A very exciting race with overtaking on almost every lap. I wasn't quick enough to hang onto the leading pack and before long I found myself in the second group, battling with Evil, JonnyO, Syd and Fulvio. Alain dropped out of the lead group and joined in the fun but he managed to break the tow and pull away again. After a while Syd and Fulvio dropped out leaving me, Evil and JonnyO to battle to the line. JonnyO put in a fantastic drive to keep the Gordini in the fight. I had an advantage in the Lancia but I couldn't pull away from Evil's Vanwall.
I was watching Pribluda and I could see the leaders catching us and I was hoping we could stay ahead and complete the full distance. But no, they caught us on the back straight on their last lap. I pulled left to let them past but that gave Evil the draught to the line and he beat me by a car length. Unlucky for JonnyO, I don't know if you were planning a last lap dash to the line but if you were you didn't get the chance.

In reality unless the car ahead blows their engine on the line or makes a massively bad start it is probably best to play safe and stay in-line. There will be plenty of opportunity to pass here. The car ahead is a sitting duck on the straights, there is nothing to be gained from a lightning start that will give you a 30 metre gap that will disappear on the next straight.

A very scrappy race for me. I always find the little cars very hectic to drive. I was in a decent position on about lap 3 when a car ahead of me spun and I did a pirouette in sympathy. After that I went steadily backwards, mostly my fault but I did get punted off once when the car ahead of me slowed and I had to back off which invited the car behind me to nudge my gearbox. I had a couple of good battles with Andreas and Bob towards the end but any chance of fighting for a mid-pack finish was gone.

Even the pirouette and crossing the chicane on sand did not make it (80) invalid...
Very interesting, it looks like relying on the GPL Invalid Lap counter and by inference check points is a flawed strategy. However, it would be interesting to confirm the unreliability. Can I ask for some volunteers to check the race replays for the two races for tonight? It would involve reviewing the whole replay from each driver's F10 view and comparing that to the GPLRA report. It would give us a good comparison on a track that has an obvious corner cutting opportunity. If we had 10 volunteers to cover a maximum of 18 + 16 = 34 drivers, it shouldn't be too arduous. It would be too much for one person.

Season 44 - 1955GP (Privateers) - Round 5 – IndianapolisThe fifth race in the 1955 Grand Prix series takes us to Indianapolis in the USA. Constructed in 1909, Indianapolis was the second purpose built banked oval racing circuit after Brooklands and the first to be called a 'speedway'. It has a permanent seating capacity of 257,325 with infield seating raising the grand total capacity to an approximate 400,000. It is the highest-capacity sports venue in the world. An estimated 80,000 spectators attended the first 500-mile (800 km) race on Memorial Day, May 30, 1911. Forty cars competed with Ray Harroun winning at an average speed of 74.602 miles per hour (120.060 km/h). The 500 mile race remained a regular event at the "brickyard" during the 20s, 30s and 40s. Eventually it became part of the Formula One World Championship between 1950 and 1960. None of the Indy drivers of that era raced in Formula One and only Ferrari's F1 driver, Alberto Ascari, raced in the 500 in 1952. The 1955 Indy 500 was won by Bob Sweikert in a Kurtis Kraft powered by an Offenhauser engine. However, the race is notable to many as the race in which Bill Vukovich was killed in a crash while seemingly on his way to winning an unprecedented third consecutive Indy 500. Five-time world champion Juan Fangio practiced at the speedway in 1958, but ultimately decided against racing there. Please Note: Brake fade is not usually a problem here, overheating tyres are normally the biggest difficulty. There is no need to get too close to the car in front unless you are overtaking , the slipstream is very strong. Being a little further back might give you the opportunity to avoid a spinning car. We already allow unlimited, unpenalized SHFT-Rs in this league and now we're not going to enforce track limits at three places here? Say it's not so . . .
I'm not a moderator/this is not an official reply, but the server/checkpoints setting is nothing new / hasn't changed. That's right, nothing has changed. The rules are the same regardless of the track. However, where there is confusion the track boundary (i.e. track limits) need to be clarified in the race post (as recommended here). I don't think there is any confusion here, " In general the boundary of a track is defined by white lines, this means if the kerbs are outside the white lines they are outside the track boundary". So drivers can ride the kerbs at the chicane but they must always have 2 wheels on or inside the white lines. Now whether GPL will log that as an off-track lap is another point. We don't have any control over how GPL logs off-track laps, nor do we have any control over where track builders put their checkpoints. Personally I don't think agressively riding the kerbs is the fastest line. A gentle touch is fine but bumping over them unsettles the car too much IMO. Obviously missing out the chicane altogether is definately corner cutting and is not allowed. We have always hosted races with checkpoints disabled (see here) because network latencies can give false black flags. However, we are going to do some tests at some point to see if this is still a problem with modern broadband connections.
