Title: UKGPL Season 21 (2011) GT - Efexx - May 15
Post by: EvilClive on May 08, 2011, 06:09:17 PM +0100
After the sweeping undulations of St Jovite we travel to Belgium and a different challange for these GT cars and their drivers.

Because this circuit has a short lap length there will inevitably be a lot of cars being lapped by the leaders. After a couple of incidents in the St Jovite race where the poor rear view in these cars caused problems, please be aware that the car in front maybe cannot see you and does not know you are there.

Race List = IGOR
Server = UKGPL_T7_2
IP address = 62.149.202.168
Race date = Sunday 15-05-2011
Time = 21:00 UK time (21:00 GMT)
Track = Effex http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NS2MAW4S
Race length = approx 50 minutes (45 laps)
Variant = GT mod
Damage Model = Intermediate (see rules below re resets)
Qualifying time = 35 minutes. Don't start until 30 mins left on clock to allow everyone to join.
Password: see above (#post_event_password)
Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=307;theme=6)

There will be rolling starts for all races with full moderation of both the warm-up and first lap.

Guidelines for rolling starts...

The car on pole will lead off the grid and maintain a steady pace for the 1st lap around 175kph
All drivers should form up in single file behind him leaving 3-4 car lengths between each car.
There is NO OVERTAKING on the 1st lap until the exit of the last corner.
It is the reponsibility of the lead car to ensure that all drivers are with him as he approaches the final corner.
Racing and overtaking begin AFTER the exit of the last corner, so you may overtake between the exit of the last corner and the S/F line.

Any driver who loses his position on the rolling lap, by going off, blowing his engine or through contact with another car ( regardless of fault) must rejoin at the back of the field.
Incidents on the rolling lap ( Lap 1) will be fully modded and anyone found to have caused another competitor to lose position through bad driving will be penalised appropriately.
Also, please make sure that you know which car you should be following on the rolling lap, so that you do NOT get out of position.

The teams have been chosen and the cars are polished and ready to go.

TEAMS

RED TEAM          HRISTO ITCHOV,  Evilclive, Paul Badblood
 Chap 2F / Mirage / Porsche

BLUE TEAM        SAMB, Fulvio, Happy Al
Chap 2F/ Lola/ Mirage

GREEN TEAM     ZACHARIA BLITO, Phil Thornton, Axel Cookie
Chapp 2F/ Ferrari P4 / Mirage

ORANGE TEAM        NIGEL SMITH, Tim FMG,Dave RAndall
Ferrari P4 / Chapp 2D / Ford GT MK2.

GREY TEAM     Captained by Tim Vosblod who is looking after the part time drivers who cannot be sure to attend every race.

The cars for the Grey team for this season will be
Chapperal 2D
Mirage
Ford GT40 MK1

All drivers must drive all 3 team cars at least 3 times. At the end of the 10 race championship any TEAM found to be in breach of this rule will have its BEST TEAM points result of the season cancelled. Each driver will drop his worst 2 results, in line with the other championships, this gets over the problem of missed races and 2 man teams looking for a sub at the last minute.

The events will be run on Intermediate damage and allow ONE Shift-R with a compulsory 10 second pit stop regardless of fault. (This means 10 seconds in your pitbox without moving). Any driver who fails to take a 10 second stop within 1 lap after a Shift-R, will be disqualified from the results. For this division the full moderation of lap one now applying across all divisions will include both the warm up lap and lap one proper.

Please check the Season 21 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=301&theme=6) regarding rules and the GT Team Challenge pages (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=307&theme=6) in particular.

Thanks Tim, but you missed the obvious mistake...I was testing you. ;) ;D

I still had St Jovite as the track!!....oops!

Is the Track database down? as I cannot seem to connect to it. I was going to check if Effex was available from there again.

I'm afraid you can't! I would accept the Mirage for this one again, but if you and Evil prefer it over the Porsche and 2F, let me know on PM and we'll sort it out. If not, figure out between yourselves who takes what.

My apologies - I must! I have a longstanding family engagement on Sunday night. This is the one that I thought would make me miss St-Jovite - got the date wrong!

Given your scorching pace in the Mirage I would stick to that. Might be a good race to 'get rid' of a Porsche drive for you quick boys.

Ah, OK, Paul, you're excused then - hope your family appreciates the sacrifice you must do for them!  ;D

So are we allowed to seek temporary single-race replacements in these series? And do they have to be signed on the team or something? In case we can, anyone willing to step in for Paul for just this one race?

Did 2 9:02's last year on 6" wide Uniroyal-decidedly-not-sport-tyres which were melting by about the 2/3d's point as it wasn't raining :o
This year I have some 8" wide Falken's on my lightweight Ray's wheels  8) - This combo is actually lighter than the 6" road wheel/tyre combo aswell as grippier so I'm aiming for at least 10 secs off if I manage a clear lap ;D

Makes sense now you've edited it maddog ;D

What I mean Paul is that my wheels (And therefore tyres aswell) will be 2" wider on each wheel = bigger contact patch = moar gripz = higher corner speeds :thumbup1:
Also, thanks to the bigger Rays wheels actually weighing less! than the smaller wheels, I have less rotating mass which is also a big bonus  ;D

Oh, and there are rumours that the club van will be coming with us, I've already started making enquiries about taking it around the Nordschlief should that be true :ninja:

Err - I was kidding Tim although I'm not familiar with 'Rays'. I do get the point about the bigger wheels. That is why driving a lorry is so much easier - big wheels and five axles = 10 wheels with large diameter - HUGE amounts of grip ;) (I'm still kidding)

Well that's typical. My internet conked out on the first lap  :censored:. If only it happened a few minutes earlier. At the end of the pace lap, people were disappearing and suddenly GPL shouts 'Error on network device' or something new. Was hoping that the server had an issue but alas it was just me. Shame that as I was really looking forward to the race at Efexx.

Onto the next one......

Not expecting to race here as we already had a full compliment. Unfortunately Steve had to drop out at short notice. Track I don't know, car I don't know and no practice.
But just turning up would plonk in a few grey points over others who might be missing and, as I was pencilled in to start the server anyway, just join, stay at the back and keep out of the way.
I did that, didn't get far, but still put something down for the Growling Greys.

Really need to get back into some practicing again as my current lack of form is highlighting my lack of wheel time.

"good" race for me ,as Ford Mk1 wasnt the best choice for this track, did some practise before the race and was quite happy with the car handling. In the race i did 2 mistakes one after i see Cookies car close ahead of me, and one when 5 laps to go, same time Fulvio passed me and i was dropped from 4th place to5th.

not a best day for Grey team as Geoff and Vosblod disconnected   :-\

I saw replay and I have to apologize for hitting you Cookie while you were sideway. I saw you start for the outside but then you recollected when I had already gone for the inside.
My race was ruined when I steered to the pitwall following close Clive on the s/f straight, rebounded with a nice tounneau over the haybales.
Did the s&g of 10 sec. and restarted just ahead of FMG that was my shadow for almost all the rest of the race. In the end passed Juha playing in the haybales at his time.
I think Juha and me would be promoted 3rd and 4th ;)
Sorry for the server problems, next time will be a backup ready just in case.
Ciao

A great result for the Red Team and an inspired choice of cars  ;D

Hristo had already decided that he wanted to use the Mirage, but Paul was unable to join in so that left me with a choice of cars. I had done some practice runs and knew I could get the 2F into the 1:03's on race fuel and had tried the Porsche and found it to be approx 1.5secs slower, but easier to handle.

A quick team talk before the race decided things and I took the Porker so that I would have the option of the 2F at a faster circuit later in the series.
The short qually meant that I never quite got a good lap with a tow, but still managed a respectable 5th or 6th on the grid.
The lack of a tow in qually proved a problem in the first few laps tucked in behind a line of muscle cars, because my red needle was banging against the stop as we passed the end of the pits. It soon became apparent that I could keep up with the leaders by exploiting the road holding of the Porsche even though I would lose ground at the end of each straight.
One by one the leaders threw themselves off the road or made small mistakes and I climbed to 3rd place, Axel went off but the top speed of that "F almost blasted me off the track as he recovered and went by!!!. I tried to hold on to his slipstream, but feared that the excess revs would kill my engine, so  backed off and allowed Axel to pull away.
Fulvio was a threat until he clipped the end of the pit wall and vanished from my mirrors. Hristo had pulled away at the front with Cookie in pursuit, I was in a safe 3rd with Juha a good way behind and not closing at about half distance.

"If Axel makes a mistake I will be back on his tail and if he needs a pit stop I will have 2nd place" I thought . But as the laps counted down Cookie refused to make a big enough mistake for me to catch him and with 3 laps to go I had settled for 3rd place.
Then I saw a 2F on the grass just before the S/F line and a quick check with prib confirmed that it was Axel!! I was 2nd!! with 2 laps to go!!  woohoo. ;D

We have some reference to it here; https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/sporting (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/sporting)
The policy is to reinstate undeserved DQ's due to network problems or the server losing them. If it is a 'proper' DQ then you should see black flags and pit in and wait till you can go, you are then back in the running.
If you don't pit GPL will DQ you and, unless there is a very good reason to reinstate someone, that should stand.

Obviously I've not looked at this particular issue but that is the UKGPL stance. Going the wrong way does tend to pick up a black flag although we have checkpoints switched off so GPL is normally pretty liberal.

Going backwards always picks up a black flag, regardless of checkpoints. You can avoid it by stopping frequently for 1-2 seconds as you go backwards, each 50 meters or so.

This was a very tough race and I didn't expect to be leading from the start, but a good lap in Qualifying and apparently not so good (or clean) lap by Axel meant that I started at the front. Sam was impressive in his Mirage, but sadly suffered a disco again, so I was left to fend off very fast going Fulvio early on. I was a bit cautious and letting the oil temp go up over the first couple of laps, but that allowed Fulvio to keep within a striking distance and so I had to keep checking my mirror all the time. Lucky for me he went off at the 90 degree left hander (T3?) and that gave me some breathing space which I used to push more and open up a gap.

Eventually Axel made his way up to 2nd and the gap cemented at about 5 seconds, and it took some 6-7 laps until I could extend that to 6 seconds, but then it dropped to 5 again, lol. Axel was obviously very quick and I knew I cannot allow any mistakes.

Backmarkers were quite decent and despite the bad mirrors, they were aware enough to ease off as soon as I went side by side with them, but with these wide cars it was still a bit of a close call sometimes, especially going under braking into T2. Axel must've had some problems because the gap extended twice - first to 13 seconds (I think) and then to over 20 seconds. That was really important because of what happened next.

Approaching two cars towards the s/f line, I was aware that one of them was a backmarker for both myself and the other car (or so it appeared by looking at their speed difference), so I had quite a scare when the double-backmarker lost it and spun into the pit wall, putting up a lot of dust in the air. That distracted me enough to miss my turn-in point for T1 and go wide straight into the haybales. The car flipped into the air, spun around a couple of times and landed hard onto its wheels, but at least it didn't land onto its roof! I continued as quick as I can, but lost some 13 seconds as a result of that off as Cookie was shown 8 seconds behind on the next lap.

He kept pressing hard and the gap dropped to 7, but then extended to 11 as he probably had another problem. My second off came as I closed up on a backmarker towards T2 (or maybe it's T3? well, I mean the slow right) and he sort of zig-zagged around which unsettled by direction under braking and I went a bit too quick into the corner on the inside and off into the grass. As I recovered and closed up again on the same backmarker, he was barely controlling the car, losing the direction even on the straights - a prime example of severe over-driving.

Apart from those two problems I had a very consistent race. The car handled the same throughout the whole race and the lap times were very close regardless of fuel load. The left rear tire was a bit hot in the middle, but not enough to unsettle the car too much. I managed to achieve a very good rhythm and despite not being the fastest car on the track, it was enough to win the race.

Grats to Evil for taking 2nd!

P.S. A question - if someone misses the race, can they still take one of the chassis 4 times (10 races - 3+3+4)?

minor problems with right front suspension
didn't handicap me much but I had to be careful at braking.

Could get to 2nd place and kept it until 2 laps to go, when I overdid the hairpin2.
Crashed and had to wait until all the followers had passed to make a s+r.
Luckily was short way to box.
I made a  big error when I shortly stopped in my pit, didn't remember I have to wait 10 sec....

So I expect beeing penalized for this by some seconds  ::)

All in all great race, but I am not yet a cool and experienced GPL racedriver...

Axel

Good result for team Green though Axel, with both Phil and I picking up decent points finishes too...

Hristo.. is that "zig-zagging" backmarker me by anychance... I was finding the white Ferrari to be a handfull! I must say though when you tried to lap me at the first hard right I saw your intention and thought to myself "hes never gonna try it from back there! he cant do!  he is you know.. hes having a go!" and thus I stayed wide and had a chukle as the mighty H went grass tracking! I did try very hard to keep out of peoples way when they were lapping me but I am finding the GT's quite tough to control.

Hehe  ;D but you really seemed as over-driving it. If you ease off a bit and try to be smoother, it would work a lot better. These heavy cars really reward smoothness because they carry so much momentum.

You all need to look at the replay. Nigel was literally 'over the wall' - he couldn't get back to the track. He took a little tour of the (imaginary) Belgian countryside and went the wrong way. He was nowhere near the track.

Not sure if he disco'ed himself or GPL did it. Not clear from the replay because he pitted and I can't see his Pit Board.

Definitely one for the record books.

Just watched the replay and I cannot see how we can penalise Nigel.

He may have travelled in the wrong direction. but there was never any chance of him interfering with the race from where he was stranded. In fact I think he might deserve a medal for even getting where he did!!

Eventually he is forced to perform a Shift-R just to get the right side of the wall and back onto the circuit..and he took the correct stop in the pits ;).

To apply a penalty in this case would be grossly unfair IMHO, as he had no choice but to look for a way back onto the track..even though it appears there is not one!!! and he certainly did not gain any advantage.

That sounds like a very good reason to reinstate him to me. Seem to remember being stuck behind an armco once myself and took ages to get out LOL

Off topic - I wanted to try and see how the GT mod looks with the 60 fps patch, but as soon as I click the green button to go past the main menu in GPL, it crashes back to desktop with an error. Any ideas? 60 fps patch works OK with the other mods.

I have tried the 60 fps patch a few times H and it has worked OK off line for me, never tried it on-line though.

Hi Hristo

The 60fps works fine with GTs when you take the 60fpsV1 version.
The 60fpsV2 versions work with the other mods.

The german FunLiga GT races are in 60fps without any problems.
IMHO its way better than the old 36fps, just try it...

Not much to talk about for my race.

My Qually didn't go too well as I never got a clear lap. My best time wouldn't of got me any further up the grid so I gave up and settled for my grid slot, which was 9th.

During the race I was just steady, I tried to get heat into my tryes, and settle down. It was working OK but I was having problems with understeer. I was doing quite well in 7th, but the quick recovering FMG caught me up, and got past quickly. I didn't defend too much as he was clearly much quicker. I had 1 lap where I threw it off the road twice, which let Jason get on my tail. Me and Jason had a little battle but it ended when I made a small mistake, he got past and I tried to put some pressure on him. It stopped when I made yet another mistake and spun.

The last few laps I calmed down and cruised to the flag.

Happy with 9th, which is where I started. I feel like I wasted the 2F, as my team mates are much quicker than me but I suppose that I have to drive it at some point. I will try to do better at the next race.

Hey, nice work!  Some late night entertainment worth watching.  Wasn't there to recognise all the drivers, but noticed the detail level down in some shots.  If your system can handle it, you should go max detail, and all effects on in the sequel.  But off before another race! :)

Max details, but some early footage was taken with the slider down to the left a bit, but just a few and only seemed to affect how the side of the cars looked. Think it's only noticeable on Tim's car as it passes soon after the beginning.

Not so sure Fulvio - Here's the end of the first saloon car race at Combe a few weeks back ;)

The crash was one post along from where I was marshalling, but it's the final corner maneuvers I think will interest you most  ;D

Yes, it says it's blocked in Germany because of copyrights for the song. I tried uploading it to Facebook but it's been completely removed from there for the same reasons. Pathetic... I'll try uploading to another video site.

The facebook restrictions must also be country based as I have also linked to H`s Youtube video and it all works fine for me (uk)

That's a link to Youtube though. What I meant was Facebook's own restrictions when you upload there (you know, from where you upload photos you can also upload videos). Anyway, I've uploaded it to Vimeo and waiting for it to convert.

Lol, I don't agree, if you hit that haybale or drifted to the right a moment earlier, and if Evil didn't react to give you room, you'd have made contact, but at least it made good footage for the video!  ;D
