1  SimRacing In General / Grand Prix Legends / Re: GPL vs. iR on: July 27, 2013, 09:35:50 PM +0100
I think you guys are making too much of the graphics issue. Greger is a part of Team Redline - the channel it's hosted on. Maybe one of its members made the video after Greger supplied the replay files.

I believe that video was made simply to show how far technology has come since GPL came out. That said, I'm assuming that, to make the video, he simply loaded up a GPL replay and captured it. Fair enough - if illustrating the difference 15 years makes. Too bad he didn't also load and capture it again but with updated graphics - to help let people know it's still a sim worth your time. Very likely just an oversight on his part. I doubt he, Greger, has an agenda to dis beloved GPL.

I have driven the iRacing Lotus 49 by the way. It's a beautiful car. It sounds wonderful. As you idle through slow turns the engine sounds like a purring wildcat. It's true too that it's a handful down the back straight. (A gross understatement). There's no relaxing whatsoever as the car skitters this way and that while you accelerate. There's no using full throttle either. You have to lift while cresting the rises - otherwise you'll get so much wheel spin you'll likely be tossed off track onto the grass and, usually, the barrier next to it.

After spending two of my days off trying to come to grips with that car I loaded (undated) GPL and its Lotus, at Mosport, and found it much much easier. I can only do 29s or so but it's easy to keep it on the track.

I hope the iRacing release is a bit broken and needs fixing. If not, it'll be a long while before I feel ready to race it. That's a shame too - since it's so damn beautiful.

Ummm. If we have to pit for anything we're kind of blind coming back on to the track. What's the policy? Anyone passing the pit exit should be prepared to keep right as they turn on to the front straight? Or maybe if the exit light, which I can't say for sure I've noticed whether there is one, is green we can assume no one is coming and just exit at speed?

Doh! I went out with 71 litres! That's enough for nearly double race length. I'll find out tomorrow how much dropping the load to qualifying level gains me in speed. Three or four seconds I hope!

I just did five or six laps here. Love this track! Very well made it is. Top quality.

Will very likely attend - if I can get to 45 or less. Managed 48 and change just now - in the Escort.

I will try to attend. I'm not familiar with this track so I might not have time to get up to back-of-the-pack race speed before race day.

Thanks phspok for the info about the cars you've tested here. Though it'll guarantee I'll be at the back I'll likely choose an Alpha. I like their handling.

Wiltsure, Legzy, Clive,

Thanks for the encouragement guys.

On Topic:

That Austin Healey 3000 MK I was a fright to drive. I know next to nothing about setups so I used the slider system to set it up. With the soft/hard suspension slider all the way to the right it still seems 'floaty,' while steering left ever so slightly, past the start/finish line, and then braking for T1. My best lap, granted without a lot of practice, was 1:27.947? If I'd had more practice time I don't know where I'd have found even just five seconds in that beast.

Off Topic:

I have to say I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by choice here at SRoU. The three sims, outside iRacing, that I'm most interested in - GPL, GTR2, and PnG3 - seem very active here. I am in the iGPFun Spec Racer Ford league at iRacing and quite enjoying it too. At the free tracks we're getting 25 gridded - and about 20 for paid tracks.

GPL? iRacing? GTR2? PnG3? I see Race 07 listed on this site too but there doesn't seem to be much interest in it. Since it followed GTR2 I wonder in what way it's inferior.

GPL surprises me the most. Luca Varani, an Italian, founded our iGPFun league and has for 10 years plus ran a GPL league. When I first met him on iRacing I asked "Why iRacing now?" He said, "GPL is dead." I guess he doesn't know about this site.

I don't know how I'll choose where to spend my practice and racing time. Wherever it is I do want to see large grids. Can GPL handle more than a dozen or so in a race? (I'll check past results to answer that myself). I have it installed and, I think, properly updated but at certain tracks weird things happen. At Spa, for instance, if I put myself last on a grid of 20 I can't see my car, and the track graphics are screwed up, until we're moving and I advance a little down the track. Is that a common problem?

I have a little Bio/GPL history I've posted here.

While looking for an appropriate forum section to I noticed the B.R.E.A.S.T.S. sections. Hmmm. Did someone thing long and, uh, hard about how to come up with a name for something using that abbreviation?

Well the start was fun but I just didn't have the pace to keep up. Not wanting to run alone and, especially, risk messing up everyone else while they lap me, I retired after five(?) laps.

I caught the grass on one lap - in T1 I think - slid sideways across the track. My nose clipped someone as he went by and he went off - then Escaped out of his car with suspension damage. I don't imagine our little contact, or his slide in the grass, did that damage so (I hope) his car was already broken before that.

I'll keep my eye on this series and maybe join Season 9 from the beginning. Then again, there is a quite active GPL community here...

Cheers!

JB

Am I missing something? I can't find the server. Google says it's 19:29 over in England so it should be up.

I found it easily enough eight hours ago.

I have installed TeamSpeak and successfully connected to the server.

Hello everyone,

I just found this great site. It's wonderful to see an active PnG3 group here. I've run in Mike Kolar's long running Sunday series over at Race2Play but work conflicts with it now. Besides that, they're getting less than ten in a race right now. Maybe because of summer.

I'd love to join this race. I've set the connection speed to ISDN and connected to the server without being kicked. I practiced this car/track combo a bit and got to 1:33s. I should be able to get below 90 seconds but man this car seems a bit floaty whilst braking.

I am a clean racer over at iRacing. I've an iRating of 2000 and an Av Inc Per Race of 4.11. Usually people hit me. It's not often I hit them.

So can I join in the fun at this late date in your series? Seeing 20 or so vintage cars on the grid would be sweet!

If I can join must I install TeamSpeak? Are we required to communicate passing info to each other? In the iGPFun Spec Racer Ford league I run in over at iRacing we don't allow chat during qualifying or the race but maybe it's different here.

Cheers guys!
