I've not run a mixed class race round here thus far, but on the Legends forum the consensus is that there's a world of trouble waiting for us between turns 2 and 5.

As such - can I ask for as many of you to turn out up for the Saturday evening practice session so that we can get a handle on what we are all going to have to do to ensure a race with as few incidents as possible.

Your right Adam, its basically a no go zone if your an impatient Vette driver with our mixture of cars.

Personally...I can't wait  ;D

I had a look on the world records page in iRacing - you can get a good feel for the times you should be hitting.  When I set up the champ I took the P50 time of 1:17.268 as a marker for the lap times at the sharp end of the grid.

Same time as always (by always I mean when I don't forget to do it ...) :)

It'll be running 6-10pm.

I "should" be in there for a while - but it's my wedding anniversary ... so I might get a talking to if I'm driving for too long :D.

Hmm, Not feeling the love for this track in the Vette, I can't get any kind of comfortable setting yet.   Off the pace again, everyone is getting faster and I'm not  ???

I'm having the same in the Mustang... This is one of my favourite iRacing tracks but I loathe it in the Mustang. Every corner I'm bouncing, understeering and oversteering all at once. Maybe we can swap cars Mike? ;D

I wouldn't worry Mike, you always say how slow you are and then finish in the top 3-5 anyway. :P

Just to remind everyone - the password for the race isn't the same as it was for the first half of the season.

Hoping we get a good turnout this evening, but it is going to be a tough one for sure.

Sorry guys, I'm going to miss this one, I've had some kind of virus all week and although I think I'm (finally) recovering it's knocked me for six so haven't been able to turn a lap all week.

Have a good race all and I hope to be back for Silverstone.

Sorry to hear that Pops - I think we're all going to feel like we've been knocked for six after an hour and half mixed class action around here!

I'm with Shark, something tells me those times are coming regardless Mike - just apply the Radical driving mentality to this beast and you'll be well on your way...even if it perhaps isn't quite as responsive!

I wouldn't be surprised to see a small turn-out here, it's a really difficult track. I know I'm probably in the minority but I can't stand the place! I think it will definitely be a race of survival, if you make it to the end you'll probably pick up a lot of points due to the attrition rate, so it's worth sticking with it. And I should probably listen to my own advice as I kept throwing it at the scenery last night

This is going to be my first race using G27, Clutch and H-Shifter so going to be an interesting race for me :)

Slowly improving all the time, but expect to be at the back of the pack lapping in the 1.40s tonight.

I kinda like this track.  Some fiddly bits at the start, but the last few corners are fun.

Rubbish.

PB in qually, but then I nudged Burtoner in T1 which ended up with me rubbing the wall and damaging the steering.  That led to a spin later in the lap dropping me right to the back.  After recovering some composure, I proceeded to drive it into the wall on the outside of the final turn ... too busy watching out for the Corvettes.

One "fast" tow later I was back on track, picked up a couple of places ... and then drove into the same codding wall on the outside of the final bend.

Needless to say ... I am ashamed of that display of driving.  Silverstone can't come quick enough.

my line was a bit iffy today first time in a long time I've had any problems but the in-game meter hit the red a couple of times  :-\and was up and down in the yellow big time  :-\

sorry to anybody I touched  in that crash derby ..sorry that track them cars just don't work this time, the speed difference is way to much, the number of time I was cut up was crazy ......... not blaming the Mustang drivers they didn't have time to think let alone react  ::)

the event which I think may have taken a couple cars out ..sorry didn't save replay a mustang had been wide going into turn and I thought was staying wide after letting 1 Vette go but I assume he didn't know I was there and he cut right across to the apex unfortunately I had already committed to the turn thinking he was gona stay wide by the time I realized I went on the brakes but there just wasn't time I think it tapped him unsure as the Vette right on my tail had no where to go and tapped me  just bad timing, this damaging the car I went most of the lap feeling it out but it was to bent so I took the repair came out and was right in the middle of the front guys battling through the Mustangs, I had my eye to much on the mirror trying not to get in the way and ended up going off  don't know what damage there was as I decided that was not fun at all so decided to go do something a lot more fun

that couldn't have been fun for any of the Mustang guys that track is to short don't give any time for a breather  before they where getting mowed down by the Vettes

I hope none of the other races are on tracks this short/twisty  as it's just not fun  :-\

again sorry for any damaged caused to any cars  :-\

Much better race for me than last time out where I wasn't with it. I think I actually helped generate some team points too instead of leaving it all up to Mike. :) Didn't collide with anyone, just the odd wheel off and one spin when I was so excited about getting under 1:18 lap time I promptly threw it in the kitty litter. 9th to 4th is not a bad evening.

When racing in a pack of Vettes and with all the blind crests it was so dangerous coming up to Mustangs. You couldn't see them on the radar (F3) cause it was filled with Vettes and then at the last moment you'd see someone duck out and you had to get it together as you realised there was a Mustang somewhere in the midst but half the time you weren't sure which car it was going to be! ;D Scarey! Once the big packs of Vettes eventually dispersed it was much easier to lap people.

It would be nice if there were two classes of car that weren't so far apart, like we had in GTR2 with GT1 and GT2, but there you go.

That was me I think, i glanced at the mirror and saw you quite back so i set the turn up like usual, T1 is rather hit or die in a wall so i really couldn't have checked the mirror later. Then i saw you going for the inside, i let off the brakes and went wide, sad to hear that ended your race. I apologize but the only other time i went wide in t1 to let someone by i almost killed myself so i didn't feel like doing it again and just let you two go before T2.

My race was rather uneventful, i was hoping for Samu to show up as i though i had the pace to give him a run for his money thou :(
I pulled away after a bit of a lame contact with Jonathan, bummed to see it happen. I decided to pit one more time for fresh tyres to try and get that 33 but it didn't really work out, thou i did improve my race best.

I found this combo surprisingly entertaining, i hate the track with a passion but it seemed to flow quite well in the Mustang, so I enjoyed just lapping it and time went by rather quickly. GJ Raimo and both podiums!

I was Oily'd!   ;)

I was really sad to see that happen - after completely cocking up my fuel strategy I binned it in turn 1 whilst trying to set things ready for my pit stop (why the herring I didn't leave it for later in the lap I don't know!) and struggled round to the bridge to reset, losing touch with the soup/Ginsters/Raimo battle in the process. Took lots more fuel than I thought I needed, knowing that I wasn't sure how much was required... and that dropped me back onto Blunder's tail when he pitted. Look like it could be a great fight, until Oily lost it over the crest of 2/3 and moved just as Blunder was trying to dodge round him. :-X

That left me in no man's land... only to find myself needing a splash and dash with 10 to go; I only managed to stay ahead of Robin as he had to do the same. Add a second spin and I was never in any position to give Jasper anything to worry about.

The result was as good as I could've hoped for based on pace but I'm disappointed with my own performance - I was guppy lucky to finish as high as 5th.

It would be nice if there were two classes of car that weren't so far apart, like we had in GTR2 with GT1 and GT2, but there you go.

Still waiting for the Ford GT - who knows whether we'll get that before Oulton Park. ::)

Well, I actually had two races to do tonight. I was visiting relatives today and stayed for dinner, so I left with what I thought was plenty of time to make it to tonights event. Unfortunately the traffic had decided otherwise as some guys had crashed onto each other creating quite the traffic jam. When it was finally over I think I broke a couple of speed limits getting home and with just a few minutes to go fired up the computer. When I finally started up the iRacing site my computer clock was already showing 21:00 so it was gonna be close... After the game was done loading I entered the server, and within a second the "drive" button greyed out and qualifying was over. Couldn't have been any closer!! ;D

Without any qualifying I had to start at the back of the field obviously and had lots of great fights working my way up the field. Thanks everyone for that and the Corvettes for being patient, there were some hairy moments of course but nothing serious. Special mention to Robin Durrant when we nearly took each other out when getting out of pit road, gave us both a good scare ;) But it was soon forgotten as we had a couple laps of awesome side by side racing. Thanks mate! Great fun.

With just about 5 minutes to go I was running fourth, about 15 seconds behind Mark Fletcher who suddenly completely lost his pace, not sure what happened there but he seemed to have some damage to the front of his car... All in all I very much enjoyed this race and all things considered I'm very happy with third place!

Well I have to say, I think I enjoyed that more than any other race I've been in.

I hadn't practiced on here at all and just stuck with the setup I had for Laguna (I missed Daytona), it felt pretty stable and I know the circuit but only in a Formula Mazda.

Qualified alright but it's never my strong point. Had a good start and kept out of trouble. Couldn't quite get hold of the leading group but just kept going. Had various battles, one with Peter and as mentioned above one with Jasper. I entered turn 1 with a Corvette fast approaching I was too busy concentrating on that, I didn't see Jasper leaving the pitlane. Just soo glad I didn't take you out, I'd have felt awful.

Had a really good dice with him all the way round for a good few laps, I have to say, that was one hell of an overtake Jasp :)

Got caught by Dave after my late pitstop (1 set of tyres all race), not sure fuelling to capacity first off is best though.

Can't wait for Silverstone, gutted to be using the Historic version though. Vale is immense!

So sorry Martin, just watched the replay and that was shocking - I wasn't where i thought I was on the road at all, spin disoriented me totally but it's not an excuse. Just really, really carp awareness on my part.

Post by: Mike Wrightson on February 13, 2011, 11:19:10 PM +0000
Well, that turned out OK ;D

I never really look forward to this track, and I was making hard work of it fiddling with the setup.  In the end I went back to the fixed setup and stiffened the rear ARB a click.  Then just went out and drove, setting my most consistent run of my entire practice!

With no low fuel running to speak of, I got out very early in qually, knowing I had to make the early laps count.  I got a rather unimpressive 1:18, then hit traffic on every single lap the next 5 times round, then finally a clean lap and 1:17.4.  I knew that would be nowhere near enough and on the last lap of the session I got another clean lap and 1:16.7 ! A new PB with the car spluttering over the line.  Pole position!  I had not expected that, it's a wierd feeling to be on pole knowing that you aren't the fastest  :o

Nice clean start and amazingly I was pulling away a bit.  I wasn't going to get too carried away with that as catching a Mustang in the wrong place would wipe out 3 seconds at a time.  Despite this it took until half distance before Steven closed to within a second before making his stop.  I stuck it out a couple more laps and emerged still ahead!  I even ended up with a bit of a gap again as the traffic took it's effect on the gap.  Sadly, as we went into the last quarter of the race, I braked too deep into the chicane and had a slow, graceful spin into the grass.  Steven was now in the lead, but I stayed with him for quite a while before a second spin finally put paid to my chances of a win.  The tyres felt like mush now, so I just brought it home for 2nd.

That was a very tough race, congrats to Steven  and Karsten and the Mustang podium. :)

Excelent racing again guys  :)

After a very good qualifying session, it was shocking to se Jonathan got netcoded out at start of race  :o
When Dario just left me, I tried to get into a steady rythm and managed to hold 2nd position until Mark came up and passed me.
I tug on to his tail and managed to keep a decent distanse before pitstops, after my pitstop I joint in 2 seconds behind Mark again.
On cold tires and more fuel I dropped down 6-8 seconds before upping my pace and shortening the gap again. After coming out of the S'es I saw Mark had done a spin/got spun and I got a 5-6 seconds gap to him I managed to hold until end of race.

Looking forward to Silverstone  :D

Not looking forward to Silverstone as I don't much like the place. The only car I particularly like around Silverstone is an F1 car :o, although it should be one of the better tracks for multi-class racing given it's width over most of the club circuits iRacing have.

Still waiting for the Ford GT - who knows whether we'll get that before Oulton Park. ::)

Can't say the Ford GT enthuses me really. It's similar to the Corvette in it's weight and handling characteristics isn't it?

I was a bit annoyed with my self last night, my qualy was terrible, I just managed to get a decent lap in just before it ended placing me 2nd on the grid.
Just before the light went green I knew Dario was along side me and quite close, I though he was clear so slowly went to move over to fall in behind him.
Then all of a sudden it felt like I drove into a bus, the car went completely sideways, down the hill towards and into pit wall.
I did make contact with his car but it was a 0x, and strangely felt like an 8x  ???.

It was at this point the Benny Hill theme started playing, I took my fast tow, 21 seconds later I'm ready to go, ready to race.... I was a little to eager as I got pulled for speeding, so took another 'fast' tow. This one was just over 2 mins. It was at the point I decided I would just watch the race, and be Mr Fletchers spotter.

I have to admit I'm embarrassed with that performance, and thank full the only race I ruined was my own.

Grats to Ste and Dario on there wins, and grats to Jasper and Fletch coming from the back, it was a great race to watch.

Thanks for hosting guys.

Weight will be similar but it should be quite a different beast as its mid-engined and not as powerful.

Bit of a disaster.  I had the pace in praccy, and I was able to get a decent lap in qually but the race was just awful.  I had no pace whatsoever.  I must suffer from race nerves, cus the car felt verry different at the start of the race.  I span on lap 11 which put me back to 9th from 2nd and then I suffered a hit from another vette which put me into the tyre wall, I think either my car or his must have jumped a bit cause my replay shows me being hit by fresh air! no contact at all.  ???

Came back out well and truly last in class then could not avoid another driver when they spun, I just locked up.

Fitting end to a terrible race.

Well done to all stang drivers, very dicey out there and hard work making passes.

Grats to podiums for each class

See ya at the next one.

PS:  Simon, there is a car thats alot closer to the Vette in speed.  Ford V8 (best car in iRacing  )

Race of the season so far for me, I really had to work for that one. I wasn't particularly looking forward to it either as I really struggle to find any sort of consistency here. Qualifying was an absolute nightmare! I got off-tracks on my first two laps, just trying too hard, then, on what turned out to be my fastest lap, I had a huge tank-slapper in turn one. After some more laps caught up in traffic, and a spin, I eventually put the car over the wall in turn five! I decided to cut my losses and call it quits then :)

I can't remember everything that went on in the first 10 laps, there was so much happening. I had a huge lock-up into turn one on lap 2, when I under-estimated Karsten's braking point, and I was then fighting understeer on left-handers for the rest of the first stint. I managed to slipstream past Karsten into the chicane a few laps later and also passed Gazza almost immediately after. He'd got held up by a Mustang and I hadn't realised by just how much. I came steaming up and decided to thread the needle which, in hindsight, was a bit risky so early in the race. Fortunately, he realised what was going on and left me room, otherwise I could have caused a bit of carnage there. I ended up in second place and set about the 10 second gap to Mike. I got it down to a couple of seconds before my stop, although I think for the most part I was getting a bit luckier in traffic rather than using sheer outright speed to do it.

I cut the fuel mileage a bit fine at my stop and just spluttered to a halt in my pitstall. My first two laps out of the pits I then got quite badly held up in traffic, which negated any advantage from my early stop. Mike rejoined from the pits, at the same gap as from before the stops, and I promptly went straight on at turn 3 and lost even more time! I knew I had to go for broke now and drove as hard as I dared without throwing it in the wall. Just as I was closing up to Mike he unfortunately spun, gifting me the lead. It was a shame as I was looking forward to a nice battle. It wasn't quite over though as I got held up in traffic again and had another straight-on moment at turn 3, so Mike caught right the way back up to me. After a few close laps I started to eke the gap back out again, which was helped by Mike having another spin. I quickly dropped into 'bring it home' mode then for the last few laps. A cracking race and exactly why I love endurance races ;D

Congrats to Mike and Karsten on the other podium spots, and to Dario and all the other Mustang drivers. It couldn't have been an easy race for them and they all did a great job - it felt like I was in traffic on every single lap! So, off to tyre-shredding Silverstone next...at least that one should be easier for lapping :)

Probably my toughest race so far, mentally. The stress level was insane. It was so rare that I had a time to take a breather, not even the long backstraight gave me a chance, cause I had to line up/estimate the Mustangs. I so wish they would atleast release slick version of the Mustang, it would help so much with the Mustangs corner speed. The Speed difference felt huge on Road Atlanta, and if you got cought behind a Mustang, you could quickly loose 2 sec or more.
Following/chasing other Corvettes wasnt as stressing imo, but being chased was crazy, wich I was for most of the race. Especially the last half, after the pitstops, during wich I managed to jump 2 positions. James Steel was constantly gnawing into my lead, and had quickly cought up to me again, so it was a constant fight to keep James atleast 1 sec behind, out of striking distance. If I tried to relax it would cost me too much time, not because I was slower on track as such, but because I lost some of the very important initiative with the backmarkers, and would easily loose tons of time. I managed and could roll over the line in 3rd position. Pretty satisfied with the result and most of my performance. I didnt make any major mistakes, only a few missed apexes and wake up slides. No contact either - except the first time we encountered Mustangs. Completly bundled up, and someone behind me guessed wrong for the tight corner leading on to the backstraight.

In general very good job by the Stang drivers. There were a few misunderstandings, but thats just the nature of the game (still want to underline though, do not change your line for us, it will just make things worse).

Grats to the podiums, and anyone who finished really :).

Good stuff Jasper - some nice examples of how to make life easy for the lapping Vettes in there too  :thumbup1:

Nice video Jasper. All the Corvette drivers should watch that, just to see what the poor Mustang drivers have to put up with :)

Nice vid Jasper.  That was me going between you and Blunder, I shot the same move from my in-car for my own video, which is stuck on my race PC, which is dead :(
