Moderator's Report

First race of the season and a full grid. So were we all good and everybody got through the Red Zone cleanly?

Errr... not quite.

I could have penalised the entire field just about but I have chosen to be extremely lenient as this was very difficult for Novices to deal with. The point of penalties is to improve driving.

If people will not or can not improve, they WILL be penalised.

Server replay time: 0

Giovani blows his engine and makes a Pit stop and resets in the pits. He does not take an additional stop and go for resetting, which he should do. You CANNOT take your stop and go before you reset.

To compound the error he drives into the pit THROUGH the pit wall, which was specifically mentioned in the race post.

The pit at Kyalami is very difficult to enter at high speed and not having the wall in place gives a definite advantage.

Unfortunately both of these are penalised by disqualification.

I must apologise for publishing this late. I had forgotten to add the incident before publishing.

Server replay time: 0h01m01s

Fabio gets too close to the back of JohnnyP and taps him. Johnny helps cause this by changing his line under braking having got too close to JonnyO. I cannot stress enough that racing hard into T1 is a recipe for disaster in the mid-field. It was just all too tight and carnage ensues. Al is left nowehere to go and is one of many innocent victims!

Paul V finds anovel way to avoid the jam by spinning on the kerb at Crowthorne, crossing the track and re-joining on the other side! Amazing!

Boggy slows but is biffed by Adam who then rejoins into Billy. Boggy having done the right thing unfortunately then blots his copy book by joining right in front of Bernie.

Bernie is late through after being tagged by Ivan. Ivan then goes on to side swipe another driver and narrowly gets away with an ill-judged rejoin in front of Nigel.

After a cracking start Nigel is a bit too keen to get on the gas out of Crowthorne and inspects Rog's exhaust a bit too closely. Unfortunately for Nigel he is launched skyward by Roberto.

Once Mr Smith starts off again, he does well to avoid Boggy who literally disappears in front of him.

Tony shows everyone how it should be done by slowing and weaving through!

ALL the drivers mentioned could have been penalised - please be more careful at T1. Losing a second on the first lap will not lose you the race but it might mean somebody else's race isn't ruined.

Server replay time: 0h08m30s

Roberto is caught out by Billy having an earlier braking point. It is the responsibility of the driver behind to ensure that they do not hit the man in front. Having track position allows a driver to control the pace and the driver behind MUST ensure that they do not plough into them.

In the spirit of this moderation, the penalty is ameliorated.

UKGPL Season 24 65 Novices Trophy
Race 1 Kyalami

Welcome to the opening round of the Novices Trophy for Season 24.

We start at 'our home' which is the English translation of the Zulu word 'Kyalami'. One of the original Papy tracks and therefore fairly well known, but not without difficulty. Usually sees some close racing.

The original, sweeping circuit was in use from 1961 until political sanctions eliminated the Grand Prix after the 1985 race. A very quick circuit, it yielded some memorable races. Gilles Villeneuve outfoxed team mate and home driver Jody Scheckter in a wet/dry race in 1979, and Alain Prost raced from the back to win in 1982. By the time the circuit held its last Grand Prix in its original incarnation cars were lapping the track in 1m 02s – 20 seconds faster than in 1967. But the politics of racing in Apartheid South Africa where racial segregation was practised put pressure on F1 to leave the country. Luckily we get to race without any of that and a lap time in the mid 1m 20s should prove very competitive.

*** NOTE***
Ensure that you have the pit wall in place. Those without the pit wall will risk disqualification. Advantage can be gained without it and in particular, drivers should ensure that they know where the pit entry is WITH THE PIT WALL IN PLACE

The standard Papyrus track has a pit wall but there are patches available that remove it. The absence of a pit wall will not stop you from joining the race but anybody seen by the moderators miraculously driving through the pit wall on the server replay will risk disqualification.

Follow these instructions to restore the wall if you have a mod that has removed it:
METHOD 1:
To place a wall between the pits and the track, rename or remove the kyalami.trk and kyalami.3do files from your kyalami folder.
METHOD 2:
To reinstall the original Papyrus Armco, rename or remove the Armco_s.mip file from your kyalami folder.

As with the previous tracks, there will be crashes and patience is a must. The first lap will be fully moderated within the red zone. The red zone will extend to the end of the Leeukop bend on the first lap

Please check the Season 24 pages for details regarding rules and the Novices Trophy pages in particular.

There are NO chassis restrictions for this race.

Race List = iGOR
Server = UKGPL3
IP address = ping ukgpl3.dyndns.org
Race date = 22/01/2013
Time = no later then 9:00pm UK Time (30-45 mins practice, race starts at 9:30pm)
Track = Kyalami (papy)
Variant = 65F1
Damage Model = Int
Qualifying time = 30 minutes
Race length = 28 laps
Password: see above

Qualifying may start before 9pm, if so, Reserve drivers should leave the server when 35 minutes of qualifying remains and only rejoin when 30 minutes of qualifying is left. This is to ensure that Full Time drivers get priority in joining.

Please restrict chat to pit messages if necessary, and this includes the end of the race, until all running drivers have completed the necessary laps.

The Novice races are run under Int Long rules and all incidents in the red zone on Lap 1, at least, will be moderated. For this race, the red zone extends to the last part of the Leeukop Bend. There is no limit on the amount of resets but EACH Shift/R MUST be followed by a Stop n Go. The pit entrance can be tricky here so a little practice may be adviasable. Better still, don't requier a reset!

65 Patch: The 2.02 Release of the 65mod can and should be used. You need a working installation of the 65 mod to install the 2.02 Update. All the 65 Mod files can be found here

Password: see above

No work today (snow u like) so I spent a happy hour or so this afternoon learning GPL's Kyalami and getting my car setup just so. I hope to use the same car throughout this season. Whilst racing I noticed in the top left of the screen five columns of times with rows labelled I, B, L & C. I know I'm going to kick myself for asking but what do these mean?

Also "and a lap time in the mid 1m 20s should prove very competitive." Oh lordy, my best time is only 1:32 and in my offline race Jim Clark could only manage 1:25.

EDIT: And my in car sound volume decreases when a lot of cars are on screen like at the start. Is this normal?

Prib will let you show less info if you find it a touch confusing--- like i do. I use the old prib display of just 2 rows of figures- best and current I think.

I have been at this for five years Tony and my best is 1:27 something and I would expect to average 1:29-1:30 in the race. That will be mid-field I suspect. Your lap times will come down very quickly but you might want to look at your gearing - what top speed are you getting as you come down the hill to Crowthorne?

BTW I am unsure about the volume thing but as long as you can hear the other cars that should be OK. In your options screen make sure that the number of sounds is set to the maximum (16 I think).

When I say mid 1:20s I mean 1:25-1:26... lol - NOT 1:20.x!!!

Well, I was well prepared and got a 1:26.8 and found myself in 11th! The top guys really are too fast for the Novices.

Phillipe and myself missed out and Rainier went to the Pros.

Not a happy Chief Mod at the moment. Sad

This isnt good with the track being oversubscribed , I joined late due to a small domestic problem only to find the grid full , tried a few times and luckily sneeked on to the server when dave left . No time for qually , started from almost the back of the grid ,so far back couldnt see the flag , took it easy into T1 for the expected log jam only to get rear ended , recovered then someone else did a spin turn right in front of me , by the time I gathered it up the race was gone  .

We need to get the Int's back on track please , surely we could sort something out for moderating , how about a few of us take turns about, I'd be up for doing a couple of races , maybe more at a push. Need volunteers though dont know what's involved , how much time , etc.

Just how hard can it be to start an argument  Undecided

It seems there are a lot more Novices drivers now than the server can hold yet we're not running full grid in Pro's, so perhaps some should switch over? Or as Bernie says, bring Int back somehow...

all I can say, is Im not even good enough to be a "novice"

Im no where near fast enuf  Undecided

really consistent showing for me.. started near the back, finished near the back. oh and was lapped again.

all this doing 1:26 - 1:28's

how good am I going to have to get ?

had a good time though.  had a few decent laps in all, and saw very little trouble other than the usual T1 stuff.  missed it all (luckily, even tho I spun off) but did take a tiny little nudge from behind but other than having to rejoin from the grass, not a bad race in all.

a few points for Blue Moose Racing, perhaps ?
