Moderator's Report

Phil Thornton takes his third win at the Ring to get his season off to the perfect start. There were many podium contenders but after polesitter Martin Hunt and the flying Paul Markey hit trouble, Dave Rainier and Ross Neilson battled over 2nd and 3rd with the wily Frenchman getting the nod.

Well done to all those who saw the flag at this most gruelling of venues. It gets easier from now on ;)

Server replay time: 0h00m59s

Phil and Sky are neck and neck on the run down to T1, but very far apart at either side of the track, Phil on the left and Sky on the right. Both turn into T1, Phil on a tighter line as he is on the inside, and contact is made. Sky runs wide and rejoins safely whilst Phil is unimpeded.

Having been behind Phil on the grid, Sky perhaps should have been more aware of his presence to his left. However at no point does one driver appear in the other's mirror, and as we know lateral vision in GPL is poor.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h01m42s

Mike Turner is recovering from a spin at T2 and rejoins the track on the right. Al Baldwin moves to pass him on the left. As Al draws alongside, Mike puts his foot down and his car slides right towards Al, causing the two to hit each other.

This offence would carry a total of two places, one for the incident and one for it being on lap one. However I've downgraded it to one as it was as much a mistake by Mike as it was careless driving.

Server replay time: 0h39m04s

Fran comes into the pit lane to take his mandatory stop and go penalty. However he does not come to a complete halt before setting off again. Drivers are reminded that their car must be completely stationary before they head back onto the track. Repeat offenders will be disciplined :)

Saw way more of the Nurby scenery than I really needed to this trip. Got a good start and we all kept out of bother in the first few corners, well done lads. Swapped a few places on the 1st lap with the first of many exploratory trips into the undergrowth and ended up with first Fabio, then new chum Dave Curtis snapping at my heels whilst trying to settle the beast down and get into some sort of rythm. By lap 3 I'd dropped Dave who was having some excursions of his own and set off after Bernie who'd pulled a gap. Laps4 and 5 were frightful and best forgotten. Last lap and Bernie must have been at least 10 seconds up the road. Somehow, I managed to put together a fairly good lap and hunted him down, until at the finish line the margin was a mere .287 seconds. Congrats to Bernie for hanging on under pressure, and especially the podium.....Phil, Dave Rainier and teamie Ross for their brilliant efforts. There's life in the old dog yet eh, Phil?    Roll Eyes

Well done to Phil on a great victory.

My race was as I expected. Not diven 67 cars much at all, and still learning which way the road goes at Nurby, so I really wasn't expecting much.

I made sure that there were plently of spot left before I joined, as it would of been unfair to take a spot away from a full time driver. I started to learn the track, and it did slowly start to make sense, I rememebered some sections from my pervious attempt. I did beat my PB, and finally got under 10 minutes. That's all I was aiming for so I was really pleased with that in Qually.

For the race I was just trying to keep it on the black stuff, which was easier said than done. With a few cars around, and sort of rememebering the sections, the temptation to push a little is too much, which is what always lead me to throwing it off the road, 3 times. Overall not unhappy, I've learnt a little more of Nurby, and I hope it will help me when we come here in the 65 cars.

Well done to all my Clark Hill team mates.

I tried to keep the car on the tarmac and put in 6 consistent laps all between 8:35 and 8:43.  Not blisteringly fast but consistency is the key here.

Cheers Phil, my best was about 8:35!! Smiley Seriously though, well done on the win. You showed pace when needed to get a good grid slot, then turned it down a notch to do a trouble free race, giving you victory by a considerable margin. Another win at the Ring makes you the Ring Meister I think.

For my part, I was looking forward to my first race at Nurby and it didn't disappoint. This track is such an immense challenge, and during the off-season I went from being daunted by it to growing to love it. Qually didn't go so well initially but I posted a time close to my PB and was pleased with 5th on the grid.

The race was spent having a great battle with Dave Rainier who was doing a good job in the Coop. Our positions changed as one or the other made an error, eventually Dave finished just in front of me to take second place - very well done sir. Initially our scrap was over fourth but Martin and Screwcutter (Paul Markey) had a big accident at Flugplatz putting them behind us. When I say big accident, it was just that, I came over the crest to see them both in mid air!! A pity for them as they were quicker than Dave and I, especially Martin who took pole.

Overall a solid start to the campaign, see you all at Mosport.

Sorry about that. I started with the BRM but the wheel (G25) calibration kept going off in a big way so I tried quitting, resetting the wheel and rejoining but the problem persisted. I then quit and selected the Cooper - and all was well. Very odd Roll Eyes

Just out of interest, would it have prevented us getting the full 19 drivers? So, if a driver/car slot is taken but then disconnected from, can it be reused? Or would Michael's BRM and Brabham entries have kept two drivers out?

If someone leaves, before the race starts, it free's up the slot. If they rejoin I think it remembers their current Qually time.

You have not mastered GPL, until you've mastered the Nurburgring.  I'm becoming a seasoned campaigner, with this being my 3rd visit to the track.  On both previous attempts, I'd started at the front, and failed to finish.  I hoped not to let the track win this time!

A last minute repair to my steering system proved useful, as it allowed me to put in two fast, and trouble free practice laps.  And I was able to sit out the remainder of practice on pole, despite Phil's late charge. Cool

The race started well, and I was able to slowly pull a gap on Phil's Ferrari.  But all was not well, as  Out of a clear blue sky,  a cloud started dumping rain on my helmet, and onto the track around it.  Only after the squall had passed, was I able to relocate the track, and chase after Modena's best.  Except that, each time I closed in, the rains returned!  Apparently, my tyres were unable to take the Nurb's punishment, and mine. :'(

The track and race became a matter of survival.  Depending on the weather, I was able to run  as high as 2nd, and as low as 6th, so I suppose a result somewhere in the middle seems adequate.  But I nonetheless claim a personal victory, due to survival - no resets needed!  More than a few of us saw the chequers, so I suggest we've some serious racing to do, before the Season's through.  Where's my umbrella?   thumbup1

Dont know how close you really came to beating me to the finishing post , my BRM seemed to have developed a mind of its own after various trips into the hedgerows , thankfully I could pull out a big enough gap on the long home straight to enable me to navigate the final chicane without binning it .

The one reason I didnt take the Coop because you can drive a really great lap here but end up a sitting duck on the run in to the finish

Well, overall I'm quite happy with that outing - could have been/was expecting a lot worse!

I really have not been round Nurby that much;  just enough to get a (not good!) monster rank.

Bearing in mind that practice was the first drive of the day, I managed to get an ok-ish lap together (once I'd reconnected a few times to sort out sound problems).  Even with an off/perching on a hill awaiting to be passed before rejoining & an engine problem on the run down the final section, my time was only about 3 seconds over my previous PB.  Not pretty, but good by my standards.

Took the start very slowly.   With this being my first appearance at UKGPL,   I was very keen to not cause a mass pile-up on the way down to the 1st corner.    But maybe normal service for Mosport Wink

Whilst trying to follow Geoff round I also was hitting that heavy rain mentioned elsewhere.  However, did manage to beat my previous PB by 20seconds, although with about 3 crashes there is still a lot of scope for much improvement.

The last few laps were pretty lonely, although Prib still made it clear that dawdling would not be wise.

In summary,  was enjoyable despite the location.   Admittedly I'd say other incidents helped the top-10 finish;  still - I'll take it all the same!

So thanks chaps for the grid slot & race.

My PC PSU packed in after the race,  so maybe that loose screw DID fall in there after all... Still, that's why it's useful to keep a few old parts around - you never know when they'll come in handy.

Cheers,
Dave.

Just a quick reminder that any incident reports need to be submitted by the end of Sunday (the 6th). I will begin moderating them the day after with a view to publishing the report before the next event at Mosport.

There were two or three incidents in the red zone on lap one so if you were involved, please submit your report using the link below the race results table. It's your chance to give your point of view Smiley
