31  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 40 (Spring 2022) 1967 F1 (Works) - Norisring - Feb 20 on: February 21, 2022, 10:05:17 PM +0000
Well, turned out to be a lot more fun than expected.  Re my earlier post, this was a new track for me and my first impression wasn't great, so I decided to take the BRM.  I adapted one of Hristo's Solitude setups since it's anti clock, then changed almost everything during qual (tyre pressure, toe-in, camber, diff, gearing!).  The resultant setup seemed reasonable and I was happy with 8th on the grid.

So, T1... having jumped past Leo at the start I was expecting carnage at T1 and wasn't disappointed  Tongue Shocked the question was, where to go, since I was on a wide line I stayed so and managed to avoid the wreckage until Leo walloped my gearbox thrusting me into the air and crashing back down hard.  Amazingly I could continue once I found 1st and my car seemed undamaged, least, as far as I could tell  Grin  I then followed Leo and Carsten, both in BRMs but soon had Donald breathing down my neck.  He didn't stay there long though and was soon past the gaggle and cleared off, great driving.  After many laps I managed to chase Leo down, however, I now had Enrique on my tail, showing me his nose and almost getting it chopped off (after watching the rpy I'm amazed we didn't collide).  I almost let you past Enrique, you were a lot faster and seemed to be playing!  I suppose my random lines into T1 were hard to judge.  I too had to be careful since I gained loads on Leo into T1 and mounted the kerbs on several occasions in avoidance.  Shortly after I snatched 2nd too aggressively outta T1 and lost it.

In the end after running 5th for most of the race, then briefly 4th, I ended-up 6th, slightly gutting but if offered that before the race I'd have taken it.

Cheers for the racing and organizing,

Bob

Did my first laps around this place and oooh.... I hope it grows on me.  Maybe one to get a slower car ticked off!

Grats to Baab for the win and to the podium guys.

Cheers Clive!  Well, seems like I was really lucky last night, far enough up the grid that I avoided all the stranded cars, Alien Jonny blowing it off the line, there was no chance of running with him, then I managed to survive a couple of offs too.

I did a bit of praccy for this one and was encouraged by my pace in the Ferrari, being able to match the UKGPL records, so thought it was worth taking a faster car...until I saw Jonny's pace in the Lotus!  I lead away from the start with Greg right on my case, where he would stay until I crashed at the esses at about mid distance.  The crash left me in Greg's path, I wasn't sure where to go and unfortunately he couldn't avoid me and we both went off, but luckily we could also  continue.  I didn't have any noticeable damage and set off after Greg with Leo (I think) now right on my tail.  Greg was flying now clearly trying to pull a gap but after a lap or two he also got it wrong in the esses and went off.  After another couple of laps Leo must have had a moment and I suddenly had 6 secs which I could then manage to the end.

So a lucky and rare win, the stars aligned n that!  Pleased to get some points on the board.  There were also some sterling drives further down the order by those in slower machinery, great effort guys.

Cheers for organizing

Bob.

Nice race Johnny, you kept me on my toes all the race, but you are a trusty and very experienced driver that doesn't make silly moves so it was fun.
At start there were a couple of brave pass while I had to back off behind Jungle, but they didn't last long ahead.
Later Bob crashed at Bosh and luckily, very luckily some of us missed his car out of control for a hair.  Shocked
Grats podium and Brm guy.

Yeah a dismal end to the race for me, sorry to scare you Fulvio, glad you managed to avoid my wreck.

I recall having a good race here in the Cooper a few seasons back and a decent set-up so had reasonable hopes, but I think the field is much stronger now.  I managed a pb in practice and hoped to dip into the 44s but wasn't quite able to do so in qualifying, putting me 8th on the grid!  I made a steady start and a ferrari bolted past into T1 which together with another ferrari, I then followed for the early laps until both of them had moments and went off leaving me a long way back from Lasse doing an amazing job in his BRM.  When coming-up to lap Roberto I somehow cut the exit on the inside of the second corner trying to line-up a pass and had a slow half spin which allowed Fulvio to catch right-up.  A lap or two later I binned it at Bosch having gone in a bit too hot and trying to kill the understeer.  Gutted!  Having missed the first race due a dead router I'm yet to get off the mark.

Cheers and see you at Riverside,

Bob

Oh man, you're wondering about tyre pressures....I've done about 4 laps ( & a million shift+rs!), car choice for me seems irrelevant! Tomorrow's gonna be a blast  Wink

Hmm...sorry for the crashes guys, Tris into the 1st hairpin then Dave and someone else (maybe Billy) who was a team mate  oops  No excuses, on two of these occasions I was in trouble on the brakes, the other I misjudged the person in-front's pace through the final corner.

Apart from that I had a couple of other offs, a shift R & stop n go then was in no man's land for the rest!!  Cheers for the racin anyways.

I seem to have missed the first round, can I join one of the teams (don't mind which)?

40  UKGPL / UKGPL Races / Re: UKGPL Season 39 - SCX - open Fun Race - Le Mans - Dec 26 on: December 27, 2021, 10:19:57 PM +0000
Had some fun last night....once i'd installed the right mod (thought SC was just an alias for he GTs and scratched my head for a while wondering why I couldn't join!!!  Once I sorted that I went on the hunt for a setup for the MK IV but didn't find owt so just modified the default, which seemed pretty nice.

Sry for my part in the rolling start crash.  I think I've one ever done one before and have now crashed during both attempts!  I started directly behind JPettet who was going so slowly that everyone else was clearing off (I saw your explanation JPettet, but am none the wiser, guess you couldn't see?).  The slow pace lead to me being alongside, which I shouldn't have been, then I couldn't avoid him as he swung out to the left.  After the crash I had to reset and started last, then passed JPettet who was stationary and set-off after everyone else.  I was in no mans land for a lap or two then came across the two Ferraris piloted by Donald and Andreas as they got going again after an incident.  Doni dropped off but I had a fun battle with Andreas, which I finally lost when going off and hitting a tree.  Interesting fight, the GT40 much faster on the Mulsanne but a handful elsewhere compared to the Ferrari.

Cheers and wishing you all a happy new year (get well soon Fulvio)

Happy with yesterday's result, considering the other starters my target was P5 so I'll take P3 all day long  Grin.  Something happened to Jonny whilst he was right on my tail after his earlier off, he was much faster than me and caught me quickly after passing others.  After Jonny retired I continued my pursuit of Leo who had pulled a gap, I was braking a bit later since I thought I was being a bit too cautious.  This was generally okay but I did have a spin and a run through the gravel at the chicane...which put paid to any hopes of second (no hope of an "accident" to trigger a safety car in GPL!).  Actually liked the circuit more than I remembered from previous outings!

Congrats to champion Uli, I echo Jonny's comments regarding your drive in Road America, very impressive, would've liked to have given you a run for your money but I wasn't up to it!  Given your BL in this race it seems like you've already got to grips with the G27, I also use one, might try the stick shift next season...perhaps some of my team mates will also make an appearance!

Cheers for running the series Phil n Dave, it was great.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all,

Bob.

Reasonably pleased with my race last night, a few mistakes but thankfully less than normal  Wink.  I was quicker than I expected to be, in practice I was in the 16s then once I managed to string a lap together I was amazed to clock a lap in the 14s in qualifying, although in a Lotus I guess it is possible.  Cracking lap in the Brab Uli, I'd be interested in that set-up  Tongue, although the skills would still be wanting.  I had big ideas of doing a ton of praccy and really sorting my lines, which didn't really materialize due real life demands!

Great drive by Leo too, despite his easy start he was clearly faster than me and closed relentlessly until I out-braked myself down the hill to the 3rd? turn, giving him an easy pass, he then pulled away effortlessly though!  During the closing laps I was monitoring the gap to Jonny, tough luck with your own off, pleased you didn't catch me!

Thanks for the racing, see you in Le Mans, one of my least favourite circuits!

Then my world turned upside down.

Sorry Clive, couldn't avoid you and ended up giving you the 'good news' which flipped you over, seemed somewhat disproportionate.

In the early stages my race wasn't too bad but after about 8 laps I have a few offs, not sure if this damaged the car but as the race wore on I had more and more crashes/spins, seemingly unable to keep it on the track.  Tonight the BRM definitely earn't it's title as the Tank, each time I smashed the boundary I thought I was done for but no, the car held together!  Suppose I was trying too hard after being excited to find a setup that I liked and managing to qualify mid-grid.  In the end I benefited from the misfortunes of others to be able to finish P6.

Cheers,

Bob.

Eventful race for me for all the wrong reasons, I counted 10 incidents after watching the replay including failing to avoid a spinning Clive and barging past Doni into T1, sorry Doni, shoulda waited another lap.

I had reasonable pace but had to watch the front temps and try to steer more with the rear, which contributed to some of my later spins/offs, but mainly it was driver error, during one off I simply didn't steer enough and had time to question what the hell I was doing as I headed for the sticky grass.  Anyway, silver lining was that I managed to take about half a sec of my Cooper pb and in so doing claim bragging rights over team mate Arf  Grin

Cheers Guys, see ya next time
