Moderator's Report

Fantastic close racing at Kyalami. Nobody appears to have been naughty with the pit wall and people have generally behaved themselves. Nothing at all in the red zone. However Maddog and Sky have been reported to the Head for fighting in the playground.

Server replay time: 0h02m28s

Martin and Sky come together spectacularly at Crowthorne. Martin makes a genuine mistake. However, genuine or not, mistakes that take people out do, unfortunately, attract penalties. The incident is caused by the maddog being a bit gung-ho into the braking zone. Coming from that far back it was extremely hard to make the pass stick cleanly.

It is worth saying that Sky could help himself by leaving more room.

Unfortunately, Ronnie also gets caught up but isn't too badly affected.

The best fit is: "The victim made no mistakes and was driving their normal line at normal speed. The shunter had lost control on the approach to the braking zone and consequently braked later than intended."

UKGPL Season 22 65 Intermediates Trophy
Race 4 Kyalami

Welcome to the fourth round of the Intermediates Trophy for Season 22.

This time we are at Kyalami. A well known track but not without difficulty. Usually sees some close racing.

*** NOTE***
Ensure that you have the pit wall in place. Those without the pit wall will risk disqualification. Advantage can be gained without it and in particular, drivers should ensure that they know where the pit entry is WITH THE PIT WALL IN PLACE

The standard Papyrus track has a pit wall but there are patches available that remove it. The absence of a pit wall will not stop you from joining the race but anybody seen by the moderators miraculously driving through the pit wall on the server replay will risk disqualification.

Follow these instructions to restore the wall if you have a mod that has removed it:
METHOD 1:
To place a wall between the pits and the track, rename or remove the kyalami.trk and kyalami.3do files from your kyalami folder.
METHOD 2:
To reinstall the original Papyrus Armco, rename or remove the Armco_s.mip file from your kyalami folder.

As with the previous tracks, there will be crashes and patience is a must. The first lap will be fully moderated within the red zone. The red zone will extend to the end of the Leeukop bend on the first lap

Please check the Season 22 pages for details regarding rules and the Intermediates Trophy pages in particular.

Please see the Intermediates registration thread for an explanation of the chassis allocations shown below:
https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=10017.0

Please ensure that you take a valid chassis for your group. Cookie and I will be keeping an eye on you! THIS IS IMPORTANT AS THE CHASSIS GROUPINGS AND YOUR SEEDING HAS CHANGED. Please check the Intermediate Chassis thread.

First race in the Inters where I wasn't totally outclassed. Held down a respectable 6th spot for a while until my one & only spin at Crowthorne relegated me to 10th.
Maddog span about 3 laps from the end so had someone to keep me company until the chequered flag. Martin - I have no idea how you manage to put a wheel on the verge so often without losing time.
Finishing result was a bit of a Honda masterclass.

Yeah Paul, I am a bad guy, but I love it Grin

This race was all about concentration and self-discipline to stay cool and quiet.
It worked nearly perfect for me, as I only had one critical situation when my concentration was disturbed by watching Pribluda...
My setup was not the fastest, but it was save to stay on track and keep the engine alive Wink

The greatest moment was when Max had blown his engine and parked in the middle of the road.
I stopped breathing and prayed he will stay where he is. He did! Thanks!
Ronnie gave me the adrenaline I needed to keep my pace up most of the race,
but then something happened to him and I had a very save gap til the finish line.

Grats Bernie for the best non Honda driver!

Cheers

Got to admit , I did spoil the symmetry of the results columb  Grin

More down to everyone elses mistakes than anything though I did have a couple of moments myself , one in particular avoiding Martin as he got very sideways into T1 , lost a few places here and there but always seemed to pick them up a few laps later . Think my "armchair " set up helped , made the BT11 very easy to pedal around at a modest pace , though Geoff made me up the pace beyond the comfort zone a few times  Wink

Good clean racing was had by all throughout the field I suspect , looking forward to the next thrash  Grin

Congrats Axel and the pod boys , commiserations to Martin Steve and Sky both who were much better than there results show

Backmarker, blown engine, pitstop happened!!!

This relegated me to third but I would have settled for a podium before the race driving a Honda in anger for the first time. To be honest you and Max were faster and I'm sure Martin and Sky would have conetested the top three if they had not departed earlier.

Dave if your reading, I have not seen a replay yet. But if that pass of mine at turn 1 hindered your race don't hesitate to let me know and/or put a report in. I broke late and took the inside line and hugged the inside to leave you room on the outside. I felt no contact but did note you dropped back on my Prib. Apologies if I caused you to go off.

If anyone can pass on any pearls of wisdom regarding not blowing the Honda engine it would be much appreciated. I noted in the chat before the race people saying something about changing gear well before the red line etc but this was all a bit late for this race for me. But since this car is likely to be used increasingly any thoughts from anyone willing to pass on any knowledge would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Grats as ever to the podium and better luck next time Martin and Sky. Your pace in qualifying deserved better.

Just sit in the cars in replay and look for the revs!
You allways went up to 13 000 min and more...
I tried to avoid more than 12 200 min!

When it happened I was 2nd not so far behind Cookie (2 or 3 seconds) and I was FURIOUS against you because I was ejected out of the track and broke a wheel !
Then, after the race, I watched the replay and could see you were not responsible at all but the gap between our 2 cars were too small for this  censored GPL crashbox !

so I will put a report ...against GPL crashbox conceptors !  Smiley

My race was a fortunate one.  Had we been racing at Snowitude, it would've been difficult to avoid all the white Honda's, which seem to be suddenly fashionable, amongst our group.  Almost everyone was wearing one!  I decided to stand out from the crowd, by contrasting in a much darker shade, but sporting a bright orange nose, and with the hope of keeping it clean.  Cool

My qualifying setup, was good enough for 3rd on the grid, so I wore it for the main event.  This helped me hound the 2 leaders on the first lap, and to pull alongside Sky at the start of lap 2.  The combination of BRM against Honda, is an unusual one in my experience, and my late braking maneuver ended badly, as I learned the Honda's brakes were superior to mine.  This recent Honda addition is having his share of bad luck ATM, so I apologise for adding to it. Huh

Thereafter, for me it became a matter of doing the rounds, amongst the midfield runners. The BRM had better acceleration than the fashionable crowd, but lacked the stopping power to go with it.  The greener parts of the track were suitable for wearing out on corner exits.  But strangely on corner entry, they made me look rather untidy.  So various scraps ensued with those wearing white, up and down the field, as my setup started to unravel!

Good company in close racing made for an enjoyable event.  But I might prefer a number in green, next time out, and work on the entry.  Roll Eyes

Not everyone was in white!!! Wink

I thought I'd give myself a big challenge and decided to take the Cooper.  It provided me with some very close racing throughout most of the race until I had an off when closely following Geoff and got a bit too close trying to stay as close in as possible and take all the advantage I could of any tow.

It left me too far back to latch on to anyone and I completely lost enthusiasm to push so cruised to the finish.

I'll not be at Belgium, but will hopefully make another couple of races.

As a side note: I'm not sold on the season effectively turning into a spec race of Hondas now. I know it is unlikely to change (and wouldn't expect it to) but can the system used in Historics be considered for next season? (i.e. higher the championship position, the slower the chassis).
