1531  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 23 (2012) Formula 2 Trophy - Enna - Oct 19 on: October 17, 2012, 10:06:22 AM +0100
Had a quick look at Enna last night. Race length will be 32 laps.
Billy’s top tip for this track – turn left, turn left  … turn left  (I meant right). Seriously, you can learn this one very quickly, it’s as near as you can get to an oval but still a proper race track with braking zones.
1532  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / UKGPL Season 23 (2012) Formula 2 Trophy - Enna - Oct 19 on: October 16, 2012, 11:03:21 PM +0100
THIS POST IS FOR THE LIGHT & HEAVY RACES

Next stage of the European tour is a trip to Enna in Italy, a circuit created for the newly released Formula 2 Mod.
For future reference the following race (Round 8 ) has been rescheduled to Hockenheim, not Bremgarten.

Enna Pergusa circles lake Pergusa in Siciliy. Historically it did host a non-championship Formula 1 Race, the Mediterranean Grand Prix. A version of the 60’s track layout was recently released by Ginetto for the release of the Formula 2 Mod so it seemed right & proper to include in our first F2 Championship. There are no chicanes & no left hand turns. Being a short, high speed track it should produce some close racing & drafting opportunities. Watch out for turn 4, the entry looks a lot faster than the exit.

The handicaps for each Division will be:
LIGHTS Hristo – Ferrari or Brabham BT14. Evil Clive &  Natan -  Ferrari, Brabham BT14 or Cooper.
HEAVY Rainier – Ferrari or Brabham BT14. Rog UK & Phil Thornton -  Ferrari, Brabham BT14 or Cooper.

The series will be run on two separate grids; The Lights (on T7) & the Heavys (on UKGPL 3). Please ensure you join the correct race. The Driver list is shown below & the Championship Table can be found here F2 European Tour

Unlimited resets are allowed but every Shift R must be followed by a Stop & Go in the pit lane. If you Reset on the last lap a 30 second time penalty will be awarded.
Incidents should be reported in the usual way.

In line with other divisions the races will be subject to full moderation  in the red zone which will be all of lap one. The Moderator may chose to investigate any other incident, in addition to reported incidents & red zone incidents.

Please note that for Season 23 UKGPL has introduced a system of penalties within each series  for drivers accumulating yellow cards – see here
Penalty Points. Drivers incurring these penalties will receive a PM advising when a penalty has been applied & what race it should served.

I think "CRAP" is a tolerable amount of swearing for this forum.
Got my set ups mixed up & just before the flag went down realised I was only fueled for 6 laps. Thought I might be able to exit & rejoin form pit lane - but no luck. Thats' cost me 17 tokens! So ... Crap.
Best of luck to David, Dave & Fabio - hope you have better luck & collect get some good team points.
1534  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 23 (2012) Novices Trophy (65) - Charade - Oct 9 on: October 10, 2012, 12:23:06 PM +0100
My approach to learning a new track is generally to see how fast I can go through a corner without crashing & whether you can carry a higher gear / brake a bit later. A style which is poorly suited to tracks like Clermont & Nurburgring.
First clean lap was 3.40’s which I reduced to a 3.34. Based on qualifying times from the last Novs race that looked quite competitive. Last night was a bit of a reality check with Rob, Al & Johnny getting mid 3.20’s!
Lap 1 was a bit of a disaster – finding a ditch about 300ft deep that really need a Landrover to get out. Remaining laps were relatively clean & I had some great battles with Paul. He powered past me after a couple of laps but went mountaineering half a lap later. After that I had mirrors full of Dave C for virtually the rest of the race. I’m guessing he was a bit faster, but was really patient on a track which has very few places to pass.
Hopefully the grid will be a more competitive at Silverstone & we can give Rob a race. Also, I won’t need a route map to find my way back on track.

PS. Johnny - as Al says I think your PC problems are related to power saving settings.

Sub 3.30? Oh dear.
I’ve done a couple of stints at Clermont with the sole purpose of being able to avoid the ditches, banks & various other obstacles & 3.35 is as fast as I dare to push it.
11 laps is going to require a lot of concentration &/or luck.

Should add a note of congratualtions to team-mate Dave Curtis for his first win in UKGPL.

Bernie,
Assume you know which incident the report refers to?
If so just file your own report & it will get picked up in the mystical world of moderation ... Bill

There was a Novs race here long a go
https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=7107#event1881
this will give you an idea of the lap times - although I'd pretty much ignore those sub 3.30 as those drivers are now in the Pro Division. I really dislike this track & didn't bother to take part in Season 18. Not sure if my pain tolerances have increased since then!

Thanks Fulvio.
Had a few test laps & this seems like it should be fun. Quite easy to learn but beware the sand trap in T1 & the polos on all the tight bends. Not too many passing places - but not something I have to worry about that often.

Looks like the graduation from the Billy Nobrakes school of racing.

THIS POST IS FOR THE LIGHT & HEAVY RACES
The F2 series moves to France for Round 7 and the Le Mans Bugatti circuit, a permanent track used as part of the Le Mans 24 hour race. Fortunately we only have to do 24 laps. It was also the track actually used for the French F1 Grand Prix during the 1967 season.

There was a debate following Silverstone about chassis handicaps. After consideration we will be keeping the handicap system published at the beginning of the season, although the Hockenheim race will be moved from Round 10 to Round 8, so as not to seriously disadvantage the series leader in the last race.

The handicaps for each Division will, therefore be:
LIGHTS Hristo – Ferrari or Brabham BT14. Evil Clive & Goran -  Ferrari, Brabham BT14 or Cooper.
HEAVY Rainier – Ferrari or Brabham BT14. Rog UK & Phil Thornton -  Ferrari, Brabham BT14 or Cooper.

Incidents should be reported in the usual way.

Another thing - this league is getting very competitive. Hendy's qualifying time would have put him P2 in the Works race.

What can be best described as a midfield performance.
Hendy & Rainier were a class apart & Cookie decided to do a whole race.
Picked up a few places on Lap 1 & managed to keep Phil’s Cooper at bay for about 5 laps until he worked out quicker than me that the BRM had pulled left on the straight to leave us room. Had a minor altercation with team mate DC on Lap 6. I think this cause some minor damage somewhere as my lap times dropped back to 1.49’s which should otherwise have been 1.46’s. May have been a blessing in disguise as the rest of the race was rather lonely & but incident free on a rather tricky but otherwise enjoyable track.

We have races coming up at Spa & Tripoli so might have to rest the dependable Brabham for something with a bit more top end speed.

This track really took some learning, quite a few places where choice of gear was worth half a second.
Relatively pleased to start P3 & improved to 2nd when Johnny had a slow start. I remember three trips into the scenery which changed position from 2nd to 7th to 4th to 6th depending on other peoples misfortunes. Should have stayed that way but Paul & Dave C had an altercation on the last lap - gifting me 4th.
Nice track - which we get to run again in the 67's on Sunday.
Classy drive from Rob in the BT7 & for a change Johnny's computer didn't sabotage his race.
Not looking forward to the next race at Clermont!
1545  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 23 (2012) Formula 2 Trophy - Silverstone (GP 1952-73) - Sep 21 on: September 23, 2012, 10:17:06 PM +0100
Thanks for your various comments.
This is the first season we have run F2's so the effect of the handicap system was a bit of an unkown quantity. The idea of the handicap is to even up the competition - but this should be proportionate & the BT14 & Ferrari did look very outclassed at Silverstone.
Let me have a think about whether we can make some minor changes.
Similarly I don't have any objections to changing the running order by swapping Hockenheim to Round 9 & finishing at Jops.
I think GPL has been successful over the years because the league has been run consistently within its rules - but the main attraction is to go racing & have some fun. If the rules are getting in the way then a change would be the right thing to do.
