Moderator's Report

An entirely uneventful first lap except for Fabio sacrificing himself when he got a bit close to one of the MANY Hondas. Well done everybody.

UKGPL Season 22 65 Novices Trophy
Race 6 Panchine

Welcome to the 6th round of the Novices Trophy for Season 22. First time for the Novices at Panchine which is a fantasy track. The Historics had a fantastic race here last year and as a fast flowing circuit there could be plenty of dicing. There are a couple of jumps, a tricky turn or two and very sticky hedges, so be careful. It is a relatively long circuit so space should open up.

The first lap will be fully moderated within the red zone. The red zone will cover the whole of the first lap up to the end of the Curvone Pianetefiore.

Please check the Season 22 pages for details regarding rules and the Novices Trophy pages in particular.

It is very important that drivers are FULLY familiar with the rules relating to Shift-R. EVERY Shift-R MUST be followed by a Stop-and-Go or the driver will be excluded.

Please see the Novices registration thread for an explanation of the chassis allocations shown below:
https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=9196.0

Please ensure that you take a valid chassis for your group. THIS IS IMPORTANT AS THE CHASSIS GROUPINGS AND YOUR SEEDING HAS CHANGED. Please check the Novice Chassis thread. I will be checking.

There are some new faces potentially amongst us who have been assigned to Group I

I was browsing the evenings results, and came across this one. Very happy to see Norm finally cracking it and getting that elusive first win, and in some style too. I still remember that race at Spa in S20 and your trademark engine blow that pulled me out of trouble just at the right time..BIG GRATS NH, given your speed surely we will see more of the same in the future   clap clapclap

Strange race really. Norm was dominant all weekend (ahem) but as we set off everyone was pretty close but on lap 2 - disaster there was a pile up in front of me and I tried to avoid it but in going wide hit the grass and span Sad I think I took Adam out but his car took a very strange line so I am not certain. Off I went and I had inherited fourth - Nigel was 250 yards down the road and obviously behind several of the boys had had to reset because I had clear air. I set about trying to catch Nigel but without much hope because he was over a second quicker than me in qually but as I followed there were some corners I could definitely take better and I slowly wound him in. Catching is one thing, passing quite another. As soon as I caught him he upped the pace and I made a few small errors trying to go fast rather than driving smoothly. He just drove away.

Hendy and Norm seemed to have gone so it was about keeping Rog behind. I was alarmed to find that Rog had got within 700 yards haveing been well over .8 miles behind so I concentrated on being smooth and forgot about Rog and Nigel. I then gained time on them both! With gaps of 8 and 14 seconds fourth was in the bag as long as I kept it clean. Up in front Hendy had some problem and Nigel caught him. I thought maybe I could get third but whatever issue he had was a blip as he easily maintained the gap.

Pleased that I maintained concentration but this is a track that needs a full grid so the low turnout was a bit disappointing.

Happy with the result and now it is on to the green hell - couldn't be more different, 5 twisty twisty laps and I think there might be a few more crashes....

Now I just hope that Adam forgives me and that whoever mods me is kind... of course, I dont NEED to report it... lol

Though a house move and associated broadband problems is preventing me from taking part in the Pro's at the moment, i too want to add my congratulations to my team mate at Mountside Racing, NHance.

A long overdue victory. Knew you could do it eventually.

Well Done.  Wink

Grats NH & Nigel

Had a good few days of practice on this one during which I blew two engines so I was extra careful on the jump & with gear changes. Keeping a smooth line kept Nigel away for some time but he slowly caught as I tired and got less and less tow from NH and finally I made a mistake on two of the esses that sealed my fate.

This was only my second race in the Cooper (the first one went badly) and I was expecting another mid-late finish so I consider myself lucky this time Smiley

Those missed gears at Zolder were a symptom that my H shifter may be worn as I suffered lots of missed gears since & jumping out of gear. Took the top off & vacuumed it & found its ok if I shift very deliberately. It only jumped out once in qually & I missed gear once in the race. Won't rush into a new one just yet.

Well its a win at last. My 57th novices race. Don't think I did anything to trouble the Mods so it should be ok. I had to take the fast sweeeper off line when Rog challenged but that let others through as well. This time, for once, I avoided the trouble & after Nigel spun it was a matter of using the Honda power to pass Hendy's Cooper. Once I had built a gap where he was out of the tow I thought this is my best chance ever. Close quarter stuff ain't my forte so once I was away it was concentrate, concentrate & I supprised myself that I maintained it. With Nigel 2nd & Bad Blood 4th it was a bit of a new faces event.  Well done to them & Hendy. Low entry so I hope some of the regulars are back for the next one.

Thanks to all those who supported & helped me with advice over the, well its years now, & assured me that one day a win would come my way. I won't name them as there are so many & I don't want to miss anyone. Some nice comments above, thanks. The remainder of the season? - not too concerned, what happens, happens.

At least now I can forget about season 19 Westwood Park where I was lying 2nd to Pete Maestro & deliberately let Ross Neilson, who was a bit wild in those days,( c'mon, who said he still is Wink) past surmising he would tangle with Pete. He did, leaving me in 1st place with a 12 second lead & five laps to go. Then the engine blew :'(. Ever since I have reminded Clutch about this on an almost weekly basis. Not any more. Its over I'm a winner now Grin. Thanks to everyone who makes UKGPL possible

A few hours practice gave me a setup I was really pleased with but the race was a different story. I didn't beat 2'20 first 3 or 4 laps which put an end to any decent result. On lap 2- 2 cars in front just after the fast right under the bridge must have come close to each other as one was kicking up dust and the other going a little slower than me- I passed one got along side the next but sailed a little wide in the corner which probably caused the melee as there were 2 others beside me in the hedge. A few laps later I came across a honda in front of me at the esses  before the jump who was much slower than me at this section- on trying to pass I was hit from behind and lost a wheel- I didnt shift-r for this as I didnt think I was at fault. My best lap was the last one which surprised me as I turned in too early under the bridge and got wiggly on the kerb. I had a little trouble in the braking zones on the downshift with my control pad not wanting to shift quickly. Well done to the winner and I'm sorry if I compromised anyone.  This could be my first run in with the mods but I hope not. Im shipping my panchine tuned honda to the ring for the next race. Smiley

could not catch paul.

Possibly the first and last time you will say that  Grin

@Johnny - you definitely took a shift-r if you lost a wheel but didn't take a stop. Under the rules that is strictly a DQ. If you shift-r (even if it is not your fault) you MUST take a stop. I will have a word with the mods (who may just turn a blind eye as it is your first season) Wink but don't do it again! As for the Lap 2 melee I suspect I might be the one in trouble... Sad

Well done Norm- it couldn't happen to a nicer fella. I may one day have the same success, it certainly won't be from lack of trying Smiley
I got lucky with a setup for qually which differed from my usual approach but gave great feel and good times on race fuel. Then for some reason when I transferred that setup to the 'race' button it applied gearing from an earlier setup, which meant less than optimal gears for those long straights-I was about 4-5 mph down on everyone. So to 'over'compensate I applied the little known Waza technique, RTFTOI. I have been questioned before as to how my engines last while employing this method, and the answer is they don't always Smiley
All the time while chasing Hendy down during those last laps I was expecting the valves to depart through the exhaust ports, but it held together just fine, and I scraped my 2nd 2nd place in Novices. Phew.
At least this race felt like fun from the start, even though it might have looked like a Spec race from the outside. And well done to all finishers. Good to see you come back to the colours Paul.
Practice for the Green Hell starts NOW.

Your quite right, I meant to say stop and go.
On the subject of stop and go, I like legends because of its etiquette and good sporting rules and do honestly try my best to follow them. The sporting regulations as regards Shift-r quote "However if a driver was forced to do a Shift-R through no fault of their own (for example being blatantly knocked off the track by another driver - please see the Penalty Guidelines for more details) they are exempt from having to make a S&G. This is commonly referred to as making a "no-fault Shift-R".
I was under the understanding that no stop and go was required if an incident was not your fault Shocked
