if you have to make rules for the ports to be forwarded in the router , advanced setting in the firewall section . the admain password can be found on the small bit of plastic which is housed in the back of the router . then use the "manage games and applications" button to take to the screen to make the rules for hosting gpl . once you have made the rule then apply it .

you can find "Home Network - Devices" page where you can see the computers/devices names and if you want/need refresh them using the said button on that page .

AMD GPU user have to wait or take a 3.19 kernel version with fglrx Catalyst 15.9

the open AMD driver works fine with gpl .

I would have thought somebody like you wouldn't want to install a proprietary "blob" .

Is it possible to have windows AND linux on the same pc hdd ?

So If I re install Win7  could I still run Knoppix as an alternative , or is there a better way to do this , say on seperate hard drives for e.g.

yes you can run linux and windows on the same pc , i run linux on a separate hard drive but you can run it on the same hard drive . i would recommend that you put is on a separate one if possible because it would then be less easy for you to mess up your pc . that way when you install it you would unplug your other drives so there would be no chance of you messing up windows .

knoppix is quite a light weight verstion of linux and as a new linux user it might be best to try something like ubuntu or linuxmint

http://www.ubuntu.com/
https://www.linuxmint.com/

both have loads of software which can be installed via their software centres/package managers .

good luck

I wasn't sure what knoppix did , somehow had the idea it repaired windows back to original with all my stuff in there ?

sorry bernie linux wasn’t written to save windows rather to bury it Smiley  , that said if microsoft had done a better job you would never have needed use it .

at least now you can move your files to your gpl hard drive or back them up to physical media (cd/dvd) . so linux isnt all bad ..

good luck saving your stuff before you reinstall windows .

just had a look .. bottom left there is a filing cabinet icon , click on this . you should then see you hard drives listed , to mount click (or double click) to see the contents of the drive .

i don't know knoppix , but with some linux systems you have to mount the hard drives before you can see the files on them .

if i have this right you C drive (boot disc) had windows 7 on it and is now blank apart from a new partition on it .

if so .. the unplug your gpl drive and your backup drive (just to be safe) .

download the windows 10 iso from microsofts site (get the 64bit version if you have a 64bit cpu , most people have one btw)

burn the iso to a dvd (or make a live usb stick , if you don't understand this .. just burn it to a dvd)

boot your pc from the windows 10 dvd and install it . there should be an option to wipe disk or use full disk (use it) .

you might also need your motherboard disc (if you have it) or have to download some drivers from the internet .

goodluck .

Get a Linux live system on USB stick (like Knoppix) to rescue your data!

this is the way you want to go to save your data bernie , you will have to boot from the usb stick (you will have to change boot order in the bios) but then you will be able to save your data to an external usb harddrive or dvds . always good to have backups of your data ...

If you want to install a vanilla original GPL you must do it in Win95 or 98  Wink

(b) if Microsoft are pushing it so hard its more for their benefit than mine. Found out last week that you now have to pay an annual licence fee for Microsoft Office. Wouldn't be surprised if my old Office software did not work on Windows 10.

however much i hate microsoft .. unless you are doing office 360 , the version of office you have wont stop working because you dont want to pay as you go bill . and you can install any older versions of office on windows 10 .

that said you might wish to take a look at https://www.libreoffice.org/  for a free office style suite , if you use lots of macros in excel it's not for you , but it does use open standards that the Gov has agreed to use in all it's offical docs .

john

p.s. you can install any full verstion of office under windows 10 you have bought , you just need the disc and licence number .
