Hi Christian, welcome aboard.

There are practice servers up most evenings, see here for details.

Car choice is generally totally free, although when Season 1 starts we might ask drivers to pick a car and stick to it.
10082  SRou / Announcements / Rules updated for Speedbug and 1.4 on: May 01, 2005, 08:44:00 PM +0100
I've updated the rules to mandate version 1.4.0 of GTR.

I've also added something about the so-called 'speedbug' too - I'd value any input on the rule from people who've experienced this, either in GTR or any other ISI sim.

Does that also stop the VNC session closing?

Presumably it does - the FragThe.Net server doesn't do it.

I'm new to sim racing, not sure how it has worked in the past. What were you guys planning on with the UKGTR offering? Using your own broadband lines to host races for the league? Or have you rented servers in the past and expected to do so here?

In UKGPL we were lucky enough to have our own hardware hosted by kindly individuals and organisations.

We had planned (and still plan) to rent a server for UKGTR use, but the lack of a StarForce-free dedicated server is severaly hampering that. SOme leagues are spending extorionate and unsustainable amounts on hosting as a result.

My greatest concern in all of this though is the speedbug. It isn't addressed now a whole 4 patches in and I'm just wondering whether this is because it is unfixable.

Well, so far I don't think we've seen it at all in any Season 0 or fun races. Drivers just need to be honest and not attempt to benefit from it - I'll draft something for the rules. My understanding is that if you experience the "speedbug", you will know it - it's not like you can accidently, unknowingly win a race using it.

Would be interesting to conduct a proper study to find out just how frequently it occurs and try and narrow down the circumstances which cause it.

I suspect it's "unfixibility" is largely down to the developers not having full access to and understanding of the game engine they're using. But I'm speculating.

See my response in this thread.

will this help us in running a season being able to reserve a server strictly for us?

I'd like to think so, although I'm alarmed that we might end up dependent on them.

There are some critical factors in terms of this being a success in the context of UKGTR; one is whether we can get server replays, and another is whether we will get any further improvements in server manageability, especially in terms of setting session lengths and weight ballasts.

The subscription fee isn't brilliant news, but on the other hand if it's just one fee to SimBin instead of one to each league you want to run in to pay for hosting, it may work out okay.

Will be interesting to see what the subscription fee is to use this service.

And also to find out if they plan to offer "proper" leagues like ours some sort of hosting deal. Huh

change the following lines (as below) in the .plr file that the dedicated server uses (depending on how your server is set up it might be the player called "PlayerNotUsed")...

Closed MP Qualify Sessions="0" // if true, the session will be closed during
qualify, so as to not disturb the participants
Skip Formation Lap="1"
MULTI Formation Lap="0"
Extra Stats="1" // Saves separate verbose stats for any session (instead of
simple stats for most recent race only)
Timescale Ded Sessions="0" // Dedicated server sessions get timescaled with
race length
Lightning Probability="0.00000" // Probability of seeing lightning (0.0-1.5)
Thunder Probability="0.00000" // Probability of hearing thunder (0.0-1.5)

I've seen it suggested that you should also set the following, or you risk a full yellow being thrown because of stationary grid, but I've seen no evidence for this.
MULTI Full Course Yellows="0"

Also look at Aagramn's post below.

Note that you don't need any of this unless you're hosting a game.
