UKGPL Season 21 Porsche Super Cup
Race 6 Solitude

Race 6 in the Porsche Super Cup happens at the longest circuit of the season, Solitude, Germany.

Remember, you cannot win the race on the first lap but you can go a long way to losing it.  The driver who wins is usually the driver who makes the least mistakes.

The Solituderennen events and the 11.4 km Solitudering near Stuttgart were named after the nearby Castle Solitude. Motorsports events were held there from 1903 to 1965.  Due to the narrow track, initially mainly motorcycle events were held there until 1956. The track and the pits were widened in early 1957 and sports car racing was staged by the automobile club ADAC.  From 1961 to 1964, non-Championship Formula One Grand Prix races were also held, in addition to previous Formula 2 and Formula Junior events. The last "Grand Prix of Solitude" with F1 cars was held in July 1964, including drivers like Jim Cark, Jack Brabham, Graham Hill, Chris Amon, John Surtees. The 1964 race was won by Jim Clark in the Lotus 33. In 1965 the last "Solituderennen" on the Solitude track was an F2 race, won by Chris Amon.

Hey, I was there with my father on his DKW 175ccm motorcycle ;D
As we were great Motorcycle fans, our main interest was on John Surtees, who had just switched to F1.
We were sitting in a forrest around the last corner 8)

Even if I was there in real life, my knowledge of this GPL track is new.
Maybe it would help a little if one of the UKGPL servers could be there....

Greetings

I was Hosting a practice session as well yesterday night. We were 3 o 4 comprised Tristan Bot and Andrea Tendas.
We have no reference times about Porsches so it is a little hard to judge if a guy is faster or not.

You've had a practice session up a couple of times. Sadly, myself, Baab, Martin Hunt and (I think) Roberto are all unable to connect - I've ended up hosting races. Not sure what the issue is - just never makes the connection, so no error message to report.

Uhm...strange thing. Are you behind a router or a firewall ? If so, ensure to have the correct ports suitable for GPL opened (like I've done) and all would be fine, otherwise there is not reason why someone can connect and some others cannot.

Could we have some clarification from the moderators on the penalties for possible corner cutting at this track. In particular the back section can be shortened by straight lining the twisty bits in many places (ie all four wheels off track). Am I right in thinking this is not allowed and will be penalised?

Mike might have specific comment/rules for this particular track but the general rules on Corner Cutting are here (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/railriding).
"Corner cutting can be identified as placing all four wheels off the track surface."

I don't think there is any place on the track that you will actually gain an advantage if you cut with all 4 wheels.

Post by: miner2049er on July 13, 2011, 08:20:33 PM +0100
Yes, as Tim has said, Corner Cutting is covered in the rules so anyone regularly placing all 4 wheels off the track risks a penalty at the moderators discretion, irrespective of any advantage gained.

It is usually done to gain an advantage, even if it doesn't always work, but anyone doing it regularly will be in big, big, big, big trouble.

It can also mean those behind get a yellow flag too.

So if I someone keeps making a mistake each lap and cuts a corner they'll get a penalty? That would be a bit ridiculous as it should only be for gaining an advantage...

So you're saying if they consistently cut a corner? If it's done consistently how can it be a mistake?
We tried to make the rule reasonable, ie there is 'Accidental Corner Cutting'; "Occasional and unintentional corner cutting at random places on the lap."

I don't think it would be fair to expect the moderator to work out exactly whether a time advantage, and how much, has been gained on any particular lap. If someone keeps doing it it also poses a potential danger to others if they lose control.

What is "consistently"? 2 laps, 3 laps? That's what I don't understand and it's not in the rules. It seems rather subjective. Also, is it judged by the server replay? Because if that's so (and I'm almost certain it is), it may look like someone puts 4 wheels off the track on the server replay when they actually don't on their game client.

So if I someone keeps making a mistake each lap and cuts a corner they'll get a penalty?

No. I said:
Quote
anyone regularly placing all 4 wheels off the track risks a penalty at the moderators discretion

It is up to the moderator to decide if it is being done on purpose or not, regardless of advantage gained.

It's also unlikely that someone will make the same mistake at the same corner every lap.

As you can imagine it is very difficult to correctly word such a rule and have it apply to every scenario of corner cutting. If we say every time then it is unfair as a mistake could be penalised. If we say 3 times then a 50 lap race would have more chances of it than an 8 lap race.

That is why we say something like "at the moderators discretion" where we can apply common sense each time it happens. If you remember at Aintree both Karliss and Pete Maestro did it a lot but weren't penalised as I applied common sense and could see that they did not do it purposely to gain an advantage. At Adelaide Karliss did it lap after lap and I did think it was to gain an advantage so I penalised it.

I think we all know deep down what corner cutting is and anyone doing it takes a risk, just like railriding which has been in our rules for much longer.

Speaking about cutting corners, I suggest you all to disable "powders" (or "dust" I don't know the right word of the English version of GPL) visualization in the sim properties. I've got some powder in my eyes following Tristan and TomG and even 1/2 second lost while you're almost at the corner apex is leading directly into...a disaster, expecially with a crowded track at the beginning of the race !!!
So I decided to disable powders visualization.

Yeah, that may be a good idea, but seeing dust up ahead can prepare you for arriving at an accident scene or a spun car or whatever, so it's not always a handicap. Plus it can help you see where other drivers use more of the dirty edge of the track compared to yourself.  ;D

OK - Had a go. Track is not as bad as I had feared (I just can't get Nurby...) BUT after ten laps in the Porsche my best is still 4:10 :( So in the race I need a couple of mass pileups (preferably on lap 2 well ahead so that you have all disconnected by the time I get there). That way I can nurse the car home for my first win as the only finisher....

Well I am in the Honda team and their ad tag line is about the Power of Dreams....

Maybe I'd go quicker if I take one of the turnings into the wood or come down the river... has anyone tried the 'Alien' route - it's quite a giggle and I think anyone qualifying in less than 3:40 should have to take it every other lap...

In fact you're in Hiki-Waza and the tag line is "ALL OUR VICTORIES ARE BELONG TO HER!!!"  ;D

Anyway, 10 laps is definitely not enough for you to make valid judgement on how fast you are. It takes a lot more to actually learn the best line through each corner and manage to put up a lap together. I haven't driven it in Porsches yet, but it should be similar to how it is in 65s.

Yes Sergio, I had similar experiences in some races...
But now I also understand why I don't get rid of some guys, following me close, when I want them to get some dust in their face  ;D
For me the "disable dust button" seems not to work properly  ::)

You can't eat health  :nono:

A brain is like a muscle, if its not needed much it gets weak.

3 years ago, after a long disease with 8 month stationary treatment, I had a professional brain training!
Was doing exercises in math, grammar, geography, history and all the things, like in school. Did it 4 weeks for 2 hours a day.
After this I was fit like a 25year old again...

I never thought I would be the lead points scorer for Team HW1. Sad to see the team leader in the bales on Lap 1 and even sadder when I saw his disconnect. Made a couple of mistakes on lap 1 but then drove steadily (if slowly) and got a PB of 4:02. Good for me! Steady lapping got me away from Roberto who I have been having a private battle with all season long. I was no threat to Sky so it was a matter of getting home. Pleased to be so steady with 4.02, 4.04, 4.04 and 4.05 couple of slower laps when I was lapped but I had feared that I would be lapped two or three times. In the event I actually caught Roberto and he was very kind to me when I passed. 5 points between us and I haven't given up hope of catching him yet.

Tired after the race but pleased with seventh. I know it was a false position but I drove within myself and got some points for the team. Now I need a decent result in the GT's next Sunday.

I'm very disappointed with how the race turned out. After not having done any practice whatsoever I entered the Qualifying with 20 minutes to go and loaded up my Kyalami setup, adjusted 5th gear and left the pits. The setup felt quite OK and after a few more adjustments it was good enough, given the lack of practice. I could've done a better time, but caught up Fulvio on my best run and that lost me 1-2 seconds. Anyway, the lap times of Sergio and Tom were impressive, so what happened after the start was rather unexpected.

I didn't get a good acceleration at the start because of my longer 1st, but still managed to keep 1st and catch up the 2 in front as we exited T2. For some reason they were going slower than me at the time and Sergio in particular seemed unstable. Eventually I had a run on Tom (I think) down towards the fast right leading to the flat out section and with the aid of slipstream we caught up with the leader.

He started slowing down a bit earlier for the hairpin and so I went for the outside, but as we reached the turn in point I was still just slightly behind so I opted to take the outer line, giving a lot of space. Unfortunately my rival went in too hot, some warp contact occurred and I was spun into the wall. What was worse, there were all the cars coming from behind and a couple of them hit me, some others spun around, and it became quite a mess in which I lost probably at least 20 seconds.  :(

By the time I recovered the car had taken a lot of hits and I was surprised it could still handle quite well, though not as good as it was supposed to. I managed to make up some positions as I drove for the next couple of laps and then moved up to 4th, but after another lap pushing very hard to try and reduce the gap to the top 3, the engine started smoking and I kept losing power. With so many laps to go (11) I decided to just park it and retire. I doubt the engine would've lasted anyway.

Grats to Tom for taking the win, it's a shame we couldn't battle for it after how promising it looked to be just after the start.  :-\

Good start, avoided everybody elses first lap tete-a-tetes and proceeded to settle into a comfortable groove. Drove away from some of the guys behind but Axel gave chase. Took him some time catch me but I let him go without too much of a struggle. I had the idea that I might be seeing him again later.
Passed a couple of wrecks and saw the high number of disconnection messages, but as usual most of them were from behind me. The car was not particularly fast but it was reliable and comfortable to drive. Oh, and Clive....that rebuilt motor blew up midway around the out lap in qually. Hadn't even revved it to redline yet.
Anyway lasted about 500mts short of 9 laps without a mistake and looking at at least 6th place points....when halfway between T2 and T3 the internet dropped out and the server ejected me.  ??? ???

Why is it that in this the 21st Century, stuff owned by corporations for the purpose of making money.....never works properly for the customer?   >:(
Good race while it lasted......but very boring on your own.
Grats to podium,
Geoff.

No, it wasn't a false position Paul. "To finish first, first you must finish" You and the other 6 drivers in front of you completed the race. You earned that position, and no-one can say you didn't.

Thank you for your words Hristo, it has been a good day for our GPFun Team, we all made a good jump ahead. Hristo said Sergio and Tom impressive, what is impressive for me is that taking a watch out from TomG cameracar he reached 290 Km/h of top speed!!!!
I've never reached that speed, mine was 285 km/h in a slipstream. Anyway it has been a very good race for me also if I missed the opportunity to make a little step ahead more ;D but I made 2 mistakes that didn't permit me to win and most of all a man whose name is Tom Guèrout ;)  who has been almost perfect driving his Porsche, very good top speed, very good braking and turnig ability, I like to see his technic (I can't double downshift like him but his driving is spectacular at least for me). I made the pole, that was a surprise for me, I made also my PB obviously but I knew my qualify car could run very well and so it was. I still have some problems with gears spacing but...I hope to resolve this before to "be retired"  ;)
I didn't have idea that the championship may be so exicitng but this has been a nice summer surprise as well. I practiced a lot for Solitude because I knew it is one of the most challenging tracks for me and I can say the challenge has been pretty good.
Nice to met you all, congrats to Tom and my TeamMate Andrea (and also to Roberto  ;) that I don't know why he was so slow during the last few laps tho).

See you at Mexico City and...watch your six...I could be there !  ;)

Really enjoyed the battle with Nicky, sorry it ended the way it did. Not the best night for the Porsche International team. But considering none of us quite finished the race we scored well. Don't worry Juha, Axel, surely one of us will see the chequered flag at Mexico!

Special mention to Roberto V who had the presence of mind to roll over the line, just!!!!!!! and gain another place at my expense, brilliant mate. Oh and apologies to Norbert, I think, for my poor pit lane exit when he was on a flying lap. No harm done I hope, but sorry.

First of all I want to appologize for the mess I caused in Lap 1 after the long straight! :'(

Was in slipstream of the leading pack and Nicky in mine.
I knew cold tyres braking will be critical...
And I messed it!
Under heavy braking with a warm right and cold left front tyre, the Porky went to the right into the gras , crossed the road and stuck in hayballs.
SORRY to all followers that were affected by the follwing "tohuwabohu"  :-[

I recovered with an intact car and managed to catch Norbert and Geoff and finally reached Nicky and Ray fighting for 5th.
Following for two laps with care, as I wanted to finish, Nicky ran wide in that left hander "Frauenkreuz".
I was highly concentrated and did not fully accelerate as usual here.
I really tried to avoid the contact but had no chance as Nicky hit me, crossing the road, when I was on the gras in the left.
A high flying Cookie landed on the roof and like a miracle turned on the wheels again.
Pushing the throttle I had to discover that I had lost 4 cylinders. So I limped to the SF where I decided to end this race.

I had great fear of this track before I began to practice.
The setup was perfect for me and I really felt comfortable on this track.
After finding the groove I love it and will use every opportunity to race here again ;D

Greetings
:chef:

A little disappointed to end my race so early as i enjoy the challenge of Solitude.

The guys on the front of the grid were setting some outrageous times and was not expecting to be racing for a top 3 spot against lap times some 4 secs faster than I could manage!!

I got away reasonably well at the start..I think most drivers had opted for a long 1st gear and no-one shot off the line  ;D. All the cars around me made T1 without any incidents and I was surprised that T3 ( the right hander at the top of the hill) was also clean..nice driving guys ;). I was cautious as we wound our way through the trees towards the straight and left a safe gap to the car in front, which proved to be wise when someone started grass cutting and I was able to make a pass and avoid contact.
I got a nice drive out on to the straight and picked up the slipstream of the car in front. As we approached the braking zone we had closed upon the leading group who were having a battle of their own into the right hander and suddenly there was a couple of cars airborne and spinning at that bend.
I thought I would play safe and go for a wide line through the bend, but one car decided to park itself exactly where I was committed to go. I could not brake any harder and I knew that if I applied any more lock I would just spin and cause even more problems. So I knew what was going to happen at least 2 secs before impact  :-\

I think it was Hristo that had parked against the bales. I had all my wheels on and pulled away from the scene but the Porker was way down on power and I tried to nurse it around until I could see if it was worth dragging it to the end of the race.  But that decision was made for me as I approached the "alien diversion" sign and the engine finally exploded...so I signed up as an alien and parked it amongst the trees  :'(

Grats to Tom and the fast guys and especially to those who made it to the end and some well deserved points.

Forgive me if my words are meaningless, because I am using a translator.
But I would like to apologize if my round in "SS" in the first round hurt someone. Got carried away and tried to walk up my limits.
After another hit, my car was no longer turns on the engine was just 7,500 rpm, until it stopped altogether, and took up the pace and crossed the finish line, pure luck!
I appreciate the words of RoniePeterson, is an encouragement to me that I am starting this wonderful world of gpluk.
 thanks

Pretty nice translator you use...I allways get some blabble with translators.

Nothing interesting in my race...got a great setup from cookie, and it was definetly nice compared to default I use lately... I was still extremely slow, being unable to find this special catch the GT cars have... so i raced with the snails in the grass, which there was plenty of,  and finished 6, because of the amazing luck snails have...probably...

Hm, and when i read what i typed just now, translator text makes more sence... ;D

A great race for me! To be honest, I couldn't do better than yesterday. Tried everything to put some pressure under Tristan, but he was so much faster than me. So the 2nd place was like a victory for me.

Had only one fast lap during the qualy, but was able to put me on 2nd on the grid. Went down to 3rd at the start, but still on the first lap I overtook Arf, after a little mistake of him.

After that, I tried to chase Tristan, but he was incredible fast and didn't make mistakes. I drove all the race over my limit, broke 6 times my record at that track, but there's nothing to do when you're challenging a fantastic driver like Tristan. Thanks man! A perfect race from you, very fast and consistent.

Although Du Fossa was unable to race, it was a great race for Team Coyote, with my 2nd place and a very solid run by Jonny'O, finishing 5th. Great result! Also a special congratulations for the great victory by Tom G at the Server 1 and to my brazilian friend Roberto Vianna, who made a very nice race.

See you all next time! ;)

not a perfect day to our international porche team, Cookie and Ray crashed . I was struggle with this track all the time, last 2 races i raced here with other mod cars i crashed to forests  , that in mind i going to the race and trying to survive. All the race i tried to save engine and dont overrev it, anyway it exploded on its last lap and final corners, sad but luckily lost only one place to Arf Arf Arf, who was driving behind me closely more or less all race distance.

incredible speed 2 front guys Tristan and superfast keyboarder Raoni!   :alien:

grats Tristan for your 2nd Porche cup victory.!!

hope more closer race at Mexico

Tough race that. From the first lap, with my lack of practice and Solitude's characteristics, I was all over the place. With errors and spins aplenty. The first few laps were good fun, but my inconsistency put me in no man's land. After a spin too many the car was behaving in a very strange manner. So much so, that I was an accident waiting to happen. Eventually, I felt the need to call it a day. I apologise to my team for such a poor showing.

A small correction to the official report.  I did not suffer fright, nor loose control of my car under braking.  The problem arose when Jonnie'O, decided to knock on my door for directions, and to wish me a good flight ! :P
