31  UKGTL / UKGTL Races / Re: UKGTL Ladder - TC-65 @ Hockenheim National - 17th August on: August 14, 2006, 02:07:03 PM +0100
Lapping is what I have become very much used to by now and it is very rare that the situation is problematic. Especially if it is in a situation where you have enough of a lead on the driver behind you there is time to select where to pass and how to pass. If possible I also sometimes do not lap people as soon as I can if the guys are having a battle and I have enough of a lead.
The tricky bit is when there is a car right behind you and you are in a battle for position. Than you need to get past the cars that are being lapped as quickly as possible and it is sometimes very tight or you HAVE to go for a move that is riskyer than you would want it to be.
That is why I alway flash my lights allready from a bit of a distance and than again closer up if I see that the driver has not seen me (usually you can see that when getting closer). Most of the cases work, rarely the lapped guy mistakes me for a car that is batteling him for position but usually than everything works out. Imola and the GT40 was more of a strange case - from my point of view it seemed that the lapping wasnt recognised as there was much line changing going on ->even more so than sometimes when there really is a fight for position. However I was able to get past without big problems as my car was up to the task. If I would have been in an Escort however I wouldnt be able to pass due to the fact that I would be loosing too much ground on the straights and would than be held up in the corners - so couldnt get a run again on the next straight.
We have disscused this subject many times before and that is also why there was a rule adjustement.
I am not a fan of the rolling start - I was  against it, but I have to say that when we get it right it does work very well against the T1 pileups. The problem I see really is that the people dont keep together enough on the out lap and the accelerating braking that is going on. I try every time to keep my ca 80....100km/h, but most of the times I have to really slow down on the middle of the out lap to get the field together again as I allready open a gap on the second placed guy.
Once we got on the rew limmiter everybody should close up even more (each limmiter gets turned on later than the car infront by default). Once you see the car infront move you should immidiatly go for it. IMO the race itself dosent really suffer from the lack of T1 passes. Sure beats a classic mulit car off in the first corner which do happen even with a lot of care - it is extremly easy to brake a tad to late and than carnage happens. Especially in a mixed car field where some cars are far slower off the line even though they are faster on track - happens in the best of leauges (heck - even F1...)

Well a great result for me of course, but I am not really happy about it as I could have taken far more points.
I know that I have the speed here and the only thing that wasnt know to me was the pace of LeH. I started the practise in the BMW knowing that I can do a mid to high  2:01 with it on one lap and 2:02's 2:03 trough the race. But LeH was in the Pantera and I wanted to win this one so I chickened out and took a Capri. In qually it than looked like the right choice as I just about made pole position (although I lost 0.5 sec in the last section on my fastest lap). But than in the race I quickly started to build a lead and soon I had nothing in my mirrors anymore so I started to do some quick laps. Than a bit over the midd point I started to overtake the first backmarkers and the pace droped a bit. It than droped even more when my brother came into my room and started talking to me. That made me less concentrated as I had to let down the volume to be able to hear him and the laptimes droped some more. In the end I basicly more or less cruised to the finnish.
I think that I might have been able to win this in the Beemer as well, will try it out next time when we get to a good racetrack.

Not really.
Jag is faster than the Ferrari by about .6~1 sec here and the GT350 is about 2 sec slower per lap than the Jag. On this track that is a big margin.
There are more cases of false clasification - especially the GTC76 class Corvette has a way to high rating - it is acctually quite a bit slower than the 911's.
And in the TC65 the Alfa and Falcon ratings are all wrong - the Alfa will almost always outpace the Falcon - deffinitly in the longer races (tires...)

Now this is exactly up my strassa ->good choice Cool

All in all a good race, but the track IMO is not suited for racing a big field. Lapping was really difficult and there were many close situations. I got a bit frustrated as well as I was trying to get some lead over rik, was acctually able to almost loose him out of the mirrors, but than came up on a group of cars to lap and lost that gap. I felt quite bad because the group of cars were having a great battle and I had to disrupt them not to be overtaken myself - still rik was behind me than and I had to push hard again to get some gap - I than cocked it up into T1 - braked a bit late and went into the gravel and the barrier which cost me the lead. Luckily I was able to finnish the race in second than as the handling was not up to par anymore. On top of that I hate the Jag and was tempted to go for the Ferrari, but it was sadly just too slow to have a chance at the podium.
Still congrats to rik -> excelent drive
Also well done to LeH that was keeping close as well -> luckily the race ended otherwise I would be in trouble.

That had to be a missunderstanding Shark - I was leading by enough to let you have your battle with Mooman without disturbing and that is why I wanted to stay behind you in the parabolica. I didnt quite understand why you went so wide till I saw your post - kinda feel a bit guilty about that.
Otherwise I had a good race - pace was good and not too tough on the tires - still enough of rubber left at the end to do reasonably good times if necesary. LeH was keeping me honest though in the first half of the race and I had to keep it together, which is not easy at all with the crazy chicane. In the second part of the race I almost went into the tirewall in the chicane and I went wide a few times into T1, but I was able to keep it on the road.
37  UKGTL / UKGTL Races / Re: UKGTL Ladder - GTC-TC-76 @ Dijon Prenois GP - 20 July 2006 on: July 20, 2006, 10:11:44 PM +0100
Another Escort engine blower here.
I kinda forgot that it will do that with normal damage as well. Really wanted to drive it so didnt even consider taking the BMW. I did however test both and acctually found that the Alpina was slightly faster - was very suprised when I got a 1:28.8 on my first lap with it and than got a 1:28.0 after a few laps. Still opted for the Escort as it feels much more alive and dosent give you that strangled feel to the engine.

Anyhow - did a decent time in qually and was able to keep in the very low 28's during qually. Was doing well in the race leading infront a fast Baracus. We werent much appart and after the first backmarkers I started to get away just a slight bit. However I than noticed that I didnt have the right responce on the upshift anymore and I knew I was in trouble. I looked back and sure enough there was slight smoke behind me. I than started nursing the engine, didnt rew it so high anymore and tried to shift really carefully. Soon Baracus passed me and it wasnt long till my engine siezed up completly(even had to switch to neutral to roll off the track).
Oh well - next time I will know better  Tongue

Good race
Had a nice battle with LeH - I had no realistic chance to keep in first position though as the GT40 is better on the brakes and cornenring. After getting passed I tried to repass straight away on the exit, but the run to the chicane wasnt long enough to be able to pull it off.
I than tried to keep close and was managing to stay close for many laps, but I than got dissapering cars for a moment and slightly touched LeH - sorry for that - your car suddenly was closer than before and I couldnt do anything. After this mistake I was a bit further behind and the gap started to rise slightly after that. There was also lots of traffic and I tried to not disturb the battles too much - and I almost lost it into the chicane (I had to be very careful because I allready had two cuts warnings by than)
I still am very happy with the result - pole and best race lap with final second position.
In qually I flashed my lights at Gymer - I am sorry for that - it was basicly a reflex from the races (allready concentrating heavily by that point). I realised I cocked up and therefore stopped and let you continue with your lap.

Bloddy fantastic  Angry - I acctually do some practise for the race and am really looking forward to it and than when I turn on my comp my graphics card dies on me. Really pissed about that -  it was a relativly fresh card too - only about four months that I have it (maybe even less). Gonna send it to the shop tommorow  Angry   - hope you guys have a good race.
43  UKGTL / UKGTL Races / Re: UKGTL Ladder - 29 June 2006 on: June 27, 2006, 11:00:04 AM +0100
Interesting - the Escort has the best rating
Gotta try it out - perhaps, just perhaps there is a big fault there mates (along with the Corvette being far worse off than the 911's).
The Schnitzer CSL also looks tempting
44  UKGTL / UKGTL Races / Re: UKGTL Stop Gap Race - 8th June on: June 09, 2006, 10:51:52 AM +0100
As you guys suspected I had big lag on the first lap and coming onto the home straight I got huge lag and all of a sudden Zacari was slightly in front of me. I wasnt sure what was going on so I passed and proceded driving at ~15mph maybe less. All I saw was that Zacari was more back than usual at the start - I do belive that he could have easily been more close  for starting.
As for this way of starting - it could work I think. I tried to do the same in Imola - I slowed right down at the start to get the people to drive more close together.
But there is a problem with this - once you slow down you have to maintain that speed till the start otherwise the gaps will rise as the speed grows (driver reactions  - the driver reacts on the drive in front and going down the field that reaction time is added together so the last guy acceleartes many seconds after the front guy accelerated). Doing the start at 10 mph is basicly very little different to a standing start - even more, on the standing start there are no big gaps.
What we could do is to do a rolling start start with normal speeds, than slow in the middle of the lap to around 20...30 mph so that the gaps close up and than slowly slowly get up to 40~50mph. After the slower phase each driver has to keep close to the driver in front and is not allowed to brake accelerate or swerve. The driver is only responsible to keep within 5~20 meters to the car in front. The leader has to keep a constant speed than and is responcible to keep the speeds so that every corner can be taken at that constant speed to the startline. (I done many outlaps in the lead by now so I kinda got the feeling of what the leader should do  Grin)

Race was good, but tires didnt last long as I made some stupid mistakes (concentration droped when I got some lead on Zacari) and I than pushed more to get some lead back. The rear tires were going at around lap 10 and when Jeff came behind me and applyed pressure I was in big trouble. When I got passed I tried and follow him and almost managed to get close to him again, but than I lost the brakes as well and almost took both of us out. Luckily Jeff saw it coming and made room. Of course I than let him pass me back. After that error I was driving like on ice - fronts still ok-ish, but the rears were badly burned. Last two laps I was constantly sideways.

In qualy I took a big gamble with the Vette - I didnt drive it at all before last night and the laps in practise were my running in laps. Luckily I was able to get it do do what I wanted it to do and got a very very good qualy time.
45  UKGTL / UKGTL Races / Re: UKGTL Stop Gap Race - 8th June on: June 07, 2006, 03:13:46 PM +0100
Very glad I havent missed this one (as I did some before)
Interesting choice of cars - should be close.
The track is not so good however - I dislike Nurburgring and also the FPS drop a lot on the stadium section.
Seems like I have to follow the example set by Jeff and do some laps. Hopefully I can get within a second of those laptimes - I dont drive much lately so it could very well be that I will be having a hard time getting up to speed.
