1  UKGPL / UKGPL Announcements / Re: Season 26 Amateur Trophy Registration on: January 13, 2014, 05:50:48 PM +0000
Signed up, but won't be able to attend all races this season.
2  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Novices and Inters Trophy (65) - Monza - Dec 17 on: December 18, 2013, 02:39:54 PM +0000

I simply don't have the time to tweak setups and re-test ad-nauseum to shave off those missing seconds. I've enjoyed the cars (well the two that I chose anyway) and most of the circuits.

I found that setup changes don't make a huge difference to lap time. I tend to use 1 setup for every race, the only real difference is gear ratios, and it only takes a couple of laps for me to set those. My advice is find a setup you can be constant with, and use it for every track, you're much better off being constant than being able to do one or two fast laps. It took me many season for that message to sink in with me.

I took a screen shot from my reply of the finish, just to show how close it was  Grin

Very happy with the result last night, it has been a great season, and a very close one in the Novice championship. Well done to both Billy, and Walter it has been great racing with both of you, and I hope for more close racing in the years to come.

As for my race, I was excited about Monza, I love this track and practiced so much I was dreaming about this track Smiley I got a pretty good tow from Dave Rainer in qualifying, I’ve been much faster off line but I was happy with 2nd on the grid, and decided to concentrate on my race pace.

I did have an eye on the championship for this race, and talking with Arf before the race, I did say that I wasn’t going to race any intermediate drivers. However I have noticed in previous races that if you are slow at the start it’s asking for problems. I got a fantastic start, and was pretty much alongside Arf straight away, I thought I could get in front before braking for the corner, I left the inside clear for him just in case, but noticed that he dropped away. It’s such as shame that your engine blew, but it does look like you had a good race coming back.

Arf blowing up had messed up my plan, which was to let him past along the back straight and hoped that he drafted us both clear of the pack, where I wouldn’t have to risk anything being around other drivers. Well that plan was in the dust, I was first but the pack was very close behind me. The only driver in the pack that I was worried about was DaveC, as he was the only other novice driver. I decided to try to stay out in front and see if I could gap them. I couldn’t quite get away without taking too many risks, and in the end Rog got a great run on me, so I let him past. While I was wide Dave Rainer and DaveC both also got past. I followed these guys, repassing, and being past for the next few laps. Don’t know what happened to DaveC but all of a sudden he disappeared from the group.

With just Rog, and Dave Rainer, both intermediate drivers, for company I relaxed a little. I noticed on Prib that Arf and Walter was gaining on us, as we weren’t really going that fast at that stage. I was getting ready for a challenged from both of them. Again they pretty much disappeared from the radar, so I’m sure something happen. With only a handful of laps to go, and no pressure from behind I was pretty happy at this stage to run my own race and not risk anything. I let Rog and Dave Rainer past, and was happy to follow them. I noticed that Rog was pretty quick, and he started to break the tow he was giving to Rainer. I started to think about passing Dave again to keep myself in touch with Rog. With only a lap or two to go, I decided to go for it Smiley perhaps not the best idea I’ve ever had, but I wanted to race, rather than just drive home safely. So I gave it a good go, but Rog just had the edge in the end, by 0.003 seconds. It was a great finish to a great season for me.

Congrats to Rog for the race win, congrats to Johnny on the inter title and to everyone else who raced. I’ve very happy to finial win the Novice title, it’s only taken me 5 years, over 100 races and 9 seasons to do it Smiley
5  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Novices and Inters Trophy (65) - Zolder - Dec 3 on: December 04, 2013, 08:39:11 AM +0000
Quite a good race for me, but a lonely one but that was by design. Also I wanted to say a massive thank you to the back markers, you guys where awesome when you were being lapped, and I really do appreciate it.

I have noticed in my last few races that I have been getting in incidents with other people who I’m not really racing against. So for this race, I tried a new tactic of letting intermediate drivers go and concentrating on my own race.

For Quali I did a PB, and was pretty please with my time. I don’t think I could of beat that so I settled in for some race fuel preparation. By the time quali had finished, I was ready.

My race started fine, I kept in my 3rd place, with Dave Rainer pretty close behind. At this point I was thinking of going for it and trying to open up a gap, but I decided to stick to my plan, so I rolled off the throttle and let him go. Next behind me was Paul, I thought he was a little way behind, but because I was trying to let Dave get a gap, Paul closed in on me really quickly. Sorry Paul if I was usually slow, I was being quite cautious.

After Paul had a little excursion, next back was Walter, how I had a bout a 5 second gap. I decided that 5 seconds was a good gap, and tried to manage it. I was quite pleased with my consistency and managed to keep the gap at roughly 5 seconds. Ahead of me there was a large gap that I didn’t have a hope in reducing, and behind I had a nice gap that I could manage. I was pretty happy in my space and started to relax a little bit. Then I saw a spinning car up ahead, without one if its wheels. I didn’t think too much off it and made sure I was safety past. Only about half a lap later if dawned on me that I was suddenly 3rd and not 4th. I don’t know if Walter and Dave had some sort of incident, but suddenly I had a really large gap.

After that I took it really easy and cruised home in 3rd. Really happy with my race, 3rd place was unexpected but a nice surprise. I’m also happy that I took the novice win, and that championship is wide open now. I’m not sure how to drive at Monza, I really want an outright win, but common sense tells me to race only the people in the championship. I will see how it plays out.

Congratulations to Johnny on the Inters championship Smiley well done mate, you have had a great season.

Seems there is a certain amount of pre-race blagging & bluffing going on, with various drivers complaining how slow they are. Turn up on race day & these guys are about 3 seconds faster than they claim.
I was under the impression that my 2.14 practice times would be quite reasonable

I promise that my off line practice time where 2:15 on a good lap, the only difference is that I tend to practice with full tanks. I don;t know if it's the added competition or just I concentrate more but I do often find I'm able to go faster in Quali that I have been off line.

I'm disappointed to be missing Silverstone, I wish you the best of luck, and I'll have to do my best to claw back the points I'm going to miss  out on.

I've had problems when I am using the latest graphics drivers. I've installed some quite old graphics drivers, and so far it's been working well.
8  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Novices and Intermediates Trophy (65) - Bathurst - Nov 5 on: November 06, 2013, 10:42:18 AM +0000
Congrats to Ivan and the podium.

I was surprised by my quali time, I managed a mid 2:12 fairly quickly, which was by far my best time in all my practices. I didn't think I would beat that, but wanted to still learn the track, and managed to pick up a tow from Paul. I was really pleased with my 2:11 time, it was so much faster than I thought that I could manage here.

My start was OK, I managed to get ahead of Rainer into the first corner, and I think we had a little bump, but it didn't really effect me and I carried on undisturbed. Johnny had managed to get the lead, but Ivan was all over him. It was only a matter of time before Ivan got past and left us all for dead. I managed to pick up a tow from Johnny and got a run on him. I took second place and held it for a lap or two. Finally Johnny managed to get into my tow, and got past me on the straight, I gave him the inside but didn't make it easy for him, and in the end that was a mistake. He ran wide and had no where else to go apart from me.

After my stop and go I was around Paul, but ahead at this point. The red mist came down and I ended up having one of those horrible slow motion spins that you can't do anything about. I was pretty much side on, in the middle of the track, at a very narrow part. I tried to do a quick spin, but the track was too narrow. I saw on Prib that Paul was very near, so I decided that the best thing to do was stay still until he past, which seem to be OK. I got going again and started to chase Paul down. We had a good little battle until he disappeared, which I later found out was his engine going pop. after that I was on my own, unable to catch anyone ahead, and under no real pressure from behind.

I'm pretty sure that I'm not going to be able to make the next race, so I wish you guys luck and I'll see you in Zolder.

Sub 2:10 is just insane!

Bleeding heck... Who's doing 2:10's? I'm currently lucky to get a 2:15, and I can't do more than one without a mistake. Interesting track, but my god I'm slow here.
10  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Novices and Intermediates Trophy (65) - Edmonton - Oct 15 on: October 16, 2013, 08:54:42 AM +0100
God I hate this track, I just could not get a rhythm here at all.
Got a PB in Quali, and was mid grid. My start was OK, I managed to pass a few people. Going into the first corner someone was being really cautious, and slowed down really early. I had to jink to the left to miss them, and that ended up with me in a tank slapper. Luckily I didn’t hit anyone, but did spin and ended up last.

Started up again and chased Paul for a little while, and then Nigel but I just couldn’t keep up any pace, and if I gained one lap, I would loss it the next. Me and Nigel passed Paul on his roof, but once he was upright again he was much quicker than me and forced an error. I don’t know what happened to Nigel….

After that I had a lonely couple of laps until the finish. It really was nice to see such a large grid, hope that will continue. I'm looking forward to the next race, and I hope to do much better.

Congrats to Podium guys, there were some serious fast drivers here and you have my respect.

I hate this track, I can't get around without spinning Sad

I'll try my best but not expecting a decent result here, but I suppose you can't like all tracks can you?
12  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Novices and Intermediates Trophy (65) - Spa - Oct 1 on: October 10, 2013, 09:57:29 AM +0100
Electric bikes.  Seen them at the Isle of Man TT a couple of times.  Technically very impressive but the noise and smell is what makes motor racing what it is and it is definitely missing from these machines.

The e-bikes have become more and more impressive every year. I remember the first year and people laughed at them when they went past. They were so slow, even from the start with their full power. Now some factories have become involve the standard of bikes and really got so much better, the Honda bikes in particle are works of art.

Just a quick question. Why are the results being shown as everyone in the Novices, and then Inters having their own table? Shouldn't it be the other way around, with the Inters having the full table and Novices being stripped out?
14  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Novices and Intermediates Trophy (65) - Spa - Oct 1 on: October 02, 2013, 08:36:50 AM +0100
I did a ton of practice at this track, as I really like Spa and wanted to win here. So I'm still feeling a little gutted.

Could not get a tow in quali, so I did my best and was disappointed with my time. I was doing 3:37's in off line practice, but this was with a tow.

Started 2nd, when I put my car into gear it jumped forward. I stopped it as soon as I could, but I think it counted as a jump start Sad as I was getting boards telling me to pit, and then I was DQ'd. In the past I remember being told to ignore those boards as the moderators can sort it out after the race. I'm not too bothered if you can or not, as I am really disappointed with my race.

As far as the race went, I managed to get ahead of Ivan at the start, and was leading with Johnny right being me. We where pulling a tiny margin on Paul in third, so I set about trying to break the tow to Johnny. I just couldn't do it, but as long as I got a good drive out of the corners I did manage to stay ahead of him. After a couple of laps Johnny managed to get a better drive onto the main straight and he got me going into the long right hander. I knew it was OK, as I would be able to follow his tow and quite easily past him again at the next straight, but for some reason I fought him going into the corner. I tried to carry too much speed on the outside and hit the hedge, causing me to spin out. I tried to spin back in the right direction, which caused me to spin again, and again, and again. The red mist came down and I had another spin at the next series of corners too Sad

After that I was a long way back in 4th. Paul was ahead of me, and Ivan ahead of him. I chased them down, and managed to pass Ivan and a small mistake at the hairpin cost me my chance of chasing Paul down. I was seeing DQ'd on my board for just about all the race, and know that my races laps weren't counted, but I did get a 3:38 when chasing down Ivan. I thought I saw the checkered flag so came to a stop, but thinking about it I might of been a lap early.

Still gutted over this race, silly mistakes cost me any chance here but there is always next time Smiley

Well done to Johnny, Paul and Ivan. Good race between you guys and hoping to enjoy the next one with you.
15  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Novices Trophy (65) - Panchine - Sep 17 on: September 18, 2013, 10:07:58 AM +0100
Impressive times last night in both qualifying and the race. Well done to Ivan for his qualifying record and huge well done to Paul for fastest lap.

My qualifying went really well and I achieved a PB, there was no way that I think I could have improved, so was happy to be 5th on the grid. Start of the race was uneventful for me, thankful, and I got away in 3rd. I settled into the slipstream of Dave in front, and was quite surprised to get a good run on the first straight. I managed to overtake him and tried to keep with Johnny. I just could not keep with Johnny’s pace and he was gone very quickly.

I was ready for Dave to fly past me on the next straight but found that I was running in clean air for a while, I don’t know if he had a moment or not but it took him a few laps to get on my tail. I’ve got to be honest I was about to move over and let Dave chase down Johnny, but I noticed that Johnny was too far in the distance to catch, and behind me and Dave there was quite a large gap also. I hope Dave didn’t mind but I decided to have a little fun and race with him. I was so surprised that I was able to keep him at bay on the straights, I really did expect him to fly past me.

Our mini battle latest most of the race, he got a great run at me and managed to get past on the first straight with a couple of laps to go, and I just couldn’t keep with him on the twisty bits. So I finished 3rd overall, I had a race long battle with Dave and I hope we both had fun.

Looking forward to Spa already Smiley
