I think I'm looking forward to this more than Watkins Glen. I love this circuit.

Anyone who couldn't see the password for the Watkins Glen race should now see "you are a second reserve" above and have access to the password when it's released. My apologies for the cock up at Watkins. :-[

I can confirm that it works for me, I am 'second reserve'

If reserves are to delay joining the server to give the FT guys priority could the announcements please include a time before which reserves are not expected to join?

Done - the first 1/3 of practice will be when FT drivers join, after that - it's a free-for-all.

Nice one Dave, I was panicking on Sunday trying to get the password, I originally signed up as full time, is there any reason why I'm a second reserve ?.

Thanks.

@Dave, just stuck my vote in, I thought I did it the other day when Beta signed up, clearly not , really looking forward to Phillip Island tho, it's one of my favourite tracks.

@Blunder, Lady Luck was smiling at me at the Glen, Phillip Island will be a whole different story, only thing I ever raced there is the V8 Supercar.

I might throw up a practice session on Monday 27th, will be good to get as many of us on as possible, see what the closing speeds are like.

Take it easy guys.

I have so far managed a 1.48.3 in the Mustang, so I reckon front runners will be in the high 1.45s.

Had a blast with the same set up from Watkins and got a 1:46.4, optimal is at 1:45.9, tyres are falling off after 7-8 laps or so though.

I've given it a quick go in the Vette.  1:26's with a full tank, might get to 25's, but that pace won't last long. The right front tyre will be completely destroyed very quickly if you aren't carefull.  This will be a tough one for the Vettes I think.

Ian

I'm not sure many will be doing consistent 1:45's. Race pace feel like high 46's to me but this is probably one of my weakest tracks.

Post by: popabawa on December 29, 2010, 12:05:45 PM +0000
I'm going to revise that previous statement upwards a couple of tenths! :D

Fully fueled, I can do 46's on a good lap but low 47's are more realistic. Chuck in a few Corvette's and they'll soon go out of the window too!

Tyre wear will be a big factor here, it should make for a very interesting race :)

I did a few practice laps last night  :o Best is off yours Pops :( High 47 so I'll be quite a bit slower normally. FR tyre wear is evil.

Personally I think this is going to be a tough race overall. The Mustang is ok around the circuit but really doesn't leave alot of room. So it's not us being ignorant (99% of the time).  It just takes up most of the track!

Good luck though gents and pleeeeeease be patient! I want all 4 wheels pointing in the same direction this week :D

Yes - I'm looking to get it running at 1830hrs.  The server should be available 1830-2230.

I'm in Edinburgh at the moment - heading south tomorrow - so I won't be able to make it tonight, but I'll be racing tomorrow.

Rats...  :'(

Robin and I had a little incident...worse thing was I ended up in the barrier with what looked like little damage but
I was stuck on the barrier and had to reset :(
I then outbraked myself slightly while distracted by traffic / Rob spinning in front of me and Nick passing me! :(
Sorry Nick, nothing I could do :( (once I had made the error.) I was crossing my fingers you had seen me!

Exited... I hate not finishing :(

Ploughed into an incident at hairpin. Concentrating on the car ahead of me, thought I'd made a pass at the hairpin to find cars moving across the track to rejoin. Nothing I could do.  Reset didn't work, my car stayed damaged. ??!

Not exactly a good start for my first race back.

Grats to those that finish.

I hope the next race is better.

No problem it was tough out there to pass and be passed, so only one accident like that is not a bad count.

Caught out by Jamie on Lap 7, thought he was going past a Mustang on the right and he broke instead, not expecting brakes at that point I sent him off track, sorry for that one.

Apart from that, bloody hard work, managed not to hit any Stangs on the way past although on such a tight track with such a speed differential there were a few hairy moments.

I really shouldn't have raced that one ....

Having got back from a week away 20 mins before the server went up it's fair to say I was unprepared ....

It was pretty uneventful from the back of the field, although me and Andy mixed it up for a while.  I had a perfect pit stop - a first for me, before getting caught out when Mike span it and I ploughed into him.  After that there was black smoke spewing out of the back of my car so a reset was in order...

More mistakes let Andy overhaul me again, and a few others too ... and after more tragic attempts at lapping I retired before I took anyone out.

After driving over 350+ miles to get back today .... that was too much driving ... not enough fun.

I suppose i couldn't ask more of my first race. The first stint went by quite uneventfully after i got a good jump, except when i had to escape some mess at the first hairpin. I pitted on lap 26 i guess and rocketed out of my stall... 110kmh was probably a bit too fast thou! So i served a neverending 15 seconds penalty on the following lap, but in the end i was able to pass Raimo after some two wide action and Dave taking advantage of a Corvette.

The quality of driving was very good despite PI being quite narrow and at times difficult for overtaking. Congrats all! See you next time!

got to say a very BIG thank you to everybody on track today that was a cracking race it's not a very wide track for 2 cars with such a big speed difference but from my POV the awareness was superb {must have been as i didn't have a scratch on Dans nice paint work ;) }

That was intense. :o

Was pleased to start 3rd on the grid and was happily chugging away, trying to keep wear on the RF tyre to a minimum.  All was going well until it came to pitstop time, I was faffing around with the fuel and ended up outbraking myself at the hairpin which let Darren by.  Dived into the pits a few laps later but had a shocking stop after a Mustang pulled out in the pitlane (no idea who, but no hard feelings anyway).

After the stop, I set about catching Darren and keeping Mike at arms length.  I wasn't really making any headway on Darren, but I wasn't losing much time to Mike either so I sort of resigned myself to a cruise to the finish and a podium.  That was until I made a balls up of the slow right hander and ran onto the grass, allowing Mike right onto my tail.  All of a sudden I had to pickup the pace and defend like crazy.  I held station for a few laps until coming up behind a Mustang at the uphill left hander.  The speed differential caught me out slightly and I locked up the rear which allowed Mike by.

He gradually pulled away form this point although some traffic did allow me to keep in touch until the final lap at least.

Overall, pleased with 4th place but a little disappointed that with a tad more compsure it could have been better.  Grats to the podium.

Laguna next.......I'd take 4th there all-day, hate the place. ;)

Well I failed epically down under but I must admit I had some fun.

Got an ok start and was battling with the pack. Had a scrap with Martin and a Vette and unfortunately I tried passing Martin on the outside and we both ended up in the gravel. Unfortunately that left Martin in the wall. :(

Got back in to the groove all alone and was tagged on the front straight by a Vette which broke my steering. I then reset and coming out of the pits tagged on to the back of Raimo where I stayed for pretty much the duration. He pitted and I carried on. Missed the melee at the hairpin and basically kept out of trouble.

Got a tap off one of the leading Mustangs in the last ten laps. It's amazing the already bargelike handling on the Mustang can actually get worse!

I hope the GT2 Ford hurries up :)

(The patience of some of the Vette drivers was seriously ace tonight. Thank you)

After starting 4th on the grid, I'm very happy to finish 2nd.  Steven was in a class of his own and totally deserved the win.

I had great battles with Brendan and Mike in the first stint, but after my pit stop I found myself all alone with a 15 second gap back to Brendan.  Phillip Island is a tough track and the smallest lapse in concentration can end your race.  With that in mind and the fact that Steven was miles down the road, I decided not to push too hard and to do enough to keep the gap back to 3rd above 10 seconds.  With 2 laps to go I was bang on target, but then I seemed to find at least 2 Mustangs fighting for position at every corner. :o   Not wanting to ruining their races and also risk ending my own, I took a cautious but very slow approach.  In hindsight maybe I was too cautious especially as Mike gained 6 seconds on the final lap, making me sweat during the final 2 corners. :)

Great race.  Congrats to those who finished and to those who finished on the podiums...

Thanks Adam for hosting...

See you at Laguna, it's going to be interesting.  ;D

That was intense. :o

Intense is a very good word for it.

Made a spur of the moment decision to switch to GT3 only to find the grid quite lopsided compared to round one. With Picnic in the Mustang too we had a good spread for Team Shark though and I was pleasantly surprised to find more steering feel than I remembered from when I last drove the car, allowing me to show some reasonably good pace, well short of Dario's speed but comparable to the rest.

Not quite sure how I ended up ahead of Raimo after qualifying 3rd but I threw away the place when I dropped a wheel off and fell back to third before my stop. Fuel usage was higher than I expected so I had to stop slightly ahead of half distance. Bumped the fuel up one click thinking that would be plenty and changed tyres; resumed somewhat down the order but on clear track and pushed very hard until Raimo and Dario stopped. Was surprised how much time I gained over Raimo, and even more surprised to see Dario pit again to serve his penalty.

That put me in an unexpected lead and I carried on pushing hard, but the gap reduced fairly quickly and I was wearing my tyres out muich quicker than during the first stint. To male matters worse, the fuel was looking increasingly tight, but with a big gap behind the pair of them I decided to just keep pushing, and if they both got past me I would splash and dash. Once past Raimo, Dario wasted no time catching and passing me, and Raimo was soon all over me like a bad suit, but with the laps ticking down I somehow managed to hold him back despite him being very obviously quicker in some places.

Fuel was becoming critical and I had about a lap and a half left when the white flag came out. After defending like mad for one final lap I crossed the line with half a litre remaining to take a hard fought second place. :sweatdrop:

The Corvettes were mostly very sensible. I think there were two occasions where they tried to pass round the outside of T2 and T9 when I was on worn rubber and just couldn't hold a tight line, and we had one very scary moment near the end where Mustangs on three difference laps and Corvettes all ended up packed into turns 2, 3 and 4 with unfortunate consequences for one or two of them, but these things happen.

Wow epic racing again guys  :D

Could hold a decent pace and stayed out until lap 28. After pit Dave was in front and Dario behind.
Dario came up on my back pretty fast and even if its difficult to pass. He only needed 1,5 laps to find a way past  :D
Hot on his wheel I managed to follow him to catch Dave, and we had a very enjoiable last laps with accident in front of us, and at one point we where side by side through a copple of turns with vetts and laped stangs. We both survive and I got one more chanse to draft and pass down to hairpin, but a lapping vette came up behind so I didnt dare to take the risk.
Those last laps was crazy, and I reccon Dave was sweating as much as I did

Cant wait till next race, even tho Laguna is not my favorite track  :)

I think the results import is broken, I seem to be leading the GT3 Drivers Championship!!! :o :D

I knew I'd struggle here, it's not my favourite track and there were some big boys out to play as well... After a small family emergency interrupted qualifying I decided to stick with my 'tortoise v hare' approach and take it steady and it pretty much paid off.

A safe 4th was about as much as I could expect, not being able to even come close to matching the pace of the top 3, grats guys.

You Corvette drivers were fantastic 8)

I think Samu said he'd be joining us next race, that means I have 2 weeks to enjoy my championship lead...

That had to be the hardest thing ive done in Iracing, concentration levels needed were intense.

Qually was mad, and i just couldn't find a clear lap until one final go with 3 mins left and managed to sneak up to 6th.

Start was great, was keeping up with the guys ahead and managing to keep Ian behind, settling down until the Stangs came up  :o  They were all very good but it was very hard to keep your head in the traffic. Made two little mistakes when i was over cautious going into the last corner staying behind a Stang and Ian took advantage (good move), and then i got confused in traffic and missed my braking point and hit the brakes to hard and spun across the corner luckily not hitting anyone but this let Simon past.

Was managing the tyres ok and did a reasonable pitstop and then was mostly on my own for the second stint trying to catch Simon but had no chance really unless he made a mistake.

Overall happy to finish and 7th isn't to bad but could of been a little better.

Grats to both podiums.

that was a cracking race with you from the start;)

I could keep pace with you but to pass needed something to give me the advantage :o I saw you had eased off to see what the Mustang was gona do I had a fraction more time to see what was going on  and the gap started opening up I was able to keep in tight and  I floored the gas and went for it,    it was my only chance so I took it  ;)

That went as well as could be expected :)

I was very lucky not to miss this race with a broken hand!  (Wii bowling should not be done close to a coffee table) but it was OK after practice and I managed a new PB in qually for only 5th on the grid!

All i could do was drive my own race and see what came of it.  Stayed with the lead group for a bit and got past Darren when he misjudged a Stang.  I repaid him the favour quite a few laps later and I cold not close up again.  After a spin I was even further back and I was almost resigned to 5th place.

Ran as long as the fuel would go, which let me take a shorter fill and a fresh set of tyres.  Now I just went for it to see what would happen.  Surprisingly I was gaining a bit.  Then I gained a lot on Brendan and with 10 to go I was right on him when he went off at the hairpin.  Piled on the pressure and was rewarded when he locked the rears and I nipped past into T10.  Had to push really hard to keep him far enough back that I could still plan my approach to traffic and it worked out.  I almost didn't realise I had caught right up to Darren on the last lap, but I couldn't get close enough to worry him, but 3rd was excellent! ;D

Great race guys and congrats to Steven, you were in a different class today :)

Can I hijack this thread with a quick advert for Tuesday's sprint league race?

It's Indy cars at Road America.

Thanks for listening.  Please carry on.  ;D

Absolutely gutted to miss this one, had been looking forward to it since the Watkins round but having been away for NY just couldn't make it back in time unfortunately.

Brilliant to see the good support for the series continue, catch ya at Laguna!

After my false start at Watkins Glen, that was much more like it ;D  I was a bit worried about my race pace after practice on Saturday, as I was really murdering the right-front, but I tried a few tweaks before the race and, for once, they actually worked. The car was a bit scary on cold tyres but, after the first few laps, I had about 10-12 laps where the tyres didn't really drop-off at all. I'd even go as far to say the handling was sublime!

I will apologise to the guys at the front of the grid for my rather over-ambitious start. I didn't want to keep the field bunched all the way down the straight to the green but forgot just how far down the straight the start/finish line was. I took off and it seemed to be an age before the race 'officially' went green. I normally hate it when people bolt as soon as the pace car comes in but I almost did exactly that.

Finally, I'll just reiterate what others have said, the Mustang drivers were all superb. I'm sure I probably pulled a few dubious manouevres on some of them but you only have a split-second to decide which way to go sometimes, and you don't always make the right decision everytime! That said, I only had one really scary moment in the entire race, which was just one of those things anyway. I just want to thank the person who decided to put a gravel trap on the outside of the lefthand kink before the hairpin, otherwise I'd have been buried in the wall! :)

Congrats to all the other podium finishers and thanks to Adam for organising everything :)

Some race video.

First section is what happens the first time the Vette's lap the Mustangs, then some in-car with me chasing Brendan near the end for 3rd place and some TV cam from after I got past him.

Great vid Mike!

The first section is pretty exciting seeing the lapping, it's pretty hectic but nice to see very controlled and sensible driving overall :)

Any chance someone could make the replay file available...I forgot to save mine, and I need to look at an incident.
I know that the file size is big but I would really appreciate it.

Cheers

I always use www.filefront.com (http://www.filefront.com) for uploading large files, as I don't think they have a filesize limit. You just do a quick registration, upload the file, share the finished link and you're done :)

If you did, I'd appreciate it too, as I'm missing about the first 15 minutes.

Possible, but I doubt it as I have 8Gb RAM.

The old addage of "it's not how much you've got but how you use it" may ring true here :D

Moderation is done on this one :)

Whilst I don't want any more work on the moderation front - if you could raise reports for contacts etc it would be appreciated.  Even if no action is requested, it would be good to have things reported so we can highlight any lessons to be learnt.

As a Mustang driver - that was one of the better places to get passed to be honest :).  It's all a learning process.
