Title: UKGPL Season 20 (2010-2011) Graduates Cup (67) - Mexico City - Nov 21
Post by: vosblod on November 18, 2010, 04:28:47 PM +0000
Arriba! Arriba! it's on to Mexico for our next outing. In the Works Tom is leading Hristo while, over in the Privateers, Ronnie hovers above the old Clubmans Meister Bernie.

Subject to a viable number of entrants we are running two separate grids for Works and Privateers drivers this season. The Works will run on PRO Damage and Privateers will run on Intermediate Damage with the allowance of ONE shift-R reset. No Shift-Rs are allowed in practice unless authorized by the moderator. A Shift-R (fault or not) MUST be followed by a Stop & Go. A Shift-R for tyres/fuel is not allowed. Any driver taking more then ONE Shift-R OR failing to take a Stop & Go will be disqualified from the race result.

Race List = IGOR
Server(s);
Works = UKGPL_5
IP address = ping myjamesonline.net
Privateers = UKGPL_T7_2
IP address = 62.149.202.168

Time = 21:00 UK time
Track = Mexico City

Damage Model = Works; PRO / Privateers; INT
Qualifying time = 35 minutes. Don't start until 30 mins left on clock to allow everyone to join.
Race length = 50 minutes (laps 28)
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Please note in the event the IGOR racelist remains MIA instructions to join direct will be given out in the #UKGPL chatroom

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=277;theme=6)
The track can be downloaded from : original papy track
Add-on’s available at : http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=5009 (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=5009)

Please be in IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:50 pm UK Time

Reserve drivers should not join the server(s) until there are only 30 minutes of qualifying left. Please restrict chat to pit messages. Moderating will be by reported incidents only, however the moderators reserve the right to review any incident with a particular emphasis on lap one. The aim is to review the race the following weekend so incident reports should be submitted within five days of the race (ie the following Friday). We're hopeful most incidents can be resolved amicably and recommend a days deep breath with a replay review before posting. A sorry in the forum won't be taken as an automatic admission of guilt by the moderators.

With the token system chassis strategy will be a factor. A driver must have sufficient tokens for the chassis he drives in the race.  Any driver who does not have sufficient tokens will be disqualified from the result and his tokens will be set to zero.

Chassis costs;
Lotus 20 / Eagle 17 / Ferrari 15 / Brabham 10 / Cooper 5 / Honda 3 / BRM 0

To see your current tokens hover your mouse over your total points on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=277;theme=6). Ten tokens will be added when you cross the start line.

The Championship is split into two sub-divisions, namely Works and Privateers. The driver split will be;

This track is HARD! How in God's name does somebody do it in 1:50 in a 65. Sheesh. I'll be lucky to get 20 laps in if the Shift-R's don't get me... :(

I've used up all of my tokens now so I'll be condemned to the BRM for the next two events while I save up enough to take the Ferrari again.

Before I joined this league I had never really driven the '67's in anger in years apart from fun race or two. When in a pickup race at Mosport while training for the UKGPL event I took the BRM for the first time in ages. It was then when it first dawned on me how horrible this car was! I was a second away from Al's times and giving it my all, but the gal didn't want to coöperate very well at all. Now I find out it's even worse at Mexico! All power comes at once, it doesn't drift, it doesn't brake, it doesn't go fast in a straight line, all it does is make a lot of noise and overheat the rear tires... I think I'll be at the other end of the grid here...

To make me feel more at home I made a red BRM P115. You can have it too, if you like. Backup your old brm4.3do first, though :) .

lol  welcome to the world of the Waza....almost.

Painting the BRM red might just confuse people enough that they move over to let that "ferrari" get past  ::)

The BRM requires a different approach with the setup to make it work. It has more weight on the rear and more weight overall. That and the engine characteristics demand different suspension and differential settings. It can be quite a nice car to drive once you figure it out.  ;D

Now I must defend the BRM having driven it pretty much all the time here at UKGPL  ;D. I found no problem in sliding the car around the track  ???. Having said that I've had to rely on mainly hotlapper's setups due to my own useless setup skills. That does mean the tyres overheat into goodness knows what range. Maybe that's why I slide so much  ;D.

I've never managed to cure the overheating problem, though it depends on the track. The car is just too heavy for these tires!

Tom, a tip for better handling: try 85/60/5 differential setting (don't ask why, but it works great).

Hmm I'll try that, thanks. Not been my week so far, and I missed out on the GPLRacer GT Fun Race just now due to bad luck with joining problems. Feeling frustrated and feel like taking it out on the BRM and drive it round for that elusive 1:50.xx ...

Just been out to buy a new graphics card, not sure it was a wise move Sapphire Radion 5670HD with no fan but the mother of all heatsinks...time will tell. The fan keeps stopping on my 9800GT, only just had the blighter repaired

Errm...what's the score with IGOR, my status shows as disconnected with no race list, though there are about 20 people on chat.  I know there were problems earlier in the week.  Is it just me with probs now?

Cheers,

Bob.

Hardware probs from our Igor host, Bob, is what I read from those who know.  Probably all the new GTs thrashing around.  They're heavier than single seaters, you know.  Perhaps we should've  been driving them around more carefully?

Just been on the chat and was forwarded to:

Not much more info mind!

Quite like the GTs too, good to have a burn before people start getting too serious with setups and disappearing off into the distance (perhaps just my inability to set a car up)!

Who's leading the prayers to the IGOR gods?

Its not hard.
Start up the correct Mod of GPL directly (or via GEM).
Select the correct car via Team Info, if you need to, within GPL itself.
Select the Multiplayer option from the main screen (middle bottom) and when you click on the Green button you will open the Multiplayer options screen.
You will see options to Join or Host. Select the Join checkbox (top left) and type in the provided IP address into the IP Adress box below the Connect Via dropdown. This is all just below the Join checkbox. (If there is an address in the box already, just delete it using backspace.)
Click on Green and it will try to negotiate a connection.
That should be OK.

The most likely problem might be bandwidth mismatch. You may have to edit your core.ini file but if you get to that point you will need further advice from the host. I believe the normal settings are 3/84, 3/84

The settings for this are in the [Communication]
Mine are:
net_mdm_client_send_every = 3                ; Client packet freq on dialup
net_mdm_client_send_size = 84                ; Client packet size on dialup
net_mdm_server_send_every = 3                 ; Server packet freq on dialup
net_mdm_server_send_size = 384               ; Server packet size on dialup
net_server_port=0                             ; Server port number (0 = default)
net_use_mdm_bandwidth_for_tcp_ip=1            ; Use modem bandwidthfor TCP/IP - 1 = Use net_mdm_ settings *

I've had no major issues. There are other settings but these are the critical ones, I believe.

Hope that helps and isn't too confusing.

To join direct , fire up GEM , click on the green GPL button as if your doing an "off line" race or practise .
Next choose Multiplayer (instead of single race / training )

Type in the I.P. Address exactly in the box at l.h.s. top

All the GEM and bandwidth settings BadBlood talks about are the same issues whether you join direct or via IGOR or VROC.

To join direct you don't have to fire up GEM.  just start GPL on it's own and follow this bit of Badblood's explanation

Quote
Select the Multiplayer option from the main screen (middle bottom) and when you click on the Green button you will open the Multiplayer options screen.
You will see options to Join or Host. Select the Join checkbox (top left) and type in the provided IP address into the IP Adress box below the Connect Via dropdown. This is all just below the Join checkbox. (If there is an address in the box already, just delete it using backspace.)
Click on Green and it will try to negotiate a connection.
That should be OK.

So you just have to type in the IP address directly in GPL.  Incidentally URLs work too.  So if you want to connect to Mike's server UKGPL.5 all you have to do is type in www.jamesonline.net and it will find the server.

Mike must have started GPL on his server of course - that is the main benefit of IGOR you get a list of the servers running races.  To run the league we don't actually need IGOR provided the server is started exactly on time i.e. 9:00pm UK time in most cases.  All the drivers need to do is wait until 9:00pm and type the IP and password into GPL.

Qualified alright and managed to get to the 1st corner first, then at the 2nd to last corner of the 1st lap, my wheel re-calibrated itself and and I had to turn right to keep it straight (hadn't hit anything up until this point).  This took me off across the grass.  Then waited for everyone to go past (after briefly rejoioning in the way, sorry!) and carried on.  The re-cal sorted itself out after several bumps on the barriers. Managed to get past some of the BRMs (nice when you have a lotus), but was then gutted to spin, then spin again and rip a wheel off.  What a waste of tokens!!!  Reckon I had decent pace and thought I'd be able to drive calmly enough, mustn't have waited long enough to cool the tyres and didn't have prib.  Oh well, on to the next race and a circuit I have never even seen!

Three Races and three DNF's; all of them crashes  :-[. Arrived once again in a hurry and qualified poorly, about 2 seconds down on my Clubmans time about four seasons back! Made a great start though, passing about four cars on the first lap and proceeded to have a nice little battle with Tim with me following pursuit, but unable to make a move. That lasted for a short while but then Tim decided to give me the place which was awfully kind of him. I then reward that generosity by spinning off a lap later, doing several barrel rolls, but still had four wheels on the car so I kept on driving.

Soon after I spun off again lazily into the gravel, which allowed Steve through. A few laps later I was up his gearbox looking for a way past. Steve got a little sideways out of the hairpin, and I went for the gap after the left-right kink. Sadly Steve clipped the kerb which spun him round right into my path. We touch, and I destroyed my engine in the process but luckily Steve was able to continue. Apologies for hitting you Steve, but there really wasn't anywhere I could go after I committed myself.

I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and give up driving the BRM this season. Truth be told I just don't have the pace to keep up with the front-runners and I'm compensating with over-driving throughout the races. For now, I'm going to focus on the Brabham for the rest of the season, keeping in tune with Black Night  :). At least, with any luck, the car will help me tame my erratic driving of late.

S'alright for you Sam. 4 races 4 DNFs for me, and after several brushes with the barrier and a couple laps in the 1:49s, was looking good for 5th in this one when John retired, but the Honda bit going into the hairpin and decided enough was enough. Left-rear wheel ripped off and the car embedded in the barrier on the outside.

Still not finished a race this season. Roll on Combe in the 65s. :/

No problem Sam, I was trying to hold a tight line and allow you around the outside at the next turn, but clipped the inside kerb and spun.  Sorry it ended your race.  If I could have got out and given you the car I would have.  Another naff race for me.

Not sure I can be bothered learning a new track just to trundle around un-competitively at the back again so may take a break for the next one.

I've never heard of the next track (what does VIR stand for?), so I think most of us (or all) are going there on equal terms. A download link would be nice, I hope it's not a long track (and I guess Tim hopes for the opposite).

I had a calm but rewarding race tonight and it felt good, because of many problems lately in various races, not just in UKGPL. I tried some setup tweaks during Qualifying and came up with a good balanced solution, though there wasn't time to test it in race trim for more than a lap before the session was over.

It gave me some clues though and I made some tweaks which hopefully were going to work and they actually did. I changed to 2nd gear too early on the start and lost out on acceleration towards T1, so Bob took the lead, but he went off near the end of the lap. From there on I pulled away from Al while looking after the car, especially the tires as I didn't want to cook them too early and struggle with bad handling.

Smoothness was the key it seemed and I tried to do as few corrections as possible, but T1 was always a problem under braking; I think my braking balance and shock settings need a revision. I went into a very good rhythm after a couple of laps and there's nothing more to add really. The race felt a bit longer having to race myself all the way to the end, but a few backmarkers and 2-3 touches of the wall were the wake up call I needed near the end.

Now onto VIR, whatever that is. OH... is it perhaps Virgin International Raceway? I don't know why this just popped up in my mind, lol.

Hi all,

I actually managed to survive that one quite unscaved :) . I brushed the wall a tiny bit on one occasion but didn't have any spins or offs so a steady race for me. Because I was in the busy midfield at the start I decided to take it easy, although it was unfortunate Hiro was slightly slower off the line, which caused Tim and Blood to overtake me into T1. I was feeling quite vulnerable on the outside there but thankfully no one messed up and ran into me :) . I let the race settle down after a couple of laps. Bob was behind me after his mishap but the Lotus was heaps faster so there wasn't any point trying to defend my position. I decided to put my foot down a bit more after that though, and it allowed me to pass Hiro, and later on I passed Tim and Blood as well due to big or tiny mistakes. I then carried on trying to keep Jethro in range, in case of a spin or something from him. I managed to stay within 10 seconds but that was about it, when he lost two wheels two laps before the end. Bad luck Jethro!! More luck next time. Hristo came by to lap me on what was my second-to-last lap, which was great because it meant I didn't have to survive another lap :) . So I managed a supersteady race, taking advantage of the attrition to come home 5th. Managed to keep my champ chances somewhat alive :) . Now back in the Fez for Virginia. Unfortunately that means I'll have to take the BRM again for the Riverside rerun before I can get into the Fez again for the two events after that, but oh well, you can't have it all :) .

Grats Hristo & podium! Also for the Privateers!

Tom.

Congrats to Hristo for another solid win and to jhalli and Al for your podium finishes!   :clap:

I couldn't stick around in chat because I had to feed my neighbors cows before it got dark.  Really!

I got a great start with the Lotus advantage from P6 on the grid and gained two spots on the run to T1.  I had P3 for a couple of laps until some sloppy driving (and Johns talent) got him into my draft on the front straight where he darted past in the braking zone to T1.  But unfortunately it didn't end well.  Sorry John, I wasn't trying to be reckless, but I thought I saw a legitimate chance to get the spot back.  I'm very relieved I didn't end your race.  Your draft and late brake pass got you past me but when you scrubbed over to the wall I thought I might get back under you.  That complex is not an easy place for side by side scrapping and I couldn't hold the right hand lane as well I wanted to.  I was relieved to see you didn't have a GPL explosion.  Sorry for the contact but hope you judge it as a racing incident.

A few laps later I myself scraped down the same armco and let John back past me along with jhalli.  JWalters almost got by too but after some close racing at the hairpin I came out ahead and slowly opened a gap.  The next 20 or so laps to the end was just a matter of keeping it under control.  Try as I might I wasn't going to gain on John or jhalli.  After John crashed out I inherited P4 for the last few laps.

I decided to spend a few tokens on a fast car for this race and chose the Eagle which was probably not a good choice for this track. The top speed and acceleration come in handy down the straight but I'd forgotten how its long wheelbase makes it cumbersome through twisty sections. The Fez might have been a better choice.  I made a good start gaining a place or two but soon had an off caused by too sharp a jab on the throttle (using up my ShiftR allowance) followed by a friendly nudge and I was way down the field. A second off a little while later (same place, cause and result as the first) saw the end of my race.

On the bright side, there were no technical problems for the second race running so it's on to the unknown challenges of VIR.

Amongst the Privateers, I arrived in Mexico city, with a car I felt, was destined for greatness. The Brabham was handling beautifully, and for insurance, I'd smuggled a smoke generator past the scrutineers, which I'd be able to turn on at the entrance to Peralta, every lap.  I figured with this, I'd either blind, or asphyxiate the opposition . . . in the nicest sort of way, of coarse!  So how could I loose? ;D

Though starting from row two, I remained confident, and within a few laps, took the lead.  I had the race falling nicely into place, right up to the moment in which, the engine blew up!  And from that point, it all became a bit of a short shifting blur. But I seem to remember chasing hard after a Lotus, at one point, and Bernie's Brabham at another. And having a vicious Eagle nipping at my heels for half the race, as well as, one or two daring passes in there somewhere?  Anyway, second place was the result, after a tremendous race, and some fantastic battling from those around me!

I'd be more specific, but my computer was unable to save a replay, after the race, though it tried twice.  Evidently, it's been programmed to refuse incriminating evidence . . .  In the heat of battle, Bernie and I had come across what I'd assumed to be lapped traffic.  With a defending car in the way, and not enough track, I'd clipped Bernie's wheel.  So I may owe a Brabham an apology.

One further detail . . . when my beautiful, handcrafted V8 blew up, I got an attack of the red mist, and blew past the pits without a stop and go.  However, in my defense, I did do the go part quite well!  Grumble!  So with a compliance rate of 50%, I'd like to request only half my hard earned points be deducted?  >:(

Anyway, an inspired drive by Ronnie, to take the top spot, and a great fight back from Bernie in third.  And a mention for our new youngster Toni, who signed on just hours before the race, and almost stole the show!

Shame to miss it (sure you didn't miss me:D) but I was nursing a sick Guinea Pig so I got some 'GP' time I guess.

Oh, forgot to mention a couple things.

Bob: look at your rejoins please, this is not the first time myself and others have had to take avoiding action to avoid a collision with you.

Starts - everyone was very civilised on lap 1 into T1, both chicanes and the hairpin. Kudos all around I think.

Was mulling over blowing a stack of tokens on a speedy chassis for this race but then remembered that Mexico has never been kind to me, so decided I'd better play it safe with the mid-priced Brabham. Very pleased with qually - a 48.1 which matched my Brab PB & put me 3rd on the grid. A clean start gave me a grandstand view of Hristo & Bob's rather-shortlived battle for the lead & once Bob went off, H hit the Bulgarian Boost button & simply disappeared off into the distance, leaving me in a lonely second place. Sadly I wasn't going to be left alone for long & I could see Rick & John gaining on me, but then something happened to them & I had some breathing space.

After almost 20 laps, amazingly I was still in 2nd however now both Juha & John were reeling me in quickly. Frustratingly I had no response - looking at the race laptimes my fastest was a second off my Q time :-[ I can only explain that by the fact I must've been taking it way too easy into T1 - mainly because T1 had ended most of my previous visits to Mexico so I was scared of trashing it there once again... Either way Juha was soon right on my tail & we had an exhilirating battle for several laps before he finally pulled ahead with a nice move into T1 (where else?) John underlined my relative lack of pace both out of the last turn & into T1 by passing me in the same place a lap later. Was gutted to drop out of the podium places so near to the end, but then John had a big crash after clipping the armco & that promoted me back to 3rd. Unfortunately I went off avoiding his car & must've lost at least 10 seconds which meant Rick's Lotus was now bearing down on me fast. A couple of worrying laps seeing Rick charging toward the first hairpin as I headed off in the other direction ensued so I was very relieved to keep my concentration & hold on to 3rd until the chequered flag.

WD to Hristo for a dominant win & amazing pace in the Honda - also to Juha for great pace in the Coop & to all the other finishers, especially Rick who made me sweat at the end.

Congratulations to the other podium/finishers in the Privateers race. Once I got in front I hoped I had the speed to stay there in the lotus but prayed every lap that the engine did not blow (I had never finished a race in the lotus before, ever). With no prib due to raster v1/v2 issues prior to the race I approached every car in front of me with due caution. On the plus side I had no idea how close the chasing pack was at the end. Nonetheless getting prib up and running is a priority. Well done that man Toni on a superb debut.

Not one of my favourite tracks but pleased to see the chequered flag for the 2nd time this season. Can thoroughly recommend BT service which gives me a solid connection, having now extricated myself from Orange who are about as useful as a 67 BRM with a bad set up.
Well done to Ronnie with a qualification that I’m guessing would not have disgraced the Works grid. Maddog, Bernie and newbie Toni were not too far behind so I settled for a mid-field spot. Took it rather to easy on the approach to T1 giving up about 3 places in the process. Was expecting the Armco’s and polos to collect a few scalps but the guys in front ran a tidy race and after 28 laps of  hard effort I was only able to move from 6th to 5th.

poor overall performance with small mistakes here and there and not finding the flow. I was determined to respect but not fear those horrible things around almost all the bends but I started to fear them quiet early in the race. result was sloppy lines( so sloppy I actually span because of it once) and poor laptimes. The good thing was I managed to finish the race and 6 th was better than my qual position.I think Mexico is a track that usually craves some casualties and that affected my race.Kept thinking "not me not me" and it affected my race on both good and bad....a race I more or less aimed for survival not racing even that was not what I had in mind on the startline.Lol I was looking so much in the mirror in the start so I braked one tree to early. lost two spots there.(Tom as well)sorry for that Tom

Greetings all and thx for a fun and exciting race yesterday. It was a little hectic for me to register and get a place in the race before start but it worked great. Thx Vosblod for that :)
It was a close and fun race ,a tight chase all through the race .Made some errors but was lucky to finish 4th. Great race from all and nice behavior on track. Congratulations to podium finishers .
The main thing for me is to learn more of this great sim and meet nice people that share the passion. You seem like a fine group and i appreciate that you accept a newcomer like me.
See you on track , take care all.

My start from P3 was poor , I couldnt get the Brabby off the line and lost a lot of ground up to T1. then found the handling on race fuel was iffy so drove a very careful few laps till I got the hang of things which dropped me further back , team mate Mike was snapping at my heels and was half expecting him to draft past on the long straight .

From Lap 4 through 18 I found myself chasing Maddog Martin who was warping all over the track , sometimes dissapearing completely then bursting back into view in front of me, I didn't dare risk any kind of overtake so decided to hang back for a while and see what developed , eventually he had a polo "moment" and I was able to overtake and set off on a clear track with Martin in pursuit . Unfortunately at the same time we came up to lap Hannah , there was some confusion about which line she was taking into the Peralta corner , Martin I think tried to take advantage but 3 abreast into this corner was really asking for it and sure enough I got it .

After the airobatics display finished I was suprised to find myself still intact , the car was well and I could at last find my rythm, eventually catching up for P3 , quite suprised at the result cos I thought this race series was Pro damage and was expecting to have to S/R and P.I.  :o

Grats to Ronnie (alien in the making ? ) salutations to Tony for losing the podium ont last lap and escpecially to Snowy R.I.P. little chap  :'(

Sorry been calling Martin Mike  ::)

Now amended  ;)

Mike would be a rather unsuitable choice for a christian name and surname dont you think  ;D

Just watched the server replay through tears of laughter at the on track antics. I thought I had a rough time through some of the traffic but Martin, Bernie and Toni (your comment above is far too polite) seem to have had a worse time than me. Looking forward to seeing everyone next time out.

All results now uploaded and replays in the usual place. From an initial review it looks like Maddog might be a very Mad Dog, as failing to take a Stop and Go after as Shift R gets a Disqualification. Also, was someone a bit naughty in their Privates by getting a sneaky lap in before 30 minutes to go? Ah well moderation in due course...

My race was mediocre. I expected to be the Works runt and a severe lack of practice didn't help. Got 8th by no spins/attrition.

That lasted for a short while but then Tim decided to give me the place which was awfully kind of him.

You were reeling me in by that point so as you were my teamie I thought I'd just yeild in the name of team points - short of a mass pileup among the front runners my own chances of a decent haul were pretty slim  :)

Even slimmer after I somehow hit the armco in the Hairpin from my normal braking point.....  ::)

good racing, simply didnt have time to do any practise but i was a confident with Cooper.

Start was poor and someones Honda went by, few laps later catch up John Robert and then Al Heller Brabham who surrender with little fight, good racing. My pace was suprise to me but setup/car combination was good this time.

grats Hristo for win with excellent honda speed!

See you at next one. :)

Would you please send me your set up. I am in privateers and was driving a Cooper as well.

My race was in the abyss and I am interested in what you ran.

Thank you,

I think in order to make Shift-R allowable the race must be run as Intermediate, not Pro, which has "advanced" damage model instead of "realistic".
