A couple of notes re. Blue Flags during qualifying and race where they differ from GTR2;

Blue Flags during qualifying - if you see a blue flag during qualifying it will be on your outlap and the driver approaching is on a hotlap. Please take this into account and act accordingly. The driver behind does not know you are on an outlap so no rash moves out of the way please  Usual SRouk rules / guidelines should be applied.

Blue Flags during the race -  if you see a blue flag during the race it means the driver approaching is about to lap you. Please take this into account and act accordingly. It differs from GTR2 in that you will not be penalised for not allowing the lapping driver to pass within a certain period. The flag is informational only. Usual SRouk rules / guidelines should be applied.

Awesome.

Really looking forward to the Mazda race, think that should be a lot of fun.  The jury is still out on whether I'll pick up the F1 or not ....

Thanks guys, much appreciated! Apologies for ignoring the poll results entirely, I basically just couldn't wait to drive the Williams with a few of you and it looks like I'm not the only one so I just had to chuck it in as a bonus race!

Off to see Frankie Boyle tonight but I'm kinda hoping he keeps it short and sweet, looks like the iR site's down for "maintenance" so I've got cars to drive goddammit!  ;D

Please note the slightly earlier start time for race 1 btw, don't miss out!

They weren't out all that long .... I'm not racing it this season as I'm a bit rusty through lack of driving, but I'll pick it up ... and I'll be hitting the track (and inevitably grass, gravel, tryes, walls ... and maybe the odd driver) for both races on Friday :).

Good man Adam - I knew if I didn't put any pressure on and left you to ponder you'd soon see sense haha! Seriously though, unless this is a complete lemon it will be a regular on Fridays so you'll have plenty of opportunity to drive it in a more relaxed environment shall we say!

Hope you can make it Ken - the F1 bit's a little later than our usual event so with any luck that might help...

I'll be trying the Roadster.  I will hopefully make it in for the Mazda race, as I'm working late, but I'll definately be in for the F1's

Just had a Mazda race at Mid-Ohio - lost it under braking on lap 1, then worked my back through to 4th.  Epic racing to be had in the MX5 for sure :).

The F1 is just going to be bonkers .... :D

Bring it on :D

I'm not sure i shout be saying this but, I was enjoying the mazda. The cup is quite different to the roadster on defaults and coulds get the front of the cup to turn without locking up. The roadster is quite nice to drive. Shame Silverstone Nat doesnt have many corners as it gets a bit boring down the straights.

I had a race at Mid Ohio last night in the Roadster too - absolutely mint, but I'm sure the size of the grids last night were also helping to make things fun.  SR's going to take a beating with these thought as they just demand a few taps here and there.

Cheers, Ross.

I tried all these out after the Race07 event, surprised the MX-5 isn't more oversteery. After half a dozen laps in each I did a 1:09.6 in the Cup and 1:10.2 in the Roadster. The F1 is much more bonkers, I might have done 10 laps with a best in the low 28's. Looking forward to a Friday in front of the PC again after missing the last dew due to being away/busy/not enough grid slots over the last few weeks.

BTW there is a fixed setup available for the F1 @ Silverstone, are we using this or are setups open?

Title: Re: anythingcanhappenfridays - Halloween Special - Oct 29
Post by: mr_oily on October 28, 2010, 09:23:26 AM +0100
Sorry chaps - haven't had chance to edit the poster or turn more than a few laps to be fair but just a quick one to answer those questions....

Mazda choice will be the Roadster this time out but yeah i think that's a good idea to fix the setups on the F1 car for it's debut Pete.

I was enjoying the mazda.

Hahaha that's good enough for me Mark - I never thought i'd see the day but I'm glad you're getting some fun out of your investment finally!

I understand Silverstone's not the most interesting of layouts to hot lap but I've chosen it purely because it can throw up some great side by side racing. It might be turn out to be utterly poo.....I'm hoping not!

Just tried the Cup last night and came 2nd in my 1st race would of won it lol, and same with f1 at zandvoort won that race in my 1st go!

Thing i have to ask whats difference between cup and the Roadster, I know one's left hand drive and other right hand...

What class are these cars, if rookie?, what happens to solstice and srf?

Any reason why we are restricting the MX5 field to just the Roadster?

Go on, be brave, allow us the choice. ;)

Roadster is 5 speed, Cup is 6 speed, roadster allows some setup changes, Cup is fixed.  That's essentially it.

Otherway round, roadster is fixed, cup allows setup changes.

Seems like there's a lot of praise from Miata owners attesting to the realism of the iRacing car which is great to see.

I just grabbed a bit of this post which highlights the differences between the Cup and the Roadster;

Quote
The 6spd Cup car is frighteningly similar to the MX-5 MS-R I autocrossed this year. It wants to push mid-corner off no matter what. In the real car we tried to loosen it up to get rid of that push but couldn't do it, and instead just made the car snap loose on entry. The iRacing MX-5 Cup car is the same for me so far. It has more advanced setup options. I played around with them for a while on the server and got the car loose enough on entry to start losing me time, and it still pushed middle to exit. This tells me iRacing's car/suspension modeling system is very good.

I tried the 5spd RHD Roadster afterwards. This it the car they race in Japan I guess. Right away I noticed the improved handling. It must have stiffer rear springs because this car was much better balanced, for me. Setup options are very limited, just camber/toe/pressure IIRC. Maybe caster. Around Brands Indy, the 5spd gearing actually worked better through the first half of the course, but fell flat on its face in the final corner, which is pretty important, so the times were similar. I was about a tenth faster in the 5spd and never quite got the last corner right (huge challenge in the 5spd) so I think it may be the quicker car here, at least for me. The 6spd will be great for folks to like to drive managing understeer.

It may come down to a gearing choice at most tracks. Shall be interesting to see.

Hahaha I'd love to give in Darren but I figure the fun factor is likely to depend on how close we run so I want the chariots to be as similar as possible really. I know there's not much in it but if you don't mind I'm going to be a git and stick to just the Roadster tonight, we'll clearly be running these loads on Fridays so plenty of time to chuck them both in together. You'll have to become a regular won't ya ;).

BTW if anyone feels like sticking up a practice server tonight please feel free  ;D

Anyway yep that sounds reasonable enough so I'll change it this once :-*. Both cars it is!

Post by: Adam Parle on October 28, 2010, 03:26:22 PM +0100
You don't need to worry about doing that for Pops - he's already disadvantaged enough when sitting on the grid :D.

Ta for opening the car choice up - I for one will most likely use the 6-speed, as that's what I drove in a race last night, and I'll not get a chance to practice before tomorrow most likely.

I'm sure it'll be fine, I can't imagine that there's much between them, and if anything, it'll make the racing more interesting as the cars would presumably be quicker in different areas of the track.

 Ok that's fine, so ten places less than last is....

Yeah no worries Adam, that's a good point about the cars being quicker in different areas - would be quite a result if that's the case...time to do some testing!

Really looking forward to this one - I tell you what though, I am not at all impressed with what these updates have done to my frame rate! It was comfortable almost on max everywhere previously but even reducing the settings down to class 5 I was running at less than 50  fps yesterday at Mid-Ohio (Mazda)  :'(.

Haven't had the chance to do more than a handful of laps around Brands Indy in the MX-5 (not sure which one it was, I think it was 6-speed so whichever that is). Will need to buy the Williams before tonight then I guess, so that'll be a baptism of fire. I'm hoping my experience in F1 2010 and that I drive mainly the IndyCar anyway will put me in good stead.

As I haven't had much time with the new build or the Mazda, can someone recommend which one to take, the Cup or the Roadster. I want the one that handles better (unless they're both the same).

 Thanks Adam, you took the words right out of my...fingers. Not that I want to promote a culture of not practicing but I don't you have to be quite so concerned with that for these events Paul....but you know you'll be quick in any case!

BTW the Miata racing series drivers on the server last night were saying the baseline setup for the Cup is spot on, although we were at Road Atlanta so not sure how that'll compare.

Given the site maintenance scheduled for today, does it affect plans for the race at all?

I am loving these two cars!

I really hope not! If it does I'll just be re-arranging for when the service resumes, i don't have any other plans tonight so late night racing sounds fine by me :)

Got to agree, am loving both cars but I could not take the grin off crashing down through the gears in the Williams for Club, just love that feeling  - I even ran close to somebody for a bit! :)

Unfortunately my daughter has 4 friends over tonight

You want to try "lets play race engineer" Gary - fun for all the family! There's fetching beers, calculating strategy, fanning the overheating driver and much much more  ;D

Yep, which means Oily will have to move the start time one hour later (and shorten practice by an hour to keep it on the same schedule). Also means there will be no practice or buying/downloading of cars (for those of us that haven't yet) before hand! :o

Groan!
Just sat down for some fun and no iRacing  :'(

Had a spin in Mazda and Williams earlier!
Awesome!
The Williams is a little less 'exciting' ! / easier to drive than the Indy car :(
but good solid fun.
May be the whingin, moanin iRacing deserters might have liked the F1 car but hey their loss! :)

Hoping to be out to play tonight :)
Looking forward to the F1 most of all :)

The Mazda's the real gem in this build I think.  The FW is mint in a kind of mad extreme way, but I don't think the racing will actually be that much fun for the masses.  But I can see the Mazda races always being fun provided there's a decent field size.

Cheers, Ross.

Hello all, I'm going to try and make the race this week, providing iRacing get the site back up in time, the MX5 is mint not the fastest of cars but good fun. The Williams is a monster, I can't get to grips with the amount of grip it has and always brake/turn in far too early .

What sort of times are we looking for @ Silverstone National in the MX5 Cup ?.

Cheers.

It is back up now.

As for times, Don's vid show a 1.09.2. My best after 20 laps or so was a 1.09.4, but I'm really struggling with the gearbox and braking here (I've decided to drive with right foot braking only from now on, which is a challenge, especially with manual clutch, but much closer to real driving and so more interesting to me).

Hello fellow earthlings, I'll try not to hit anybody tonight :D

Might not make the Mazda but I'll be hunky for the GP1 car hehe.

Not got a clue who I is? clicky here (http://members.iracing.com/membersite/member/CareerStats.do?custid=23470), and yes, just slightly nuts, but I'm just as nice.

Sorry all, I need more time to work out this gearbox, especially on this car and also at this track, with its tightening corners. Apologies to anyone who hit me after the 2nd spin at brooklands. I'd like to do the F1 race as this is not a problem with the gears, but I don't think I have time  :(

Loved the opening laps, looked really great from the back 8)

Really love this car, shame it's one of the worst tracks in iR :(

Reckon this car would be great in a sprint series (~30mins) at tracks like Brands/Barber... wonder if I'll be round long enough to enjoy it ::)

Super, super fun.

Great racing with Don, Ross & Jay until a little <ahem> over-enthusiasm broke the party up.

Tried to hunt down Sharky at the end but I think I was a bit too nice :D

That was epic!

Was well happy with a PB in qually - would have nice to dip into the 1:08s but I was chuffed with the time I set.

The start was pretty clean from what I saw - the spotter was invaluable for me!  Had a good few laps catching/passing/defending with Paul, although I was mindful of Dave catching us up.  After Dave's disco Paul dropped back a bit, and I set about reeling Purds in.

The gap was slowly coming down, but with a "5 laps left" message, I pitted earlier than him, had a solid stop - and when I came out I was all alone really ... apart from Ross keeping me company for the last however many laps.

Bah was having a good time trying to catch Adam and Paul R when my graphics froze. >:(

Unlucky Dave - would have been fun :(

30-40 min sprint would be ace in these I think.

You definately were Pops. I was making my own amusement in the last 10 laps as I was so bored. If you'd gone up the inside I would not have stopped you.

The first 5 laps were awesome. Never seen so many 3 abreasts and close racing, but that soon dissappeared and was left with 20-25 laps of driving a really slow car at a really fast track, not a great combo I'm afraid.

I have to say I actually didn't mind the car, although I think Pops screwed me over telling me to take the Roadster as it seemed a totally unchuckable ;D, very hard to get sideways and slower in general to everyone else :(, but that may have been my driving. LOL. Well I'm sure most of it was really, but have to get my excuses in! ;) Do that car on a club circuit and I think it would be quite good fun though, so I'm willing to try it again.

The F1 race afterwards. OMG! ROCKIN! Having not tried the car before joining the server, didn't quite know what to expect, but absolutely loved the car, definatley my sort of thing. Don't like all the setup options, far too many for this to be a hobby for goodness sake, gonna have to rely on other people I think. But the first sector at Silverstone is just incredible. A slight lift for T1, a slight lift for T2 and massive change in direction for T3 and T4 going down a couple of gears, just incredible.

We obviously all need a fair bit of practice in the Williams, but I'm up for it. :)

When I got in form work, the Mazda race was full  :D

So I went over to warm up for the F1.  Qualified 5th and got a good start.  Very good first lap from everyone and I had a chance to stay with Iain, until I outbraked myself and ran off on lap 2 dropping behind Shark and Purds.  Over the next few laps, both of them had spins, and I was chasing Paul.  Who also had a spin, so I was back in 4th.  After that it seemed to be who wants to spin the most, passed Adam when he was playing in the grass and then Iain spun nearly into the pitlane!  Now 2nd!  Got held up badly by a backmarker and lost the place to Adam, who went off at Becketts a couple of laps later, then I was in a nice little gap, and noticed the gap to the leader was coming down.  I wouldn't have caught him normally, but I kept pressing on and passed him for the lead when he spun at the end of lap 17, so only 1 lap to do and a win!

Woohoo!  ;D

We all need practice with this car, you can't relax for a moment with it or it'll have you off.  Awesome!

Wow!  The MX5 is a seriously fun car to race..  Had a great battle early on with Adam M and Ian (great racing guys, clean and fair) until a "Network Device Error" chucked me out of the race. :(

This has happened only a couple of times since joining iRacing and I'm completely stumped as to what the problem could be...  Is it my internet connection, my router, my network card?  ???

Anyway, once iRacing finally let be rejoin and I served my tow I set about working my way back up the field from 15th...  I reached 10th and with a few laps to go I could see Pops and Sharky battling ahead.  I pushed really hard to catch them, but I just ran out of laps...

Great fun!!!  ;D

A big thank you goes to Oily for arranging this...  If you are planning on anymore MX5 races give me a shout and I'll be there....

Congrats to Adam M, Ian and Adam P for finishing on the podium...

Disappointing evening for me, couldn't get on the MX-5 race as it went full while I was joining :( What is really frustrating is people who joined and then never raced, iRacing doesn't free up the slot so that grid spot gets wasted while others are sat out unable to join.

Then in the F1 race got taken out on L1 by someone driving across the track rejoining after a spin :( I know the cars close gaps very rapidly but there is always the Relative Positions Pit Box thing to tell you someone is coming and it would be polite to wait  ::)

The Williams is properly mental though but I'm not sure how good it is for racing, pretty true to real life. If the car in front doesn't make a mistake it's pretty much follow my leader.

Thanks guys - that was one of the most enjoyable night's racing I've had in a long time, those opening laps in the Mazda were most amusing, wouldn't it be great if we could secure that kind of turnout week in week out!?

Anyway report tomorrow and don't worry, we'll be running something a little more challenging for the Mazdas next week ;)

Looks like the import script needs updating following the new build so the results will have to wait a little - Dave if you'd be so kind when you get a moment  ;D.

Sorry, that was me guilty on both counts!

Firstly I joined the Mazda server with every intention of racing but domestic complications got in the way.

Then I was just back from those complications in time for one flying lap in the Williams before the race. I was on the back of the grid and followed the pack for the first half lap. When the cars just ahead of me tripped each other up I got a run on Ross and we were side by side through Abbey. A warp contact had me spinning. No excuses really, I should have checked my Relative box but I thought I was the last car on track. I didn't realise but some must have started from pit lane??

I think it was only me, I had tried a few practice starts and either bogged down badly of spun out. I thought I would be a danger to others so took what I hoped was the safe route  :D I'll remember to join the server a bit earlier next week to bagsy a spot.

Really really good night of racing.... Was pondering whether or not to bother with the Mazda... another slow car you have to eeek every bit of speed out but that was unfair in hindsight  :-X

Somehow got 3rd in quali and had a solid two thirds of the race.... but I remembered I had replaced the keybind for Select with the Pit Limiter for the Williams F1 the nite before  :wetfish: ...so couldn't avoid taking the default fuel setting and a fresh set of tyres.... plus I also got sideways across the grass at Brooklands and got a black flag to slow down on my in-lap......... so all-in-all losing me around 10-14 secs! :-[! Adam P was 5 secs behind and was 12 secs in front after... I had a good battle with Paul R before spinning and settled for 6th!  :)

F1...was just mental.... had to quit half way through, though, due to gf issues but thats enough story  :P

Great combo Oily  :-*

I don't think you were to blame here Ken - I can't remember exactly what happened but I do remember at the time thinking woops - I've just knocked Ken off the track!  Sorry about that - I hope you managed to recover okay.

Had a lot of fun although I'll be happy if I never do another lap of Silverstone National again.  The combination of Mazda and Williams races was excellent - I'd like to see a mixed grid with both ;)

Simon - sorry for catching you out when you were lapping me in the Williams race - I braked to let you by in a dumb place and I suspect you didn't hear my warning over TS.

No worries Ross, I might have recovered OK if I hadn't rejoined and taken out Pete, that's what I was apologising for. I'm not sure if I had any damage from the contact with you, but I certainly did after turning in to Pete!!
