Anyone around later this evening for a quick test of the weight ballast system?

I want to find out whether the weight is applied as drivers join or when the game moves to the next session as it will have implications for quali.

Shout up here if you're available and I'll give you 5Kgs test ballast if you're not one of those due to carry ballast this race.

Thanks for the help chaps  8)

Ballast seems to be working ok which means that drivers will carry their extra weight for quali and race.

Enjoyed that.
Despite being a very diferent track to Hock'88, all I changed setup wise was wy wings & gear ratios 8)

Guys, as we're running ballast now is there anyway of having the server running Monday nights? I know there is normally a GTL race, but its pointless us working on setups if the ballast isn't on the car, also as I noticed it does alter the braking points more than expected

Good question. I believe this was because there were problems with capacity in the past and it was decided to shut down all other sessions on our server to try to minimise problems with races, but I'm wondering if this is still the case  :-\

ATM Fridays and Saturdays are the only evenings available for practice across all events which is not ideal. By 22:00 most evenings the practice servers are up again so I guess we have to make do with this  :-\

It is a shame because Mondays were becoming an unofficial practice night for F1 with more drivers online than we get at some events. As you say Jamera, for those with ballast online practice is the only way.

I would also question the long first practise session which i thought was initially introduced to reduce the issues of loads of drivers joining at once. Yes, its clear GTL has gain some momentum with drivers and is probably the highest attendance but its not quite like the good-old days ( now where have i heard that before...) Not trying to pick on GTL but now running ballast we do need the F1 server even more for practise!

Dallara is a pretty unuseful car even here :(

I was capable to do only a 1.30 in it... with a bit more training probably I could go down to a 1.29 low/28 high maybe...

Than I took on loan Lazlow's Minardi to check if was me unable to drive in this circuit or a car issue, and I discovered that I was on a 1.24 pace in it.
I have to find some kind of "cheat" to let this boneshaker go a bit more  >:( >:(... Tomorrow I will check the qualif laptimes, and if I'm too slow to compete with at least one driver, I will give up for this one. I really dislike the idea to be lapped after 20 mins race.
I guess that in this mod the slower cars are very distant from the top cars... even if in Hockenheim won a Coloni... and this left me only a little bit puzzled  :o :o

Cu  ;)

Lazlow was flying last night even with the ballast!
Did a few 1.27/8's last night in Williams
Very tricky track to learn.... if you havn't tried it yet!.. get on the server as early as poss! :)

The Minardi is certainly quick here (makes a change ;)), but the tyre wear is huge. Looks like I will need to do 3 stops in the race if I want to be quick on every lap.

Post by: goldtop on August 02, 2011, 09:29:14 AM +0100
Yes tyre wear is unusually high here (a bit like it was in RL this weekend).

I reckon I can probably get away with a one stop if I drive very smoothly and go for a conservative setup. This will mean that my times will be around 1:28/1:29 and fall off by a couple of seconds later in my stints. My absolute best time so far with race fuel is a 1:27.3 so I don't think I'll be winning any prizes this week.

For anyone who feels they might be struggling with pace, I would still encourage them to race as I am positive they will have others to race with (which is what it's all about). Being such a technical track, I'm sure there will also be plenty of opportunities as drivers fall off.

It will be a long race this evening and I hope my pc and myself are up to it  :o

Not tried this one yet. what is a ball park wing setting?
I tend to - particularly in the wayward Arrows - have the rear
higher than the front, but some guidance would save me
hours of testing.

ta
Matt.
I have the higher wing possible at the front, and 2 click less on the rear. It helps me a lot to have a bit of oversteer when I accelerate out of the corners especially in the 2nd sector. However the higher wing value for Dallara is 30 (so I'm driving 30 front and 28 rear), and yesterday with the Minardi I was on 50 front - 48 rear.
This is my Minardi setup if you want to give a try, apply it to the Arrows and see if it's good for you:http://www.humyo.com/FCrSYMC/DallaraF1.svm?a=9o8qeFYVWR8 (http://www.humyo.com/FCrSYMC/DallaraF1.svm?a=9o8qeFYVWR8)
However I went down to 1.26.777 as best lap, and that means that would be safer if I drive on a pace near to a mid/high 27. So my forecasts were wrong about my worries of having no drivers to fight against ;)
Cu later :)

My wing settings are also 30/28.

I'm having big problems with my graphics card atm (another one will be with me tomorrow) but it means that I might have to miss out on this race. I'm having big flickers going to black screens in 2d so it might even be tricky setting up the server this evening.

If worst comes to worst and I'm not able to do so, if someone could restart both the server and then GTR2 Manager. It's all set up so nothing else to do, but hopefully it won't come to that  :-\

I will be in the race so will do server start if required no worries.
Thanks for the setup advice Matteo and GT
I forgot this is like Monaco, so loadsa wing
I may still end up with the rear 2 or 3 clicks higher because my
fast in slow out style means I lose the rear into corners for fun
in Rear engine cars.

thanks gt that did work for the tarmac  :)

only started practising today and couldn't believe my quali time for 6th... which finally came after many offs  ::)

ran wide on lap 1 on T6 (?) and couldn't rejoin without wiping someone out so had to keep driving along the inside of the corner rejoining last  :-[ and then on lap 2 i had an unavoidable accident with a spun car in the middle of T2...

on the plus side it can only get better next race

Another retire for me...
I was too angry after I missed the pit crew and I had to do 2 pit stop.
Chasing GT after the "succesful" pit I spun at the fast chicane of the 3rd sector... race over...

I think the next time I should race with no sounds in TS, cause I lose concentration with all the VDA guys saying too much nonsense  ;D ;D

However it was quite a boring race after I realized I couldn't keep Legzy's pace, but without missing the pit crew the race could have been different... as ever... we'll never know it...

Sorry for a couple of slightly tap to Legzy, and for my manouvre when lapping H@l... fortunately he was able to control his car, but it was really a bad move. Sorry again guys  :(
Cu :)

a good race for me, only one spin, very hard to keep concentration in the last 10 laps

starting to feel a bit more comfortable following people closely in these very fast and fragile F1's

only cock up for me was having to make a second pitstop for fuel, i had originally planned to make 2 pit stops because of tye wear, but as i approched my first pitstop i realised everyone was doing a 1 stopper so changed my strategy to 1 stop and tried calculating the new fuel amount while driving around and got it wrong and didnt put enough in  :(

Me too, last few nights been getting random black screens for about half a second (maybe less, seems more  :o)
Had it happen during the race when trying to rejoin after a worn tire spin, apologies to whoever it was I nearly clipped
Doesn't help that the card I'm running is only a GT240, runs with everything maxed DOWN lol, but I guess constant stress from GTR2 and Race07 have taken their toll

All being well got a nice new shiny GTX 560 Ti arriving tomorrow

Well, I feel like a prize idiot after that performance. The March was a dream to drive, I was surprisingly competitive though that was probably due to a lack of ballast. I qualified 2nd, harried Jubei for a while, passed him and was leading for about 10 laps. Then came lap 14, when I made the schoolboy error of applying too much power out the chicane. That mistake forced me into the gravel and I found myself beached  :-\. I stalled the engine trying to get out, red faced after going so well beforehand. Always next race I suppose.

1st race on a track with corners, and the Arrows performed well. Quite high front tyre wear with my setup
but I can't drive a loose setup with this beast, so has to be. Had someone to race most of the time
I was a bit faster than Legzy and Martin with fresh tyres and a bit slower with worn ones
I was right up behind Jubei at one point but then did something silly somewhere and dropped back
tried to follow Martin up to the end, but didn't quite have the pace.
Good racing.

Morning guys...

Shame you can't see me skipping round the office this morning!!  ;D
Really pleased with second!
Sounded like tyre wear might be an issue so did a long run in practice to test a one stop strategy and all looked good!
Kept it all clean, made no errors! and was surprised not to be caught in the later third of the race.
Even managed to do my pit stop without issue! Although it sounds like I was very slow at that!
So slow that I came out in front of Legzy!! :)
Tyres were a struggle for the last two laps but was not under pressure so dropped the pace off.

Thanks to all those who moved over for me when being lapped! Not sure I would have been so observant!

Thanks all, great fun / race

I feel like an idiot too after last night's race. I qualified well, managing to avoid spinning, then come the race start, I spin at the hairpin and lose one place. Then on the second lap I spin again at turn 2, which I haven't done all the way through practice and qualifying. Unlike Lewis I don't manage to recover without hitting someone. I waited until I thought everyone had gone through, but Purdie came round just as I moved off. Sorry Purdie... Then, trying to get back to the pits I get beached on exactly the same spot as Samb will on lap 14. Ah well. See you guys on the 23rd.

A very enjoyable night's racing. Don't know how you guys remember so much detail in your race reports, my brain was filled to capacity just coping with the race let alone storing it for later recall.

I paced myself gaining places as others made mistakes and managed to keep my tyres in good shape for when I needed to call on them. Had a nice little battle with Manteos, which was just about to get very intense when he lost it... a relief but also a shame as it would have been very close.

After my pitstop and with about 10 to go I was in 5th but being reeled in by Spanner. In my desperation to get the power down, I spun it coming out of the penultimate turn, my first real mistake of the race. That unsettled my concentration and I had a couple of scrappy laps including another spin at the Lewis chicane  :wetfish:

Overall very pleased with 6th and still enjoying the challenge that is the luvverly EuroBrun  :)

I have no issue with it, but how is this ballast worked out? why does Legzy get 60 me 40 and Martin B 50
when Martin finished in front of myself and Legzy, and I got the fastest lap of the 3 of us.... ???
And did I have ballast in that race already?

I'm trying to remember what TT said the other day  :-\

Ah that's it, RTFM   ;)

Actually it's in post #1 here......

https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=9693.msg175935

The relevant bit....

WEIGHT/SUCCESS BALLAST:

1st   60kg
2nd  50kg
3rd  40kg
4th  30kg
5th  20kg
6th  10kg

Weight ballast is cumulative up to a maximum of 120kg. Weight will be added based on drivers' finishing positions in the previous two rounds they have taken part in.

What a tough track this was. Almost no time to rest at all. In practice I got to a 1:28 lap pretty quick in practice but then seemed to hit a plateau that was hard to break through after that. Seemed to be stuck in the 28's until late into final practice when I was finally able to break through into the 26's. Problem was everyone else got faster too. For the race I was at least comfortable enough to think that I would be able to make it without too much trouble and hoped that just finishing without any spins would result a good finish. Had some good dices with Tom and Manteos for a short bit. After around 11 laps I was on my own for awhile when I noticed someone coming fast. Not sure what problem he had to be back there but I wasn't planning on putting up too much of a fight because I knew he would be much faster. Unfortunately that was not too be as when getting through turn ten I was just barely tapped unintentionally. Problem was it was one of those moments when the car was right on edge so the small tap sent me into the wall which knocked both front and rear wings off. I went to the pits and tried to get the damage fixed but after waiting forever and at least a full minute behind the next to last runner Jamera I decided I had enough of this track.

Yea sorry about that Navin :-[ I find it really hard driving close behind people with this mod because the cars are always dancing about in front of me and I always seem to get lag when I'm up close. I know it's no consolation, and I'm sorry for the tap.

I went for a 2 stop strategy last night which put me out of sync with everyone else, which wasn't the right call. Trying to get past slower people after my first stop was a challenge to say the least...all though it was fun 8)

Next time I need to try and drive a more conservative race....shame, because I love throwing these cars around.

Don't give it another thought Lazlow 8). I've very fortunate for a long time in that "racing deal" thing. To be honest I was on an opposite strategy trying to see how far I could go on the hard tires with maybe one stop late for softs. So I was rather slow at that point being still heavy on fuel and just getting some unwanted understeer at that point with the hard tires. One of those things when 2 strats merge at the wrong time/place etc. We'll get'em next time ;)

I had a high tyre wear myself and the car was undrivable after just a few laps. Or maybe I was impatient and was driving too hard into the corners. Or maybe this is the result of the "success" ballast. Anyway, had to go for the 2 stopper but saw I was gonna get behind everybody after the 2nd stop so I tried to hang in. Bad decision, couldn't hold the pace and started making mistakes and damaged the car. Didn't have the will to drag to the pits and start over from the back. :-\

I was really slow again, Doh!

I think I need to start trying out the other cars I am allowed.

No worries for the tap Manteos, I had to let lots of people past, it was difficult to judge and I ended up on the inside line while you were passing. Can you keep your forum posts young person friendly please Manteos? Legzy had to edit one of your posts.

The race was really hard work for me despite having no one to race. I was a right state at the end of that. :sweatdrop: ;D
