1  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 44 (Spring 2024) 1967 F1 (Works) - Interlagos 71 - Jan 14 on: January 15, 2024, 09:25:13 PM +0000
Firstly, sorry to Renato for spinning in front of him at the end of lap 2, then for the contact when rejoining, I didn't realize until I watched the replay, I thought you were collected by a passing car.  From there it was a recovery drive for the both of us, more so for Renato.  I made reasonable progress through the field, lucky that soo many were in BRMs!  Towards the end I was up with Doni and Fulvio.  Having passed Doni I had a few sketchy moments, impeding Doni a bit, before a spin, sorry to scare you Doni, it was close but you just managed to avoid me.  A couple of corners later I managed to go the long way round at Curva do Sol and emerge in-front.  Due to my antics, Fulvio had pulled a decent gap and despite the FL on the last lap, he managed to hold me off for 2nd, well driven Fulvio, I saw you also set your FL on the last lap, keen to hold onto 2nd!  I have to be happy with 3rd, didn't expect much what with the track being so tricky and my erratic style which I need to tame.

Cheers for the orga, see you in Porto where I hope to do better than my last outing when I got caught behind a crash and GPL timed me out after only one corner!

Bob.

P.S Dulima, you can call me Bob Wink

A better race than my result suggested!  With about 3 laps to go I was in 3rd with a healthy gap on Dulima but then I lost it at T1 after having somehow built up to it over several laps, my issues there getting worse over the previous  4 or 5 laps!  The resulting spin was a long one which took a while to recover from, which let Dulima by.  I stupidly then tried to chase him down which caused another off the next lap bringing me into Doni's clutches.  Braking a bit too deep at new world I ran slightly wide and Doni clattered me, spinning me round.  I had to sit there whilst the cars behind Doni went by, dropping me to 7th (@Phil, perhaps you should have tried the same move, very effective!).  For good measure I lost it at the final corner, ripped a wheel off and stopped metres from the line!  Somehow a fitting end to a mediocre season!

Cheers for the Orga and have a good Christmas everyone.
3  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 43 (Autumn 2023) 1967 F1 (Works) - Bottomless Lakes - Nov 12 on: November 14, 2023, 09:19:51 PM +0000
A rare good result was a massive surprise at this round.  I tried the brab for a few laps on Friday then decided to splurge on the Ferrari for the race.  Qualifying made me wonder about my choice as I could hardly complete a lap, so I started way down, directly behind team mate Arf also in a Ferrari, having only tried one setup.

Arf was slow away but no bother I stayed behind him and hoped those behind me wouldn't get too excited. I took it easy down to the lake part expecting to encounter carnage but fortunately there was just one car in the sand and no one to avoid.

After a few mishaps in the early part of the race I was able to settle in, getting faster with almost each lap which enabled me to catch a few cars. This continued pretty much until the end.  As Phil mentioned I passed him with a lap to go then almost gave him the place back with an off on the last lap, but luckily had enough margin to rejoin in position. As I approached the line I saw an ailing Eagle, tough luck Leo, what happened?

Fastest race lap was 6 secs faster than my qual time,  good to see I finally got the hang of it! Also pleased to support Greg with our team effort, Baarf are now top o the table!

Cheers for organizing, see you down under

P. S Sorry for giving you a nudge at the lake section, Syd, hope you didn't have damage
4  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 43 (Autumn 2023) 1967 F1 (Works) - Kyalami - Oct 1 on: October 03, 2023, 09:12:51 PM +0100
Fairly happy with my race: 1) Saw the flag; 2) Podium; 3) PB (I think, at some stage I submitted my times to GPLRank and some got worse!); 4) Relatively few incidents.  Of course, shelling out for the Lotus was a big factor, eso when few others followed suit, but this was my strategy.

P3 on the grid was realistically all I could aim for, my best splits were below Tris' time but with Greg was 0.4 behind I opted to do a full fuel run rather than try to improve.  I started slightly cautiously and wondered whether I'd be challenged into T1 but those around me all kept calm and we made it through.  Greg was hot on my heels, faster in many places...crucially not the straight tho, Brab simply unable to live with the Cosseh grunt.  After watching the replay I was surprised how much the Lotus pulled away, but my driving wasn't as good and Greg would soon regain the lost ground.  After about 6 laps I had a half spin at Clubhouse, letting Greg, Dulima and Cookie all through.  I kept calm though and was able to catch back up to Cookie and pass him on the straight.  Almost straight away I then lost it in the Esses and clouted the barrier, luckily I was able to continue without apparent damage.  Cookie was back past though so I had to chase him down again and repeat my overtake into Crowthorne.  A few laps later I managed to catch Dulima, also in a Lotus, so I was wondering how I'd get by.  The answer came shortly later, possibly aided by a backmarker, Dulima a fair bit slower through Jukskel allowing me to pull alongside and go the long way round Sunset.  Somehow I got by and managed to gradually pull away.

My pit board showed Greg now ahead of me by 6 secs, but knowing his strong pace I'm sure he had plenty in his pocket.  I continued to drive a reasonable pace but knew I wouldn't catch him unless he had issues.

I'm quite a fan of Kyalami and enjoyed the race.  Unfortunately I'll be on the ferry back to Blighty for the next race, so see you all in Mexico!

Cheers for the Orga,

Bob
5  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 43 (Autumn 2023) 1967 F1 (Works) - Ain-Diab - Sep 17 on: September 18, 2023, 08:52:09 PM +0100
I wonder why some of them are not more sensible when it comes to the initial laps? A pity, all the training and the race ruined. Angry

Sorry for taking you out Claudio and causing the carnage on L3 was it?  It can happen but indeed you should expect more of a Works driver.  My race was full of incidents and at one point I realized my wheel was loose (think that was whilst I slide across the plains seemingly forever).  Nevertheless I had plenty of other issues once the wheel was secured.

I was going to take the Eagle but at the last minute opted for the BRM because I wasn't getting on very well with the circuit (also had low frame rates in several places, anyone else suffer with that?) it's obviously not that fast but I found a reasonable setup and it seemed to handle pretty nice.  Pace was alright, consistency wasn't.  I was slow off the line and let a couple cars pass unchallenged as I cautiously approached T1.  Pleased (if amazed) we all made it round.  With all the incidents I thought I was fighting over last spot but from the results I see there were a few other runners behind me.

Cheeers for the orga & see you next time,

Bob

Just done a few laps, narrow!
7  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 43 (Autumn 2023) 1967 F1 (Works) - Monza67 - Sep 3 on: September 04, 2023, 09:26:45 PM +0100
Think I chose the wrong car for this race, I tried the Honda but couldn't do with it's handling, kept spinning it when getting it the slightest bit sideways....perhaps it's the way I drive so opted for the sweeter handling of the Cooper, which was great in the corners o'course but dire everywhere else.

Andreas clattered me a treat at the start as I braked and tried to avoid Arf and seemed to fly over the top of me (at least that's how I recall it) (guess you didn't brake Andreas?) so I was dead last leaving the grid Wink.  Anyways not to worry, car seemed fine and coming gingerly into lesmo there was carnage which I luckily managed to tiptoe around and found myself right behind Arf.  I stayed there a lap or two but lost the tow after a couple of small mistakes as Arf set about Andreas and Greg.  From there I had a spin or two and ended my race on L10 minus a wheel, probably pushing too hard to be honest.

Cheers and see you next time,

Bob
8  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 43 (Autumn 2023) - Targa Florio - Aug 20 on: August 23, 2023, 09:34:08 PM +0100
Very disappointed with my 41'03
I was doing 39'30 during tests, the morning before.

But there were some explanations :
- then half of the race with Baab, quicker than me but with 3 or 4 times off the road and each time restarting behind me so I hd to slow to let him pass again and again.

Thanks for letting me back past David, I'm not sure how many times it was, could have been three, but I left the race fairly early on, not even completing the first segment, didn't make a tight left onto a bridge and when attempting to drive through the abyss GPL CTD'd.

I was questioning the choice of track before the race and still haven't driven it all, but kudos to the track builders, it looks great and as Pete n Phil mentioned, must have been a lot of hard graft.

Cheers,

Bob

Short race for me, a tangle with Fulvio in T1 bent my car to the extent that I had to steer hard to keep it straight.  Stayed in it for a couple of laps...not sure why, then binned it at Abbey a few laps later.  Only consolation is that I took a cheap car!

Cheers,

Bob

Bob crashed at Metzgesfeld (I saw the crash and luckily I was far enough back to slow down and avoid the wreckage)

Yeah on L2 wobbled onto the grass and ripped two wheelz off on a surprisingly sturdy sign! I took the BRM to manage my spend, used the defaullt setup, which had max rear wing (surprised to hear you ran no wing Phil), but it didn't feel happy, should have spent longer experimenting!

Thanks orga team,

Bob
