16  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 19 (2010) Novices Trophy (65) - Mexico City - Mar 30 on: March 30, 2010, 10:54:41 PM +0100
Well that was a huge annoying mess from my perspective. Apologies to anyone who tripped up overtaking me.

I did a Hispania F1 effort, turning my first wheel during qualifying and tweaking the setup to get a slow but improving performance. What I didn't do, though, was set my practice setup as the race setup. Therefore I got lumbered with the default setup at the start of the race and had full fuel tanks and horrendous gear ratios. The race was a joke and I nearly gave up there and then.

Fortunately, being a little bugger, I decided to continue, reasoning that a) someone might drop out, gifting me points, and b) the mileage on the car would pay dividends in future.

What a dick I am.

That pit entry has NEVER been matched   Shocked...it is the stuff of legends  lol  Roll Eyes

Sounds like the kind of thing someone has saved in a replay somewhere - any chance of it being provided for my entertainment/education?  Smiley

Don't worry Sharky, my name appears regularly in both UKGPL and GBGPL and you may have noticed that it reads the same forwards or backwards, just to make things easier. Roll Eyes

Actually, Clive, I never noticed that at all. That's class, well done. Palindromic Clive. Oh dear, now I've made you sound ill.

Normally I pride myself on my powers of observation, so I'm well dischuffed right now.

I've been driving in the UKGPL 67s for a couple of seasons now, alternating weeks with the GBGPL 67s. Only, last season I couldn't do the Thursdays needed so I changed to the 65s.

As far as I know there are several people who (at least occasionally) work both sides of the fence, but I often get confused with names, sorry. Mostly I forget whether someone is primarily known to me through GBGPL or UKGPL so I shut up rather than commit a faux pas...

Don't ask me why I'm signing up to the 65's instead of my usual 67's - truth is I don't really know. Perhaps it's just to get some inspiration after not even loading GPL since before xmas.

I took part in the last 65's season over in the GBGPL and drove the BRM in every race, mainly because I didn't have time to go and really learn the cars. I'll take whatever you throw at me in this championship, but please bear in mind that I drive using the keyboard, so one of the more stable chassis' would be a better starting point for me.

Cheers!
21  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 18 Graduates - Privateers - Kyalami - Oct 4 on: October 06, 2009, 09:14:25 PM +0100
Well, I loved that race. Easily my best ever performance. I didn't finish, nor did I qualify high up. What I did do was put together lap after lap of consistent times - a huge improvement for me. It was just disappointing to lose it and rip two wheels off within seconds of thinking "I'm doing fine here - I can make it to the finish".

Spent much of my time actually racing too! The bright blue of Maestro closing in then falling back was mesmerising and I actually fended him off and pulled away at times, boosting my ego enormously!

This was so much fun compared with my usual races, where I tend to spin once or twice early on (not always my own fault), lose touch with everyone, and then trundle to the finish watching for the leaders coming up behind.

Excellent stuff - thanks everyone. I want more!

Ensure you have the pit wall in place.

In the words of Dale Winton!

"Bring on the Wall!"

Oh. My. God.

You did NOT just quote Winton. Jeez.   :p
23  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 18 (2009) Graduates Cup (67) - Laguna Seca - Sep 20 on: September 19, 2009, 08:32:06 PM +0100
Funky little track. I'm well familiar with the modern one (via Gran Turismo) but the old '67 version is sweet. Reminds me very much of Zandvoort but with bigger gradients. Lovely.

Anyone else notice the upside-down car behind the infield fence on the straight leading to the last corner?
24  UKGPL / UKGPL Announcements / Re: Season 18 Graduates Cup Registration on: September 02, 2009, 01:57:54 AM +0100
I'm here but late - again. Oh well. I'm always keen but never fast, so I guess if I'm allowed to run, I'll be a Group B competitor.

I love the idea of long races without the Shift R - it's the way racing is supposed to be. Pass cleanly and stay on the black stuff or else. Also, I can never quite understand why so few people use the 67s. To me it's the 'core' game.

Looking forward to some of these tracks - they're new to me. Hopefully my little old graphics card can handle them...
25  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 17 (2009) Clubmans Cup - Jarama - May 31 on: May 29, 2009, 07:19:50 PM +0100
I'd like to play but since I downloaded the track a few months ago I can't get my old graphics card to run smoothly all the way around. I drop to 24 fps on the run to turn 3 and again coming down the steep hill half-way around.

I'll have to skip it because I can't imagine how bad it'll be with other cars on track. Tough little circuit though.
26  UKGPL / UKGPL Announcements / Re: Season 17 Clubman's Cup Registration on: March 01, 2009, 07:11:28 PM +0000
I'd like to join in again but have obviously completely failed to register my interest until now - the evening of race one. I'll turn up in the chatroom tonight and ask permission to race there, too.

In my defence, rubbish as I am, I'm a regular attender and faster than I was when I joined last season.
27  UKGPL / UKGPL Announcements / Re: UKGPL Membership Survey on: December 29, 2008, 06:46:02 PM +0000
I hadn't considered the presentation of UKGPL's league structure, perhaps this could be improved?

I think the easiest way would be to re-write the following page to actually show a diagram and explain the tiers of the divisions and the rules to which they run. I'd happily do that if you want. As a relatively new starter, perhaps my observations on what I needed most a few months ago would be good.

https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/starter

Actually, I think that much of the content of that site should be looked at again to try and make things a little clearer.
28  UKGPL / UKGPL Announcements / Re: UKGPL Membership Survey on: December 18, 2008, 12:45:13 AM +0000
Which is your preference out of the current UKGPL league systems, D1, Historics (Dh), Clubmans(Dc) or Novices(Dn)?  Have you a different method of organising chassis we could consider?  This is not about which mod you prefer, but how the division is organised.  D1 uses pit stops to level chassis. Dh rules some cars out of races, Dc uses pit stops to handicap leaders in fast cars, Dn uses moderator allocation.

Five tracks you'd like to race on, five you dislike?  "I can't think of a flatter, more boring, slow corner addled track than East London".  I've had Jarama added to our list though...

What is your preferred race distance?  Would you prefer to race at int, pro or gp level?  Special bonus if you choose GP and 50% or more, plus you to get to be considered for the 'Epic' division.

Re: Division systems
I was new to this league this year - new to GPL and online racing too. I only raced in the Clubmans because I thought that it was the lowest division I could find here. Clearly, from the descriptions quoted above, I was wrong and theoretically all divisions are open to me. I really think that a lot of thought needs to be put in by most leagues about how they present and explain themselves to newbies. It's so complex.

That said, I'm happy to stick with the Clubmans Cup in the short term - at least until I get some real speed and start dicing with a few people.

Re: Tracks liked or not
Actually, I recently discovered the full-length Brands Hatch and am in love. Always hated it on TV but it's beautiful to drive. I usually prefer tracks that have significant elevation changes. Also like Albi a lot even though it's flatter than an ironing board.

Dislike Spa but that's probably cos I suck at it. Same with the Glen. Oh, and Monaco.

Re: Race length
Longer is usually better in my opinion because it's more of a test and this is supposed to be a sim.
29  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 16 (2008) Clubmans \'67 - Kyalami - Dec 7 on: December 07, 2008, 02:47:17 PM +0000
I have a question. Since I started online racing, first with the GBGPL and now with you guys, I've pretty much been getting away with not knowing what I'm doing because I'm rubbish. Rubbish but eager so I guess that gets me some brownie points. Anyway...

Every online race I take part in, I always show in the results as disco-ing. This happens even when I finish the race with no issues. So far (I guess because I'm rubbish) I've still been classified and given a few minor points for the place I did actually finish in. However, what is it that I'm doing wrong to get listed as "disco"?

I suspect that I'm disconnecting from the server too soon after the chequered flag, but I don't know the post-race procedure so can someone tell me?

My natural inclination has always been to do what happens in real life and do another full lap and pull into the pits. Should I then sit in the car until the server shuts down or should I quit to the menu but stay connected? Until when? What do I do?

Cheers.
30  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 16 (2008) Clubmans \'67 - Snetterton - Nov 23 on: November 25, 2008, 11:58:10 PM +0000
Really sorry that I missed this one as I had downloaded that track only last week and I love trying new tracks. Oh well. It seems a popular circuit so I'm sure it'll come back around.

Talking of new tracks, the Clubmans is due to visit Brands Hatch in a few rounds' time. I've downloaded it and like it but I see there are a couple of versions with differing lengths (~50m). The shorter version is the oldest and is the one from ChallengeRank. Unfortunately I've grabbed the longer one and I'm betting that I need the shorter one for our race, yes?

Cheers.

P.S.
I see that there are also two versions of Snetterton Heath available - '67 and '64. Which were we supposed to use?
