Whilst not most interesting layout available at Silverstone, I'm hoping this will be as fun for all as the season opener at Watkins Glen.  It's certainly got lots of space, although the closing speeds are going to be immense!

As long as we're sensible going through Maggotts and Becketts I think that this could provide a real epic.  If we can try and encourage guys to attend that would be good.  It was nice to see another new face last race, and by all means if you know anyone that would be a good fit for the racing here please do encourage them to come along.

As ever we'll have a server up on the Saturday night, so please pop in and get a feel for the track/car combo, and to make yourselves aware of any areas where you'll really have to be on your toes.

Only two more races left after this ... so it's crunch time at the top of the table.  Really looking forward to this one.  In fact, with Sebring and Spa as race seven and eight ....  some really good racing to be had.

For you Mustang pilots, it's a double header at Spa this week - both the Grand Am and the Mustang Cup are there, I'll certainly be getting some practice in for the 120 min season finale!

I feel sick thinking about Spa.

I'm worried about the speed differential at Silverstone more than anywhere to be fair. Particularly Bridge.

I'll probably eat my words but I don't think traffic will be much of an issue here. There's only really Maggotts/Becketts and Vale into Club where it gets a bit of a one line race-track, there's plenty of space around the rest of the track. Who can tell though? There was more apparent acrimony from Daytona and yet Laguna went off without any incident at all, as far as I can tell. I wouldn't have expected that!

This layout is nice in the Corvette, loads of room to open the taps ;D  That said, having raced the official series here the past couple of seasons, overtaking is virtually impossible unless the car in front makes a mistake. Also, it's probably the next highest track to Phillip Island for tyre wear. Lots of long fast right-handers punish the left-front, so you're better going for a lighter fuel load and pitting early. Should be fun! :)

... overtaking is virtually impossible unless the car in front makes a mistake.

I presume that's in single class racing though?  Even with the space to play with round this one, I should imagine that the mustangs will create a few opportunities.

.... and in any case Ste .... when did you have to overtake anyone this season?! :D

Fair point actually Adam, I didn't really think about lapping. That's what happens when you post in a hurry...and apparently I use terrible grammar when I post in a hurry too! :D

Hey, I overtook two cars at Road Atlanta, fair and square! :P  Pity I got gifted the other positions though, I'd much prefer to earn them the hard way. Anyway, I'm a born pessimist, I don't take anything for granted :)

Just been doing some laps this afternoon, and the Vette feels really nice around here. Am at the low 37's (37.040 best so far) in 5 lap stints (fiddeling with setup) with 74 liters of fuel on board.
Im expecting to probably hit 36.5's's a couple of times. Will be a cool race I think :).

I'm probably not going to make this one because of band practice rescheduled to that evening, but it's all a bit unsure so maybe I'll show up anyway.
Good luck if I don't make it ;-)

How are the Mustangs getting on here? I fear we may be looking at lap times under 2:00 mark.

Yep same! Just getting a few laps in now but it's definitely more interesting with a few of you.

Unless anyone objects I reckon you could probably get away with starting the server 30-60 mins later Adam, last week it was quiet to begin with and we were gagging for more when it finished at 10pm!

Yeah I'm sorry to hear you can't make it Jasper - Hope you're at the next one!

Martin I'm nervous just knowing we'll be on the same track!  ;D

Will be on nice and early to get a feel for the Stang pace and lines - we were a bit short on them last night unfortunately. Did a few laps in one but it's not as good a practice as following I find.

Seems like a good time for some subtle promotion of another league series, starting this time next week  ;D

Running alternate weeks to the enduros, 8 sprint rounds where drivers get to race a different car each week but in a championship format - it's basically a nice excuse to use some of the cars lots of us have sat collecting virtual dust and I'm using the same scoring system as we do in the sprints...more details on the series home page.

No registration needed, just turn up on the night, plus there'll be a practice session on the Saturday nights prior.

Hate the Vette round here, couldn't get it to handle, couldn't run consistent laps.

Reasonable grid spot, then clobbered by the T1 incident.  Had a long think about whether I had the enthusiasm to continue and decided to try.  Shouldn't have bothered.  No pace or consistency at all, then when I caught Martin after Bridge, I had the slowest and most stupid spin in the world right into his path :(

Really sorry Martin.  Mine was wrecked again, glad to be out of it.

A race to forget at the end of a week to forget for me. My router decided to lockup just before qualy started, by the time I got that sorted and got back in I just tried too hard and couldn't do a representative time.

No idea what happened at Copse at the start but I got enough of a whack to need a reset. Decided just to go for broke then, I had nothing to lose by that point. Driving like that though was bound to end in disaster eventually and, sure enough, I clipped the grass into Stowe and that was all she wrote. Still, I suppose it was good practice for the official series this week!

I really liked this track and car combo, and was looking forward to the race.
Got collected in the T1 mayhem, had to tow it, so now it was just damage control and try to collect as many points as possible. With some 15 laps to go, my mind wanderd of a little (was thinking when tonights Top Gear episode is airing), and lost it coming onto the hangar straight, cause got on the wrong side of the inside curb. Hit the wall hard, but didnt have it in me for another tow. Stupid focus burp.

Im really sad to see the entry level dropping for every race, be it Endurance or IndyCar. Is it because of the new iRacing season perhaps, sundays especially, cause that is where most of the high SOF races etc are?

Yeah - I was dissapointed at the turnout too :(  I'll have to see what I can do to bring folk back in - kicking my teammates arses will help ... no Pops, Darren, Paul, Purds (plus the others).

My race was really enjoyable - and tense at the end!!

I got a clean start, although I got jumped by Martin and Robin.  After dropping back a bit I found a rhythm and got back on their tails - but we were very evenly paced so there wasn't really a sniff of a passing opportunity.

I got by Martin after he got caught up in an incident, and then I got on the tail of Robin, where I stayed until my stop.  Try as I might, i couldn't get enough of a run on him to look at a pass, so when I got the 5-to-go before the stop I put it in early, and hoped for a good outlap as I was expecting Robin to pit soon after.

Apparently Robin was having a "slightly" longer 1st stint than me ... and on the fresh rubber I was putting in good times and had a 15 second lead as he emerged.

However, my laptimes slowed down and Robin was reeling me in lap after lap.  I started getting some horrible understeer which led to a few nervous trips over the grass, and the gap closed ever faster.

The white flag was a welcome sight, with the gap having shrunk to 1.7 seconds, but an ugly line through Bridge had Robin all but alongside ... and a shocking couple of corners later he was!!  Thankfully I kept the car on the inside round the last bend, and managed to stay a whopping 0.2 seconds ahead.

I might not have had anyone in close attendance in the 2nd half .... but it still flew by, and what a finish!

Cheers Robin and Martin - really enjoyed the racing there.  Great fun.

:'( :'(  Cant believe i through that away!

With the mess at T1 behind i had every chance to just drive for the finnish as i had good pace, but a stupid little spin at maggots beckets left me in the middle of the track and i took a hit on the front, was still in 2nd but the car wanted to swap ends in the right handers and wouldnt turn into the lefts so was a real handful. Some how i was managing to keep simon at bay but he got me at the pitstop, i couldnt really fight back as the car was trying to chuck me off at every right turn.

Then eventually the ill handling got the better of me and i spun in the same place which let James through  :-\ again i couldnt really fight back so not a good one really.

Sorry to a Mustang i nudged at priory totally my fault.

Grats Ian Simon & James

Well,  I was the cause of the chaos at T1.  Sorry.  Got pushed wide onto the slippery strip of grasscrete, thought I managed to catch the slide;  I was wrong.  Effectively ended my race as well as three others.

One to forget.

That was one of the more bizarre races I've competed in. Well done Ian on the win.

I almost avoided the T1 troubles. I got the car slowed in time for two of the cars splitting either direction ahead and just as I thought I'd avoided everything to get going again, Mike's car appeared out of nowhere to which I again slammed on the anchors but ended up hitting his door. Dimitry did a good job behind me to stop too. By that time I had lost 20 seconds to the leaders and that was the difference in the end. Still, to finish 2nd when I was the 2nd slowest Vette can't be bad at all. ;)

Have to say Silverstone was really hard racing with the Mustangs. I thought it was going to be easy cause it was so wide, but the Mustangs were having to use a lot of the track and some of them using a lot of the track really sideways (Dario! :D :P) and with the entry speed to a lot of the corners being so fast it was almost impossible to judge whether you were going to get to the Mustang ages before the corner, at the corner or after the corner. But you had to make a decision a long way away from the corner and that made it incredibly hard.

Oh well, the grass was well mown after that race anyway, so that'll look nice for visitors. ;D

The start was mayhem but lucky to avoid it all. Was running with the big dogs and slightly dropping back. Martin tried a lunge at Priory but to no avail. Adam was then on my hind until he pulled in.

A rarity then occurred as I found myself leading the class. I kinda liked that feeling a bit too much and was being hounded again by the big dogs. All 4 of us in a very close train. I was basically being a nuisance. I apologise for that guys.

I found the pits and had a lame stop. I came out cursing as Adam was 15 seconds ahead with about 18 laps to go. I faniced a challenge and didn't really have much to lose.

The time came down gently and it actually seemed possible. Then I could see Adam in the distance. I set my quickest lap during that time and to be fair it was an excellent run. Luckily (for Adam) Ian lapped us with 3 laps to go. But it wasn't over until the fat bloke sang. Unfortunately I was still behind when he did but it was bloomin close!

Well done winners and thanks Adam for hosting. You were my sole target in the 2nd half :D

Nonsense - I think I owe you a pint, that provided some real entertainment and was my only shot at catching Raimo.

Really pleased to finally pick up a podium after a monster day of endurance racing. Did the 7am Grand Am Premiere race and got a creditable 4th place in a very strong field in the Mustang. Dropped into the 13:00 race to see how the snake splits worked out; was running in a solid 3rd place with a distant shot at 2nd in the Mustangs when I got taken out by a DP with less than 20 minutes to go. To say I was unhappy doesn't even start to describe it. :2guns: :cursing: :censored:

I really didn't know how tonight's race would go after all that other racing so it was a big surprise to set the fastest practice time, even if Silverstone has always been a good place for me, ever since my UKGPL days. Some semblance of normality was restore with 3rd on the grid in qualifying, but that all went out the window with the turn 1 mêlée and I dropped two places. That gave me a good scrap with Robin for a couple of laps; sadly any fight with Ginsters was not to be after he was "Corvetted". That left me chasing Raimo and Dario, and to my surprise they weren't really getting away.

A spin from Dario put me up to second before the stops; I was using more fuel than expected, so I stopped at the end of lap 20, knowing that Dario had probably already made his stop - he certainly had, and I found myself alongside him as I exited the pits, but with cold tyres and on the outside for Maggots I had to yield.

The story wasn't over, though - with Robin doing a very long first stint, we soon found ourselves in a train of four cars; first Raimo and then Dario though there way by, and by the time I managed to do the same they'd made a little break. Robin pitted soon after and I concentrated on trying to catch and put pressure on Dario, who was looking like his tyres were already well past their best. I only really had one corner where I was much stronger, the fast kink at Vale, but I could at least sit on his tail and hope that somewhere he'd be too busy watching his mirror and make another mistake.

Sadly it wasn't to come, but I was pretty happy to finally nail a podium finish after over 5 hours in the Mustang. ;D

Well done to Raimo on a flawless win. :)

Yeah that was epic fun guys....4 racers inside 2-3sec for 3-4 laps.

Had a great start, avoided the T1 incidents. It was a very close race. Think top 3 where inside 3-5sec for almost 40 laps. Sadly Ian got punted on lap 4 and was out of lead train. Then after Dario got a spin, I had the lead with Dave close behind still. Dario pitted then Dave, then I pitted and came out 1,5 sec in front of Dario who was 1,5 sec in front of Dave :-). Then we all catch Robin who now was leading the race. after 3-4 laps of insane close battle I manage to get a run on him and get by. Soon after Dario got by and Dave also after Robin went to pit. Darios tires started to end I think so I managed to inch slowly away and maintain a 5-10sec lead until end.

Very very fun racing and yes I send a pint to Robin also :-)

I had no pace :D

As simple as that. I kept making mistakes, that destroyed the tyres and i got slower, making even more mistakes, killing the tyres more, on and on :P
That sure made for an interesting race thou. I don't think there is a corner where i didn't pick a 1x up!
Well done Raimo!

Another what could have been race for me...

Great fun hounding Robin for the first 1/3 of the race... great fun.
Mike's little incident, wrecked my car ! :( One of those things Mike!  ;)
Thought I'd do an early stop and then not loose much time.... looked good for a while but then the tyres starting going off and I was struggling!
Add in Oily and I having our usual race nudge!  ;D then I was lucky to finish at all! ;D
Loved the combo, shame about the poor turnout  ???

Post by: GizMoTo on February 28, 2011, 10:33:43 AM +0000
well that turned out to be a big surprise  ;D

first off Qualifying, I was struggling to get a fast clean lap  could only get a time around my practice time then I went out to try and get one more lap in as I was in 6th or 7th  place on the grid at this point  I knew the time would be tight to get a fast lap in and it was part way round the chequered flag came out, the lap felt good so I kept my foot down and hoped it would let me finish the lap which it did .just as i was slowing down after the line it popped me into the pit and i saw the countdown for the grid ...............I honestly hadn't taken note of my qualy time  as I went right to garage to load my race set-up decided to run full tank first stint and part fill/4 tire pit-stop , anyway loaded the set-up and typed in "gla" then hit the join button only then did I realise just how good a lap that last lap was when i saw the line up in the "F3" gizmo I  was in 3rd place

as for the race everything seemed to fall right into place I saw in my mirrors the start of the turn 1 problems and thought  I best take advantage of that and try and stick with the leader Gary as I was in 2nd ....... I found my self  doing a half decent job at sticking with Gary he wasn't pulling away as fast I had expected, then came the first time of passing the Mustangs, and a few Corvettes that had been in the pits as usual I was very nervous and because of that I lost a bit of ground on Gary because I was taking to long being to careful,
then I went past a Corvette that had spun didn't realise right off that it Gary having a problem so I found myself in 1st  ;D

rest of the first stint went reasonable well apart form a full 360 spin due to a complete brain fade realising I was in first and had a chance to actually win the race  ::) come pit stop time i wasn't sure who or haw far 2nd place was behind me as all i had on F3 was blue mustangs, pit stop went well no drama or penalty back out on track I saw it was Simon in 2nd and he was only 11 seconds down  :o so I ran hard the rest of the race, every time i got over the 11 seconds I would end up catching a Mustang just at the wrong time   lose a bit of time and be back to 10/11 seconds in front ::) but I kept at it driving as smooth as i could trying to time catching the Mustangs at easy places to pass .this didn't happen all the time I remember one time I came onto a small group of 3 or 4 at the end of a lap and they where racing hard by looks of it going through the last 2 or 3 corners 2 cars wide, I just had to sit patiently  at what seemed a crawl round the last turns and just watch them race .boy them Mustangs looked unstable slipping and sliding  ;

all went well for the rest of the race Simon fell back a bit more over the last few laps so i was able to stop be a little less nervous for the last few laps and enjoy crossing the line in 1st place  ;D

have to say a big thanks to the Mustang drivers on the whole they did a super job at letting me pass without incident and that couldn't have been easy sometimes as they looked pretty darned hard to keep under control in some corners. talk about some drifting going on it did look good guys  ;D ;D ;D

and thanks to all who turned up and giving me my first win { and more than lightly last ;D ;D I ain't gona be that lucky again ;)}    here at .simracing.org

see ya next race

Yeah as Martin says, for some bizarre reason we just can't get enough of each other  :-*. Sorry mate, if I don't laugh I'll cry! I'm out of things to say about it  ???.

Was a strange race for me, in practice I'd been comfortably running 36's with a best of a mid 35, however that seemed to be impossible yesterday and even my better laps were only 37's.

Had a miracle escape at turn 1, hit Adam quite hard (unlucky mate - great pace in qually though!!) on the left corner as he span across me, that then fired me into Mike with the right but somehow my steering continued to point the right way!? Brief panic as I'm lying sideways across the track just hoping nobody's going to clout me again but thanks to some impressive evasive action there was no further incident!

Rejoined behind everyone but ended up stuck behind the Mustangs just having to be patient - I was surprised too around here, I'd mistakenly thought overtaking would be a doddle but it's those fast, single line corners that make it incredibly tricky. No fault of the Stangs but I lost soooo much time having to be patient. Aside from the twisties, I reckon Road Atlanta was easier to pass on with it's big stops.

Anyway with the shunt and traffic, by the end of lap 1 I was just coming on to the start/ finish as the leaders were on their way down Hangar Straight, but never one to give up hope in the beauty of the enduro format - a lot can happen over 90 mins!

Started trying to chase my practice pace in the next few laps and convinced I could find it i soon ended up giving it plenty through Bridge and then getting on the brakes for priory a millisecond before the car had settles and it caused me to slide slightly to the right. Briefly introduced myself to the gravel and duly took on board the warning that ragging the hell out of my Vette wasn't the way to finish. Other than the unfortunate dink with Martin around the half way mark and a couple of wide corner entries, the rest of the race was mistake free and just as I'd begun to think fourth was as good as it was going to get, Christmas comes early and I see Gazza's wounded pink (sorry purple  ;)) Vette on the exit of Becketts.

Could tell he was struggling either with damage or tyres but I have to say mate - that was a pretty good pace for a bent car still! Kept the pressure up until the end. Knowing nothing was certain with the Stangs in the mix, I knew I had to make my lapping really decisive to eek out some kind of buffer (which also happens to be really good fun) hoping he wouldn't get quite as a nice a run and with a pinch of good fortune it worked out well.

Really pleased with the 90 mins - I'm finding these a lot less gruelling these days and the Vette's balance is where I want it in terms of handling which gives that all important confidence in traffic.

Anyway the whole thing was made even sweeter seeing Raimo pick up the win with Dario second for a delicious green one-two  ;D

Wd Ian and Simon on fine drives and unlucky Gazza - that qually pace was quite something!

Thanks to the Stang guys, great driving all round and to Adam for organising another cracking race, hope to see a few more next time out - not sure if the Rugby and Carling Cup Final had anything do with the lower numbers this week perhaps?

Hope to see some of you at Sebring on Sunday for some strictly Stang action at the opening round of the RoC season :)

Gutted I had to miss this one :( looks like my practice times would of finally put me at the sharp end of the grid. Maybe next time.

My best race of the season so far, no reset, and no accidents and it helped the Team move back in to 4th in the championship.

I seemed to think moving to a new wheel and pedal would make me faster, but I still seem to be a fair bit off the pace.   Was hoping to try and keep up with Pete, but race pace was to slow.

Still a fun race, and always plenty of cars overtaking me so had to try and keep focused.
