Title: Fun Race - Porsche - Cerne's Wood / Dragon's Nest - Sep 30
Post by: vosblod on September 27, 2011, 09:55:52 AM +0100
As part of preparations for Season 22 we are testing Dragon's Nest and Cerne's Wood. Both to see how stable they are and what you make of them for possible inclusion in the new schedule. DN is a downhill/uphill test and CW has lots of trees to catch out the unwary.

As with all of our fun races, there will be no moderation, unlimited use of Shift-R (with no need to stop and go) and no password. Of course I'm sure we would all appreciate it if everyone drives in the respectful manner we're accustomed to here at UKGPL.

Race List = IGOR
Server = UKGPL_3
IP address = ping ukgpl3.dyndns.org
Race date = 30-09-2011
Time = 21:00 UK time
Track = Zandvoort
Variant = GT mod
Chassis = Porsche
Damage Model = INT
Qualifying time = 15 minutes per race
Race length = 2 x Short races
Password: no password

The tracks can be downloaded from ;
Cerne's Wood : http://javinester.co.uk/gpl/cerne.html (http://javinester.co.uk/gpl/cerne.html)
Dragon's Nest : http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=1078 (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=1078)

I've uploaded an older video I made, during a lap of Cernes Wood.  The video is not without it's glitches, so I'll not leave it there for long  :  http://vimeo.com/29673066  It uses an early attempt to represent the F2 cars from 1967, in GPL.  We've come a long way since then.  I expect most have seen the recent Stefan Roess F2 preview video.   8)

Meanwhile, the recent Goodwood revival, is featured on ITV4 this evening at 8pm, UK Summertime, for those who are permitted to see it  :  http://www.itv.com/itv4/

What are these cars at first video? Some unreleazed mod?

It uses an early attempt to represent the F2 cars from 1967, in GPL.
The cars use the 1967 physics, and can be run in training mode, to simulate reduced power.  However,
modern computers can comfortably handle much more complex models.

How do you mean? If you are talking re Cerne's I use the autumn one as it's more moody, the spring add-on is optional.

Ah OK then, I've the right one !
I made some laps with Axel yesterday in the evening. It is a nice track. Onestly speaking there are only a few tracks I don't like at all, actually only Monaco and Keimola.

P.S.: yesterday evening we made 2 races at Interlagos 73 with mods 67 and GT. Where may I find the replay files if any ?

Thanks.

There isn't a password on it - what error message are you getting?

The IP address renewed this morning so your DNS cache may be wrong. Can you ping ukgpl3.dyndns.org? You should get a return of 81.159.115.219

To refresh your address list you can use 'ipconfig /flushdns' from a command prompt. That will force your PC to use external DNS servers to resolve the address so changes are propagated to your PC.

I gave up cos the warp was too bad - was getting smashed right left and centre. The Latency bar on my screen was maxed out most of the time...

Cerne's Wood and FPS was up and down so much it wasn't fun.  Any more than 2 cars in view it was dreadful.  I'm hoping its because it was GT at a graphically intensive track as my system in solid at 99.9% of other places and even that .1% is just a flicker now and again, not all the way around a track.

Shame as its a fun track, albeit very tight.

I really like the Cerne track, but there was a bit of warp, as I noticed when a close moment turned into an almighty crash.

Started further back for the Dragon, at the start everyone disappeared then reappeared and the fps dropped alarmingly and everything was a juddery mess.  Technical track that could be okay but not with the issues...IMO.

Cerne's Wood was a disaster. My frames rate was awful and after a few crashes too many I gave up. Seems my ageing PC is getting worse by the day  :-\.

Dragon's Nest was interesting. I had great battles with just about everyone and got caught up in several accidents. Was great fun mind  8).

Looking forward to the madness of Interlagos,

Cheers all.

Results uploaded, a couple of fun events.

Any feedback on both tracks appreciated. Don't think there were any server issues, might have been a few blips in the first race as I set it to 100 instead of 132.

As regards Dragon's Nest I have this pencilled in as a Works event for next season. However it has been pointed out to me that, in 21 seasons of UKGPL, the 67's have never run a fantasy track. It would be good to have any feedback as to whether you feel a 67 Fantasy is a step too far over the tradition barrier.

I had absolutely no problems with both tracks. All went smooth and stable here!
But I saw Arf and others warping badly...

Cerne's Wood has a wonderful flow for me. Looks like one of the roads in my aera :D
Had some great fun with very close racing with Fulvio

Dragon's Nest is a little too wide and synthetic for me...

So, it wasn't just me?  At Cernes Wood, I had glitches in embarrassing places, and car's materialize at embarrassing moments !  So I wasn't quite sure if my car was supposed to be rushing, or blushing.  Bars looked Ok though.  Lovely setting, but ruined my race. :'(

Dragon's fest created a few half second glitches also, but it's wide enough to survive them. The contours make it an interesting drive. But seems like neither track is happy with high load car sets, judging by this evenings perambulations.

No connection, graphics, game issues on either track.

While Cerne is certainly one hell of a challenge and an eye candy track, I think Dragons Nest will provide the better racing with its wide forgiving contours. Reality or fantasy my vote is for tracks that provide a balance between being challenging and offering more than one racing line for the chance of safe overtaking.

Thanks for organising.

yes but its as slippy as an elephant on ice and the trees on the outside mean you have to be SUPER careful. Lotsa crashes in the race but it was good fun though :)

Cerne's Wood will certainly provide a challenge for the novices and being consistent may be more important than being fast...
