Judging by laptimes I'm not sure my setup was that great anyway, braking was a bit iffy so I'll take another look at the setup of the rear of the car.

Yes, all a bit odd for me.

I had decided it had to be the Sierra for this, mainly to start getting the drives in it out of the way! I had done low 34s in testing, with the idea that more was to come, but nevertheless knew that I would not have too much advantage if any when I saw the times the Erling was doing.

As he said, initial bit of needed wheelspin for the launch was ok, but then it bogged. I believe I was running longer gears, and that would not have helped for sure. We had a nice little battle for the first 5-6 laps, before I finally made a move that stuck, and then was being very careful with tyres as the wear rate was pretty big as the longer gears I was running needed me to just get a bit of wheelspin exiting the tighter so as not to bog on those as well. I as comfortable though, and was able to gently pull away. By half distance the tyres were beyond their best though, and despite still carrying fuel for another 5 laps at least, I pitted on lap 17 for new boots and a top up.

First problem was I crashed on the way in, had to slam the brakes on to avoid a stop go, and put it in the wall on the left. Then didn't turn off repairs, and also had a moment of 'how much fuel do I need? Oh that'll do....'

Was relieved to have no stop/go, and also to still be in front. Took it quite steady for a couple of laps just to warm the tyres nicely (it works in my head at least), during which time Erling did close the gap a bit. At this point, with 12 laps or so to go, I realised that XD had me 1.1 laps short of fuel to the finish. Oh dear. So, the rest of the race was running high gears wherever I could, and a bit of early lift, all whilst trying to still go as fast as I could as Erling was only 2 seconds or so back at intervals. Ended up being a really tough finish to be honest, as a small error would allow the car to bog and lose time, which I could not afford given the pace Erling was running at.

Ended the race with 0.3 laps of fuel left in the tank, much too close for comfort!

Grats to Erling for great race pace, and Matt for the podium finish.
33  UKGTL / UKGTL Races / Re: UKGTL Season 23 World Touring Car Trophy - Monaco - May 29 on: May 30, 2023, 04:31:26 PM +0100
Yep, it did require some saving for sure. My run in quali was on full tanks, so it was possible to run 45s in the race, which I was comfortably going slower than. My full tank pace from quali was giving me 28.3 laps, running 4-5 seconds a lap slower than that for any length of time would mean the fuel would be sipped....

@Clive, the setup was with a balanced fuel load, yes. As to how to save that amount of fuel, well I started with not revving out anywhere, the Merc goes to 11k revs or something, and I short shifted the whole race. I was also doing a fair amount of rolling into the bends having been on the brakes earlier and softer, downshifting later than if I was pushing on, and not taking full throttle out of the hairpins. All this meant that when I discoed I was showing 20 laps of fuel in XD, so pretty confident I could have saved enough to do the run. Ultimately, keeping corner speed high is a crucial component of fuel saving around places like Monaco I think, and there are many corners here don't forget, as it takes less throttle to then get back up to speed. Stop/start progress will cost fuel. Balancing act on the tires, as you keep pushing them on the way into the bends, but if not stressing them with lots of right foot that does help.

The only question I had was whether I could keep Erling off me, but realistically getting past at Monaco is nigh on impossible, so I believed if I could get track position from the start I should be able to place the car in a manner making it at least very difficult. I could see how hard Erling was trying to generate some kind of opportunity by the little nibbles at the wall, the exit of St.Devote being a favourite for his M3, but my car had enough to create a gap when I needed. The back end of the race would have been very interesting had it been tight on fuel, that is for sure.
34  UKGTL / UKGTL Races / Re: UKGTL Season 23 World Touring Car Trophy - Monaco - May 29 on: May 29, 2023, 11:28:20 PM +0100
Yep, exactly that, the whole race was going to be run at a safe pace to then not have to stop. I also was keeping an eye on the tires, as the Merc did use them quite hard when pushing on the quick laps. I thought you had figured me out, but couldn't really see how you could get past as I think the Merc has a bit more straight-line speed than the M3.
35  UKGTL / UKGTL Races / Re: UKGTL Season 23 World Touring Car Trophy - Monaco - May 29 on: May 29, 2023, 09:03:25 PM +0100
Buggerit....CTD going up the hill from St.Devote, hope my car was out of your way Erling.

Shouldn't grumble, can't remember the last time my pc did anything untoward, but that came from nowhere so is just annoying....Hope you all get to the finish.
36  UKGTL / UKGTL Races / Re: UKGTL Season 22 BRDC Ford Challenge Trophy - Donington Park - May 15 on: May 17, 2023, 04:54:24 PM +0100
My contact on you was to straighten you out Erling and prevent the spin, but evidently got the speed a bit wrong, apologies!

Race 2 was quite the hectic event, action packed all the way really, as it should be with the reverse style grid I guess. Tried to be really conscious of closing speeds etc on the first couple of laps, but could still do nothing about avoiding Geoffers up at McLeans. All good fun though, perhaps slightly biased by me obviously getting on quite well with the car.

Um, combination of being unsighted and just having nowhere to go in terms of avoidance action really as I recall Geoffers. Was all a bit of a muddle and the track was quite blocked with Cossies pointing in a variety of directions.

Do you run Nappe1s program Geoffers? I think that uses .net framework from memory, so could be some kind of mismatch on that?
38  UKGTL / UKGTL Races / Re: UKGTL Season 23 1971 ETCC Div.3 - Paul Ricard - May 8 on: May 09, 2023, 11:57:33 PM +0100
Bought some new pedals last week, and this was the first race with them. Quietly hoping my rather more offs than usual is down to a settling in period, and nothing else.

Was hoping the Capri might be just enough to stay with the Mustangs, but it was a vain hope. Manfred was also blisteringly quick in the Opel, so trying to hang on to the guys at the front was doomed to fail, and it did. Then a couple of errors meant I was behind Erling, but whilst my rear tires were indeed worse for wear, I was massively quicker on parts of the lap, and got totally hoodwinked in the braking zone into that first chicane, prompting a huge dive just to miss him. That essentially was that as there just was not enough time to get back to him and Micha, as he had gone through also.

Good fun as always, so mustn't grumble  thumbup2

Frustrated at my efforts elsewhere on track last night I did do a few laps in the Holden, best was a 1.28.9....I have done a version of this track before I think.
41  UKGTL / UKGTL Races / Re: UKGTL Season 22 BRDC Ford Challenge Trophy - Snetterton - Apr 24 on: April 26, 2023, 05:50:58 PM +0100
Nice to use this version of Snetterton, not been on this layout for eons!

Had been slowly upping my pace before quali, and to be honest high 1.10s felt quite good. Then Geoffers did a 1.09, forcing a rethink on the gearing, giving more punch out of the slow stuff and generating laptime, all good I thought.
Then quali comes around, Erling casually sticks a 1.09.0 in, blowing us all out of the water, and for quite some time I couldn't see how to get close to that. More setup tinkering, especially the gearing, as well as realising I needed to lower the rotation of my wheel to match the 23 degrees that was the highest that can be set on this car in game, and that did the trick. Still a bit last minute.com, and I had to put all I had at that moment to get that lap.
Luckily I got the start I needed, and was flat out straight off the bat, with the idea that I might break the tow and therefore have a gap quickly. Seemed to work, although Erling then upped his pace and kept the increase in the gap to small amounts for some time. Was able then to see where more time could be found, and went better towards the end of the race.

No quali as per the rules, but then I realised at the end of the session that I had made a boo-boo and not saved the setup from race 1. Scrabbled through the gearbox, hoping it would be close enough.

Got away ok, got past Tony when he went for the big dive back into turn 2 and I turned under him, which left just Geoffers and Clive. Sat behind Geoff, but was struggling to find enough punch off the slow stuff to make an impression on them. The gearing wasn't right in all honesty, but eventually I went around Geoff as he was boxed in by Clive, leaving Geoffers and Erling to squabble for a minute, which they then did it seems!
Followed Clive, but where he was getting it wrong, I was slow, and the fast parts were more one line. As Erling noted, I was slow on the way into the chicane, trying to be fast out. Eventually at the third attempt it worked, and I sneaked through. Good drive that though Clive, very competitive.

Glad to hear the setup has helped Erling. Genuinely happy to share any of mine in these series, just let me know.
42  UKGTL / UKGTL Races / Re: UKGTL Season 23 1966 BSCC - Brands Hatch - Apr 10 on: April 13, 2023, 10:33:52 PM +0100
Thank you all for the kind words. That all went better than I had hoped in all honesty.

I was a little concerned going into this that the Falcon might be a trump card for Erling, sometimes that car just finds pace that the 2 4-pot cars of Alfa and Lotus-Ford just can't quite cope with. I have fruitlessly chased a Falcon around Brands before, although whether that was this version I can't recall. And then Geoff had 2 drives in the Alfa vs my 1, so felt a bit on the back foot as the Alfa is normally just a touch quicker than the Tina.

Found some rhythm in the Alfa in quali to take pole, but I knew Geoff could go better. Thus was totally not surprised when he held on none too far back in the race for the most part of it, before I eventually did pull a bit of a gap to then be comfortable. Pushed hard to get a fastest lap for the extra point, thinking I may need every one. Having watched Dimitars video, the fun was for 3rd, those guys had a great 3 way battle, if you have not watched it yet then go and do so...

Race 2 for the Cortina, and now with DD and then Hristo both in the same, Geoff still with the Alfa. Imagined for a short time that this might be ok, but then DD did a properly good lap in quali that got me flustered, his 1.51.5 being faster than my lap last time we were here. Last lap attempt got me past him for pole thankfully, and then a good start got me away and clear by the end of lap 1. Couldn't quite match the laptime I did in the Alfa, but was good enough to bring home the first place again.

Another cracking BSCC series Tony, fantastic fun, thank you very much for the efforts on this.
43  UKGTL / UKGTL Races / Re: UKGTL Season 23 World Touring Car Trophy - Albert Park - Apr 3 on: April 05, 2023, 04:59:17 PM +0100
For my part, I'd much rather take the non obvious option to try to find a more entertaining race. Perhaps I got the car choice wrong and the Holden would have been more balanced, but I also figured that might be better used at somewhere like Monza where most will take the Sierra at a guess....

I love the long races, gives a chance to get into a good flow, and strategy can be brought in to give a surprise from time to time. I'm looking forward to the tracks I don't know on this list, that is quite a rarity after a good number of years racing online.

Apologies, I do seem to be in a bit of form at the mo, which is entirely Geoffers fault. After some gentle persuasion I've jumped in to a couple of series with him in RRE which has meant I have had to do some decent tracktime in practise, mainly due to being up against some guys running a very strong pace, and I think I have done OK because of that in those series. That of course pays off in our races as well it would seem. I'll have a bad one again very shortly I am sure, it never all goes right, that's the way of things.
44  UKGTL / UKGTL Races / Re: UKGTL Season 23 World Touring Car Trophy - Albert Park - Apr 3 on: April 04, 2023, 04:53:32 PM +0100
According to that Wiki it was either 2.0, 2.5 or 3.0 litre inline 6s Geoff, although as far as I am aware for the UK market I only recall the 3.0 litre in normally aspirated and single turbo form. Used to see them all the time, rare now. Nice car, but the Celica was nicer  Grin

Always liked Albert Park, and done many races here, so was all very familiar for me. Some of the other circuits I don't know at all given I stopped watching F1 some time back to avoid the Merc/Louise Hamilton domination...
45  UKGTL / UKGTL Races / Re: UKGTL Season 23 World Touring Car Trophy - Albert Park - Apr 3 on: April 04, 2023, 01:36:59 PM +0100
Struggling to find what car to use where to be honest, so given previous experience over many years at Albert Park I took the Supra, thinking it would be a middle ground on power/weight/handling.....Did a few laps offline, and was confident of running in the 2.07s for quali, 2.08s for the race, and for a while it looked like that would be at the sharp end, right up until Geoffers released the full beans of the Merc! 2.06s were not part of the plan, but I had to respond, so took the fuel out of the car and gave it a go Grin

Got a bit caught out in the lag of the turbo off the line. Bit confused by the sounds of this car, this Supra in the UK was an straight 6, with or without turbo from memory, but the car in game sounds like a 4 pot. Did they use a different motor elsewhere in the world? My Celica GT4 ran the 3SGTE motor so was wondering if that had been installed by mistake! Anyway, it spooled and went just in time to hold Erling off, and it was a case of managing the position so that he could not get me on the brakes anywhere for the first few corners, then trying to ease away. I was very conscious of the tires, front left in particular, and even more so when Geoff then closed down quickly on me once he had got to second, forcing me to up my pace. To be fair, they held up ok, and we did many laps before his pitting began at a good pace without performance falling off really. I had seen some run wides in the mirrors so did suspect a few cuts had happened....

I just added fuel in the pitstop, left the tires on it, which was a good call given Erling would have gone past me and forced me to chase him down. Easier to be away and manage the pace I thought.

Supra was better than I expected, the setup I used was uploaded to the online folder if peeps would like it going forward. Just a case of keeping the turbo spinning to maximise the speed.

Grats to all the finishers.
