Title: UKGPL Season 21 (2011) Novices (65) - Silverstone (GP 1952-73) - Jun 14
Post by: miner2049er on June 11, 2011, 03:51:38 PM +0100
UKGPL Season 21 65 Novices Trophy
Race 4 Silverstone

The fourth round of the championship sees the Novices at Silverstone, driving around the former World War 2 Bomber Base.

Half the circuit is in Northamptonshire and half is in Buckinghamshire, and it was first used for motorsport in September 1947 when 12 friends held an impromptu race on the deserted airfield. One of them, Maurice Geoghegan, from Silverstone village ran into a sheep writing off his car. The sheep didn't fare too well either and the race became known as the Mutton Grand Prix.

Drivers should be especially careful on lap 1 as usual but hopefully this fast circuit will not compress the field once safely through Becketts.

Please see the Novices registration thread for an explanation of the chassis allocations shown below:

Forgot about my daugthers Birthday (well didn't forget, just kept thinking it was tomorrow), so I doubt I'll be able to make it here tonight.

Hope everyone has fun.

Sigh - tell me about it. Son was thirteen last month. Cinema tickets £89. Popcorn and drinks £54. Nando's meal. £89. Smile on his face. Priceless.

...still bloody expensive though  ;D

£89 for cinema tickets? Did you rent the whole cinema, or I am getting old? I haven't been to the cinema in a while, please tell me that was for a large group of people.

11 people - 2 adults and nine children - Joseph invited five friends and of course, Mummy, his elder brother and younger twin sisters just had to see Pirates of the Carribean 4 (which was actually quite good fun).

In addition to which I just can't nail this bloody track. 1:35.10 - blast.

If you do 35s every lap you will finish quite well.

Lol - 35.10 if I nail one lap - the next one tends to be a 1:43 or so :(

In 67's though I can do a 2.03 - no problem at all, well except for Beckets, Stowe, Club, Abbey, Woodcote, Copse - oh and a couple of others. Some people say 'once round the track', I prefer hundreds of times round... :D

after great Pole (my PB) 1-32.7
i was afraid about my engine and lowered gears for race... ::)
wasnt good idea.
i did slow start and droped down to P4, all my target was to do no contact or PP race....
then long time was in P2 chasing Cookie.. so from some 10sec i get close to 7.5sec when
SKYPE JUMP OUT with blinking message, that someone have birth day!!!!!!!...1 sec later i had "roof" in T1
here my nightmare starts...
so after all i did 4 spins, one crash with tree, 2 shits+R,
also tried first time ever how to correct  join in race when ALL cars pass you buye...
whyle i raced nostalgic backmarkers race, i did all what i can do, to avoid another contact with slower car in front of me at T1... it brake so early that i hit all my brakes as hard and spun again and lost place for Fossa...
my skype is still blinking, it was during all race
(i believe from replay there will be a huge crash for moderators, so i will lost my last place and gain some ban :hammer:) but maybe not)
atleast FL is something good in all this frustrated Silverstone.

Gratz Cookie and podium for deserved win!

next time.
ps
will watch replay for Blito masterpiece

Good race generally. Got a good start and got up to eighth and was holding it nicely when I saw a Fezza up on the banking at Beckets. I zoomed past but Norbert was having none of it... wasn't too pleased at the time. Left me backwards on the racing line so I went to donut quick but others were coming though. Well done to Rog and Jason for avoiding me. Had a nice few laps with Jason and he got a run on me down the farm straight so I took the inside and compromised myself a bit hoping the Honda power would play on the S/F but he passed me around the outside - good one. I braked a bit late for Cospse and then floored it too early, spinning. That put me behind Sky and Fabio and I spent ages chasing them. Sky made a mistake and ended up 10 yds behind. He then lost it at Copse when I think he thought I braked a bit early - but it was my usual place. Couldn't catch the Red Baron but with two laps to go - there he was backwards at Copse. It all happens there. Drove carefully after that and finished ninth.

Very pleased - had some racing and got a top ten with no shift-r's.

I was surprised to be down in 12th with a 1:35.50 though.

Big congrats to JB (B*stard :D) and well done podium. Hard luck K.

 ;D WOW  ;D

Gratz to all finishers! Especially to my great master Martin for 2nd :thumbup2:

Funny thing is I had a pretty good setup this afternoon, but just short before the race I tried a Steve Cloyd setup.
This was not faster but way easier to drive after some little modifications and had a really short first gear ;)
So I decided to test in Qualy both. For the race I took it!

Start was great and I was gone, controlling the distances in pribluda, til Karliss suddenly was no longer there :o and my friend Martin appeared 2nd  ;D
Rest was a little boring and dangerous not to loose concentration, but I managed not to make the slightest mistake ::)
Counting the laps down I finished without any incident...

Cheers

Sorry about that :-\.
Entirely my fault of course. Got hit by Maddog (because of immense warp at that time, it seems).
Found myself facing backwards and misjudged the situation again, when I tried to enter the scene.

Well done Cookie - never saw you after the grid & to 2nd & 3rd also. What a lot of warping. I backed off the Maddog/Fabio dice a little as they were disappearing so much but then Johnny was catching & he was too & so I assume was I. Fabio & Maddog eh! that's like throwing a lighted match into a box of dynamite :P. Fabio spun & then Karliss's Skype friend gave us all a birthday present ;) & I was 3rd.

After a few laps I made what I think was my one & only mistake of the race & spun to rejoin 7th. If Jason was Jensen then Norm was Nico!. Gave him room to pass as he was obviously faster. Maybe I should defend more. Roguk did but spun. Jason had a trip up the banking & to avoid him I went on the grass & Rog went past. Motored on to finish 8th with the 3 in front of me all visible a little way ahead.

Really I'm kicking myself for the spin when under no obvious pressure other than to stay in the gap between Maddog & Johnny O. There's always the next one

The warping thing where cars just disappear in front of you is really disconcerting. A few times I was catching up but being really cautious because I couldn't always see them. Interestingly, I never had anyone disappear when they were really close so I wonder if it was truly warp or just the server deciding they were too far away to draw?

Spot on Paul. I noticed that but not being a techie I don't know why. Maybe backing off at first was the wrong thing to do. I was forced to speed up again by Johnny anyway. Some of the disappearances were so long I genuinely thought they had disco'd (in my dreams eh! ;)).  Can't remember who but someone on post race chat said they backed off as well for the same reason.  Something we all have to put up with but its worth it.

You and me both. When Karliss and Du Fossa turned up behind me I dismissed it as a glitch. Incidentally I am celebrating the fact that this was the first race in which I avoided being lapped. Feels good but I wasn't sure until Mike posted the results.

Yes Paul warping was a great handicap in this race, for me especially in Qualifiying!
Couldn't do a clean lap on my first stint with all this warp around, so I decided to leave the server with ~11min  left.
But took me about 5min to rejoin because of rejecting me with "too high ping", allready thought I will miss this race!
Thank god I could rejoin with a ping of about 150 and do my best lap.

My race strategy was to come in save, so I never had to push hard, thats why I only really lapped the most unlucky Billy who afterwards followed me  perfect driving.
After the studium of the reports, I am proud to not have left the track a single time until the finish where i kissed the flagman :sweatdrop:
The most interresting report for me is allways the "race history graph".

I had lots of wrapping around me too, sometimes just at the distance, but often the cars jumped so bad that i was not sure if they are infront or behind me... i tought it was my connection, but i had some nice close battles with some non-warping drivers. I got disconnected at the end anyway.

I suggest we don't use a ping limit for UKGPL races, unless you want to prevent people from joining even if it's not their fault or they happen to have a high ping for a few minutes. Can easily miss a race that way...

As for warping, before I joined the Pro race, I saw the Novices server had a ping of over 800, and the server restart didn't cure that. Probably some temporary issues on server side connection.

Had a moment where cars disappear, I believe it was between laps 5-10.

At the moment I leave is to increase the distance at which insurance.I believe silverstone when running with a small engine, the best thing is to be regularity, you are only going forward if the pilot error.

Nice one, even if I could expect a better final postion...

Qualify was really hard, lots of warp but finally I set the 4th time :thumbup1:

At race start I really wanted to avoid any problem so I started very carefully but I was able to get the 3rd position :thumbup2:

After few laps I got Martin at my back, warping like a maddog!, and it was really hard.

Then I made a mistake and I found myself on 11th place but I wasn't able to recover so many places as I expected.

Thx of some errors, I climbed few position but, 2 laps before the checquered flags I had no more fuel so I sadly park my red car on the grass...

As it' not my first time on doing this, I will have to calculate better for the next ones :censored:

Grats to the winner, the podium, to everybody raced and, last but not least, to the racing organization!

Long Live UKGPL!

Another entry in the Billy Nobrakes "How to mess up a GPL Race" - Chapter 14 Jump Start. Starting from P10 what I thought was a green flag going down was a green flag going up. From the proper start I found a Honda slowing rapidly into Copse - hit the brakes, span into the armco & bounced back across track into the path of Skymole (deepest apologies).
Pitted at the end of Lap 1 for what seems like forever - I think it was actually a 30 second wait penalty. Set off last & span off at Woodcote. Not even half way through Lap 3 & I pulled into to let Cookie lap me. Was seriously considering retiring but Silverstone has a wonderful flow so I stuck with it. Bizzarely I ran the remainder of the race 400 / 500 yards behind race leader & half a mile in front of 2nd placed Maddog, matched them lap for lap even pulling slightly away from Maddog. Climbed four places due to people having worse luck than me.
Albi next - that should be FUN.

Black Night Racing management suggest using the BT11 - it uses exactly the amount of fuel you put in it.

do i must post race report for "incident" where collision was too close, and may look like collision from some angles?
after race i discussed with other car, and it even didnt noticed what happen behind. (i hit full brakes and spun)

do i must report or no, cos other car is not involved, but third party can make different opinion, especialy from server replay, where is recorded god knows what.

I was wonder about the same lately, Karlis, because otherwise some people keep putting others at danger but get away with it and then go on to repeat the same thing again. So indeed, do we really have to wait for a contact to happen before reporting? Or maybe the question should be, is it worth reporting a situation where no contact occurred? I think I asked Tim something like that recently, but it would be nice to have more of a public statement about it.

If in doubt report it. The novices is fully nodded but you review the footage at high speed so slight clashes can get missed. If you report it though, the moderator can take a closer look. If a pattern of poor driving emerges the moderators can take action. Often there are not enough incident reports. So, go ahead Karliss and report it.

As a general rule I would say report anything you want the moderators to look at specifically.

Things did not start well for me, at Silverstone.  My car's get up and go, seemed to have got up and gone, and I had to thrash some life back into it, to avoid being a tail ender.

Things improved after the opening scuffle, as I moved up from 8th, to 4th, in the first lap.  Norbert lay ahead in his fast Ferrari.  But as I jinked to his inside at Becketts, to undertake him, I was out jinxed by the Server, when his car suddenly disappeared !  The warping would get worse for a spell. Meanwhile, this sudden strangeness, made my car jump the curb in surprise.  Without hesitation, the curb flung it back across Norbert's nose . . . where he'd inconveniently reappeared to receive my greeting . . . grumble!  :(

I recovered, managing to chase down Fabio, who seemed less than enthusiastic at my being there.  We commenced a good scrap, which included some dancing lessons from our Server.  Then banged wheels once or twice, before he over-rotated at Club, and I was suddenly 2nd !  So there I stayed, keeping a brief, but constant gap back to Norm, and later Jonnie O, in 3rd.

A dominating win by Cookie, and a rather pleased 2nd placer.  Much unfulfilled promise from Fabio, and Karliss, with his incredible speed.  The good thing is, there's always another race, just around the corner.  :D

Even if there is warp it does not always mean that a penalty will not be issued as in this case.

If you're using 7zp then you can change the format to zip, rar or a few others.

I also think, and stand to be corrected, that if the clip is short enough you can attached an uncompressed replay file.

Well normally we don't allow in new evidence after the fact ie you cannot submit a client replay when you chose not to do so during the reporting process. However, it is appreciated you did have issues sending it originally so, as an exception, if you do Appeal I will look at it. Please note, in future, client replays MUST be submitted during the incident reporting period. If you are having difficulties attaching it try a different zip format or make sure it is short enough to just attach the actual replay clip itself.

Accordingly yes you can appeal by sending me a PM and stating the reasons why you think the decision was wrong. When making your decision on whether to do this please bear in mind Mike's comments in the moderation as I can see he makes mention of warp. Our rules relating to warp incidents are here (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/warp) and I recently put a note here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=9525.0) in the announcements section on this subject which gives some further advice as to how matters are treated.
