To round off our season break we have organised a fun race going head to head against our friends at GP Fun. We will all be using the Lotus with the option to use team liveries if you so wish (see note later on). We would like to get a good spread of drivers so don't be put off if you are not of alien standard, entry will be on a first come first served basis. So please post below if you want to race, once we get nine drivers anyone else will go onto our reserves list.
The intention is to have a re-run over the xmas break at an Italian venue of GP Fun's choice. Let's have a generous reception for the drivers from GP Fun.

Race List = VROC
Server = tbc
IP address = tbc
Race date = 25-10-2011
Track = Silverstone
Time = 20:30 UK time (note earlier start time)
Variant = 67F1
Chassis;
Lotus (see note later on re team liveries)
Damage Model = PRO
Qually time = 30 minutes (server will start at 35 mins)
Race length = LONG - 25 laps (extra points for finishers)
Password = will be provided to entrants prior to the race

The track can be downloaded from : original papy track

Meet in VROC chatroom : Italiani

Points Scoring;
Standard Points Positions 1-19:

Extra Points:

3 Extra Points for each driver who can finish the race (being lapped still counts)
10 Team Points for the whole Team (GP Fun / UKGPL), if all drivers of the team cross the finish line.

IF we have an uneven number of drivers from each team the numbers will be evened up after the race. eg if we had 9 UKGPL and 8 GP Fun drivers the last placed UKGPL'er won't count.

I'll probably be able to race too, if there's room to join. I'm not so much fast with the 67, but it's possible to do a regular race to achieve some good points. A typical Nick Heidfeld's race ;D

Hello, Lorenzo from GPFun here.
First of all it's a pleasure to join forces with you.
Let's spend a few words about car assignation: many of us (me on top) was not too happy to have to race Ferraris (us) vs Lotus (you). But we are not the half as happy to see you on slower brabbies. I can imagine Fabio embarassment in bringing to you our complaints, first when it was Lotus vs Ferrari, and maybe even now for opposite reason (Brabbies vs Ferrari), but that's it.
It's getting clear to me, as you are going to use Brabbies, that perhaps your aim is to consider somehow driver nationality. However, if we can't share equally the seven cars -imho the best option, it's no problem, we should try to understand who's overall faster, ourselves or you, and counterbalance.
Everyway GPL is fun!!!! ;)

Yes it was basically to differentiate between who is who on track and also keep with the English/Italian theme.
Is it a big issue for the UKGPL'ers? We can just have a 'free for all' but it just seems less confusing having fixed chassis. If it does prove a disadvantage maybe UKGPL could take the Lotus on the re-run, it's only a bit of fun after all.

Yep, it's just fun, nevertheless let me say I'm not happy with me (us) on Ferrari and you on Brabby. It sounds very good idea Ferrari vs Lotus on the re-run, fair match considering both races.

Not that I'm going to participate, but fun or not, it's competition and the chances should be equal to both sides. Why not just run a spec race with Ferrari or Brabham only? It's more than enough that you know who you're racing with by looking at the pit board and/or Pribluda. That or perhaps you could use those custom car skins that we used some time ago when we raced against another league, I can't recall which one it was.

It was vs GPFun at Monza, UKGPL had green cars and GPFun white cars, but we raced on GPFun server that was set to run a special carset and all the green cars had to join first to get the green carset.

Is this race moderated? I could take a few fezzas out for the team (accidentally, of course  :o) - but I'd have to wait a few laps for them to get round to me...  ;D

Hopefully I can trawl round for a few points - maybe those crazy Italians will take each other out and let me sneak through... Looking forward to it already although as it is half term I will probably not be allowed to race by Mrs. No Fun at All :(

 Back from my holiday and just catching up on what is happening.

Am I reading this correctly ? UKGPL are taking on GPFun at Silverstone. UKGPL use Brabs and GPFun use Ferraris?

Its unlikely that I will be able to make this race now.  We have decided to up our martial arts training a bit more which will take place on a Tuesday most weeks.  If for any reason we don't that night I will pop along and see if any seats are free.

TBH it was just an idea so we would know who is on who's team at a glance. If it was a wipeout we could get the Lotus on a rerun (it might be a wipeout regardless ;D).

Yes there is a little drawback obviously having a rule to join the server but...not so strong. The fact we have only 2 liveries make it simply the entrance, first XX Brits and then YY Italians or viceversa since cars are all the same.

At GPFun will start our tenth season on Monday, 24th at... Silverstone!!
We usually start the season at Kyalami but yesterday we tought this would be a good training for the following day challenge with UKGPL so we changed it...

OK I've now found Phil's old post re team liveries which is copied below. I'm waiting to hear whether we can run the event on GP Fun's server.
Anyway it all looks fairly straightforward, I'll be around to help shephard people onto the server in the right order. As you can see it is up to you whether you want to use the team livery, if you don't it just means you will just see the normal liveries.

Will post up the UKGPL team drivers next.

For those of us who haven't used liveries before, these are the instructions Luca provided for us last time:

Car Liveries

- backup your "cars67" directory in the gpl/cars/ folder.  Just name it cars67_backup , for instance
- download the gpfun/ukgpl carset at
http://www.gpfun.net/public/downloads/Files/Carset/carset_ukgpl.rar
- on race day we will enter the server in a particular order; do not join unless instructed to do so !
  Everybody from ukgpl will join the server, then everybody from gpfun will get in. At this stage we will start the practice session.
- All the GPFun drivers will have #67, all the ukgpl ones #90

After the race you can simply restore your backed up "cars67" folder, if you want.
Similarly, should you experience any problem simply restore your old "cars" folder.

What's in the download?
The standard gplea cars (not hi-res) plus the GPFun and UKGPL liveries

What if I don't want to install them?
No problem. You will just see the standard gpl liveries (red Ferrari, white honda etc) with no numbers

Will I see the liveries any time I use gpl?
No. GPL online uses numbers from 1 to 22 to allocate liveries; we use numbers above those so that our skins are displayed only on aptly set servers.

Is there any risk, crashes etc?

Not really, we have been using personalized skins since 2003 and never had problems.
There is one important exception, however: the skins are designed for specific versions of the cars. If you use a Ferrari36V, for instance, with a livery made for the Ferrari48v , then your computer may crash.
That's why we prepared a download with all the cars, not just the additional liveries.

How does gpl know which livery to assign me?
Online liveries are called by specific 3do. If a Brabham driver is assigned #44, then he will use the brab44.3do
We can edit the 3do so that it calls the #44 mips, where we stored the desired livery.
Drivers are assigned numbers in accordance to the driver.ini and their order of entrance in the server. The first driver to enter the server will have the number of driver 19 in the driver.ini , the 2nd to enter will be driver18 and so forth.
By having drivers entering the server in a specific order we can ensure that they get assigned the numbers, hence the liveries, that we want.

Can I drive my personalized livery offline?
GPL uses number 4 for the offline driver. There is a utility that you can use to change this number to anything you wish. Then it is simply a matter of storing the desired livery in the appropriate 3do file.

Ok folks, just to know, what does your "mini" mean? I've thought Cooper, yet don't know for sure.
We at GPFun (exclusively 67F1) use to frequently refer to Brm as "mucca" (italian for cow, perhaps because of noise, tonnage and last but not least handling),  to Ferrari as "Ferro" (italian for iron, referring to his remarkable featheriness...) or even "Ferracci" (sounds like "rusty irons"), more rarely to Honda as "hondoglianza" (crasis of "honda" and "condoglianze"= italian for condolences)... and that's about all ;)

Funny you should say that Paul. Loaded the new carset to try it, and although it only showed the standard colors on our server it appears to be very hi-res....and the heavy load killed my frames to slideshow level. So best I don't play with the limits imposed by my laptop. Room for one more.......

Interesting - I have been trying to play on my super dooper multimedia laptop and it dies after a few laps with frame rates going down to 7 or so. My 'normal' PC is fine but the Laptop is unplayable - suspect it is something to do with the CPU stepping down into energy saving mode or something because changing the graphics options so that the race looks like 'Space Invaders'

Now I might be wrong Paul, because this is a computer related issue!!  ::) Which means that I am probably talking complete*****

But, I seem to recall reading something about running GPL on laptops and things going wrong like you have described.

If I remember correctly there is something about GPL that the OS on many laptops does not recognise as a running application, therefore it goes into sleep mode after "x" minutes.

The solution may have been to disable the screen saver and the timer that initiates it or to set up a small programme running in the background to con the OS into thinking that the laptop is still being used. A little digging might get some answers around the community?

This happened in the BREASTS race on Wednesday - I was in a very creditable last place and suddenly I couldn't drive...

...and then the frame rates dropped off...  ;D

Thanks Clive. I'll check it out. It would be nice if I could get it sorted. Does't seem to be an issue offline though.

Works like IGOR except you load up VROC instead. The chatrooms are the same.

PS When buying laptops we all desperately look for top-end performance video-boards, often fatally underrating sound-boards... and yes, sound troubles can give struttering, I solved mine (since 3-4 years I'm running GPL on my laptop) by setting on #5 in options/sound & gameplay/mixer control/max of sounds and swapping the original sierra/gpl/sound file with a properly settled one provided by a fellow gpler some years ago

There is a bios option in most laptops, called "Intel Speedstep", which lowers the cpu speed to save energy... you might have 2 ghz, but to run it at 400 hz for no obvious reason. Wierdly, it caused my laptop to overheat before disabling it... Theres a Gem+ option, but im not sure if it does anything.

About vroc: Its wery important to not run vroc directly... vroc will run unpatched gpl, which will cause half of your setups to not work and probably delete your records for all laptimes besites the original 11. You have to run Gem+, select the right mod and then click the green vroc button below to run the proper v1.2 version of gpl (with long tracks, finetuning in setups and all that stuff).

port 113 is opened, i tried other clients like mirc and miranda, both wont connect me to shadowworld. Also tired changing adresses and fully reinstalling gem, everything i could find. Posted the problem at srmz, but i have no answers yet. Guess it wont be fixed soon... Othervize i wont have problem joining a race if i get the password some other way.

Exacly... racelist is fine, no chat working whatsoever, anywhere.  And i tried all these, including mIRC, i cant connect to shadowworld at all. I cant connect to any other IRC chats too, if im doing this right. Ports are open. My internet was off for a while, worked before that, now it doesnt... probably something with the provider. Tried connecting from other computer of my house and it didnt work neither.

Well - that was a bit of a letdown...

Was really looking forward to it and then the reserves turned up. Typical, you can't get the drivers out for the season and they turn up in droves for a Fun Race... happy to let Steve drive in my place but then I find that GPLFun's server has died... Luca has to talk me through setting up a livery, install a loose grid and then use VROC.... in the middle of that Mini phones up to ask why I haven't picked him up...

So host and then abandon ship. Bit gutted really. Never mind, made good contacts with GPFun I think and they are a really good bunch.

Hope we acquited ourselves well. Soon know...

I hate silverstone... any other track has 2-3 hard spots you know you have to watch out for...  at Silverstone you can go out everywhere anythime... with 50/50 chance to end up upside down...

Seriously though, that was something I could not have done and you got everything sorted in a short space of time. Just sorry I could not get a better finish for the team, but that Lotus is a very strange car when you are not used to it!!!  Still I got an outright PB for Silvy in the mid 1:26's on the last lap so quite chuffed. A shame it took me 24 laps to get it right!!!  :-\

Grats to all the UKGPL team for a great effort, just a few more finishers and we might have stolen that on points  ::)

Thanks also to GPfun for racing with us. Lorenzo Melli was simply lapping 5% faster than me and I suspect he might have been able to quicker if he needed to. I had a race long battle with Sergio for 2nd spot, allowing him to get away when I slipped a wheel onto the grass at Abbey, trying to pressurise him, and did a 360 with 3 laps to go.  :death:

Hi guys, nice struggle with EvilClive lasted almost all the race long. But I was surprised he left Lorenzo go away so I've lost a little time trying to overtake Evil without any risk to compromise his and my race.
He was faster than me after the green flag and he took the 2nd place leaving me the 3rd. At last he made a mistake leaving the track clear in front of me.
I had no time to test the Lotus well and I've never used it at all before. Very fun race however. Thanks to all the UKGPLers, the GPFunners and to the event managers.

Compliments to Lorenzo and EvilClive on the podium with me.

See you at the next challenge.

From somwhere I thought it was gonna be fez vs brabs. Anyway I got 15 mins qual and was off fine. Had some hot moments last laps with pasquale Milano who was faster than me but also did his share of mistakes wich let me come in front of him a few times. It was fun . gz Gpfun :)

As for me, my Lotus Personal Best is 1.25.8 (some 3 years old), so my practice laptime is pretty tied to my abilities (even if pribluda last night was showing a nice -to me- 25.4 Best Combined for the very first time... maybe I should insist for a few days to get some ranking improvement...  ::)).
As for my teammates, I can witness they were eager to do well, if some had troubles it was just lack of acclimatization with Lotus.
No mercy at all, as you may see ;)

Just for the record , I thought the GPFUN boys very quick and very fair fighters , what bit I saw of them that is.

Unfortunately I didnt have the car livery upgrade installed so was confronted by a whole field of green and yellow Loti  :o

I too understood the car choice for GPFUN was Ferrari's, so didnt bother with the install because I thought I could tell a Ferrari from a Cosworth DFV from a mile behind , which is where I spent most of my short time on track   ::)

Really enjoyed the race though , in spite of the result  ::)

LOL Paul, after all...Binoculars are always better than a Telescope !!!  ;D

I would like to think next time we all will use the slowest car instead of the fastest one. It should be more spectacular.  ;)

I was having a nice race, running in a good 5th place, but in the mid-race my engine started smoking. I decided to stay on track and try to bring the car until the end to make some more ponits, but someone had a spin and crashed into me when I was already off the track. It really wasn't a lucky day :laugh:

My qualy was really bad. Got an 11th place, so far from my PB (1:27,1) and almost lost the start due to a phone call. Anyway, had so much fun in nice battles with Fulvio, Andrea and Tom :)

Congratulations to GP FUNners for the win (very impressive speed by the leaders! :o ) and especially for the organizers and drivers, for the fun. It's always very nice to make that interleague races. ;)

This was a great idea...less fun for me in reality, but only cos I had a bad day. Not sure why I went off at the first corner, but it set the scene for the first half of the race, where I had to overtake the same drivers - had a couple of offs avoiding warpers.

The second half of the race was much more fun, as I tried to chase down the pack. Got too excited when I saw 2 red cars, and lost it, but recovered again - perhaps my luckiest race ever in terms of # of offs vs damage incurred.

We should definitely do this again...after a little cat herding practice  ;D

So the liveries worked then???   I assumed they didn't since all the cars I saw were green and yella.  Installed the skins, but assumed with the change of server and all that, that this was all ditched.  I had issues joining via VROC and joined direct in GPL...worked though...for the first time...perhaps that's why all the cars looked the same to me.

Echo Clive's thanks to BadBlood (Paul), good perseverance.  I have to admit I almost bailed at one point, it seemed an impossible task and perhaps wrongly I thought the GP Funners were out of patience.  I'd really like to do this again sometime, I may even make it past lap 2  ;D

First of all many many thanks to all the people that arranged such fun event but, amongst them, a BIG thank to Paul for lending us the server at the very last minute and to LucaV to setting it with the liveries and to call us to join it!

My race wasn't so exciting, as Sky threw me out of the first turn: these are races, unfortunately.

It seems that everybody enjoyed such event and I hope to see you all on next January, for the return race In Italy with the Italian racing car.

When UKGPL will win it we will (unfortunately?!?) have to arrange a third event to definitively crown the winning League...

Grats to GPFun, but I guess it was to be expected. I'm surprised at how slow the laptimes are though, the top drivers on both sides must've been slacking off!  ;D

I don't know about the other guys but it has been absolutely the 1st time I've been using a Lotus for a race and...I think it will be quietly also the last one. I can only say that this car seems coming from another class but it is not so simple to drive with high performances.

I had bad spacing gears, 1° and 2° gears too much close and also the pure suspensions setup has been not properly set, so I can only give a thanks to the Lotus that brought me to cross the finish line.  :)

Same for me, as for last date setup last time I raced at Silver in a Lotus was 2003 and usually I don't race it at all, too fear about fragile engine in a PRO race, infact I rarely shifted gears over 8500 and was very cautious downshifting.
Said that I'm not saying I was one of the fast guys  :D

As well as the Bumblebee flies because it doesn't know the science says it should not fly, so I've used bad manners with the engine of my Lotus  ::) :P but it functioned very well. Then my 2nd place has been a question of...ignorance  :o :o :o ;D

I see no problems with engines... lola, eagle or lotus, if youre not speedshifting it, its fine... now its other quiestion that im atlest 10 kph slower when not speedshifting...

I have trouble joining most other servers ( a few are OK )

I put it down to some sort of  FPS type or extra cars patch thingy's

Do you get any message like "timed out " or "bandwidth mismatch"  etc.

Is it just VROC ? or does IGOR give trouble too  ?

I can usually connect to Sergio and Arf.

I couldn't join via vroc on Tues and did so direct in gpl multi.

Guys,
the 1st thing of all to do in case of connection problems is...to disable temporarily anything that could be a problem, it means Antiviruses, Firewalles and so on and to try to connect. If the connection is enabled it obviously means one of those programs you've shutdown creates a block and then you may concentrate to solve that problem enabling one program at a time and retesting the connection with that software enabling some ports or creating an exception. If you doesn't do this, it is quiet simply you will get troubles because it seems sometning is functioning while it is not and vice-versa.

Anyway, when I'm onlyne hosting, did you see my server pings ?

If they could connect to some servers, but not others, then it sounds more like ISP issue, blocking connections to certain locations.

Not all servers have the same settings by default and those could also depends on the region you've bought the device.
Just yesterday evening after I hosted a little PSC session at Surfers Paradise, one of ours pilots told me on iGOR he could not join my server, so I told him just what I wrote early (shutdown the Firewall and the Antivirus) and then...I've seen him showing up inside my server as well. In many cases, Firewalles and Antiviruses generates problems hosting a session or joining to another one so please start form this guideline to discover connection problems. Once we are secure firewall and Antivirus are not involved, then we will make the next step taking a watch to the hosting router's settings.

Other problems did occur to me when last season I had to join for the first few PSC's races. Usually I could join but...immediately before to race I cold not join anyore. Fortunately the managers made the correct thing enabling me to join the UKGPL server.

I was actually thinking that the issue was with VROC and whatever changes vrocip.exe did, since all was fine before that and not after.  Nothing has changed with my firewall or antivirus, hence I'd have thought they wouldn't be at fault.  Sounds like you guys know a fair bit more about computers and all that than I do though...and I am listening honest  ;D.

I'll take some time tonight to mess about with things, hopefully I won't make anything worse!!

You're making me laughing a lot Bob but, unfortunately I'm still at 1:11 low and I've some hope to go down to 1:10 as well practicing a lill more and trimming well the setup, gears the most. Anyway it is a pleasure to drive a Porsche!!!  :D
