravel tires  :)

Just kidding. As Hristo says, you gain more experience from an actual race than hotlapping forever.
Ciao

My main issue is that sometimes in trying to be helpful I end up spinning so I will just have to hold my line and let you guys deal with it

To quote Aragorn from LOTR TTT "Show no mercy, for you will not get any!". Just kidding, but it's racing - your interests come first, so don't sacrifice your race for others if not absolutely necessary.

Paul - keep driving you will get faster - honest.
BTW - my quallifying time of 1.20 was caused by a blip on the connection - I'm not that fast.

Team results as follows
Driver   Team   Points
FMG   Rockers   30
Beefpie   Mods      25
Evilclive   Mods      21
Steve Bird   Mods      18
Natan   Rockers   16
John Roberts   Rockers   14
Maddog   Rockers   13
Goran Jonsson   Mods      12

Dilema - the Rockers have more points but they had an extra driver ??
I'll just refer to the Moderators
Billy - who won?
THE ROCKERS !!! In a good old fashioned scrap it doesn't matter how you win.

So much for perceiving it as just a fun race.  ::)

Certainly was a fun race, great dicing with Tim and Evilclive in particular right to the end and a podium finish  despite unforced errors, certainly want to see the replay of that one.  :)

Well done to the rocker's team, glad to see it was close run of course despite the mods being a man down.  :P

Much appreciated as per usual, I look forward to racing in season 20 whenever I can.

Good to be back on track, after my previous rig self-destructed.  Which meant, a bit of test session was this, with obstacles to overcome . . . and I noticed how some of you obstacles were rather fast!

Some early mistakes, and several entertaining tussles along the way, made for a worthy christening for my new stripped down, racing PC.  I must remember to remove the various tools and oddments, used to assemble it, from my desktop before racing next time though.  They started raining down onto the floor mid-race, just as things were getting interesting!  I hope no-one ran over the hammer . . . grumble! :o

Had a great race, the fights with Joe (Beefpie) were great fun.
We were very closely matched, my slight advantage probably stemming from my Rockin' Cooper ( ;D ) and this made it very hard for either of us to make moves that would stick.

Joe's real life racing experience is easy to see as I said in chat afterwards, he excels at putting his car exactly where you want to go! :hammer: while at the same time knew exactly when I was coming alongside and made room  :)

It was truely an honour to have such a clean fight
We also managed what I think was a first in UKGPL history and took the chicane side by side in the closing stages of the race  :notworthy:

Well done to the Rockers for the win - Metal will prevail!  ;D

Commiserations to the Mods, parker jackets and mittens are no defence against leather coats and big boots!  :P

Steve - will post the replay soon. My connection was not great but I managed about 4/5ths of a lap before contact with Natan finished my race. No complaints - there was good clearance and it was a warp issue.
