I joined IGOR at 9:00 and the server wasn't up so I checked the race announcement and it stated 10:00.  Unfortunately I mistook that for praccy starting at 10:00 (because the time posted here usually refers to the time the server starts).  When I logged back into IGOR at 10:00 that race had just started and I missed it Sad.  My fault, I need to check more carefully next time.

I can't remember the last time I did a Pro race (probably last century) so I thought I'd better practice with realistic damage. After half an hour I was seriously considering withdrawing from this series. Ten laps to qualify as a finisher? I couldn't do three! I eventually managed to run ten laps but eight were in a car that didn't like left-handers. I learned that I can lap a bent car more consistently than a straight one. GPL - World of Anomalies.

Qualifying went well. Possibly too well. After 4 clean laps and a new PB I decided that would do. I then saw Ronnie was 5 secs faster. Gulp. I watched the last 18 mins of qualifying on the pit view and there seemed to be far more cars leaving the pits than there were completing a lap.

I was in a false position on the grid. I knew Fulvio and Dave weren't 3 seconds slower than me (Fulvio turned out to be 3 seconds faster!). I don't like having faster drivers behind me on the grid and it was worse than normal because they were going racing while I was on a drive to survive. It went wrong very quickly. I went into Broad Lane Corner backwards and finished up facing across the track watching everyone go by. Everyone except Paul Bird anyway. He passed me on lap 3 when Paul W span at the first chicane and I span too. This is a habit I must break. I did it again later.

I settled down last behind the two Pauls and Bernie. I wasn't going to consider racing anyone until I got to half distance. By the time I did though, I was last, with Dave over a minute up the road and there wasn't anybody left to race. Bernie nearly made it. I was following him on lap 10, thinking I might try and pass him on the next lap, when Ronnie came rushing up behind. I moved over and lost enough ground so I didn't see what happened at the tight right hander. There is so much clipping at this corner that it brings a new meaning to "blind bend". I suddenly found the track blocked by a burning Bernie and an inverted Ronnie. I stopped and was hit by Göran. It wasn't his fault. By the time he saw me it was too late.

The top three went by and in the second half of the race I only saw Fulvio, who passed me on the hill with the pub in the sky and promptly binned it in the next chicane. I span into the bank and finally managed to damage the car. Nothing improves my setups more than a bit of minor suspension damage though and my last three laps were my fastest.

In hindsight I was too tentative but if I hadn't been maybe I wouldn't have finished.

And Ronnie, 2:21 is NOT cruising.

Point taken Fester. Maybe I meant 2.21/cruising for a bruising!!! Believe it or not but I'm new to the 66 cars but I like the challenge of them compared to the new F2 cars so opted for this series. The ferrari just suited suited my driving style and I like this track because I think it has a nice rhythm to it. But boy is it scary and I hate to say it but the next two Monsanto and Ahvenisto look like they will fray my nerves as well. Pro is tough and having to complete 50% of the laps to score points is tougher still but I am already a fan of this Historic series.

That was very thoughtful of you to keep me company...

This is a habit I must break. I did it again later.
Please don't. I like the company.  Grin

That was nice. But the only thing I am satisfied with in this race really is my quali performance. After that I was mixing good laps with not so good laps.

So as it is done in other situations I would like to thank a number of people.

The track, well not a person maybe but anyway because passing was not easy,

Al, for not passing me allthough he was in a good position to do so at times.

Ronnie, for messing with Bernie, if he had not I do not think I would have ever caught up, he was driving really well, after I "let" him bye by making a mistake in the last corner.

Samb, or rather his wheel coming off the desk, I mean how many ways of misfortune is there?

Evil, for not being quite quick enough, did you learn the track during quali?

Tim, Phil and Hristo, for not showing up, I promise I will not delay the start of a race again.

And John, for not driving fantasy tracks.

To sum it up, I enjoy the win as I think it might be difficult to repeat it because of the potentially strong lineup and I do not think so many other drivers will be in so many problems at the same race ever again.

Göran

PS. @Paul, concerning the tracks, I cheat because this is what I am doing in my spare time, http://gplrank.schuerkamp.de/php-pub/user.php?showDetail=11,1,25372

I'd only ever tried this track in 67's & didn't really like it much (especially as it reminds me of being lost in Milton Keynes) but in 66's it was a real blast, albeit somewhat impossible to overtake on hammer Held 2nd off the line & leader Goran looked to be struggling with his handling during the early laps - a slight error on the last turn allowed me a run at him down the main straight, which would've been a damn fine plan had the straight actually been straight... I moved alongside to power serenely ahead, only to find that me & the road were going in decidedly different directions. One almighty spin later, I rejoined in 4th, rather fortunate to still be running at all after a good clonk with the barrier.

My second piece of good fortune came when Clive outbraked himself after the long back straight & allowed me to nip ahead into 3rd. By this time, Ronnie had moved into the lead & while I was able to close up on Goran, neither of us seemed to make much of an impression on Ronnie who looked to be in control & driving well out front. Luck #3 arrived with a bang as I arrived at the end of the back straight to find the road completely blocked with mangled & burning cars, one of which was the unfortunate Ronnie. The last 10 laps were very exciting as tried very hard to get past Goran who despite making a few little errors would always skilfully manage to cover off any enticing gaps with the rear of his car. Still my efforts to get past weren't altogether fruitless as I managed to net the fastest lap, which is as rare as the proverbial hen's teeth in my stats. Many thanks to the guys being lapped for giving us so much room - congrats to Goran for a good win under pressure & oddly enough with Clive in 3rd & Dave in 4th, the opening race replicated the finishing order of last season's championship.

lol Goran guessed it.  I really was learning this track through qually and the race.

I had downloaded the track and tried about 3 or 4 exploratory laps so that I had at least some idea of where it went.

Qually was a bit of a shock when I saw Goran's lap times, followed by Ronnie and Al who were getting quicker. I settled for working on my race setup on full fuel hoping to pick up speed as I got the track fixed in my brain....... that was not too sucessful in qually!! but I managed a lucky 5th on the grid I think.

It was quite obvious that this circuit was no place to make a mistake. too many lamp posts and walls, so for the first few laps I concentrated on keeping things steady and safe.
Gradually I could see where I could brake later or carry a little more speed ( when Al passed me I had exceeded the braking abilities of my Brabham!!  lol and found the limit ).
Slowly I was knocking bits off the lap time and once Ronnie had retired ( he really should have had the win, a real shame Ronnie!) I was able to keep Al and Goran in sight, but I was not prepared to risk going any faster with the setup I had so I settled for 3rd spot unless the 2 guys in front got physical.

As fantasy tracks go this one was quite good, but it does require a lot of bravery around blind corners and confidence in your setup to stick to the tarmac and not slip into the scenery.

Grats to Goran and Al and commiserations to Ronnie.

I was going to break....... shortly after crossing the finishing line at the end of the race! Sorry again Bernie (and I'm aware its not the first time), I did not mean to end your race let alone my own.
