Race 9 Oulton Park

The penultimate race of the season is at Oulton Park situated near the small village of Little Budworth, Cheshire.  This is quite a narrow track with some long straights and difficult braking areas.  Turn 1 (Old Hall) will be busy on lap 1. There isn't a lot of room and anyone hitting the advertising hoardings on the outside will probably bounce back onto the track so please be careful.  The circuit occupies much of the area which was previously the Oulton Estate. The track is set in the grounds of Oulton Hall.

The circuit was originally developed by the Mid-Cheshire Car Club, with the track attracting crowds of 40,000 during the 1950s. Oulton Park regularly hosted the International Gold Cup event which attracted many Formula One teams (Stirling Moss won it 5 times), but as the F1 calendar shrank to include only Grand Prix events, the Cup became less well-known.  The track is characterised by its rapidly changing gradients and blind crests leading into unforgiving corners. Among many British and foreign drivers it is considered one of the most challenging and thrilling circuits ever constructed.

Reserve drivers should not join the server until there are only 30 minutes of qualifying left so as to give the FULL TIME drivers chance to join, and drivers are not to go out on track until there are 30 minutes of qualifying left as this helps all drivers join the server successfully.

Please restrict chat to pit messages if necessary, and this includes the end of the race, until all running drivers have completed the necessary laps.

The Novice races are run under Int Long rules and all incidents will be moderated.

Is the pratice server on? Its just that I can't find in on iGOR and I wanted to check I had got the correct cars set and track

We are without an official Server this week.  I saw no-one on Cookie's Server earlier, so his private session has ended ATM.  This suggests drivers for the race are already good, or might still be bad later! ;D

I've got to get into my loft to get the server running.

What - you keep your servants in the loft?  I say old chap, seems a bit old fashioned ! :euro:

My sever lives in the living room and was my multimedia center til I stripped it to the essentials ;D

Paul it would be nice to get the track.ini file for a wide grid, or if you have it, the tool for making it ::)

Cookie. I have a 1 x 1 staggered grid setup and it is OK except that positions, 15, 17, 18 and 19 cannot see the flag. Oddly 16 can just see it. They will catch up into T1 anyway.

As you can see UKGPL3 is back...

I will start the server tonight and there is a nice loose grid. The last few places cannot see the flag but you will catch up into T1 and T2.

Please be careful, especially into T2 as it can easily catch you out.

Here's a note with links I produced re loose grids;
i) Loose Grids
To avoid (or minimise) the chances of a crash fest at the start of a race we use loose online grids. It is the Divisional Moderators responsibility to ensure a loose grid is in place for their races. Where it is an add-on and/or we are doing a fun race you may have to make one from scratch.
For the common tracks they are already out there (we tend to use Paul Jacksons). There are various utilities to help you but I happen to find the GPL Grid maker spreadsheet the best for me.
So to produce a loose grid do this;
1) Take a back-up copy of the default track.ini (in case it all goes pear shaped) (located in Sierra/GPL/tracks)
2) Type the data from the track.ini starting grid info into the GPL Grid Maker excel spreadsheet
3) Select 1x1
4) Play with the spacing
5) Paste/replace the starting grid data into the current track.ini (I change the text to 1x1 Vosblod staggered - just so anyone looking will know)
6) Save the updated track.ini
7) Go into GPL and do a full AI qually/race start on accelerated time
8 ) Once the cars take off escape out and review the grid both in car and overhead from each car - make sure the back guy can see the flag / cars are as spaced as possible / cars not too near the edge
9) Make a note of any errors / changes needed and repeat steps (4) to (8 ) until you get it right.

Have a look at the track.ini format - it is pretty easy to set any grid you like. The grid positions are basically just offsets from position 1.

Didn't start the race as I had a visitor at the house with 5 minutes of pratice left, was too late to join the race. Hope you all had a good race guys.

Missed you mate. Fun race with plenty of spills and thrills. Too many spins for me though - when I kept it straight I was competitive but I spun at least ten times. Frustrating and disappointing. Shows I've moved on though as I am now disappointed to be lapped.

Well done the podium & particularly Rog. Rog started novices about the same time as I did & to be honest I'm getting tired of finishing lower than he does ;)
A pre race race, with B Blood & Cookie convinced me all was not well. Gearing adjusted & its sorted for a nice 4th place qually. In the race after lap 1 turn 3 I was convinced I need a lesson in defensive driving as a bump put me well down the field :(. There followed too many incidents & near misses to mention but somehow the BT7 kept going. Finally got my defensive driving lesson on the last lap courtesy of one J Blito who blasted out of the pits right in front of me, but was so slow through turn 2 I went off avoiding him & dropped a place to Venn, aka Rotaxmax's Honda.
Enjoyable race though. ;D

Talked to Norm before the race and he opined that it was a matter of not getting lapped :(

He achieved that but I didn't. You are my aim now Norm! I want to be racing you, Jason and Al regularly. Al is usually not a problem because his wife turns off his internet with 5 to go...

Meant to ask. Anyone have any connectivity issues. Saw a few discos. Server OK for continued use next year if we do go three divisions?

Sorry to Sky, whose leading position was torpedoed when I met his rear into ESSO bend on lap 3.
I reported it!

With some training I finaly found the groove of this track.
In quali I was surprised by the excellent times done by Sky, Rog and Norm, so I had to go out again and do a real hot lap   ::)

Starting from pole, I could only hold my lead until Druids corner where Sky caught me. I followed him close til this incident in lap 3.
Rog could pass there and kept the lead to  the finish line.
I was faster, but when I nearly reached him I hit the bush inside Druids corner, that brought me behind Hendy.
We had a nice battle til Hendy did his mistake, so I was able to keep my 2nd position to the finish line.

This result is wrong. I was in sixth place until eight laps to go. Suddenly the pribluda started to give completely wrong information about the race. I finished the race in 6th, not 11th.

Thanks DF. I'll take a look and put it right. It may be a few days though.

Somehow, DF got out of synch with the server... I noticed he effectively lost a lap from somehow, dropping from 6th to 11th without actually going off etc...

As for my race.. well, I was a little wild out there! I had potential for some cracking pace but somehow I just couldnt hold it together and made one mistake after the other... the only good thing about my race was terrorizing Norm whilst passing him.... and spinning....and passing him..... and spinning..and.... well you get the idea :D
I must saw I was mighty proud of my last lap pit exit... I came out of the pits knowing its a very short blast to Old Hall Corner and so moved towards the middle of the track which means of course that all Norm could do was drop anchor as there aint no way round the outside at Old Hall.... As Norm himself put it, a lesson in defensive driving without crossing the line and becoming reckless...as for my being slow in T2, think of it this way Norm.. on cold tyres and full tanks was I ever going to steam into T2 any faster? In anycase, you were pushing too fast into Cascades (t2) and loosing time all the way down to Island bend... slow in fast out etc!

I have adjusted the finishing positions to reinstate DuFossa to sixth. I have had to give him a nominal finishing time halfway between Nigel and Jason.

Can I remind all drivers that saving the Client replay can really help out in sorting out these kind of problems. The server replay is not infallible.

 It was the most regular rider on the podium and this is very important for a champion.

 Unfortunately my PC shut down before Qualy, end then it did not work, so could not join the race.But that's like a mechanical problem in race.

 The league is in good hands!

Modding first Jonny! Might have to throw Cookie out for being too consistent... Even if he does lose some points you will have to go some to catch him. See you at Keimola.
