Moderator's Report

An entirely uneventful first lap except for Fabio sacrificing himself when he got a bit close to one of the MANY Hondas. Well done everybody.

You are quite right Johnny. The rules were changed so that every Shift-R needed a pit stop and the main reason for that was that some drivers took advantage of the rule and argued that they were not at fault so didn't need a stop. That was a bit of a nightmare to moderate so we changed to Shift-R=Stop. The Sporting Regs, however, were not changed.

In this case, I won't apply any penalty but that is the rule we will apply for this season at least.

I will raise it as part of the Mid-Season review.

The rules should have been clearer Johnny. Thanks for raising it. It is (was?) not a popular change in all quarters (and I can fully understand why) but it was taking up a huge amount of time in Moderating and appeals. We have tried to apply a lighter touch with the moderating but make it as fair to everyone as possible. This is Black and White, when drivers start arguing about shades of grey and 50.003% overlap you know things need to change!

But what about when the fault is blatantly obvious,  or a 3rd party accepts responsibility ?

I can appreciate the need where there may be some doubt as to who is at fault e.g. overtaking , warp etc.

But take another example ,  a driver leaves the track ( for whatever reason ) then makes a bad rejoin like, driving across the track instead of joining at an narrow angle ?

Or a driver minding his own business and suddenly a S/R car appears right in front who'm cannot be avoided ?

Can there not be room left for claiming the right to s/r after such an incedent without further incuring a time penalty (pit stop ) , post race ?

Pit stops can also be hazardous , very easy to do a mistake when trying to make up lost time due to some one elses bad driving.

On some tracks , the pit exit can cause problems to those on track passing at high speed , Brands Hatch for e.g.

In the not too distant past we used to run pit stop penalties as part of the handicap system , these were given up for various reasons  but mostly because  pit stops caused more problems than they cured  Wink

I'll make it part of the Mid-Season review Bernie. If drivers are very unhappy maybe they could take a 'no-fault' Shift-R but if the mod feels they were at fault it is a DQ? At the moment the rules for the series are a little ambiguous. It is a bit of a minefield though. Your engine blows - is that no-fault? Would you expect somebody to review the whole race to see if the engine was being looked after?

It is not ideal but it is an attempt to find a balance between fairness and a cartload of work for the Mods. Even with the Red Zone, it is quite a lot of work.

Good idea Paul and we really DO appreciate all the hard work you guys do so's we selfish moaning old sods can enjoy our racing

To be honest I have never been in favour of allowing S/R and stil think we would all benefit from it being abolished completely , IMO it encourages poor driving standards and allows drivers to take risks they would not dream of doing in real life .

PS

Cant see how blowing your engine can be blamed on some one else  Wink

There was a time, not so long ago, when Ukgpl Moderators, gave us the freedom to self-Moderate resets, and occasionally correct us.  With the influx of drivers that came with the GT mod, possibly the need to be so accommodating, was thought to diminish.  But I think more likely, we gained one or two unpleasant characters, who went and upset our hard working Moderators, who then said, "To Hell with it!"

Our current 65 handicapping, where we've lost several of the original cars, is less than ideal, but also helps to avoid, those who like to moan and complain. So if 65 numbers are starting to drop, is this entirely the fault of our supervisors, who give their time freely?  Or should we look towards anyone at Ukgpl who decides to be unpleasant, or confrontational?  I'd look towards our members behaviour off the track - meaning, any member who is immoderate, and ill-willed.
