Title: GT fun Race Brands Hatch March 25th
Post by: EvilClive on March 23, 2011, 08:20:22 PM +0000
For the next round in our GT Fun series we visit the classic British track that is Brands Hatch

Brands Hatch            30 LAPS     Grid START     PITSTOPS         March 25th

To prevent everyone taking one of the "power" cars for each and every race, drivers will have a total budget of 85 tokens to cover all 5 races AND must take a different car for each race.
If you miss a race, then 17 tokens will be deducted from your budget, so that no-one can forfeit a single race and run faster cars in the other 4. Smart thinking for a simple moderator eh???  Roll Eyes

You do not need to register your cars before each race, you can keep your selection a secret, but anyone exceeding their budget over the 5 races will have their best result cancelled.

Once again a single Shift-R regardless of fault.

If you have an incident within the pitlane ( in races where we are using pitstops), then you will have to complete your pitstop, leave the pits and perform the SnG on another lap.

Points will be as before   24-22-20-18-17-16-15-14-13-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3 and points are only awarded if you see the chequered flag.

THE CAR TOKEN VALUES HAVE BEEN REVISED

Having just had a go at the BREASTS races tonight, which were fun, but with a joystick (I have broken leg in case people are wondering why I cant use wheel) I'll skip this.  While I can put in a semi respectable time in the 1:39's I don't feel steady enough to compete with full grid.

I'll just stick to fun races for now and the BREASTS races too, just to keep my GPL fix going for another four weeks, then hopefully can get back to using pedals.

Love this track, but I don't want to risk it.

Have fun guys.

You have one leg intact, can't you use that for working with the pedals?

Hmmm - if I didn't drive on the basis of only being able to manage 1:39's I'd never drive at all ;)

Get well soon mate.

No sadly not, its my right leg that I have broken, and trying to do throttle control with my left foot is no better than trying to use a joystick (I tried briefly).  Also, how my desk is set up, I would have to keep my right leg bent and at an awkward angle for the duration of the race, which really isn't comfortable; I don't want to risk causing further damage just to take part in PC racing.  Its only a few weeks.  I would hate to end up influencing a race outcome by not being able to control the car properly.

Actually using a stick for a few races might teach me something.  I have had to use some very different techniques (no gas available while braking) to get around and have found I can actually carry much more speed through a turn than I thought, providing I set it up properly for a turn (something you have said frequently, I've just never been able to do it properly lol), so it might, in the long run, actually help!

Cheers Paul.  Its not the laptimes, I was quite surprised I could get that far.   The Porsche helped along with the fact I love the track.  I just dont want to risk someone elses race, particularly on corner entry where I am a bit random on lines and frequently end up over correcting and spinning.

I was hoping you would have been along at BREASTS last night as I thought we could have had a good bit of close racing.  As it was I ended up running ahead of a few established names anyway  ;D.  Maybe catch you at another fun race sometime, we could practice some close racing for you to get used to the blinding speed you're going to be getting over the next season :)

@Ronnie - Thanks.  Really I just wanted to see what Valentino was going through last year ;)

Well, I've used joystick for so many years in the past and actually still can't beat some of my Lotus times achieved back then. It's definitely easier to control RFB with your wrist than with a foot, but it does take time to develop the habits and precision. As an advice, try moving the linearity slider close to maximum non-linear setting, i.e. 80-90% to the right. It helps a lot with controlling the car in a smoother manner. Also, if you're having problems under braking, try using more clutches; that has always helped me back then, especially at high speed. I used to remove the springs of my joystick completely so it has no resistance whatsoever, it made it easier to control the car, although you need to develop a sensitive touch. Ah and yeah, use higher steering ratio, such as 15:1, with the steering hack turned on for hairpins. Use a more open diff on the coast side to help for turning in as a compensation for the above settings. As for braking bias, I was able to go down to 52bb for the 67 Lotus eventually, but was using 54-55 initially. It just takes time and practice. :)

Well that was fun until I cocked up my second pit stop.  The Ferrari was a joy to drive round Brands but with such a long pit stop time it was going to be tough to stay at the front.

Got a decent start and was holding a comfortable 3rd for a while.  I caught the grass at South Bank and ended up spinning and got in the way of someone (Goran I think - sorry M8) so that dropped me back quite a bit.  Later on after taking my first 56 second pit stop, I was following H (who had just lapped me) and I crashed into Clear Ways so I decided to take my second stop.  Came across a Porsche taking a pit stop just in front of my box so I didn't get lined up in front of my pit board properly.  Should have realised that and crept forward but didn't so got discoed.  Never mind still enjoyed the pit stop format, although I was passing people after pitting the first time  there was no way to tell if I was pulling away fast enough to stay ahead after my second stop.  Makes the racing more interesting IMO  ;D - it isn't over until the final lap :fencing:

:o whats that about ? .in front of my pitboard properly  ?? .. I thought its a must to stop as early as could be done inside pitlane , to make all those 1000times little moves , just to tell GPL you are  still racing ....

(which by the way I forgott this time , thatswhy I was kicked out )

well to be honest , I am unsure if I can stand that  pitstop-crap .
I do very like the idea of pitstops in a race . But as long pitstops dont been accept in a clean way by GPL itself .. as well dont serve a way for fuel load strategy , for me it turns out as a no go .

Pitty that those moders did stay so realistic to  67 sportcars , cause it seems that of about 60% of those cars arent compatitive .

well , I think Porsche-Cup would be the best way to extract fun and thrill outa that mod .

DONT FORGETT TO WATCH F1 TOMORROW !!!!  :D

There is one place where you can make a Pit Stop and stay stationary as long as you like without being discoed.  That place is exactly in your own Pit Box.  You know when you are in your Pit Box because the pit board is withdrawn.  But don't go too far past the board (no more than half a car length) otherwise you will have moved out of your pit box and into the next one.

good track

Shame I couldn't make this one. A couple of days ago, my television-turned-computer screen made a loud popping sound which I'm assuming is a blown capacitor. Either way, now the tele makes an awful droning noise whenever I turn it on and the screen constantly flashes into differing shades of blue  ::). Seems I'm out for the rest of the off season as my laptop simply can't cope with the sports car mod. Hopefully I can grab my old screen during the Easter holidays and resume racing as normal for S21  :).

That's unlucky Samb :(
For me this race was a struggle. I've had a very busy week and thus only got about 20 minutes practise. Long enough to set the gear ratios and cambers and thats about it. Everything else on the car was a guessed at setup and it really didn't work at all. I was all over the place and eventually crashed out at Hawthorn bend.
I really must learn to make time for pre-event practising!

Pleased I popped along.  As I posted previously I wasn't going to race, but being off work I had the chance to try a few more laps and got a little more steady with the joystick so thought I'd give it a go if no one objected in chat.

It was a fun race, albeit some 2 seconds a lap off my wheel times.  The stick required a very sensitive touch and occasionally I failed with that resulting in quite a few spins.  One unfortunately resulted in being sat on the racing line just over the brow of Paddock Hill Bend where Juha had no option but to run straight into my stricken car; we were fortunate that neither car seem to take any damage, so I'm thankful for that.  Sorry Juha.

Shame so many dropped out in the end.  I was pleased to manage a finish.

I love Brands where the Porsche excels, the only car I could really get away with at the moment with the stick, need more practice with some other cars if I want to try Adelaide.  Hope we get the chance to try Brands again with GTs when I'm back with my wheel.

Congratulations to H and the podium; well driven guys.  A big well done to all finishers, indeed all that took part.

Cheers.

I do not know, no explanation so far. The only thing I can think of is that I discussed the penalty system from a critical view and comparing with other leagues.

But today, after the initial chock, I think maybe it`s for the best. After all I will have more time for practicing and improving my racing. The only thing I really miss about being a mod is to choose the tracks we race on. But I am sure my replacement will do a good job.

My race was rather compromised by the event of the day, see above, so I was not well prepared and a bit shaky so the result was not good. I managed to put the car on the front row, because of the tight grid, which I do not mind, but did a rather poor start, was a bit too cautious, so I lost one place. But I was running in 4Th behind Phil, and no problem about the spin Phil, the pace was ok but then I started thinking of the pitstops. I decided to take two pistops for 53 sec and after the first one I found out that it was not a good strategy. The time to get into and out of the pits and to find the rhythm after was way too much compared with making just one pitstop for 113 sec. So I ended the race in p8 my worst so far.

Congrats to Hristo and the podium and WD Steve.

Yes I think that is probably the best strategy.  If I had done one long stop I wouldn't have made a mess of my second one :taz:

Maybe Fulvio can upload the server replay for us, as he has access to the T7 server??
I have access to server replay of course, but how and where can I upload it to usual UKGPL replay storage?
Ciao
Sorry only just spotted this. Bunged the replay in the usual place (http://www.jamesonline.net/ukgpl/ (http://www.jamesonline.net/ukgpl/))

After checking the replay the revised standings are as below. Hristo forgot to take his Pit stop and ronnie did perform a StopnGo for his Shift R on lap 2, but did not take the 17 second handicap stop for the Mirage.
6  25 Ronnie Peterson             Mirage   ITA     DQ  no pitstop  tut tut!!!

You do me a disservice Clive. After completing my stop and go for my single shift-r at the end of lap 2, I left the pits came back round and did my 17s single pitstop at the end of the following lap. Do I understand that I could have saved myself the trouble of coming in twice?

Sorry if I made a mistake about your stop. I will check again this evening and make the necessary adjustments to points etc.

I watched the race at 16x normal speed and had to do it for each car. After about 45 minutes of that anyone's eyesight is suspect!!

As regards SnG's after a Shift-R, those must be taken as a totally separate trip into the pits.

At least there are no pitstops at Adelaide and probably just as well, because the pit exit is blind and directly on to the racing line into T1!!! Brands is not quite as bad if drivers are sensible, but there were a couple of "racing incidents" at Paddock Hill bend as cars emerged from their pit stops.
