Title: UKGPL Season 21 (2011) Grads (67) - Zandvoort (1948-72) - Sep 11
Post by: vosblod on September 07, 2011, 12:36:11 PM +0100
So we head to Holland for the final race of the season. Hristo and Ronnie seem to have it in the bag in the Works and Privateers respectively but other spots are up for grabs.

The Works will run on PRO Damage and Privateers will run on Intermediate Damage with the allowance of ONE shift-R reset. No Shift-Rs are allowed in practice unless authorized by the moderator. A Shift-R (fault or not) MUST be followed by a Stop & Go. A Shift-R for tyres/fuel is not allowed. Any driver taking more then ONE Shift-R OR failing to take a Stop & Go will be disqualified from the race result.

Please be in IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:50 pm UK Time

Reserve drivers should not join the server(s) until there are only 30 minutes of qualifying left. Please restrict chat to pit messages. Moderating will be by reported incidents only, however the moderators reserve the right to review any incident with a particular emphasis on lap one. The aim is to review the race the following weekend so incident reports should be submitted within five days of the race (ie the following Friday). We're hopeful most incidents can be resolved amicably and recommend a days deep breath with a replay review before posting. A sorry in the forum won't be taken as an automatic admission of guilt by the moderators. There will be FULL moderation of lap one regardless of whether you submit an incident report.

With the token system chassis strategy will be a factor. A driver must have sufficient tokens for the chassis he drives in the race.  Any driver who does not have sufficient tokens will be disqualified from the result and his tokens will be set to zero.

Chassis costs;
Lotus 20 / Eagle 17 / Ferrari 15 / Brabham 10 / Cooper 5 / Honda 3 / BRM 0

To see your current tokens hover your mouse over your total points on the Works (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=302&theme=6) or Privateers (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=303&theme=6) championship standings pages. Ten tokens will be added when you cross the start line.

Circuit Park Zandvoort is located in Burgemeester van Alphenstraat, near the town of Zandvoort in the Netherlands. The first street race was held on June 3, 1939. A real circuit was not built until after the war, based on communications roads built by the German army during its occupation in WW2. It was inaugurated on August 7, 1948. Next year the circuit hosted the Zandvoort Grand Prix. The following year, the race was called the Dutch Grand Prix, and it was included in the Formula One World Championship from 1952. It remained on the F1 calendar for 30 out of the next 34 years. In 1985, the Dutch Grand Prix was held for the last time. The company that commercially ran the circuit went out of business, marking the end of Circuit Zandvoort. A plan to save the remaining track was eventually made and Circuit Park Zandvoort was born, a 1.6 mile Club Circuit, in 1989.

Oh joy! Qualy was just about to start, and my Internet connection is down. Posting this from my phone. Getting just a little miffed with virgin media right now as this has happened a couple of times now. :(

Well, was in for a nice tight race and managed to wear my car as a hat for my d...head at turn 2. Beaten all my records of stupidity, it was a tall order, but I managed, how cool is that. Do I like this yummy pro mode, of course I do, you bet I do, bring it on

Apologies to the few desperate souls I involved in my idiocy.

Ill may be back when I can finally play this s...t game

What a rotten way to end the season.....sitting pretty comfortably in 3rd, having seen off the attentions of Clive and Fulvio, and actually feeling like I was racing against both of them. Then about half way my laptop froze - I think because my sound card might be dodgy and that was the end of that.....very disappointing...

Ho Hum. Well cheers everyone, esp mods and server maintainers. See you next season.

a really hard race  :-\  ...but I enjoyed it  ;)

I had the pole but made a slow start and Ronnie + Ross overtook me.
Then I was 3 rd during 3 or 4 laps before Ronnie and Ross collided.
So I took the lead ...but only for 2 or 3 laps  :(

Then it was the beginning of the nightmare : I spun 2 times and it was my fault, I blown my engine and did a Stop and Go, I collided 2 or 3 times with backmarkers (the last time when I prepared myself to overtake Martin) ...

Now, I hope to be there from 1st to last race for the Season 22, but I am clearly not ready to go with the "Pros" !

Nice to finish the season with a win although I certainly wasn't the quickest out there at all.

Enjoyed a good battle in qually with Dave and Ronnie, with returnee Allan also up there in fourth. Have to admit that, with the Lotus, I was hoping for pole but you guys were too fast :)

The early laps were frantic, Allan got a flier and chased Ronnie whilst Dave, Sky and myself followed them. Then Allan tried to pass Ronnie into Tarzan and they hit each other, letting us through. As Dave mentioned, he kindly went off leaving me trying to pass Sky, and with the recovering Allan right up my exhaust pipes. I got Sky at Tarzan on the second attempt, would just like to thank him for racing clean and fair.

After that it was a case of building a gap, which was made easier by others falling off. It seemed like a long time to the flag but eventually it came and I could clinch second place in the points too.

Well done to champ Ronnie, who has set an incredible standard this season. I hope to go one better next time but I'm sure Dave, Allan and plenty of others will be making it very hard. Looking forward to it.

Finally, thanks to Vos for running Grads this season, I think we've all had some good racing at a nice variety of tracks.

Season 22 over for me. Chose the Cooper as it seemed the most manageable car at Zandvoort.
Would have had a reasonable by very unspectacular race apart from an oversight on lap 23. Having already been lapped I was being extra careful to give the lapping cars plenty of room. I pulled off the tarmac to allow Martin past without realising Dave Ranier was in hot pursuit & I drifted back into his path. Sorry but I genuinely didn't know the other car was there. In future I think I'll stay on the track - may make it slightly longer for the lappers to pass but will be more predictable.

Substandard qualifying for me, had trouble getting the Eagle to work. Probably just driving it too slow.
Careful start in the race, kept the other cars around me in sight after running 2 wheels in the grass at T1 and letting Bill through. Lap 2 managed to beach it on the inside of T1 after a stupid spin. Reset and s n g later, was settling in to some fair times then spun at T1 again after tickling the grass on the entry..... ??? Circulated well after that catching drivers ahead that were having their own battles with silly spins.Started catching Fabio by over .5 second a lap til lap 10 when Fabio went up the wall between Hondenviak and Tunnel Oost and ended up mid track, on his lid, blocking the entire track. Braked harder than I needed too and the car went right lodging itself in the wire mesh fence. Game over. Fun while it lasted and stayed on server watching the titanic battles going on up front. Congratulations on a fine win Ross, with Ray trying hard all race to bridge the gap. And despite setting the fastest lap, never seemed to be able to get close enough to attack. Grats to Martin as well for holding off a charging and very quick Dave to snare 3rd.
Thanks go to the mods, admins and especially Mike, Tim and Paul for running another top class UKGPL season. Roll on season 22.

I was really looking forward to my first race back with ukgpl for about three years.   As I only had 15 tokens, I decided to take the Brabham as I seem to be quicker with it than in the Ferrari.   I was pleasantly surprised to qualify fourth.   I got a good start and followed Ronnie down the inside into Tarzan and emerged in second place.   I followed him for several laps trying to get a good exit onto the straight but he seemed to be able to get the power down better there and I couldn't quite get into his slipstream.  Then I got it right and was close behind him onto the straight but I didn't gain much as the Ferrai seems to be quite a bit quicker in a straight line.  We were heading down to Tarzan and I was still close behind so I moved to the inside looking for a chance to outbrake him.  There appeared to be a big enough gap and I thought that I could get at least level with him before he reached the turn in point.   It appeared to be clean move on my screen with no contact but gpl thought differently and we both finished up the bank on the outside.   Very disappointing.  My apologies to Ronnie for ruining his race.        Several cars went through before I could get going again.   I managed to work my way back up to third, as cars ran wide, behind Sky and Ross.   They were having a great battle but the Lotus in front of me was warping quite badly and was skittering across the track in all directions.  It was difficult to make any sort of move as I could never be sure where he was on the track.    Eventually he got a good run in Sky's slipstream and outbraked him down the inside into Tarzan.   I was now on Sky's tail, trying to find a big enough gap but there was no way past.  Ross was begining to ease away so I was trying to put the pressure on hoping for a mistake as the Eagle was leaving me on the straight.   Then as we were going through the left and right after Scheivlak, the Eagle suddenly slowed.  I don't know whether Sky got slightly off line and lifted or what but I was concentrating on getting my turn in points right when I found the Eagle just in front of me.  I hit the brakes but I couldn't  avoid him and we both went off.  Sorry Sky.  My fault. I must have a look at the official replay when it appears.   I tried to get going again but got collected and pushed into the bridge just before  Tunnel Oost.   I decided that I had caused enough mayhem and retired.    Very disappointing return.  I have been racing with GBGPL for some time and haven't been involved in an accident for ages.  Sods law I guess.
Apoligies again to those that suffered.   I will try to do better next ime.

It's good to have you back Allan and it seems you were more unlucky than anything else. Warp may well have been a factor with you and Ronnie, and the incident with Sky might have been caused by me being slow out of Scheivlak in front of you both. You were certainly very quick, especially off the line :) Hope to see you next season, and we are running some fun races soon so stay tuned.

I was surprised to read that my car was warping a lot in front of you, I did notice the red bars a little high at times so perhaps I had some connection issues. Would like to hear from Sky if he found the same.

And so the fabled few, arrived at their last stand, amidst the dunes at Sandfort, determined to fight the forces of reality, once more.  One last gasp for our ruling Moderators - let valour commence - let forces clash - let victims lie - 'til the sands of time sweep clean the slate.  And only the fables remain, writted here for the generations to come, to awe and inspire them, to deeds done, undone, and yet to be, done up.

Sorry 'bout that . . . Pulitzer's not 'til next year!  So, to race strategy :  my choice was either for a fast, or a docile steed for the race.  Decided my mild-mannered driving style suited the placid Cooper.  This meant being a, 'sitting Duck' down the main straight, but I hoped for better things, around the twiddly bits.

I'd recently been at Le Mans, for the 24hr's, which was sadly shortened, due to so many cars leaving the track, all at once.  Sitting inside a GT40, I'd had to move my pitboard, unsuccessfully, and my pitman was now sitting in the wrong place.  So I jumped out to give him a talking to, and returned to find my earlier laptimes hiding, and only the right half of the pitboard showing!  Soldiered on regardless to mid-grid, though close to being last, and aghast!  Amazing how closely matched we Privateers are these days!  :D

My plan, for the opening melee, was to keep the track always in sight, and prosper through others misfortune . . . in the nicest sort of way, of coarse!  This worked well, and put the faster Ronnie, and Dave Rainier behind me, during the frantic action of the early laps.  I'd grabbed Michael's tail for a few, until there came a very sideways moment, which let Ronnie's Ferrari through.  It also let the Tifosi go wild, though the British Wellies, remained hopeful. :)

As things settled in, my pitboard foretold each lap, of an anonymous enemy, er, umm . . . friendly combatant, closing in from behind, ( David ) and another clearing off up ahead.   Along also, with rather too many laps remaining, to allow for sustaining, of a podium spot!  Thence 3 times, the evil doer . . . um, enterprising opponent, closed the gap between us, and 3 times the forces of fate, interveined to forestall him.

Luck was on my side this day, and to the valiant, went the spoils!  After a hard run and entertaining race, I certainly felt I'd earned some spoilage!  Thanks be, for an epic and well run, Season long battle.  We fabled few, of the Internuts, are now writted into history - hallowed be thy fame.

Pretty fun race, tho mostly ruined again... after practicing with honda and ferrari and crashing 50 times per lap with them, i decided in the last minute to go with eagle...Which was behaving marveliously, its actually a great car for twisty and bumpy tracks with its solid suspension... First 6 laps were a nice real racing and I was quite exited about it... Seems could keep up with front runners, being pretty fast at first half of the track. Ros overtook me, then messed that long lefthander, I had to slow down and got Allan in my rear... I dont know why its so attractive for people to do that...  Then i did a nice little dance and luckuly landed on my four tires. This wasn't wery good for my car, and it wasnt behaving so well after that. I found out why when i looked the mehcanical report later...

Skymole 2173 -m - spotters reporting:
medium problems with left rear tire.
minor problems with right rear tire.
severe problems with left rear suspension.
medium problems with right rear suspension.
the car has an engine problem.

It wasnt that bad actually, after the myriad alien setups i have tried... It still felt better than most of them. Had some fight with Hunt, but finnaly span, not being used with my new "setup" yet... then I keeped going, 2 seconds per lap slower and lots of spins, but managed to finish...

Ross, i see on my replay you were really warping badly, especially at lap 6, luckuly, on lap seven, when you overtake, theres no wrap...we were pretty close on tarsan.

I have tried to download the GradPrivs Zandy race but I can't open the zip file.  I used to be able to click on it to open the zip file and then drag and drop to gpl replay file but it appears to be still zipped when I do that.   Or, I get an 'ADD' box and when I complete the box the file still appears to be zipped.
Can anyone tell me what to do?

Allan, the replay is zipped up in .7z format, you need 7-zip to extract it. Download it from here-

Which version of Windows are you running? And if you are on XP or Vista, is it 32 or 64 bit?

As Hristo says you could use WinRAR - it is the most flexible of all the Zip programs. You would still need to choose 32 bit or 64 and if you are not sure get the 32 bit version.

For me that was an unenjoyable race. I didn't really get the cooper up to speed in qual and was a long down the grid but made up for it with an amazing start.. but then on lap two I undid my great work by overshooting the hairpin. Chasing down a few guys proved I had some serious lap-time potential, but in a cooper I was bottled up round the twisties and blown away on the straight... passing was impossible... I tried once.. it wasn't going to work so backed out and had to yeild another place so just pulled over and gave up.... don't think I'll bother much with GPL next season :(

As per many of the others I would like to thank those involved in organizing and moderating (and generally making things happen).  I know there have been a few tense moments and unnecessary behavior this seasons, thanks for keeping the faith.

Although my performance has left a lot to be desired I have enjoyed the racing this season (PSC & Grads)...also think my racecraft has moved on a touch.  I couldn't always find much time to practice, which probably won't improve much....

As for the race, I didn't better my pb but was pleased with a sub 1:25 lap for qually and rather amused to be 0.01 ahead of my mate Arf!!!!  Alas, a toilet break put paid to my start and I frantically fuelled my qual setup for the race...to the soundtrack of several thousand horsepower making a break for it!!!  I eventually started from the pits 800yds down and was expecting to pass the usual L1 aftermath, but fair play it must have been a clean start.

I passed a couple of cars and some others bit the dust in one way or another...Clive obliged me by moving off the circuit, probably due overheating tyres.  I then closed slowly on Fulvio and Arf until I lost concentration and checked out the scenery...a few times (it's rather nice!).  I finished in front of Clive, but GPL assumes I was a lap down due my pit lane start...do I get P4 or P5?

Bob.

My apologies to Ronnie for ruining his race.

No problem on my part Allan, these things sometimes happen when racing. On that note apologies to Bernie and Mike. Final race of the season could have gone better but it was not to be. I chased hard, too hard at times but Ross was not to be caught. Congrats to Ross on a fine win and Martin on a perservering third - could be second if the mods have their way with me?

Really enjoyed this season, winning yeah, but the turnout, quality and behaviour of the drivers, choice of tracks all made this the standout 67 series. Big thanks to the organisers and mods and I look forward to seeing you again.

"You naughty man !" . . . Unaccustomed as I am, to speeches - With the final race rulings upon us, it would appear I've been promoted to  podium person in Privateers, in the Season's standings.  A big THANK YOU! to Cookie, who lent me his backup wheel from Germany, mid-season - I quickly discovered it goes forwards as well !  And when my 35euro replacement broke, after only 2 months of hard use, his reluctance to be reunited, allowed me to step up from 5th, at the final race.

Ronnie and Ross were, undoubtedly the class of the field, but the standard of driving displayed by everyone, by seasons end, was worthy of admiration.  I think the spectators got their moneysworth . . ."That Champagne is wet you know, Bernie !" :clown:

Congrats again Martin, only just spotted your elevation to the heady heights of the Privateers standings at Bernie's expense. I will certainly raise a glass in your honour tonight mate.

I just read the moderation report ...I find it very hard for me
but ok : "dura lex, sed lex" or "I fought the law and the law won" as it was singing by one of my favourite band.

For the Stop and Go, first I stopped and then I reset and yes, I thought it was the correct move.
Now I will remember this rule "first reset, then stop and go"

For the pass of Hannah, I didn't know I touched his rear right tyres... so I'm sorry for Hannah, all my apologizes  :'(

Hi Guys,

Did you check my finishing position as per my post below.  Suppose it doesn't really matter, but I finished in front of Evil, but due the pit lane start GPL counted me as being a lap down.  I even drove an extra lap at the end to make sure.

Bob.

Sorry Bob missed that, only tend to work on incident reported items.
Do you want me to look and revamp the results?

Cheers,

Hope you don't mind but rather then work out the exact timings of how far you were in front of Evil I have just plonked in a random time to put you in front in the results.
