1  SimRacing In General / Grand Prix Legends / Re: rFactor2 = GPL2? on: January 24, 2012, 11:15:31 PM +0000
I have to say that it looks and sounds just great Mike.

I guess I  might have to give this a try, just to see how it "feels".

My only reservation is that when I have used rFactor before ( for GT races etc  even 2CV racing!!) I find the setup and mod changing interface non user friendly for me. But maybe it is worth the struggle...?
The mod interface is one thing they are working on a lot.

It feels so much different to rF1, they are really direct but don't have huge grip.  Even so, you can't slide them too much or the tyres will overheat and you can feel it when you've got the tyres too hot.  Most importantly the grip stays at low speeds which is where the majority of sims fail, even rF1 didn't do low speed grip well.

rF2 also has the track affected by rubber build-up, so it will gain grip on the racing line as cars run on it, and have less grip off-line where it is dirty.  The more cars that run, the faster it rubbers in.

Early stages of the open beta yet, but the potential of rF2 is massive.  If you do decide to give it a go, don't judge the 60's cars by the default setups, cos they are awfull.  I'll pop a couple of my setups on here for anyone trying it.

For the last few days I was trying to get this sim to work on my PC. Finally I've succeeded Wink

These "historic" cars are awesome. They maybe aren't licenced and they don't look like Lotus, Brabham or any other specific car from that era, but when I finally was able to take them on a track it wasn't important for me anymore.

These cars simply feels awesome! Now I just need to learn how to drive these things lol

At least one of the historic cars will be licenced officially, and looking at the models, I suspect it will be Lotus.  I absolutely love these cars, once the dreadful default setup has been fettled, they take me back to GPL as you need precision, patience and good throttle control to drive them.  A lapse of concentration is usually fatal, just like GPL   Grin

Here's 2 laps of an online race I had with the F2's.  My graphics settings are rather low due to my 8800GT getting on a bit and the betas graphics engine clearly needs some optimising yet.  Enjoy!

 Grin

Since I sacked iRacing, I still wanted to race with you guys and I had the game anyway.

That was brilliant!  Even if the AI cars make life a bit... interesting, and I do like Zandvoort anyway Smiley

I'm tempted to give this a go tonight Smiley
5  SimRacing In General / iRacing / Re: New build on: November 07, 2011, 11:48:48 PM +0000
So basically, they've turned the mx5 (one of my favourite cars) into the Skippy (one of my least favourite cars).
This is what I don't understand about iRacing & part of my frustration. It's supposed to be the most realistic racing SIM about, they then go & change a car from chalk to cheese. Is it still the most realistic Huh
No, it isn't IMHO Sad

I clicked the Cancel button tonight.  I couldn't even be bothered to try the new build, so I knew the time had come.

They are easy to drive... Until you get to the limits.  Driving the F-Classic on the absolute limit will be like walking a tightrope, but that's true of any car.

I don't know why people always think any racing car must be really hard to drive.   Huh  I did the Silverstone single-seater experience and those were a doddle to drive around, but then I was lapping 10sec off the record  Cheesy  I imagine they would need a lot more attention from you when you get to within 2sec.

Even people who have been lucky enough to drive an F1 car (who aren't race drivers) comment that they found it surprisingly easy to drive.  Again, they are a long way short of the cars limits.

It's very good indeed.  Go try the demo.

The 88 F1 is fabulous.
8  SimRacing In General / iRacing / Re: Oulton Park on: October 27, 2011, 01:44:40 PM +0100
Looks good  Cool

Hoping that Oulton can help me re-kindle my interest which has been sadly lacking recently.  Huh
Me too Brendan, I have become completely disinterested with iRacing and I'm still not sure if I am going to renew my subs next month.

I will have to try some races again to see what happens.

Entering the boot I found Mike's LMP parked on his roof sideway on the track while I had a LMP ready to lap me. I tried to go left without cut the track to the lapper, but got the parked car with my RF wheel and my car dived for the rail. Limped to the pit and had to wait for a 9 minutes repair  :'(
Ehm MIke, Esc didn't work?  Roll Eyes
I was frantically trying to reset, but it wasn't working!  Finally went for ESC which did work.  I'm very sorry that it caused problems Sad

Two races, two retirements Sad

The car felt better than at Suzuka, but I must be getting something wrong here to be that far off the pace.  It looked like drivers were trying all three downforce setups, which didn't always end well.

Qualifying was pretty hopeless, but the race started even worse, with a huge clump of cars going round together.  Then came Simons incident.  I was already defending from another car and went to brake late, locked the left front and found a very slow Simon right in front of me Sad

Dug the car out of the gravel, but it had lost loads of speed, so it was a pitstop for repairs.  The fuel run went OK and pace seemed pretty good, then after my second stop I had a brainfade, bounced a kerb and wrecked the car on the barriers.  Reset and it seems to want to let me continue, but I had run out of motivation Sad

I like the car a lot more, but you can't relax for a moment with it, unless it's something in my setup.
12  UKiR / UKiR Races / Re: i7e Endurance Sundays Pre-Season Race - Suzuka - 31 July on: August 01, 2011, 12:17:37 AM +0100
Equally I had a play with the LMP2 around Watkins Glen starting with the fixed setup and it felt a lot better to drive there.  So the setup wasn't at all right for Suzuka.
13  UKiR / UKiR Races / Re: i7e Endurance Sundays Pre-Season Race - Suzuka - 31 July on: July 31, 2011, 08:32:24 PM +0100
Moved up to 5th by just staying on the track, braked a touch late into T1, spun off and knocked the wall, then spun again at the next turn.  Lost the will to live at that point.  I don't have a lot of confidence in the car, need to improve a lot if I'm going to enjoy this season.

We seem to have an even worse situation than last season with lapping though.  Ford GT's are faster on the straights and (in comparison) hugely slow in the corners.  We thought the Mustangs were slow, these are even slower!
14  SimRacing In General / iRacing / Re: iRacing 2.0 on: July 30, 2011, 12:11:16 AM +0100
I've had a crack at the Ford GT, it's an odd beast, prone to high speed understeer, twitchy and over-sensitive at low speed, but I think I have got a handle on it.  Splits for 2:06 at Suzuka, so it's 20s per lap slower  Shocked

So far I've been working from the Watkins Glen basic setups and left the fuel load alone.
15  SimRacing In General / iRacing / Re: iRacing 2.0 on: July 29, 2011, 11:21:05 PM +0100
I'm liking the LMP2 so far Smiley  Nearly into 1:46's at Suzuka, but you must stay away from the kerbs as it's very easy to spin off them.  Still figuring out a setup and I'll try high downforce instead of medium next to see if that's quicker.
