Title: UKGPL Season 21 (2011) Novices (65) - Keimola - Sep 6
Post by: miner2049er on September 05, 2011, 08:13:39 PM +0100
UKGPL Season 21 65 Novices Trophy
Race 10 Keimola

A second outing for the Novices at this circuit which is a great combination of twisty sections and a decent long straight. The track was used in the 1960s for Formula 2 races but it never hosted a Formula 1 race. It is a nice track for the 65s and shouldn't be too difficult to learn. The pit exit is a bit unusual in that it isn't near the start line.

The Pole sitter should be aware that they may not be able to see the flag man without looking right (if Mike forgot to change the grid).

Download the circuit here (http://personal.inet.fi/private/kaskia/keimola)

Please see the Novices registration thread for an explanation of the chassis allocations shown below:

Grats to the Nov Champ
And a big Thanks to all Nov drivers for some great racing this season.
My race ended with a disco on the start grid  :-[, hope you all had a good one, and see you next season.

I had a disco and screenfreeze in qual but was glad to hold out in the race...
I started from pole and led the first 8 or 9 laps before I got distracted by becoming uncomfortable and spinning the car down to seventh.... I then pulled my way back to 4th, setting FL on the way before passing Norm on the finishing straight on the last lap to pip him to 3rd place by just 0.04s!
Great race chaps, great season too :)

Sort of happy and sort of gutted. Happy with the pace I had. Made a bad start found myself in about seventh then worked my way up to lead (well happy as this was only my second ever gpl race). But then a few laps latter my crankshaft let go so was gutted about that.

THanks all for the grat season - this was my best simracing season ever!!!!!
Congratz to our new champion, and its realy deserved, whatever Johny or Cookie.
I realy mised previous race , but thats ok, i didnt plan to be so high in standings and fighting, before season start... (i even lead champ two times lol).

this race had a great start for me... until i colide in fight for P2...
later at the same place i colide again... sorry Cookie,
so stupid mistakes and engine blow at the second race part....
so P6 seems not the worst result.
Conclousions after season from me...
I still can't do all races at consistant level. Seems my nerve system is to weak to hold calm head during race ... something missing... or maybe iam becoming old :)

congrats Jason with your first Pole !!!!!

Good practice for this race. We had two nights away spectating at Castle Coombe motorbike races on saturday. Thats a 542mile round trip from home in't' north enabling me to perfect my close running skills on the M42 - When it was moving ;D.
Disappointing turn out of 11 only. There was a lot of good in this race for me. Didn't lose a place off the grid , for once!. Stats show I was ranked No1 for lap consistancy & on track laps. Above all I kept concentration all the way & really battled hard. Unfortunately my slowest lap was lap 27 & Jason's best of the race was lap 28. In those 2 laps he took over a second off me to take it on the line. Actually I didn't know we had finished & I suspect he didn't either as we both kept going full bore for an extra lap. Saw the flags but thought they were for real incidents ::) .
So well done DR, JO, AND (throught gritted teeth  ;)) Jason.

The season - My 5th full one. Really enjoyed the BT7 & I think I have learned a bit driving it. I now have a fixed chassis set up which seems ok for BT11, BRM, & Honda also. However I was last in the championship of those who did all 10 races so it's not that good. Well done Jonny on the championship. I know its close with Cookie but I suspect its yours. Well done Cookie as well.
Finally - thanks to everyone who took part & particularly to those in UKGPL who make it all possible & to Clutch for keeping me right on the technical stuff. Suggestion for next season Snetterton 67 & Solitude for novice racers please. See you all again in season 22.

Norm H

ps A parrot has just landed outside the window & been sick. Losing 3rd on the line I know how it feels ;D

I wonder if someone could make a "photo-finish" picture of us crossing the line, you know, like they do in horse racing.... would be nice to see in terms of meters just how close that 0.04s actually is..

This season has been a mixed bag for me. The BRM is a lovely car to drive but it has some odd characteristics that make it a challenge to keep at the front. People think the BRM is some kind of rocket but I've found that it laks straight line speed compared to the V12s.. There is power there for sure but it comes at the very top of the rev range and to exploit it is to overheat the lump.. the one race where I did try to keep it there was Monza and my V8 went in spectacular fashion, dumping oil and shrapnel all over Karliss in the process! By seasons end I had found out how to exploit that power, using it almost like a turbo-boost on a 80s F1 car... changing gear at 11k most of the time to look after the car but holding to 12k when I need the boost!
There have been incidents, accidents, spills and thrills , but best of all there has been 10 great races with a bunch of fantastic guys! I'm already looking forward to next season, but do I stick with the Beast of Bourne or move on to Mr Chapmans finest?
Congrats to everyone who deserves it, and commiserations to Parrot-boy for losing a podium by the skin of his beak! :D

To capture that magical photofinish, you could use GPL Carcam, to adjust a camera angle, until it has the desired effect.  Then hit Print Screen, to preserve the drama for posterity. 8)

It was a very difficult victory for me ! The Ferrari is not easy to drive compared to the Lotus 33.
During qualifications, I was completely out and was happy with position 8 on the grid.

The first laps of race were even worst, I was not able to overtake Cookie and his little Cooper and spun 2 times.
But other drivers made more mistake than me and my victory was some kind of miracle :)

Congratulations Jonny for the championship, grats to Cookie too and to the 3rd (forget his name  ???) !
I hope to see you next season ...in the "PRO" championship !!??
what will you do ? stays with Novice or race with the Pro ?

Disappointed that I didn't make the last race of the 65 season. Had done a couple a couple of practice sessions & was good for 1.22's (which seems about average pace) but we had a localised power cut.
Good choice of track - in fact the track selection for the whole championship was pretty good. Had some good, bad & indifferent races but good fun as always.
Congratulations to our new champion.

for me i duno... for Pros im to slow...maybe in novices cos i must master save overtakings.
also would love to do some clasics 67.. but seems its not popular here cos have complicated token system..
anyway i can do only one champ at time, cos dont have more time for simracing.. must work.
ps

You're welcome, I think you've improved a lot for the past season.  :)

As for tokens system, what's so complicated about it? You just see how much tokens you have and you use the cars you can afford.

:thumbup2: Congratulations Jonny for the championship! :thumbup2:

Lost it in Oulton where I made a stupid mistake...
I am happy with my 2nd, cause there were only a few other real novices in this competition.

In Keimola my Cooper had no chance, I could do some good laps, but I am not able to keep a 100% pace the whole race.

Yeah was a great first season for me, beginning with that win at Monaco, which realy surprised me  :o

But I had and still have a lot to learn!
In the last race I learned how necessary it is to send your client replay with an incident report! (I didn't!)

CU next season ;)

Maybe we won't see you if we do run an intermediates league - some of us are Novices and some of us aren't...  ;D

I still have SO much to learn - I've improved by 5% or 6% and that means that I don't always get lapped and occasionally I can run with the big boys but at Keimola I can't beat 1:23 which is all the more depressing as Miniblood is in to the 1:22's here.

Sad to miss this last race but I couldn't race even though I was at home.

Big congrats to Jonny and hard luck on Cookie - you were both fantastic.

Personally, happy to be where I am in the championship with Al and Billy but next year it will be Norm (maybe).

Great season and HUGE thanks to Mike for all his hard work and great tracks. Tough act to follow.

Congratulations to JonnyO on winning the Novice championship,  Axel so close and a deserving Runner up this time round (I know what its like to come so close and look back at a previous race and go what if....), and also well done to Karliss on third spot. I still think the Novice championship is the best combination of racing and fun on offer at UKGPL and it sounds like this was another cracking season, I miss it!

That would be here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=9666.msg175497#msg175497).
10) Tracks
Are we happy with the current track allocations?
Are we happy with trying new tracks? (subject to checking for faults and possible testing)
Are there any tracks you would particularly like to see in Season 22? If so which mod and why?

A whole season of Monza :) ....... Maybe one Spa race.

In all seriousness, can we do the following at some point in the next few seasons.

Nürburgring
Clermont-Ferrand
Monza
Spa
Monaco

I will come up with a tentative track list as soon as possible but I don't want to repeat Papy tracks within a season which rulesout Monaco and Monza. Nurby and Clermont are a possibility but both in one season - you are a masochist Al...

Spa is also a possibility. The main consideration is finding tracks that I can drive so we may well have ten rounds of Mildirt... ;)

Race mod published so Championship Standings are final pending any appeals.

Well done to Jonny, Axel and Karliss who might have won it if he hadn't gone and got married.

Well done to RogUK who had a solid season in the Cooper with some great recovery drives.

Well ... it was a surprise to arrive at the end and have a chance to play for the championship.

In general, surprisingly novice races were very comprtadas houe and a low number of penalties.

I participated in other categories and have always had more problems with accidents, this is the highlight of the category novices, and I was delighted to finish the championship with no penalty.

The fact that the victory was with a large dose of luck, Congratulations to the big races by Cookie and Karliss.
