Title: UKGPL Season 21 (2011) Specs - Mexico City (1962-1979) - Jul 22
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on July 17, 2011, 02:09:35 PM +0100
Hola Amigos! Spec Racing is off to Mexico for Round 6 to see who will be crowned Speedy Gonzales. It’s the original Papyrus track but this time we are using 66 cars – although Bernie will probably practice with something else.

The last race at Monza highlighted a bit of an issue with Shift R / Reset. The proper rules are:
In the Spec Series Resets are unlimited, but
Every Reset must be followed by a Stop & Go (except the last lap where a time penalty of 30 seconds is applied). It should be taken on the next lap.
Deliberate failure to take a Stop & Go will result in a Disqualification.
Appreciated the DQ may be news to some & some discretion may be allowed by the Moderator. Specifically for the Monza 10K race there will be time penalties but the full rules will apply going forward.

Your choice of chariot is the 3.0L Eagle TG1 & the McLaren M2.

Our winners last time out were Evil Clive & Sam Blood. This puts Evil at the top of the championship table followed by Natan & Hristo.

Spec Racing the format is a little different from other divisions. There will be two Intermediate Short Races, back to back on the same track. For each event there are two chassis available and you should drive both cars - anyone daft enough to use the same car will be disqualified for Race 2. Start with whichever chassis you like.
There is no handicapping all participants will run in one division.

Unlimited resets are allowed but every Shift R must be followed by a Stop & Go in the pit lane. If you Reset on the last lap a 30 second time penalty will be awarded.
Incidents should be reported in the usual way.
In line with other divisions the races will be subject to full moderation on lap one.

Also please note that qualifying runs are limited to 15 minutes – the clocks starts ticking when the server goes up so doesn’t wait around.

Hugely woeful and I had some weird stuff going on that meant the engine didn't sound right and it is surprising how important the aural feedback is. Actually enjoyed the race I did but really showed the lack of practice. See you all Sunday.

Results & replays now posted.

I have only driven the 66 cars a handful of times - probably time to call it a day as I just couldn't get to grips with them.

Congratulations to Evil - first driver ever to have keep Hristo off the top step of the podium in two consecutive Spec Races. H did start Race 2 from the back of the grid - but credit where credit is due.

Will be on my hols for the next race so will need to find another Mod to start you off at Spa. Will be back for another dose of humility at Hockenheim.

Race 1*, Billy. And yes, grats to Evil, he totally deserved both wins with the pace and consistency he showed!

Race 1.....good  start, cautious approach to T1-2 as usual as it's a stack trap. Aulden stopped, nearly dead when the track was clear enough to go round the accident site and the unsueing concertina put me on my roof. Reset, got going and got as far as the hairpin where Paul made a very late decision to attempt a pass up the inside....whamo, again....after the s.n.g I was well and truly last. Chased a few down, one was Bill. Worked hard to catch him and set him up for a pass along the back straight, executed the pass then Bill had a brain fade moment....and although I left him plenty of room up the inside if he wanted to dispute the corner, poor Bill still managed to whack me onto my side against the armco, but luckily there was no further damage, it dropped onto 4 wheels and we continued. Had the odd dice but was never gonna trouble the midfielders, enjoyed the rest of the race and enjoyed driving the McLaren.

Race 2....Quallied up the field in 8th for a change with a last lap PB. Fair start, outdragged some MCL,s to turn 1, then eased off as the cars ahead started to come back to me. Natan on my right side and Axel on my left we were 3 abreast across the track at one point. However, when I eased off Natan didn't. I made a point of holding my line....Natan didn't. He hit me as he drifted off the white line inboard and the billiards-style cannon off him and into Axel put both of us over the fence, me upside down. Reset, and set off again, passing some spinners on the exit of T2. Followed Bernie down to the hairpin and saw him lose it on the way in and park on the infield. Having seen what was going on, I left him room to extricate himself by running around the outside. However, Bernie managed to free his Eagle right in front of mine, then hammered mine into the fence. It wasn't the same after that.......a bit nervy and a little unstable but still managed to get down to 54's for the last few laps. Wasn't too bad after the tyres warmed up. Better finishing possie, but should have finished further up the field.
One of these days I may complete a race without getting caught up in someone elses accident.
Enjoyed both cars and had some fun in the process. Congrats to the podium Wallahs in both races.

First race at Mexico and first touch with 66s.
Not an easy situation as these cars are strange behaving.
No power at low revs and a big boost when they get it.
Driving behaviour is near the 65s but with this engine characteristics its allways driving on the edge.
This mod will remain long untouched in my GPL archive...

The races began both with a pretty good start.
With the Eagle in first race. I did some mistakes and finaly the engine exploded in the last lap.
The McLarens start just ended in T1 when Geoff was kicked into me.
After some mistakes I ran in 13th, til my empty tank ended my race with 2 laps to go, even though I had filled it for 11 laps     >:(
Not a happy :chef:

I have been trying to win a 66 race with the 3 litre Eagle ever since the mod was released.  There have been a few "alomost" moments but usually Hristo thwarts my plans by driving his ultra quick Mclaren on to the top step of the podium. :-\

When qualli started for the 1st race there was no sign of Hristo and I knew that I had a pretty quick setup in my Eagle, so maybe this would be the race where the Eagle triumphed ;) Sam and Goran posted some quick lap times but I felt quite comfy on race fuel and was able to take pole position without running a qualifying setup. It was then that I noticed Hristo's name at the back of the grid!!

Hristo was , I knew from previous experience, able to run sub 1:50 laps around Mexico and my best was a low 1:51 so I knew he would be catching me as the race progressed. But in my favour he would have to pass the entire field to get to me and it was a short race ;)
Things did not go quite so well at the start and I was jumped on the run down to T1...not part of my plan!! I think it was Goran who had launched himself into the lead and I had to follow him for the 1st lap. This was probably a good thing as I was able to let my tyres warm up before pushing hard. Once past Goran I put in a banzai lap to try and break the slipstream before the long straight and managed to get just far enough in front. Another lap and the gap behind had grown and I was able to concentrate on keeping a fast pace whilst watching Prib for early signs of Hristo and his Mclaren.
I think Hristo's name showed when the race was at half way and he had made up quite a bit of ground but was still approx half a lap down , that should be enough I thought. Goran and Sam were still keeping a good pace behind and one big mistake would have them right on my tail pipes again, so I had to keep things fast but safe. In the end I was able to ease off on the last lap and follow Billy across the line rather than try and lap him on the final bend, which would have been risky  ;)

The second race was sure to be different as I now had to drive the Mclaren which I have hardly used in the past, but Hristo had the Eagle, a car which I know is not his favourite. This was going to be interesting.
In a sly move to handicap Hristo I offered him my race 1 Eagle setup..(.hehehehe he'll never be able to drive that  :shifty:) and he didn't, he changed it!!

I don't know about you guys but I found an immense difference between the Eagle and the Mclaren. The Eagle seems to have more power but I find I have to force the rear to break away slightly in bends to get the nose in and then balance on the gas until I can nail the exit. Whereas the Mclaren seems more docile, but turns in easier and can be held in a controlled drift through the corners and actually carry slightly more speed through the apex.

I was pipped for pole in the 2nd race by a last gasp effort from guess who!!?? Not unexpected but it did not do my chances of a 2nd win any great favours.
At the start Hristo got the Eagle well and truly bogged down and I discovered very quickly how ruddy useless the mirrors are on the Mclaren!! Once I had passed Hristo I just spotted  a car move up alongside my left wheels on the run to T1 a quick glance at Prib showed Natan was within 5 metres on my right!!  I could hear both cars but could not see either of them!! as we entered T1  :scared:

On cold tyres and full fuel I was fully expecting contact with someone or something!! I tried to keep my car as close to the middle line as I could. There were engine noises all around but I could see no-one. T1 was OK but now we were approaching those tight Esses!! and there is no way you can go 3 abreast through there!! Once again I tried to keep a central line, held my breath and hoped.

The track opened up and I was still untouched and in 1st place...Phew!! ;D but now I could see cars in both mirrors and with that someone dived up the inside to T3.. Rats!!.
I think it was Sam who had pounced so I had to follow him for the lap until I was able to use the slipstream on the straight and draft past into a much less congested T1 on lap 2. Hristo was held up for a while behind Sam and Goran and I tried to put some daylight between us. But he was soon past and chasing me down. The gap close even more when I made a small mistake at the hairpin and brushed the armco. As a result Hristo was in my slipstream as we reached the straight and comfortably drafted past. Watching the replay shows him waving and looking at me as he went past!! :alien: ( ruddy showoff!!) but then my disappointment turned to chuckles as H outbraked himself into T1 and ran wide and up against the armco. 8).

I held a tight line and shot through. Now the problem was that once again I could HEAR an Eagle, but I could not SEE an Eagle.
Had Hristo recovered quickly from his scrape of the armco?? was he alongside me??? So I tried, as much as possible, to hold my drifting Mclaren tight to the right of the Esses and leave him room. That meant that my exit onto the next straight was totally screwed and where I was normally feeding on the gas as I took turned into the last left hander so that by the time the engine got into the power band I was on to the straight, now I could not put my foot down because I was running well wide of that apex and the corner was just too tight.
When I did nail the gas,  the lag in power seemed to take forever before I got any acceleration and I then caught a flash of Hristo's Eagle in my mirror as he disappeared again to my leaft and thought he was going for a pass up the inside into the next left. Instead his engine note died and a quick glance at Prib showed a gap that was growing??? Had he blown his engine?? I was so distracted that I almost did not make the next laft right and just kept it on the tarmac.
From then on I had a comfy lead and could monitor the chasing cars as I rounded the hairpin and saw them on the approach. Hristo recovered from what was apparently a spin to avoid my slow Mclaren but never got close enough again to challenge.
2 races..2 wins  and a race win for the 66 Eagle at last !! ;D  well chuffed!!
Grats to the podium guys and now I have to brace myself for Hristo's revenge at the next race.  :-\

Goodness those races were hard work. I spent race one fighting the Eagle, holding onto 2nd for a while, fighting with Goran and Fulvio but made a mistake with a couple of laps to go and got demoted to 5th.

The second race was better. I made possibly the best start of my GPL career to vault up from 5th to 1st on the opening lap. Having said that, it was clear Evil and H were faster, and Clive obliged by overtaking me on the 2nd lap, with H passing me soon after. After that, it was a matter of holding station in 3rd though with H running out of fuel on the last lap, I was promoted to a lucky 2nd. Reasonably pleased with the results. Congrats to Clive with a fine double victory.

Both races were quite enjoyable, despite not winning either. I forgot about the event and just managed to join race 1 when it was mutating. I picked up the McLaren as I knew it better, but I had no setup and copied over the one from Monsanto. As it turned out, the gearing didn't really suit the track, especially 1st for being too long and 5th too short. My wheel was also not calibrated, so to go straight I had to keep it turned about 20 degrees to the left.

Despite those issues, it was interesting to start from the back and make my way through the field. I couldn't see the green flag at all as my car was some hundred meters back into the last corner and even when those in front of me began to move, I wasn't sure if I should start as I didn't want to risk a false start. I probably lost 3-4 seconds just there.

Lap 1 was a bit hectic, with people going left and right, and there were a couple of contacts at the end of T1, but I managed to continue relatively quick and put about half of the field behind me. Still fighting with the car and my wheel, it was not so easy to make up positions and that obviously allowed Evil to pull away a comfortable gap while I was busy fighting those in front of me. There were some particularly good fights with people whose names I don't know because the pit board kept changing all the time and I didn't even have the time to look at it on half of the laps. Still pleased to have made it up to 2nd despite all the handicaps.

Race 2 was an up and down scenario, not the least because I had to drive the Eagle which I don't really like - it understeers so much and just snaps instead of drifting gradually. With Evil's help for the setup, it didn't take much to come up with settings I felt fairly comfortable with, so I just managed to snatch pole at the end of the session. The start wasn't so good though and Evil managed to go in front as we entered T1.

He was 100% in front by the time we reached the slow chicane at the end of T1, but he still kept the outside line and went very slowly, obviously not aware that he had clear track on the right, so we all had to slow down and bunch up behind him. I lost more positions as the Eagle was handling oddly on cold tires and I couldn't quite hear its engine amongst all cars around me, so I dropped to 4th or so at the end of lap 1.

It began to improve from there on though, and within a couple of laps I was back in 2nd and chased Evil down. He was very fast, especially in the 2nd half of the lap, so it wasn't that easy to close up on him, let alone make an attack. With the help of 66s extreme slipstream though, I finally managed to pass him on the main straight, waving as we went side by side and looking to the left to see where he is, but as a result I forgot to brake on time for T1. Almost managed to catch it, but it wasn't enough and the car slammed into the armco, then slid along until I slowed down enough to detach myself from it.

By then Evil was already in front and even had a bit of a margin, but apparently again he was not aware where I was and suddenly he slowed down a lot in the chicane after T1. That caught me out by surprise and as I had to take the inside line at a lower speed, the acceleration spun me around to the left and dropped me behind Sam. This was with 4 laps to go, so my chances for victory were now over.

It took 2 laps to reel in and pass Sam, but just as we entered the last lap, my fuel pressure dropped under 100 kpa and the engine began to lose power, so I had to do some extreme low revs driving through most of the final lap in order to make it to the finish. The car switched off completely just after I crossed the line, so I guess that was a very good timing.  ;D 3rd place, considering the circumstances, was still a good result, but I see that Evil has now opened up quite a gap in the championship standings.

Grats to Evil for well deserved victories and for therefore pleasing Mrs. Fujikawa, especially with the 1-2 Waza victory of race 1!

Reset, got going and got as far as the hairpin where Paul made a very late decision to attempt a pass up the inside....whamo, again....

Major apologies mate. Bit hairy on the brakes and from my POV you were wide and I thought I had enough room to go in tight as I was doing zero miles per hour. Didn't feel a thing and thought it was clean. Disappointed it wasn't. I'll take a look.

Got disconnected twice during qualifying in race 1, unfortunately the second disconnect was right at the end so I missed the race! My connection returned for race 2 so at least the evening was not a complete right off. Fortunate to hold off a fast charging Natan but happy with the result.

Large element of warp here too I think Paul....didn't cause me too much concern actually.

Just seen replay of race 1 and noted the T1 lap 1 contact with Natan that I wasn't aware during the race cause I didn't feel anything. Sorry Natan I tried to keep well inside but lag didn't help.

OK, so how do I appeal to this? Because I never received a PM that I'm involved in an incident report, nor I even remember hitting anyone in that race!  ::)

PM to Vosblod, H. It came under Lap 1 moderation. I think that is why you didn't get notification.
