16  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 17 (2009) Amateurs Trophy - Mexico City - Apr 28 on: April 28, 2009, 09:48:38 PM +0100
Damn, damn, damn.

Thanks very much to Geoff for the reminder, but I had not forgotten about the race.

I desperately pushed the car to its absolute limits as the road flowed before me and disappeared behind. Every other car was caught, assessed and then despatched into my rear view mirror. "More, faster" I thought to myself, but in the end it was not enough.

Unfortunately, that's not a description of driving the Lotus 33. It's actually a BMW 330d and that was my drive home from work to try to make the race.

By the time I signed onto iGOR the server was "mutating". Bugger. Fun drive home though.

Nooooo! Gutted to miss this, just been so busy in work recently.

That's a new one on me - never heard of starting in the middle of nowhere. Sorry to hear you're not having the best luck Ginsters.

Got home from work just in time and managed to tweak my Spa gears by the end of qually. Got round to the tight left hander out the back and I was concentrating on the BRM heading to the apex when BANG - there's a Lotus facing the wrong way right in front. Don't think I had a chance with that. Seemed to cause quite a big crash.

Ho hum, happens to the best of us. Also happens to me.

I wasted no time at all. Downloaded 65 v2 then Albi at 9.25pm! By the time I got to the server qually was over so I jumped in the car with it still set up for the last race at Spa. My engineer told me to just follow everyone for a lap or two. I hadn't so much as looked at the map, so it was a bit of a journey of discovery. Trundled round in last then passed a recovering Brabham and continued to follow Geoff who fell off at T1. He was well onto the grass so I carried on and then boom - he bounced off the fence as if it was made of Acme Elasto-Stretch and I got stuck in the barrier on the other side.

Shame, looks like a good track.

Is there any way to tell if the new patch has been applied correctly? It certainly didn't feel like anything different to me and others, especially on the first lap breezed past with ease.

Anyway. Got in from playing in the snow and settled down at 8.55pm to have a quick trawl round my regular internet stops. Fortunately, simracing is on the list as I completely forgot about this and jumped on the server without having turned a lap since, well, can't remember.

Didn't do anything exciting in the race really but briefly ascended to 3rd in the last two laps. Geoff was fighting back and we were two abreast and both nicely on our own halves of the track when he warped right across me and I was in the hay bales. A bit annoying after such a long race but a quick trip through the replay showed it was just a no-fault lag crash, so there we go.

I would have settled for finishing ahead of Tim before the race, so that'll do (... clutching at straws a little here)

"Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends". ( a pathetic and wothless prize for whoever identifies the source of that quote).

Oh come on. "Whispering" Bob Harris got me through university almost single handed. Emerson, Lake and Palmer - what's my prize?

Sorry, folks, I have to cancel. My other interest, Liverpool FC, is playing an important game on wednesday, and I won't miss it. Someone else can take my place.

Which part of Liverpool are you originally from?  Tongue

GPL specs from the CD Box:

Pentium processor - 90Mhz
16MB of RAM
100MB hard drive space
SVGA card 640 x 480 256 colours

Higher res textures, runtime apps, higher screen resolution (1680 x 1050 has 6 times more pixels to colour in) all make a difference but all the PCs here are orders of magnitude better than the specs. Might be a lack of optimisation as most hardware was not even conceived of when GPL was born.

Congratulations to Tim on a great win both in the race and the championship!

This season was my first foray into GPL racing online and I loved it. Came in with no expectations but heartily chuffed to bag the win at Silverstone.

Definitely coming back for more and will try to find time for a bit more practice next season.

Thanks to all the other racers and especially the admins for doing such a great job - without the admins devoting so much free time we'd all be racing offline - never forget it!

I should be returning for this one. Got caught up in hour after hour of practice for a 24 hour sim race I did last weekend (which was an experience let me tell you!)
