All members welcome.

Grid/server capacity: 28

Practice: ~19:10 (60 mins)
Race 1 Qualifying: 20:10 (20 mins)
Race 1: 20:30 (30mins). Race 2 (30mins) follows shortly afterwards with reverse grid.

Track: Zandvoort (Club)

Cars allowed: Caterham CSR200

Time of Day Setting: 14:00
Weather: DRY
Start: STANDING
Tyre wear: Normal
Fuel consumption: Normal

Server: UKRACE07 CRC
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules.

Special Notes: We are also going to test the addition of 5 AI cars in this race. Depending on feedback/preferences, we might include these in the forthcoming series.

If somebody can provide instructions on what I'd need to do once I've installed Race, then I'll be there?

Mr Goldtop will be along shortly to do just that (I hope).

BTW I think you need Race07. I don't know if Race is the same or not.

Welcome to the world of Caterham.

This is a pre series event to test the race format and to allow us to refamiliarise ourselves with Race 07.

To take part, you will need a copy of Race 07 or GTR Evolution or Race On (both of the latter include Race 07).
This test event uses the Zandvoort Club layout which is included in the game and doesn't therefore require any
further downloads.

The 14 race series which will follow this test event will be a replica (as far as possible) of the 2007 Motorsport
News Caterham Roadsport Challenge. We will be using the Caterham CSR200 cars which are a little quicker than the
actual cars used and the 7 events will follow a similar 2 race format. Race 2 will be reverse grid with the top 8 positions from Race 1 being reversed.

The practice server is now up and running, so hop on for as much fun per bhp as you can handle.

I'd like to say a big thanks to Wiltshire Tony without who's help I'd have never been able to put this together 8)

I'll hopefully be there for this one GT. :)

Thanks for your work in putting this together.

Just had a look for the server to check I've got everything installed correctly (GTR evo) but it doesn't seem to be there at the moment or am I missing something ? ???

We shut down all other servers on our race nights ns. We've just finished our GTL race so it should be back in the lobby in half an hour or so.

If anyone is struggling with setups for the Caterham, Simbin have provided these for most of the standard tracks which make a good starting point. You'll find these in game under "Car Setup" > File

I have also found that the wheel/force feedback settings are crucial to the enjoyment of this sim. If anyone is having difficulty with these, please pm me with your email address and I'll attatch mine back for you to try.

Are you sure you are on the right track? I did a 1:07.597 (http://www.filefront.com/17269686/Zandvoort Club_100907_0150_Practice1 HOT LAP.Vcr), which seems to be way too much of a gap on such a short track.

Cars understeer like hell and are horrible to drive out of the box, so after some extreme setup tweaking I got them to drive a lot more enjoyable with my setup (http://www.filefront.com/17269684/Caterham.svm).

If I have time I'll have to give this a go. The last time I drove race 07 the force feedback drivers for G27 wheel were problematic. The G25 and Porsche GT3RS wheels where fine.

I looked at my race laps from NASASimRacing and found a 1:06.0 in the cat 260. I think that one has more juice though.

Great idea to have another go with Race 07, I never felt it was too bad, the cars can feel a little bit dead and easy to drive until you push them really hard when they seem fairly good.  I guess it suffered with iRacing incoming a year or two back.

Always had a problem with the FFB though, so I'll be interested to try JR's settings.  2 problems I get - one is the steering oscillating from side to side when driving straight, I just have to grip the wheel hard.  The other is that it doesn't distinguish between grip and sliding wheels at all.  With WTCC cars there is no feeling of the steering lightening when understeer sets in - considering how obvious it is in a powerful fwd car I've never understood this failing of the FFB.  Just feels dead.  I reckon its this dead FFB that makes the cars feel a little lifeless.

I have to recommend the FFB settings Jeff linked to, they are nice.

Done a 1:08.1 so far, I tried a public race in the CSR320 first and that's a beast, the CSR200 is much more forgiving.

Your welcome, it's actually a very easily made setup. The rear is as stiff as it can be, whereas the front is almost as soft as possible :D

And for this. I had to greatly decrease the steering force % value in game for my DFGT but it now feels very good.

That file made a huge difference to me, before it I didn't like Race 07/GTR Evo/On (etc  ::)) but now the cars feel more like GTR2 and rF to me.

Sorry gt can't make this event - will be in Italy.  I've updated Steam etc on my old XP drive and it all looks good.  We had a Caterham Series in another league a few years ago and as your planned Series is UK based I guess I've raced on most of the tracks in one format or another, so I hope to be able to give it ago - particularly when the weather gets colder and there's no outside jobs waiting to be done.

Have a good race, I'll be thinking of y'all - I don't think, too busy enjoying the sights, food and wine.

Jeff thanks for this, but for some reason i can't see the setup file in game (followed above instructions) i seem to be having this same issue with the Radical mod...files are there when opened in windows but in game no sign ..is this anything to do with Windows 7 64bit?

I have W7 64 bit too with no problems. Race 07 filters the setups by car and track. Make sure you are looking in the right trackfolder (especially the year) and the right car (BHP).

Setup should do in:

X:\Users\*name*\Documents\SimBin\RACE 07\UserData\CarSetups\2007_Zandvoort_Club

Re-uploaded to here :

http://www.2shared.com/file/-r9yS1gB/Caterham.html

Look for "Save file to your PC: click here" at the bottom right. Could be that saving it manually doesn't work.

Race 07 has the facility of including AI cars in online races. For this event we have decided to include 5 AI cars to race alongside us so that we can evaluate their contribution. Depending on their behaviour and our feedback from this event, we might invite them along for the forthcoming series.

Details added to race announcement.

Due to some "technical difficulties" it's been a while since I've had the chance to return to Race 07 but managed to get another session in tonight. Thanks for the setup Mr Ruskus. I liked it straight away which is unusual as I often find other folks setups feel wrong to me and I end up fiddling with things and probably ruining them  ::).

Well tonight I got my time down to 1:10.577 which compared exactly with the slowest AI driver. I checked the sector times and I see that I'm losing time only in sector 2 so at least I know where I can improve. Like these cars a lot but there are a couple of kerbs that can spin you around I found.

I like the AI in practise at least. They don't bother me, I don't bother them  ;D

I'm really looking forward to this, and putting AI cars into the mix is a fantastic idea  :thumbup1: :thumbup2:

Just done a quick time trial to make sure the game still works since I haven't played it for months. only did a few laps on a default setup 'load and drive' type thing and was easily into 1.10s within a couple of laps so with some practice and setting up I guess another second or so should be possible.

Have you decided what AI strength settings your going to use yet?

For the test race the AI strength is set to 100%. If Goldtop decides to use them in proper races he could adjust this, up or down, dependant on your feedback.

I remember the AI was competitive at 110%. Race07 AI is much better than GTR2. The AI at 110% for GTR2 is pathetic.

Yes I agree, although they can still be a bit sleepy at the start.

From my testing, the AI seems to vary from track to track. One would expect this with add ons, but this seems to be the case with the standard tracks too. I suggest we see how it goes for this test race and if it's popular, then perhaps we can vary the % for each race in the series so that it is appropriate for each track.

BTW as much as I'd like to, I can't take the credit for coming up with this idea as that belongs to Tony  :thumbup1:

This probably isn't the place to put this (and feel free to move it of course) but I'll ask anyway....

How do you set 'Quick Chat' options in Race07?  There doesn't seem to be anywhere to set it, unlike GTR2 and PnG in Multi-player Options.  I tried editing the .PLR file but doesn't seem to do anything.

Cheers

No problem Steve....

You need to access your plr from in game from Options > Open User Folder

Then go to UserData > [your profile name] > [your plr] open plr with notepad and quick chat settings are near the top.

To change the assigned keys go to Options > Control Settings and scroll down.

Should be able to join you for this.

During the odd Cat race at GBGPL, I was always reminded of Stiggies go in the 500  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tN6_xUL8j4 Not sure how accurate the sim is but Races Cats always bring a smile to my face, just like the Stigs I'd imagine. That realistic enough for me :)

I installed my GTR Evolution, selected the directx & online options... all seemed fine.
It got to a bit where I installed steam.... went well & I've created my account.

Err... now what? ???

There appears to be no new game installed.
I've logged into steam & it lists 735 servers, none are for Race07/GTREvo & none are called UKRace....

The steam version of the game needs to be downloaded from within steam. Then once thats done you can launch the game from steam and then all the online servers for it are under multiplayer like GTR2.
If I remember right, the game actually has to download twice one for the offline version and once for the online...

Hope that helps.

A few of us on the server earlier this evening and all of us within a second or so of each other, so I hope this bodes well for some good close racing.

I had a problem joining during the quali session and I know some others experienced this. One of the settings on the server was the culprit and I've now fixed this. Obviously and as always, the advice is that it's best that all drivers try to get there before quali to avoid them being "invisible" to those already on track, but at least now you will be able to sneak in if you're late.

Please don't forget to leave feedback after the race, particularly with your thoughts on the AI cars.

....hope you manage to make it Legzy.

So far so good. Did a local install of Evo and Race07 off the DV, and it then went off for a couple
of hours downloading Race07 Steam install.
I seem to be missing something pace wise here. Maybe it's like GTR2 where I am just poor at it
I can just sneak under 1:10, best so far is 1:09.6. But others are doing 8's and even 7's if you
live down under (Cornwall) I did a setup which I can drive, but am struggling to get the best
compromise on brake balance,I either lock the fronts or the tail jumps out under braking.
Tried JR's setup briefly, seems good, though a little looser than what I had.
I love the way these cars feel, I have always been a fan of Race07, I think it's the best of the
Simbin bunch.

Unfortunately I'm going to give this a miss, tired, sluggish reactions mean 2 out of 3 laps in an offline practice involve off-roading which isn't an ideal way to have fun.  Which is a shame as Zandvoort in all its incarnations has always been one of my strongest tracks and I was hoping to nick into the 7s and fight for a podium.

Really hope its a success with a good turnout and I shall try to turn up for some of the races at least, I enjoy Race 07 when I have some concentration!

That was frustrating.  Race 1 was good fun while it lasted, then span out taking a wheel off.  Joined race 2 and on the grid had no wheel input  >:(  so had to quit.

Like the sim though.  I couldn't tell who was AI and who wasn't  :)

I joined the grid for race 1 and heard cars all around me revving their engines but I had no power, gears, nothing, so I esc to pits hoping that I could rejoin but the game wouldn't let me  >:(

So watched the race especially the AI, to see how they behaved etc.

Race two and again I'm at the back but this time I don't esc out but stay on track and lo, at the countdown (I think) everything comes back, so it must be a Race 07 thing?

Wish I'd known that for race 1, still that's what test races are for. I find these cars hard work and this track for me is a tough one but it was a very good turn out and great fun. Definitely looking forward to the first real race.

I vote for AI in the race as for me they add to the experience, in fact I had some good tussles with them. And they appeared to behave in a completely acceptable way.

Nice one Tudor :punk:

I yelled twice before race one not to escape ;) .

Car control only gets active after everybody has joined, the AI cars were probably revving :P

I didn't like the AI, they don't understand being lapped and actually started to defend. So in order to thank them I just kept rearending them

That was fun. Plain and simple :)

First race was a tad lonely as Mike slipped up going for it and I couldn't really get near JR. Congrats to him.

As normal, the reverse grid was immense. Took it steady at start and gradually ramped it up. Going through that epic final turn with Ade on the inside and Marco on the outside had me laughing out loud. Shame that Marco got squeezed out, hope that wasn't reason you quit :'( Luckily for me, Mike was doing a great job holding off JR and I caught them up quite quickly. The next 6 or 7 laps were brilliant fun as we all tried moves on each other and going side by side with JR for first three corners was crazy :) Shame API slipped off up front as that could only have been improved with four instead of three.

For me, the reverse races only work if the faster gents are patient and that was the case. Hope it stays that way.

AI worked fine for me but found them a bit of a pain in quali, can they be sent to sleep there? Also, for me, the races felt a tad long. 20-25 minutes would be plenty for me. Maybe only cause dust had settled in both races about 10 mins from end. Good work Tudor and hope to see a similar turnout next time. I'll be there  :)

Good fun racing in the 1st one, tyres seem to go off after 20 mins or so, don't have XD in it. can you do that?
Th AI lost me a place near the end of Race1, NSfast was being very polite with one of them, and I got boxed
out in T1 allowing Caske to slip through. Race 2 I got a wheel inside the kerb giving Mike more room than I
probably needed to, and spun in front of the pack, some avoided, then one hit, bent suspension so game over.

Bit of a mixed bag for me. Turned up as it's nice to encourage new ideas and grabbed Mike's setup from the online files. Very impressive speed Mike is you used it unchanged last night. I really couldn't get to grips with the understeer especially through the long last turn.

After 20 mins of the first race I had no one to race, the tyres felt as if they were well passed their best and I stupidly binned it. Still my sister had been on the phone pleading for help to fix their Internet connection so I missed the 2nd race as I was on the phone.

Not sure I can really do these anyway as I'm already racing regularly on 4 evenings each week & it doesn't give one much time to do other stuff :(

Good fun that was, early in race 1 I had a nasty spin and hit someone as they passed which spun me round in the opposite direction and then hit them again on the other side, not sure if it was a human player or AI, either way my apologies.
When I finally got going again I was a long way back and the car didn't feel quiet right, but my lap times were unaffected I think so managed to catch back up to phspok and nsfast and just followed them round for the the rest of the race until nearly the end where we caught the AI up and got tangled up with them allowing me to sneak past phspok and finish behind nsfast.

Race 2 was much better and a flying start saw me pass phspok and into T1 alone. Soon after that the fast guys caught me up and a slightly wide line allowed a whole train of cars through and I think pshpok must have sneaked past with them because the next time I saw him he was facing the wrong way in front of me.
With phspok seemingly out of the race I managed to hold 5th for the whole of race 2 and was even 4th for a little while, but after API closed up from 7 secs to 2 secs in less than 2 laps I started trying to hard and eventually span out and watched him go past. I wasn't too disappointed as I knew he would have passed me soon anyway.

I think the AI mixed things up really well and would say keep them in, but maybe make them more competitive. and I agree with those that have said to make the races shorter, say 20 Min's per race?

Thanks to Goldtop and Wiltshire Tony, and anyone else involved in organising all this.

Congratulations to the poddies.

Apologies for the continuing delay in posting results/replays...a few technical difficulties.

Really pleased with the turnout last night, thanks to all who made it and for making such an enjoyable event.

A few teething problems, especially with the unfamiliar for some starting procedure  :(. Best to find out now than in the first race of the series though, I'll put up some notes in the event details to remind us.

Regarding AI, I hadn't intended them to pose lapping problems, so maybe the % needs to be upped a little. They do however vary from track to track. For instance, they won't be appearing at Oulton as they have no idea how to negotiate Cascades and end up in a heap at the bottom :D

Regarding race length, I set it to the real world event. I do agree though that 30 mins did seem a little too long with 2 races back to back. 20 minutes seems to be cropping up a lot, so unlesss anyone has any objections, I'll make the series events the laps equivalent of 2x20 mins races which is actually more like a typical Sunday afternoon club event.

@Matt: Yes xd works with Race 07 but it looks very slightly different.

As for my race, I think I need to practice more rather than driving around addon tracks looking for holes  :)

It seems like the quality of data from SimBin exports has gotten even worse than it was in GTR2. >:(
