Time of Day Setting: 14:00
Start: STANDING
Tyre wear: 2x
Fuel consumption: Normal

Server: simracing.org.uk WPC
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules.
(3) The AI control should be turned off so that you have control of the car at all times, including pitting. Your player file should therefore read
Autopit="0"
Force Autopit Off="1" // Forces autopit always off
No AI Control="1" // AI never has control over car
If you still finding pitting problematic, experience tells us that its less to do with positioning and more to do with approach speed. A slow approach to pit crew chief has proved most reliable.
(4) Driver lists can be found on the Championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=318&theme=5)

Special Notes: Some of the cars have a "Modern Compound" tyre choice. Can I ask that all drivers do not use these tyres please. This event is started by a flagman. Drivers are strongly advised to have the countdown switched on. To ensure that your pit crew are ready for your arrival, enter the pit lane as soon as possible after passing the green flag man on your right.

This event requires drivers to reserve their chosen car

To reserve your preferred car simply post below and I will add them to the list.

Cars supplied on a strictly first come, first served basis.

A list of drivers and their cars will be shown HERE (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AuS59xI7-YTLdHNaYjRaTHFVUlZBTzBNS3drbVFLVGc&hl=en_US as successful applications are processed.)

Same car which I raced yesterday for me:

Porsche 908/3 #15  ;D

Although - in real history - the 908/3 started it's long lasting career at LeMans in 1972  ;)

Some words of advice to anyone contemplated entering a long distance GTL event (like this one for example) and perhaps some reminders to the more experienced drivers.
  • This race has at least 40 laps so don't drive like your trying to win it on lap 1
  • Only carp drivers crash at the first corner
  • Practise your pit entry and pit stops and remember to bind keys to control your pitboard

Hope the above helps everyone to have a long fun race. I'll add further "thoughts" as they come to me

I have changed the virtual race start time from 16:00 back to 14:00

Did you do this for a special reason? I always find dusk at Le Mans a bit special  :-\

.. still have to test which car to take..

ps. The first update (filenr=27556) seems to contain a AIW file which is overwritten by the second update (filenr=34097). Is this correct or am I missing something?

I think I'll follow a different advice for this long race (and particularly it being at the Le Mans track) - not enter it at all!  ;D

Good luck to all who are going to participate, I admire how you resist the boredom of such a race!

It struck me that nearly every "special" Le Mans event I've done tried to include dusk. I felt it would be nice to do one that didn't for a change. However I have no strong feelings either way so if you guys want a 16:00 start post here and I'll change it back.
I wasn't sure if about the content of the AIW files so I included both. I'll delete the first one now. Thanks for the spot Alex.

I can force myself to concentrate, but I know from experience I'm not going to enjoy it. It's mostly a matter of engine power and waiting for those endless straights to end. In 9 out of 10 races at this track I've ended up running on my own, so close racing rarely happens unless people wait for each other.

Know exactly what you mean. Even in the lower orders it is nearly always a solitary experience but that's the nature of enduro and why I consider it a challenge albeit in a different way.

Tested last night and can't decide between the long-tail and the K  ::) .... bearing in mind its 2.4hrs the short-tail is more manageable but i'm 7 secs quicker in the long tail down to 3m20

I was disappointed at first this wasn't the Virtual_LM version but although it is not as pretty its the best layout of this track! Wish they never changed it!

I was also considering the long tail as it is the quickest car, but I wanted to have someone to race against. There will be many 917K's out there and now a Ferrari 512 has joined the party so it was the logicial choice for me.

@Hristo: I will be really disappointed if you don't change your mind, come on & let's have some fun at Le Mans...& I would like the server gets filled up  ;)

Completely forgot to tell my problem at Valencia, but I lacked the Porsche 908 'sry'  :)
That which seemed a little strange after I had put it in, I still could not get on the server & had to download the full Pro package again before it worked  ???

Read somewhere on NoGrip that there could be some issue with darkness and headlights so better leave it like it is methinks.

As many probably know, I have spent many hours/years of GPL & one of the race I remember best was a 31 or 33 laps race at Le Mans in more than 2 hours.

There is a problem on some sections of the circuit where headlights/darkness cause some graphic glitches. Not enough to ruin a race but certainly distracting.

just tried the '77 VLM version and the textures are so so superior  :(

is there any way of getting the dirty versions of the 512S working? trying to go through the Hubert thread on NoGrip but it doesn't seem obvious how and I don't want to cause mismatches? the shiny 512 seems a bit too cartoony

Please Help
What do I use to "extract the *.AIW into your "Lemans70" directory and replace the old one".  What old one, my LeMans70 directory is empty, am I missing something again by not having GTR2 installed. Do I need to install LeMans70 from GTR2 first.  I'm confused of BoS. ???

Then presumeably I add "LeMans70.gdb" and then run the SROU Install file.

The LeMans70 installer (from the link provided) should install into your GTL directory and the AIW/GBD file just needs to be copied and pasted into the track folder. I think it overwrites files or is an addition, either way its fine. There was another AIW file to install but now it is just this one as it did the same job. Nothing should be as complicated as what your worried about  :)

Hope that helps?

Bill, do not use any GTR2 installer. Just install the downloaded content and it should install in your GTL directory.
The directory is called lemans70.
One note of caution: my lemans70 track had a conflict with the 'new' Le Mans track (which we used heavily in the past).
I uninstalled this version first before installing the lemans70 track.

Hope this helps.

Tony, much as it grieves me in the current climate,  please can I book a Matra.  It's the only car I stand any chance of doing the race distance in, that's if I'm not driven mad or deaf by the engine note; (reduce sound on my car to 50% to try and reduce it).

There are quite a few changes from the PnG version we used.  Need to get some laps in and do fuel consumption test as well.

Bill, thinking about taking the Alfa 33. With Eifel taking on the 908and you in the screaming Mata,  we can turn the P3.0 category in a gentlemen drivers class, much like LMP2 nowadays  ;)

Sure Bill Thomas, just provide a car # please

just tried the '77 VLM version and the textures are so so superior  :(

is there any way of getting the dirty versions of the 512S working? trying to go through the Hubert thread on NoGrip but it doesn't seem obvious how and I don't want to cause mismatches? the shiny 512 seems a bit too cartoony

The read-me in the install pack says there is no dirty style. Yes the 77 VLM version is visually superior but it's really had to be the 1970 version for this series.

For those new to this series..................

There are some revised sound mods available for some of the cars in this series. It won't cause a miss-match if you have them or not, the choice is yours. Installation is simples, just read and follow the instructions  ::)

Bill, thinking about taking the Alfa 33. With Eifel taking on the 908and you in the screaming Mata,  we can turn the P3.0 category in a gentlemen drivers class, much like LMP2 nowadays  ;)

Alex, let me know the car # when your decided.

Did some laps yesterday in different cars:

Matra (still without a suitable setup and without a faultless lap): 3.50,9
908-2: 3.46,5
908-3: 3.44,8
Alfa:    3.39,5
T70-Maserati (#33): 3.36.6

Great track! Like made for these cars.

Maybe I'll change the car to Alfa or T70 - but need some more practice. ;)

It seems odd, I did fine on the server, but...server says LeMans70, unfortunately I think it was LeMans_Virtua_LM 77 or 79 I drove on  :o

Edit:Strangely, if I try offline, I can see 'Lemans70' but can not select it ? Downloaded from Megaupload.

I think earlier in this thread someone posted about about a conflict between versions of Le Mans tracks. Or I could have cooked up. I'll check later.

Server now running 70's Le Mans and has all reserved cars ready for practise.

There was a conflict between two versions of the Le Mans circuit on the server but this is now resolved, I hope.

Please try to join the online circuit at least once before race day to check that your able to race OK?

More strangely, I removed the track 'LeMans_Virtua_LM', but could still join the server & run a 77 or 79 version  :o Looked throughout my 'Locations' folder & discover a '1967LeMans' folder...& another one '24HLemans'  ???
When I removed '24HLemans' I arrived at the server on the right track 'lemans70'...& track can now also be selected offline.

Yes NRJ, that was fun...& Merry Christmas

I have 2 questions for you Tony:

1)  I get a message saying  "Lemans 70 gdb mismatch" as I go leave the pit on the server. I don't get kicked from, so will I be OK ?

2) What is the Dayligt time acceleration settings ?

Thanks in advance.

Stig.

Tony, can you please book me the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/3 #38

Great Alex, we're on the same team again :- )) Assuming I'm using the right version of the track, I do a 3,31,500 lap on medium fuel an hard tyres. I'll send you my setup, in case you wanna try it.

1) You have not downloaded and installed the track patch as expressly instructed in the Race Announcement. Hence you have a different GDB to the track that the server is running.

2) No daylight accelerator in GTL online races unfortunately.

I strongly recommend to test the pitstop here. If you don't keep to the rigth where the man with green flag is posted, you will miss the 'pit-entry'. Also there is a pitspeed limit on this track.

Absolutely right. I was DQ'd from the GTLDK race here earlier this year when I tried reversing back up the pitlane cos my pit man hadn't appeared.

I would strongly suggest that a practise pitstop be an essential part of everyones preparation.

You'll get warnings very easily and - I think - after three warnings a stop and go penalty!

The 908-3 in my hands is by far the slowest one - pb up to now is 3.38.9 (which is exactly the quali-time of 3rd place 908-2 in 1970's race  ;) - the 908-3 didn't arrive at LeMans before 1972, when they drove a slightly longer/slower version of the track) with full tank and I don't think there will be much space to lower laptimes for me (so over 8 seconds difference within the same class  :( ), but race lasts over 2 1/2 hours...

I must be driving one of those russian things cause my best lap yet is a 3.41 (full tank) , so that is a gap of 11 secs.
And I am using the set-up you sent to Alex , so that is not the problem   :-[
I think it is just my level of driving or am I missing a 7th gear or something ? ;D

Great film (if you like cars ) I might just dig out my dvd to watch this afternoon.

Only done a few laps to choose my car and sort a rough race setup. Best time so far 3:30.xxx but I can probably push that with better braking.

I've changed my Alfa sounds to use those of the 312P. Sacrilige I know, but I reckon 42 laps in the Alfa will do my ears in otherwise. More importantly I've got some smoked salmon and a nice bottle of Chardonnay in the fridge to keep me fuelled up for the night  ;D

You are soooo decadent GT :D

Carefull on the liquid intake though, what goes in needs to come out and it's a long race.

shame i missed the test race last night. Looking forward to the slip-streaming for miles and miles  :)

wished i never broke down in 2008 in the Group C's :( only had 5 laps before the race but remember my mechanic telling me the car was topping out at 222 mph for about 10 secs before the chicanes. At least with downforce the car felt planted but these must have had lots of lift... bloody terrifying. Anyways, preparing the Le Mans dvd for some background noise for the race!  ;D

Argh Mike  :(

What is a home, without this DVD
...and what do I see? This year it has been released on blu-ray, with DTS sound, should I really buy another one?

after all that practise i can't seem to find the server. Have the GTL Revived edition as my old DVD wouldn't work on Win7, tried the Lobby patch too and see only 5 servers available and can't connect via direct ip. Gutted  :-[

was evolving into a really interesting race... got to the 45 min mark and had to pit for a s/g after a few ambitious lines through the old porsche curves.... as I pulled into the pit stall the game crashed  :-\

still great fun and amazing pace John!

was having a great time dicing with GT, went into pits at end of lap 15 with fuel light just starting to flash
pulled up to my pit guy as I had practiced, but he didnt see me
reversed back a bit and forward ad infinitum, still no go. turned off auto gears
and engine stopped, but no pit work, so left.

Yea, thanks Tony for the Series and all the other Series and Events you've organised during the year - tip top car/track combos.  :thumbup1:

During practice, I found 2 places where I "lost"  ::) the car in the race - one a jump the barrier and the other over the sand dune and into a permanent spin in space.  ???  I drove steadily at those 2 points and avoided trouble up to my pit stop.  ;D Changed rear tyres and fuelled up.  After that the car seemed nicer to drive and after a fastest race lap I thought I'd amuse myself by seeing if I could do better.   :jumpjoy: What a wally,  :hammer: went too fast into that right hand kink before the right angle left hander and finished up on the left side of the track and was unable to avoid going over the top of the sand dune - race over.  :'(

Perhaps I'll be able to last longer tonight - at least I know the track better and it's not got any "spins in space", at least I've not found any - plenty of unforgiving banks though.  :o

Great event last night Tony and thanks for putting this series together. Just wish I could have made more of them.

The Alfa was terrific around here with quite a stiff setup and a few tweaks to my ffb settings I felt really in the seat. Had a nice start and managed to maintain a gap to Matt behind up until about lap 12 or so when my tyres started to suffer.

I had a miraculous escape going through the fast right/left (old Porsche curves?) when I did a complete 360, missing everything and continuing on in 3rd gear. Couldn't do that again if I tried. This allowed however Matt to close right up and we had a great battle as we changed places for a couple of laps before I decided to pit. Forgot to fill up with fuel, so I only did 5 or so laps before my next stop for a half tank and new tyres. By this time Matt had retired which was a real shame as I'm sure it would have been a race long battle.

I had another scare when I went a bit deep into Indianapolis, but managed to keep things pretty clean for the rest of the race. The last half hour or so was tough going, but reat to be able to finish an event like this.

Well done to John for a dominant win and to all those who took part  8)

This was a fantastic end to this series...Thanks to everyone who joined, & a special big thank you to Tony  :thumbup2:

Qual:
Regardless of who should hold the pole, I wanted a Porsche 917 first...but suddenly there came a name 'John W' at the top 'wtf Ferrari'...& who is John W.???  :D
Luckily, NRJ & I know some tricks...& everything ended as planned  ;D

Race:
My plan was medium tires, fit very well on my tires so I could run 14 laps & 2xpit...but in the race, nothing can be predicted, one thing is always exciting & unpredictable.
917 had no chance against 512 (John W) & we lost seconds every lap. Unfortunately, we meet Bill an unfortunate place on the track, the hard & fast S cornering 'Maison Blanche'. Maybe I should have waited until after, but Bill seemed fast...suddenly we're in the middle of the turn, Bill, me & NRJ & everything goes wrong. We made a mistake, but the same happened in the movie.
After the turn, I look more in the mirror after NRJ...& I is on way to the old part of Le Mans (without chicane) & watching a straw bale & BANG 'DOH'. NRJ is rotating at 200 mph past me on the grass & disappears into the black hole, ARGH. Both Porsche 917 sidelined in seconds.
What lies back of my 917 I packages together & crawl into the pit. Fine work of mechanics - the car was fine again - but weird: XD still said 100% engine, but there were no forces & especially topspeed was gone.  :(

Pit stop strategy was gone, but I struggled with my blunt 917 & are able to make a mistake more, the last pit stop I order too little fuel & may later take a splash n' dash & GT that was my next goal could sit & laugh  :D
Overall: I'm glad I managed to get a Porsche 917 on the podium & not least, finish on the podium as the champ in this fine series  8)

Big Grats to John W & GT...incredibly nice there were so many left after several hours of race  :thumbup1:

I wish you all a Happy New Year  :punk:

Yes, As Pelle said two 917's are quicker than 1 ;D. But Pelle was the one who actually deserved the better time as he is always faster than me in these cars. But with our shenanigans I was the fortunate one  :). I for one was well aware of John W's abilities ;). We had an all IROC 911 P&G race(I think it was a GamersCribs race) in May of 2009 at the Nordschleife Tourist. It was a 7 lap race where we battled for the win and were never more than 3 seconds apart for the entire race :o. Honestly, it was one of my best ever performances in an online race as both of us never made any bad mistakes and the last lap was our fastest lap with myself driving at 10/10th's for the whole last lap. So it was no surprise to me that John W was so dang fast in that Ferrari ;D. The start went well although John did get a better jump on me and was leading going into the first sets of turns. I could of passed going down the Mulsanne straight but I just figured that John was going to be faster and didn't want anything bad to happen in the braking zone. I say that because I was having a real problem on a full tank keeping the 917 from yawing to the right under threshold braking. As I thought John was quicker and started pulling away slowly but steadily at every split time. After a lap or so Pelle started closing the gap to me and then I started making some little mistakes which allowed Pelle to pass. I was maybe a second or two behind Pelle when I saw him closing on Bill entering the s's. Once Pelle got pasted I thought go right and then there was no right so I tried to juke to the left only to drop my left side wheels in the dirt. I didn't lift off the gas enough and the car started to spin. Unfortunately I spun off to the right before the last chicane and was then in the Twilight Zones eternal spin. DOA :P It was still fun to run a proper Le Mans race with proper Le Mans cars ;D

A big congrats to John W for another steller performance 8) Props to Goldtop for a solid 2nd place and to Pelle for getting back to 3rd place somehow ;D
Also a solid nod to Kurt and Alex for both finishing that grueling race

   *************WPC Champions************
Both well earned and deserved all around 8)
Overall Champion Pelle B
S5.0 Champion Pelle B
P3.0 Champion Alex vV
P2.0 Champion Phspok
That goes equal to Tony,Kurt and Syd in their respective podiums places in the Championships
There were also some very close competitors that just missed a pody spot and they too deserve another nod for there performances. You know who you are ;)

And once again a special thank you to Tony for being a rock in the GTL world. Truly keeping this oldie but a goodie game rolling strong :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

Unofficial LapChart (http://www.justanotherpage.nl/Srou/GTL/LM70Dec11/)

What a gruelling race!

Start proved to be rather funny because I was looking at a marshall instead of the flag man. Moved when everybody else already started  :D (I refuse to use the countdown thingie).
The the first 6 laps were classic slipstream battles with my follow Alfa competitors and Eifel's 908. Classic stuff on the Mulsanne straight all without incidents  8)
Then teamie Sandor misjudged the classic Porsche curves and went off big time (at least it was a nice sight  :-\ ).
With nobody around I settled to bring the car in for my first an only pitstop. With tyre values deep in the red and running on fumes fortunately the pitcrew was sober and serviced the car.
After the pitstop I was behind Eifel and tried to catch up. Got the difference back from 25 sec to around 10 but could not match some monster laps.
Last half hour proved to be very uncomfy on a deskchair. Did some stretching on the straight and was glad I finished  :wheelchair:
Congrats to Eifel. You rightly won our little Gentleman Driver competition  :thumbup1:

A BIG thanks to Tony for organising this championship. Proved to by not everybody's cup of tea, but I thoroughly enjoyed the awesome monster machines from the 70's. Let's you know how though these cars were to drive (oversteer, understeer).. very much appreciated!
Also thanks to everybody who showed up. There was some good racing.

Congrats to the fast guys at the front.

Ah, I see that I won quite some silverware. When is the award ceremony  ;D (expecting lots of champagne)

I think that's the longest race I've ever done! Impressed at the number of runners at the end as well. It was a shame to see the two 917s out of contention so early on - unlucky guys. The same as with Pelle & Navin, I also came up on some people a bit quicker than I was expecting a couple of times but luckily for me they were on the ball every time :thumbup1: Thanks also to Navin for not attempting a pass at the end of the Mulsanne, once I saw the flash of lights I knew I'd be safe to turn in.

Grats to all finishers in this very challenging race

Yeah, I remember that one! You were on fumes going over the line, if I remember correctly. Good race :)

Nothing to add to Alex' comments - thanks.

The 908-3 was smooth to drive, I had time for practice and I know and love the track  :)
so I did my very best to see the finish with mostly constant driving and could register
another new pb.

But it was a very long one and not easy to focus on it in the end.

Happy new year to all - fine community here!

And once again: a big thanks to Tony and all involved for organizing all these events
in the past and for the upcoming year  ;D
