Title: UKGPL Season 20 (2010-2011) Spec Challenge - Imola - Oct 17
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on October 11, 2010, 10:34:54 PM +0100
The doors of the Spec Racing Asylum are now open to the misguided lunatics.

For anyone who is new to the format the event consists of two back to back Intermediate Short races on the same track. Each driver has to drive one car in each race - start whichever you like. Anyone mad enough to drive the same car will be disqualified from race two. This weeks choice of chariot is the Lotus 33 v Braham BT11.

Spec Races is the only championship with no handicapping - its down to individual driver skill & the ability to cope with different cars.

Last year we had enough entrants for 2 championships - the Light Brigade & the Heavy Brigade. As it worked out most race nights were run on one grid & its just one championship table this season.

The Spec Series will be run according to normal UKGPL rules, although only reported incidents will be moderated. (Please file reports by the Friday after race night). Unlimited resets (Shift R) are allowed and you must take a Stop & Go penalty unless another driver or warp was clearly responsible for your misfortune. Stop & Go means coming to a complete halt in (or around) your pit box - please be careful on the rejoin not to impede other cars.  The intention is to be a little less serious than the dedicated mod championships - have as much fun as you can within the rules.

We'll kick things off at Imola. For years the San Marino Grand Prix was crafty plan by the Itailians to get two races. Good thing to because it is a great circuit that has some of the coolest named corners ever; Tamborello, Paratella, Aqua Minerali.

Its Sunday Evening - naff all on the TV, the wife / girlfriend / mum  wants to talk about Christmas shopping - C U ON TRACK.

I'm in for sure, last time at Imola I had some good scraps with Norm and Phil Thornton. Now you're not chief mod Phil I won't be so easy on you ;)

This is a great track for racing so it's sure to be good fun.

Are we running 2 separate grids or we don't have enough drivers?

I believe there are still only 18 signed up this season for spec (so far), so I understand it to be 1 grid.

Another disastrous outing. The first race was.....interesting, and was certainly not short of action. I had several offs and mistakes to on-route to 8th. The 2nd race, the same story really. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm warping on track without me knowing because several drivers seemed to drive into my path without realising I was there. This isn't an internet issue for a change, it's my laptop with the flickering "S" bar so I'm thinking I am being a hazard to others once my laptop slows.

Anyway, going to check the replay to see if my theory is true. If it is, then I'm going to have to stick with the stock 67s. Hope the rest of you had a great race  :).

??? I had just wished Bernie good luck with his connection for these races and........................ :cursing:

I get one of those f***#'!!** malware attacks that tells you "You are under attack from a virus"  " everything is infected" and nothing will work!! But really it is just a scam to get you to pay up for the "solution"!!!

Somehow it got past my anti-malware software and all my protective stuff.

It took me about 90mins to track down the offending file and neutralise it....(you guys could have waited for me  ::))

If anyone knows where I can send a hitman to kneecap the b!**@~! that put this crap out there.........................

Connection difficulties on Race 1 were due to the idiot moderator (me) getting slightly confused with the server settings. Apologies for that - & thanks to FMG I now know how to do it properly.
Will post results & replays later.
Appreciate warp would have made driving conditions more difficult & would suggest a general amnesty on incidents for Race 1. If, however, you feel you were impeded by someone elses driving please report in the usual fashion.

Race 1 wasn't really fun because of the odd warp and bouncing cars. I had a bad start as it turned out my 1st gear was too long, so Tim took the lead and Natan jumped up to 2nd, while I dropped to 3rd with Dean right behind.

I closed up on Natan at Tosa and once he went too wide on the exit of Peralta, I attacked on the inside down the hill and that set me up for the outside towards Aqua Minerale. Once there, I opted to outbrake Natan, but he didn't leave me much room despite the warp issue, and then he went a bit too fast into the corner, sliding wide and off, giving me a nudge in the process. Or maybe it was the nudge that spun him off, I don't know.

Luckily it didn't disturb my position too much and so I continued in 3rd behind Dean. It was very difficult to attack with the lag we had, so it took some laps until I got a good chance and make it stick.

By that time Tim was some 2-3 seconds up the road, but he must've made a mistake somewhere because the gap halved in just more than a lap. I wasn't sure how I was going to pass him, but he had a moment in the braking of Tosa and didn't try to fight me anymore, so I was through with ease.

Race 2 was much better in terms of connection stability, so we could have a close race. This time I had a better start, but Tim still rocketed into the lead and we had a really good fight for a couple of laps. Although I passed him soon after the start, I couldn't shake him off my back and he kept going strong in my slipstream.

It was only in the last couple of laps that I managed to open up a gap and push for some fast laps. Sadly what looked to be a very good lap with 2 to go was spoiled as I touched the grass on the outside of Rivazza, but managed to catch the car before it was too late. This brought Tim closer, but it wasn't enough and I finished in front of him by 1.8 seconds.

Bill, can you tell us exactly what you set incorrectly?  A few people (e.g. me and Bernie) seem to be having connection problems recently which appear to be associated with lag so it would be nice to know what server settings are significant.  If we should be doing something other than following the advice in the guidelines (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/moderating/igor) then we need to know (and the guidelines should be amended).  As you know I'm not starting the official race servers any more but I'm happy to run my server for praccy sessions and I'd like to use the optimal settings.  My server isn't perfect (I wouldn't trust it for league races) but I would still like it to be the best it can be.

Phil - Correct settings for UKGPL7 are Ser Freq = 3 Serv Amt = 132 Client Freq = 3 Clt Amount = 84. I had Client Amount in at 132.
Been having some server connections problems myself of late but Race 2 was the best I've had in a long while.

You also had frequency set to 8 on both settings :)

Once on 3 - 84 / 3 - 132 it was running like a dream :)

Thanks Bill & Tim.  That explains it.  It also highlights how important the BW settings are :).
