1  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Privateers Trophy (67) - Spa - Sep 8 on: September 09, 2013, 07:32:36 PM +0100
Well, I had a respectable and stable setup on the Brabham and was happy to coast around and pick up what I could. Very soon, though, I was trundling along happily in 4th! Sometimes people would get close behind me but soon they made a mistake and fell back again.

For half of the race things were fine. Then I made a mistake trying to take a corner slightly differently and spun. Kept my position but that was the start of the end. I started thinking about what I was doing and more and more mistakes crept in. Eventually I was running last. Such a pity. Not boring though.

Fun race but I am now drenched in sweat and VERY tired.

What he said. By far the most fun and interesting [read "competitive"] race I've taken part in for a few years.

Normally I end up circulating on my own and only seeing the leaders pass me. This time, for the first half of the race at least, I was on the tarmac and putting in consistent and decent laps. Chasing people down, fending people off, impressing (and enjoying) myself!

Then I went spinning and off-road with increasing frequency, losing lots of places on the way. Finally I did enough damage to need a Shift-R and a S'N'G so just tried to finish where I was.

This race has re-ignited my love for this game, not to say restored some faith in my ability!

I think the start time is wrong. It says 2100 GMT. Should be 2000 GMT = 2100 BST?

Bigger grids tend to produce better races

Sorry, Paul, but that's just not true at all. Bigger grids tend to produce more incidents, more traffic, more problems, etc. The racing does not improve just because you increase the numbers, it has never been the case.

If I may fork the conversation, the definition of "better" is subjective. For me, it would mean merely having one or more people to chase or dice with for most of a race, rather than the usual lonely driving I do every week. However, having someone at your level to actually drive against does, indirectly, mean that you will have more incidents.

Purely from a statistical point of view, bigger grids DOES mean that more participants are likely to find someone of their level and therefore someone to make the race interesting. So, in a real sense, bigger grids do allow more people to have better races. Though I understand that those more talented will also find themselves having more unwanted or "silly" issues to deal with on-track.

For the record, I whole-heartedly agree with Hristo in that he merely made a general observation and several people took it personally. To my mind that does belie a hint of guilt. However, I also have no complaint about good drivers having their first season in with the Privateers. As long as they move up next season, as BadBlood said.

Now shut up, all of you! Far too much bitching over recent months...

Privateers is not meant for rookies, it's meant for slower people, otherwise it would be a rather empty division every season.

What he said. I've been a member here for quite a few years now (missed a few seasons when I had no PC) and also rarely drive anything EXCEPT the 67 cars. So I am in no way a rookie. However, I'm so slow that it's still embarrassing every single week. Therefore, while I yearn for a few more challenging tracks, I cannot possibly consider asking to participate in a different division.

If people can post times which would be competitive in Works, and able not to spin off a lot, I was under the impression they get "encouraged" to move up.

Excellent report, Maddog, enjoyed that.

My evening was a mixture really. Qualifying saw me low but in among a tight group, meaning that I was, for once, somewhere near a decent pace in the Ferrari - something I've rarely driven before. Late on, I tried to make some daring setup changes. When the 30-second board went up for the race, I had to quickly switch setups and fix the fuel levels. Something glitched and I couldn't complete it in time.

Starting from the pit lane, then, on a hastily selected, less-than-optimal setup, I started after the pack. Was miles behind but knew that I had a setup that was very well planted so anyone making mistakes would be a juicy target. As it happened, there must have been plenty of carnage early on, because when I looked up I was already ahead of some people.

In general the race was quiet and tedious, with the odd patch of engine management and, probably due to concentration failure, a few too many minor spins. However, late on, I noticed that Michael, who had been almost a lap ahead, was suddenly just 30 seconds in front with plenty of laps left. When I found him he was spewing smoke from the engine bay and was trying to limp home, I think. I enjoyed beating a wounded rival. That's how low I've sunk.

Anyway, I seem to have been the only Ferrari to make it to the end. I believe it's meant to be a little fragile but for me, with probably the least experience with it, to get home safely seems strange. Oh well. I'll happily take what might be the biggest points haul I've ever had. See you next time!

Oh how embarrassing for my lack of preparation to be included in such a list for all to point and laugh at for evermore...

Great. Didn't do any practice on what is possibly my favourite little track and managed to not only be slow but then blow my engine on about lap 3. Bugger.
9  UKGPL / UKGPL Announcements / Re: Server Fund on: January 18, 2013, 10:17:12 PM +0000
I am in a good mood. I would like to put some money in the pot. Never have before and always felt a bit evil but then, cash is actually slightly less tight these days than in the past.

Am I right in believing that we share servers with another group? We presumably pay them rather than simracing.org.uk? Or not? Tell me how to pay/who to contact and I'll throw some money.

Part of this is due to actually having more fun on GPL than iRacing (despite being less competitive here). Won't be renewing over there when the current season ends, but am about a quarter of an inch from buying rFactor2...
10  UKGPL / UKGPL Announcements / Re: SEASON 24 Pre-Season Discussion on: December 10, 2012, 10:38:22 PM +0000
Here's my twopenneth in an excellent discussion. Everyone's made valid points and presented their positions well. Now I have the podium, you watch that fall apart...

I've recently re-joined the league after nearly two years away. I've never been a very fast driver but I like a challenge. My speed (or lack of) convinces me that the place I should be is the lowest tier of any competition until told otherwise and I am very happy engaging in "in-my-own-head-only" battles with people who seem to be at about my own ability level but down the running order.

In line with someone else's point, my learning curve involved figuring out that it was better to stay within myself and not need a S-R (or as few as possible) if I wanted to get a result that I felt reflected my true abilities. So the lower tiers definitely need to allow that to happen. Actually I've always lost a bit of self-respect when using a S-R and prefer to race with rules that are much harsher, forcing discipline, even if that often means that I fail to finish. Such is racing. I also prefer a longer race, with damage.

I may go on all night if I'm not careful so I'll move on to other things. What follows is as above: just my perception and feelings to be considered by the moderators. What you decide eventually is fine, whatever.

I've never tried pit stop penalties per chassis. Tokens have always seemed fine to me. I think I would have trouble remembering how many stops I was supposed to make in a given race as well as how many I had already done. Tokens are just "choose pre-race and go".

50% rule (or similar): I'm more on the purist side i.e. ideally only finishers get points. That said, I've been encouraged in the past to make an effort to attend races on tracks that I consider may be less well-attended simply because there's a good chance of grabbing more points whatever my finish due to a smaller grid. Naughty, and I have felt bad for it, but it did get me to turn up.

My understanding on team/individual was that everyone raced for themselves but some people were also in teams and those kind of "unofficially" gained points. Unless teams comprise of drivers assigned according to some perceived handicap system, what's the point? Me and some other back-marker in Team Slow vs Team Regular Podiums? pff.

Thanks for reading. I'll get back in my box now!

Well, managed to blow my engine even though I'd spent some laps being kinder to it. Oh well.

It's just a type of zipped file. Anything like Winzip, ZipGenius, WinRAR, 7Zip etc should be able to unpack it.

Don't remember either of the incidents I've been investigated and punished for! No problem though - I must be guilty.

I think I was under the impression that a SECOND shift R needed a SnG, or I'm just getting confused between my two leagues. Either way I'll be like Maldonado and learn from my punishments...

Sorry guys.
14  UKGPL / UKGPL Announcements / Re: Season 23 Privateers Trophy Registration on: August 26, 2012, 07:17:06 PM +0100
Hi guys,

I used to race here a few years ago but then my PC died. Now I'm back and raring to go. May I please join the Privateers mid-season?

Do you use iGOR or VROC and where do I find passwords? Race thread on the day of the race?

Cheers.
15  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 19 (2010) Novices Trophy (65) - Laguna Seca - May 4 on: May 04, 2010, 10:06:44 PM +0100
Was running really well early on but then made a few mistakes, dropped back slightly and managed to have a huge fishtail out of the final corner, sliding all over the place and giving some poor soul nowhere to go until they hit me. Sorry.

After that, my attempts to get out of the way got progressively worse, with me hitting unseen trackside fixtures (I had trackside objects set to many, not all) at least twice. After one, I rolled to a stop right in the middle of the road and was smashed into by, I think, Billy. Sorry again.

Pity really cos I love that track and felt like I could have had one of my best ever finishes. Instead I left early out of embarrassment.
