Minis + a short twisty track should make for close interesting racing.

Unfortunately I'll probably miss this one, as I plan to be travelling Thursday evening. Have a good one.

Great fun.

Its great to be back, but christ I was rusty. Blame rustiness for incidents with shark and mark, sorry, and reversing off line in final race ;D. Must have frightened the crap out of you jam, sorry mate.

For me this game just gets better and better.
Great fun in those minis, and love the sound of that Mustang
Getting used now to using the stick shift and clutch and being able to corner with one hand on the wheel while changing up or down ;D  Guess I have just been lazy in the past using the paddles.

Don, I'm not sure meant to shift mid corner, rather be setup in the right gear for the corner. Sometimes its impossible tho.

I would have turned up, but FWD cars are carp, at least the way I drive them

Great fun racing last night, i really enjoyed scrapping with the aliens on several races....not averse to giving a nudge off the track though are you ;)  I think i got nerfed off by just about every alien celebrity driver last night....and got rolled by the mighty Leuven  :o...thats one to tell the grand kids one day ;D
The minis were cool for close tight racing and the racing was fast and furious through the tight infield section, good stuff. 8)
I got several top 5 finishes so was happy with that.

The 'Stangs' were also a laugh but completely crap through the infield, might as well have been towing a caravan ;D  I love the sound of them and broadside power slides but what a handful. I'd hate to do an endurance in one :o

Great fun indeed - in fact I couldn't stop laughing juring the race at the sight of minis bouncing all over the place.

You did seem to get knocked about quite a bit Mark and in fact I got nurfed out of the way twice myself.
I was behind you when you were flipped and for a minute I thought you were going to come back down and  land on my poor little mini  :D

Had a great clean scrap with Truetom in the first race and I had the biggest sideways moment ever seen in a mini at the little hairpin beside the pit entry  :o
I was so sideways that I had to look in the rearview to see where I was going lol.
Look forward to racing you in the NGT sprints Truetom  8)

hmmmm great start to each of the races, went out of every race though through the suspension failure :'(

I'm using stick shift and manual clutch for everything, even GTR. Have found it to be a lot easier than I first thought

Great close racing with the mini's. I watched that battle in the first race between truetom and mo after missing the start  :'(  Mo really was driving that mini just like the boys from the Italian job, couldn't believe how he managed to not lose any time and keep going after that sideways moment  :o Found the mini's were less fun to drive than the mustang's but cus the racing was so close they was just as good to race  :)

Of course you can shift mid corner!

Yeh, but its hard to keep constant weight on different areas of the car while shifting, less so on the way down when your blipping as your force is coursed by braking and your only blipping to stop the wheels locking. On the way up on the exit, your going to have to move your foot from the accelerator (or even in GTR the autoclutch will disable the power), which causes a nasty balance destructive weight shift. Much better to get it sorted before hand, or at least place shifts no-where-near the apex. Of course its not always possible (that first complex @ Magny sprints to mind as being impossible to do without shifting).

So yes you can, but in my opinion, best to try and avoid.

Hmmm, I understand where you're coming from but, I think, in the heat of it, the car weight it shifting around all the time anyway. Whether that's because I'm trail braking, or have the accelerator slightly pressed on entry, or whether because I'm backing off the throttle mid corner to let the coast kick in and point the nose or shifting as I accelerate out. You can't mean you only change gear in a straight line so, essentially, I suspect you do all that too!

For sure mid-corner I had to whack it up from 2nd to 3rd round that short track and in the mini.

In GTR I kinda ignore it, as the shifts are quick, and the auto blip / clutch is very good. In GTL and rF I actively try and avoid shifting mid corner, at least till a point when it's mostly completed.

I just noticed that we're in the mini thread tho, LOL I don't think it makes no diff with a mini :-)

the problem i was having in the mini, was we going all the way up 'that' hill, and then round the right hander hairpin by the pit entrance, i would go round fine, but accelerating out, when i shift from 1 into 2 the revs just died :(

on gear 1 corners i usually enter in 2 apex in 1 and then accelerate away as normal though

Hi all I would like to point out that its almost impossible to get a racing mini or any other gear box of the A series into first whilst moving owing to the design. If one even grates the change it damages the engagement dogs and after that its had it. If any one was down in ist it is not very realistic. In my opinion the car does not drive anything like a race mini . The ones I drove and fiesta's come to that if the power is taken off in a corner they spin like a top . I was crap the car is nothing like I expected so will leave it alone.merry seasons wishes. gerald

Quite interested Gerald, Thanks. Can I ask, how you'd change gear in such a car, or any other race cars you've been in/worked on.

Hi Mate the ford bullet box has syncro on first so you can get that gear as per a modern car. The really powerfull Aseries cars with an 8 port head were somtimes fitted with a toyota gearbox as a coversion bell houseing was available. The old mini , midget , sprite, A series engines were a long stroke engine giving loads of tourque at moderate revs. The mini in GT tune probably had to use a fairly standard crank and rods and would have pulled from about 2,000 rpm up to 6,800 ,owing to its poor breathing with siameesed inlet and centre exhaust port it just cannot move enough air or get really big valves in the combustion chambers due to their bath tub design. My own A series as per the midget on my web site is a different case as it was not controlled by any homologation contsraints. The block was an end of production Ital selected for its cylinder wall thickness by my engine building mate so it could be bored out big to get 1400cc .the cam is timed at differnt open and shut timing for each cylinder to allow for the porting. The chain drive was binned and belt timing fitted. The cylinder head would take about a fortnight to prepare as the valves are offset to get big inlets in. the ports are bored out entirely round, any holes being brazed up or a sleeve fitted. the push rod holes drilled at different angles as are the block. It has a steel crank with steel rods but this has a shorter stroke as per the 1071 cooper s .The engine is dry sumped with massive oil cooling (something of a weaknes on the mini as the egine and gearbox use the same oil). My midget put out 140 bhp at the wheels( so I dont belive the GTL 140 bhp) it pulled from 3.500revs up to 10,000 . It would run on to 11,000 but no extra power. In short we had to alter the gear ratio to suit the track as first was not an option for tight corners. It would spin 10" wide slicks in 3rd as it only wieghed 8cwt so going round druids at brands was 2nd gear, I needed the top end at the end of the straight going into paddock as well as big b**lls. The whole point of my gripe is that the mini in gtl drives like a road car on 5.20 *10 crossplies and it would not like being crammed into 1st. If the clutch was used there was a good chance of that blowing up as they are marginal on the mini anyway.bye for now. gerald

Thanks again

Gerald, you said you had an end of line Ital engine. I take it you mean the Ital that took over from the Marina. That being the case my first car was an end of line Marina that was fitted with the "new" Ital 1700 as they had ran out of the Marina engines by that point. For the record that used to go quite well, for its day.

Yes that was the ohc engine  of bl's later series of cars before honda. That engine was quite good but got a bad reputation pulling the sherpa along.

Yes, found it didn't like getting over heated though, had to have mine skimmed in the end

P.S. the marina was absolutely terrible for prop slap, could hear me engage 1st from 200 yrds lol

They used the triumph hearald gearbox on the marina. The first production cars all shear the reverse selctor pin within a week and had to be modded. We did not use this box as it was to heavy compared to the all ally A series box . I was very sad when the allegro sd1 marina ital etc left the world as we made good money repairing them. bye for now gerald

You know something Gerald? It's only now thinking back I realise how good that Marina/Ital engine was for it's day, used to be able to leave most of my mates in their  mk II escorts for dead from a standing start  ;D
