WELCOME TO THE UKGPL Season 22 - Pro Trophy

The 8th race of the season is at the Solitude Ring.
The Solituderennen events and the 11.4 km Solitudering near Stuttgart were named after the nearby Castle Solitude. Motorsports events were held there from 1903 to 1965.  Due to the narrow track, initially mainly motorcycle events were held there until 1956. The track and the pits were widened in early 1957 and sports car racing was staged by the automobile club ADAC.  From 1961 to 1964, non-Championship Formula One Grand Prix races were also held, in addition to previous Formula 2 and Formula Junior events. The last "Grand Prix of Solitude" with F1 cars was held in July 1964, including drivers like Jim Cark, Jack Brabham, Graham Hill, Chris Amon, John Surtees. In 1965 the last "Solituderennen" on the Solitude track was an F2 race, won by Chris Amon.
The 1964 race was won by Jim Clark in the Lotus 33 and I was there with my father watching it from the natural tribunes at one of the last corners.

Drivers beginning season 22 with this race have a free car choice!
All others have to keep their chosen car for the rest of the season,
they will only be allowed to swap chassis in exceptional circumstances and only with the approval of the moderator.

Driver lists can be found on the Pro Trophy championship standings page.

There will be full moderation of lap one Red Zone and reported incidents for the rest of the race.
Please submit incident reports within a week after the race so that the moderators report may be out before the next race.
Full time drivers have priority access to the server until 21.00 UK time.

Looks like I've already voted (I vaguely recall a Watkins Glen race this season)! See you on track. I'll try not to get in the way of the championship contenders.

Sorry but did you change the track layout after quali?

OK, did not think so, it was just me that did not turn the right way and for some strange reason the result was a three-wheeler that did not turn at all but I take this as one of my drop results then.

Grats to the winner, WD.

got a good starting position and because of Tristans keydriving, iwas quiet sure I would be first into t1. I expected a close race but many of the fast drivers had accidents. I kept safe pace, but saw Evil catch up on me and I did some "qually laps" when we were around half way to finish. Evil disappeared and I had a 12 sec lead to Al. I waited a bit so we could finish in formation Smiley.

Grats to Tom and to Al for getting to the finish on such an unforgiving track.

I used an old setup from Silverstone ( I think) and tweaked the camber angles slightly, which seemed to work OK. But once the race started I quickly realised that my gear ratios were too low, when Al was able to close up easily on the long straight although the Honda was pulling over 12.5k revs and I was having to back off!!! Shocked

When Tristan and Sergio tangled on lap 1 I tried the old trick of aiming for where one of the cars was, in the hope that it would not be there when I arrived at the scene...it worked, but it was mighty close!!!  eek but it put me into 2nd place with Tom a few seconds ahead.

Al continued to threaten every time we went down the long straight and I was having to squeeze far too many revs out of the engine to stay ahead.....I was seriously worried that it would not survive!!

The Honda definitely had the edge through the twisty bits on the return run to the start line and I was concentrating on pulling a small cushion on each lap to keep Al behind me. But sure enough eventually a couple of missed down shifts ( actually I manged to drop into Neutral instead of 1st for the Esses at the end of the straight TWICE!!) coupled with the wrong gearing put paid to any chance keeping all the whizzy bits in the correct place and the engine expired.  Undecided
Maybe I should have done a bit more ( in fact ANY!) practice for this race to get those gear ratios right as the Waza is notorious for engine failures if abused... and I did abuse it somewhat lol.  Roll Eyes

Well, i've now moved house and FINALLY got my internet connection back.

Unfortunetly, GPL has taken a back seat to the usual house move chores, so when i arrived at surely one of the best GPL Tracks, Solitude, i was out of practice and, like Evil, had some horrendous gear ratio's to deal with from a set up that i must have created years ago in my 'keyboard days'.

Qualified at the back, and knew i'd have to floor it lap after lap to get anywhere in the race and try and get used to GPL all over again. Struggled to find a balance in terms of chassis and gearing and in the end it was all too much trying to hang on.

Ran wide and flipped it on the twisty back section of the track on Lap 2 (very poor effort) and that was that.

Love Solitude which is a fantastic track, Love GPL, but as the saying goes, failure to prepare is preparing to fail.  Smiley

Woeful lack of prep here too, though Tom kindly helped fast-track my progress with a quick practice session together pre-race. Ran race fuel in qually so felt confident to push hard from the start (for once) & followed Clive's path through the lap 1 mayhem to emerge in 3rd. Couldn't quite believe I was able to gain on Clive under braking for the hairpin - toyed with the idea of diving up the inside several times but wasn't sure if my heart could take the prospect of outbraking the master of late-braking Cheesy (Must have been those missed downshifts Clive as the only other explanation was that I'd entered a parallel universe laugh ) Besides that, it soon became clear that Clive's superior pace around the back part of the circuit was helping to drag me clear of Fulvio & Alex who were lurking threateningly rather too close behind. Thanks to the Honda slipstream with about 5 laps to go we'd eked out a 7 second gap to Fulvio & I set about plotting where I might attempt a cunning move on Clive... only for Evil's engine to let go Undecided With Fulvio racing as hard as ever & no more juicy Honda tow, I realised I'd have to find some more speed if I wanted to hold onto 2nd so stepped up my pace as much as I could. I seemed to just about have enough in hand, though I did chuckle when I saw Tom waiting up ahead in case I needed some extra help & of course for the team formation finish Wink Hearty congrats to Tom for a well-deserved victory & Fulvio for a great chase.
