I like to welcome all to my pre season test race. It`s a double test, first to see if I, with massive support by FMG and others, can make this work and also to see if the track, Watkins Glen 1948(v2.0) is good for online racing.

The Track:

American road racing was revived at Watkins Glen, NY on October 2, 1948, the first road race run since before World War II. The 6.6 mile circuit ran through the village streets, starting and ending in front of the Schuyler County Court House. To close the public roads for the event, it was necessary to have permits from six governmental entities; the state, county, village, Town of Reading, Town of Dix and the New York State Parks Commission.

It was also necessary to have a permit from the New York Central Railroad to stop the trains during the race, as the course crossed the tracks. The circuit was used for races from 1948 through 1952. Unchanged, it may be toured today as public roads. For those who were here in the early days, it is a sentimental journey. For those who have never been here, it is a lesson in motor racing history.

I've raced this long ago in some sort of a league vs. league event, can't remember who was involved in it though and who organized it. There weren't any problems such as freezes as far as I can remember, but the track proved to be mostly about surviving than normal racing.

I was only thinking this morning a 66 warm up would be great, should be able to make it.

Survival sounds good to me  ;)

My boss has put on some beers and a chillie tomorrow night and I've been invited to attend so will have to miss out on this one.  hope it goes well.

I've decided I may actually come along to this one. I like WG48 too much not to, TBH! ;D

Didn't think too much of this track , although it does look very pretty and got to compliment those responsible for the creation ,  in reality its 2 long flat out straight bits connected together by a silly twisty bit which has the manhole covers removed for good effect .

Just my point of view anyway , of coarse others may think differently but I dont see how it can be a good track for a Pro race , possibly because my own efforts at driving it were pathetic, although I did set a new PB for shift R's  .

Is it just me who gets eye stagma watching all those trees wizz past , reminded me a bit of the old playstation game when you had to guide the spaceship thingy down the high speed tunnel .

My race ended prematurely on lap one when I found myself incapable of going up a hill in a straight line. :/

I love this track but whole-heartedly agree with Bernie, this is not suitable for a Pro race unless you want to make it "last man standing". Not to mention, Int Long is 20 laps, around 65 minutes. That's enough torture, ta!

Oh, and this would rock in the 67s.

It sure requires a different approach, but that's the nice thing about. It's the same with any track of this sort such as Nurburgring, Sachsenring, Clermont Ferrand, etc. It just requires more practice and driving below your limit so you have a safety margin. You can't drive it flat out like Monza obviously.

With a good setup and decent amount of practice, it can be quite enjoyable, plus the fact that it punishes hotlappers and those who take too much risk makes it possible to have an unexpected result, allowing drivers who are normally out of contention for the victory to take advantage of the mistakes of those in front.

So stop moaning and start practicing.  :P

P.S. I have problems with my Internet, but when those are fixed I'll upload my pole lap on Youtube. I think it could be helpful to those who want to see braking points, lines and so on.

P.P.S. Jethro, you could've shift-red if you crashed. I did it a couple of times, lol. Got to work on consistency for the real race during the season.

Hristo: game crashed cos it couldn't handle my crashing, hence why you didn't see me beyond lap 1.

The crazy thing about this track,  my one and only "clean" lap was slower than the other banzai laps when I bounced off the scenery , went grass cutting , orienteering etc. and made prolific use of the S/R function .

How you guys were doing those 3m 30's times is totally beyond me , just cant see where the 20 odd seconds comes from that I would need to stay even remotely competative  :-[

Bernie I know how you feel. I had the 'pleasure' of being lapped by H two laps from the end. One second he was in my mirror, I tried to keep with him, and wasn't too far behind over the rail tracks, but boy, when he hit that gravel section he was GONE. Maybe he grew up on 'dirt tracks' lol.

If the surface of Mars can be likened to a dirt track then yes,  I agree  ;) ;) ;)

Not to worry Bernie, Hristo has an unfair advantage - he lives in another time zone, so his car is always ahead of us! :(

Using large doses of blood sweat and tears (mostly tears) I have sort of got the hang of this track , the secret for me was in the set up  ::)

After struggling for ages to navigate the previously inpassible bomb crater section , I honed the suspension and tweeked the bump stops so that I could finally come out the other side with all 4 wheels still attached to the chassis.

An encouraging PB of 3:35.58 no WR but a whopping improvement for this old timer    :wacko:

 

Grats Bernie.  Our PB's are within a few hundredths of each other :).  Should mean we will have some decent battles this season  :fencing:
