Title: UKGPL Season 21 (2011) GT Teams Round 4 - Silverstone (GP 1952-73) - Jun 12
Post by: BadBlood on June 07, 2011, 09:53:45 AM +0100
So from Kent to Northamptonshire and another track we know well. Silverstone. This track was the first to hold a modern F1 GP as we know it and has always been regarded as one of the fastest venues on the calendar. A converted airfield, you can still see the runways (although you can't drive down them, I know, I've tried). With the disparity in power available, an exciting race is in prospect.

You all know the difficulties with the poor rear view in these cars so please be aware that the car in front maybe cannot see you and does not know you are there. Particularly on the first racing lap!

Race List = IGOR
Server = UKGPL_T7_2
IP address = 62.149.202.168
Race date = Sunday June 12th
Time = 21:00 UK time (21:00 GMT)
Track = Silverstone (GP 1952-73) [Papy original track]
Race length = approx 50 minutes (34 laps)
Variant = GT mod
Damage Model = Intermediate (see rules below re resets)
Qualifying time = 35 minutes. Don't start until 30 mins left on clock to allow everyone to join.
Password: see above
Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=307;theme=6)

There will be rolling starts for all races with full moderation of both the warm-up and first lap.

Guidelines for rolling starts...

The car on pole will lead off the grid and maintain a steady pace for the 1st lap around 175kph
All drivers should form up in single file behind him leaving 3-4 car lengths between each car.
There is NO OVERTAKING on the 1st lap until the exit of the last corner.
It is the reponsibility of the lead car to ensure that all drivers are with him as he approaches the final corner.
Racing and overtaking begin AFTER the exit of the last corner, so you may overtake between the exit of the last corner and the S/F line.

Any driver who loses his position on the rolling lap, by going off, blowing his engine or through contact with another car ( regardless of fault) must rejoin at the back of the field.
Incidents on the rolling lap ( Lap 1) will be fully modded and anyone found to have caused another competitor to lose position through bad driving will be penalised appropriately.
Also, please make sure that you know which car you should be following on the rolling lap, so that you do NOT get out of position.

The teams have been chosen and the cars are polished and ready to go.

TEAMS

RED TEAM          HRISTO ITCHOV,  Evilclive, Paul Badblood
 Chap 2F / Mirage / Porsche

BLUE TEAM        SAMB, Fulvio, Happy Al
Chap 2F/ Lola/ Mirage

GREEN TEAM     ZACHARIA BLITO, Phil Thornton, Axel Cookie
Chapp 2F/ Ferrari P4 / Mirage

ORANGE TEAM        NIGEL SMITH, Tim FMG,Dave RAndall
Ferrari P4 / Chapp 2D / Ford GT MK2.

GREY TEAM     Captained by Tim Vosblod who is looking after the part time drivers who cannot be sure to attend every race.

The cars for the Grey team for this season will be
Chapperal 2D
Mirage
Ford GT40 MK1

a NEW pink team HAS BEEN FORMED TO ACCOMODATE A FEW MORE OF THE TEMPORARY DRIVERS IN THIS SERIES

The Cars for the Pink Team are
Ferrari
Mk2 GT40
Porsche

All drivers must drive all 3 team cars at least 3 times. At the end of the 10 race championship any TEAM found to be in breach of this rule will have its BEST TEAM points result of the season cancelled. Each driver will drop his worst 2 results, in line with the other championships, this gets over the problem of missed races and 2 man teams looking for a sub at the last minute.

The events will be run on Intermediate damage and allow ONE Shift-R with a compulsory 10 second pit stop regardless of fault. (This means 10 seconds in your pitbox without moving). Any driver who fails to take a 10 second stop within 1 lap after a Shift-R, will be disqualified from the results. For this division the full moderation of lap one now applying across all divisions will include both the warm up lap and lap one proper.

Please check the Season 21 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=301&theme=6) regarding rules and the GT Team Challenge pages (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=307&theme=6) in particular.

Interesting race. Hadn't planned to make it as the greys were a full house but got home early so went into chat. Clive hastilly pulled the pink team out of the bag so took the Fezza.
Luckily I remembered we had a no overtaking warm-up lap but found it tricky, seemed to be a lot more stop start compared to a standing kick-off. One minute we were crawling down a straight in third then it was full throttle.

Anyway a few laps in something blue went to pass me unexpectedly last minute into a corner so tried to stay as far out as possible to be safe but it was not to be. A reset and remembered I had to take a 10 second stopper in the pits.
Would you believe it, having done umpteen laps of Silverstone in the past, I turned in at the wrong spot and found myself on the wrong side of an armco. That was it really, no poiint continuing a race on the inside of the airfield.

Was fun while it lasted...

Apologies Tim ..that was me  :-\  You kind of caught me out on the brakes, so I went inside to avoid any contact...looks like it did not work. Tried to keep it tight but not entirely sure that I did.  Have not looked at replay to see if it was my fault, but I am expecting the moderator to come down hard on me :'(

LOL Clive - you also scared the hell outta me when you passed me late in the race.. thanks to my crappy Mirrors I actually thought you were trying the outside line... I really had no idea where you where, hence my " Tippy toes" round the middle line at woodcote.... I lost a little time and a place to my Team-mate Uncle Phil but otherwise no harm done...
On the whole, that was an excellent (and clean!) race... I had some great battles all race long ( was really sorry to see Alistairs Lola break it engine).. I was lapped a few times (remembering Hristo's request for backmarkers not to make sudden moves when being lapped) and lapped a few others (praying they too listened to H's request)..
All in all, a great race..
Well done to everyone... 14 finishers is quite an achievement I think!

Ahh it must be my Mr Pink vs Mr Red complex ;D
Not sure I can report our Senior Consultant as there is no one left to appeal to ;)

I'm sure it will get fixed by them upstairs, they are probably still finding the Pinky team :D

Clark-Hill - Pink and fluffy. What's the difference?

All fixed.

REALLY enjoyed this race. Probably my best ever, not for blinding speed, my race laps were the slowest of anyone but for consistency and getting to have a race. At first I was holding Geoff off and then I made a mistake at the second last (Abbey) and he zoomed past with the extra Ford horsepower down to Woodcote. I followed and a couple of laps later he span at Stowe. I thought I could avoid him by going tight but then his car drifted inwards and I couldn't adjust. So I just smacked him hard head on. Sorry mate.

On I went and Geoff and Sky were hunting me down until I too made a mistake at Stowe and brushed the wall, initially thought I had got away with it but lost it again and got hit... hard. Not sure if it was Geoff or Sky. I think the luckless Aussie lost out again and I was left pursuing Sky. We had a good battle with a few mistakes complicated by the people unkindly lapping us. H and Tim gave me a bit of a fright and I brushed Tim at one point after letting Juha through. Sorry about that. He was ok though.

Got Sky after lots of laps chasing and gaining time after Stowe and losing it before... but he finally made one mistake too many and the position was mine. I was knackered though and I started getting very conservative. Too conservative. Lost it at Stowe again and just about got away with my place intact. Sky must have had some problem because he disappeared and I coasted home. Got a bit of a new fright when Geoff popped up behind me in Prib but I had seven hundred yards and only two laps. Even I can manage that.

Great fun. Thanks to Geoff and Sky for some fun racing and sorry about the biffs Geoff. Have to let Clive sort those out :(

I had fun this race, I think this is turning into a great fun series.

My race was pretty normal for me. In qualifying I didn’t get any were near my best times in practice, but I didn’t push because the cars in front were so far ahead it wouldn’t of put me in a better grid slot.

The race was going well for me, I was driving within myself and not making too many mistakes. I was holding a few cars off, and was quite happy. I knew that the Lola was a bit more delicate than the Mirage that I drove last season, so I was taking care of it. It didn’t help me as I did blow the engine. This released Jason, Phil and Steve.

I wasn’t really fast enough to catch them back up, but I noticed that Steve did a pit stop at the same time I did. I left the pits just in front of Steve, and tried to settle back into a rhythm, which I found hard going, on full tanks and cold tyres, at the same time trying to be extra careful with down shifts. On the next lap I was hit by H going into the first corner. I’m sorry for this, I was being very cautious and I didn’t see him. I hope I didn’t impact on your race too much.

After that, Steve was quite a way in front, I tried to put some pressure on him, as I was marginally faster, but couldn’t get close enough. So with 5 laps to go I settled in to finish.

That was my race, on balance I think it was better than I expected, I was able to run with people who are normally faster than me, I didn’t make too many mistakes and I enjoyed the race. Sorry again to H, looking back on the incident I was probable being too cautious.

Yes, this could have been a great fun...

My Quali was ok as I was the first non Chap.

Start was really funny as Clive seems to have forgotten the rolling start procedure  ;D ;D ;D

For about 9 laps in position 4, I could do some pressure to SamB in his truck till my engine exploded :o
S+R -> S+G+10
Came back behind Al and tried an early overtaking with still too cold tyres in Stowe, went wide and kissed the wall.
Rejoing behind my teammates Jason and Phil my engine had no longer the full power.
Some laps later at Woodcote I was too far inside and spinned.
Steve following me had no chance to avoid collision with me, aired me landing on my roof. ESC+return!
Sorry Steve!

Ah so that was Clive that drove into my car's rump at the start! Certainly gave me a shock. Good job the Chapp I was driving weighs about four tons  :D.

Good race overall. Was a little disappointed that H pipped me on the last lap but I'm still reasonably satisfied with 4th. My pace was consistent, just consistently slow  ;D. I've always found Silverstone a tricky track to go around quickly. I've never been able to do one banzai lap and just have to keep circulating to get a good qualifying time. The race was the same story, lapping, at what felt like a reasonable pace, but still a second a lap slower than Tim and Juha up front.

Towards the end, H was catching me at a rate of knots and I was powerless to respond. When he passed me I decided to experiment for the rest of the lap and brake when H braked  ::). Was very surprised how late it was actually possible to brake and still meet the corner. Still, H took a deserved 3rd, me in a steady 4th. Maybe I need to be more brave at the next one.

On the next lap I was hit by H going into the first corner. I’m sorry for this, I was being very cautious and I didn’t see him. I hope I didn’t impact on your race too much.

No, I was not affected, only you. I'm sorry as well, but you braked so much earlier and I wasn't close enough to even expect that we're in risk of contact, let alone move aside to try and overtake into T1.

My race was rather crazy. I spun at the start after putting my right front tire onto the pitlane entry area and the car snapped under throttle, then it parked exactly into the pitwall edge. I continued and it appeared there was no damage to the car, or at least nothing noticeable.

I had another issue soon after while going on the outside of Jason. It looked like a warp contact, but from my end he lost the rear a bit and the contact sent me up the banking. Funnily, the car rolled over at a very slow speed and back on its wheels, but now I was dead last.

I made up some positions pretty quickly, but then the gaps were bigger at the front and the drivers faster, so it took a while until I was back near the top 3, closing in on Sam.

Just when I managed to get within 2 seconds of him, the high risk driving I was conducting bit me back as I was negotiating T2. Trying to go flat out or nearly flat out through there, I lost the car a bit, went wide into the grass, and couldn't stop on time for T3. The car spun across and into the haybale at the apex of the corner and then over the nasty curb. Either of those ripped my rear wheel off, so a shift-r, a 10 seconds pitstop and I was back in the race, but now with lots of fuel, cold tires and huge gap to the front.

The car appeared to handle a bit better this time, so perhaps those early contacts did some damage which was now "repaired". That allowed me to do some quick and consistent lap times, and despite some issues with backmarkers, who I believe just weren't aware of my presence or thought it's a fight for position, I managed to move up to 4th, with Sam 12 seconds ahead with 10 laps to go.

It happened so that I managed to be in a position to attack him right on the last lap, but once I was in front, he suddenly sped up and with the aid of slipstream was a big threat all the way until the end. It was a very exciting finish to an exciting race, but the distraction from watching F1 on Tv while going on the straights and the lack of practice on full tanks probably robbed me from a possible victory.

Grats to Juha and Tim, you looked like you had a great race up front!

When he passed me I decided to experiment for the rest of the lap and brake when H braked  ::). Was very surprised how late it was actually possible to brake and still meet the corner.

I'm glad you didn't decide to brake later than that!  ;D

We did  ;D

Each of us had setups that were better in different sections of track despite driving the same car with almost identical lap times.
Juha's setup seemed better at high speeds - wether it was more stable or simply gave more grip I don't know, but he would pull away substantially out of the high speed turns (Especially Chapel and Abbey, although for some reason not Woodcote).
While I was better under heavy braking and in the slow turns, where I would reel Juha back in and even gain some small amount of time on him if I'd dropped back at all.

After trying not to laugh too much at the start (Sorry H  :ninja:), my race consisted of following as close as I could to Juha in my 2D and trying to force him into an error - a kind of slower version of my race with H in the 66's last week.
Juha was having none of it however and plain refused to make any sort of usefull error that I could capitalise on  >:(
Things got much more interesting as we began catching backmarkers, they were all great but were often taken by suprise I think when I appeared immediatly behind Juha. However all went well in that regard, occaisionally Juha would catch someone in the wrong place and nearly give me an opening - other times I'd get stuck instead..
Most enjoyable part of the race had to be near the end when we caught a group of some 5 or 6 cars all caught up in their own battles and had to fight our own way through this field while striving to gain an advantage over each other  ;D

My ever increasing pressure on Juha ended about 4 laps from the finish when he braked slightly earlier for Club than he had in the rest of the race (setting himself up for a backmarker we were just catching) and I was caught out.
I think my emergency braking and swerve must have missed him by centimeters, before I ran out of track and put 2 wheels on the grass round the outside - amazingly I'd only lost a second in this but based on previous battles through backmarkers I'd need more than 4 laps to get back to a position I can harass from without the help of more backmarkers.

As it happened the backmarkers didn't appear so Juha had a relatively safe win after all the action of the race - Well done on a great drive Juha  :thumbup1:
Well done to H on a great recovery - shame Sam couldn't hold you off though as team Orange could do with some added points to catch you back up after all our assorted holidays!

Axel,  no worries,  just a racing incident.  I couldn't decide which way to try and ended up going smack into the middle of you.

The race was great fun for the preceding laps with 5 or 6 of us at close quarters with some good clean but tight racing going on.

The Mk1 was a lovely car to drive; I found her a bit down on acceleration but with trying to hold as much corner speed as possible and good handling we managed to stay in touch, just about.

 :)

it was expected starting order of first 3 drivers of us, Hristo on pole and me 2nd , i did know Tim are very fast with GT's too so guess his pace was good in race. Not a perfect laptime in quali, but i did below 1.30 and thats enough for now, couldnt do any faster setup.

didnt expect any offs by very experienced driver Hristo on warmup lap but i anyway see it,tough luck ? .
I was attituded to follow close behind Hristo with aid of slipstream all race but no this time .

Tim was following all race very close but i didnt have serious troubles to keep my car on road this very well known circuit. Some troubles with backmarkers too now and then, setup was stable for race but was quite bad on slow turns .After watching race replay seems Tim drift all corners he do, i couldnt do that on any corners ,  maybe setup or driver depending issue?  :D  Anyway happy to win first ever GT event !

hope to win next event too but maybe harder to do it with other cars.

Juha
