Moderator's Report

SUMMARY
Having posted a blistering lap to secure pole position, Attilio failed to get off the line when the flag dropped. The Ferrari engine was singing but the drive train couldn't put the power down. Sadly Attilio had to retire, compounding an unlucky start to the season. On his return to UKGPL , John Bradbury had qualified his Cooper in second place and promptly took the lead as Attilio's Ferrari ground to a halt. Third placed Hristo had to take evasive action to avoid hitting the pole sitter which lost him momentum and a place to King Hiro. In an effort get the place back Hristo ran wide at the Hella Kurve and lost another place to Evil Clive.

It wasn't long before Hristo had worked his way back up to second place and set about challenging John Bradbury for the lead. The pair circulated at qualifying pace with Hristo gradually edging closer until he took the lead on lap 16 at the entry to Dr. Tiroch Kurve. The extra power of the Brabham gave Hristo the chance to pull away from John's Cooper but having eked out a gap of a second, Hristo put a wheel on the grass at Dr. Tiroch Kurve on lap 19 and spun off the track. Having regained the lead, John put the hammer down and Hristo set off in pursuit again. With 2 laps to go, Hristo still had 2 seconds to make up but the Brabham wasn't up to the challenge and the engine expired. John cruised home to a convincing win on his return to UKGPL. Well done John.

Evil held onto second place in his Brabham despite his computer gremlins and Fulvio claimed the final podium place in his beloved Ferrari.

Server replay time: 0h00m46s

Lap 1 - Start Line - Phil Thornton and Bob Whitwell
Phil gets a very slow start with excessive wheel spin whereas Bob gets a flyer. As Phil tries to control the wheel spin the car lurches left just as Bob decides to overtake. Contact is made but both cars continue apparently unaffected.

Server replay time: 0h04m17s

Lap 2 - Rindt Kurve - Hristo Itchov and King Hiro
King Hiro leads into Rindt Kurve and takes the normal racing line which sweeps wide at the centre of the bend between two apexes, one early and one late. Hristo sees a gap as King Hiro moves wide after the first apex. Hristo stays close to the inside and as King Hiro moves back into the second apex slight contact (warp plays some part) is made. King Hiro loses a wheel on the armco barrier and is out of the race. Hristo continues unaffected.

Hristo spotted a gap and managed to achieve 100% overlap before contact was made. Whilst it was not a move most people would be capable of, it was a legal and fair challenge.

King Hiro was taking the normal line and was not expecting a challenge at that point. The growl of the Brabham can be heard over the screaming Lotus and squealing tyres but it is not easy to tell where Hristo was. Obviously King Hiro would have been better off staying wide and not attacking the second apex but when racing most drivers (apart from the very best) this would have been unnecessary.

Server replay time: 0h04m44s

Lap 3 - Hella Kurve - Arf Arf Arf and Ronnie Peterson
Arf closes on Ronnie down the finish straight and pulls out of the slipstream to make a pass on the inside at Hella Kurve. Contact is made and Ronnie spins into the armco barrier and out of the race. Arf has to take to the grass and looses a place but manages to continue.

Arf had about 80% overlap at turn-in so he was entitled to fight for the corner.

Ronnie couldn't see Arf and given they were both in Coopers he couldn't be heard clearly either. However, Arf was visible in Ronnie's mirrors when he made the move so Ronnie should have realized he was there and left room. However it recognised that it is very difficult to take a slightly wider than normal line into a fast blind bend like the Heller Kurve without risking running wide and going off the track.

Season 24 Works Trophy (67) - Round 2 - Zeltweg

The second round of the season will be at Zeltweg in Austria or should I say the Österreichring.  I assume we use the Zeltweg name because the German umlaut isn't allowed in a windows path, at least not on my "English" PC.  Originally built in 1969 to replace the bland and bumpy Zeltweg Airfield circuit, the Österreichring track was known for being very fast, as every corner was a fast sweeper and taken in no lower than 3rd gear in a 5-speed gearbox and 4th in a 6-speed gearbox.  There are also noticeable changes in elevation during the course of a lap which means the downhill sections are even faster. Like most fast circuits it was a hard circuit on engines and even harder on tyres simply because the speeds were so consistently high.

Driver lists and token rules can be found on the championship standings page
The track can be downloaded from : here - please note this is NOT the problematic 1970 version.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

The race will be run under PRO rules so no resets are allowed.

The chassis token system is explained on the Works standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start line to the exit of Bosch Kurve. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

Last night we had some laps here...

John Bradbury had some frame drop issues, so I looked for a light version and found this

I always had some probs with Zeltweg myself, especially at Bosh Curve..How exactly are we supposed to use that Axel? Just extract it to the track folder? I dont think it is a new track altogether?

I'm a !@#$%^&* noob. I've locked rear wheels at T1 and spun. Unfortunately Dave had no way to go and we've crashed. I'm sorry for what happened Dave.

So early in the race, top of the hill, blind crest, hardest corner to get right, not sure it was the wisest place for someone to make a pass  Huh  But hopefully your in better shape than me.  Good luck to you and everyone else. Early night for me. See you all at the next round.

fun those 2.5 laps it lasted . H came on my inside last turn l3  but I was sure he was gonna attack on straight. And I would have let him by. I m amazed how the brab could glue the inside and go so quick..that was after I hit him when choosing fastest line out. I lost a wheel.  20 tokens wasted. guess I need more races before I m warm.

Sorry, Tom, but you went wide and I just took advantage of that by going for the inside, which is a line I normally try to take anyway, and the Brabham makes it quite easy to do so. After that I tried to keep as much to the inside as possible, but I guess you sort of turned towards my car, not expecting me to be there, and it was enough to send you off to the armco.  Sad

Thats true I thought in worst case I would cut you off, but was sure you were further behind. Why I didn t verify this by using the 135 degrees view I have mapped the steeringwheels gearpads is a mystery to me.

Well I don't know for you but I find it impossible to look left-right while negotiating a corner.

Grats to  John for a triumphant return to UKGPL. I was rather hoping that his absence had knocked the edge off his speed  Roll Eyes, but that seems a folorn hope now Undecided.

Hristo and John set a pace that I just could not match. All those years driving the Waza means that I am still learning how to drive green cars Wink. At least it should raise my GPLrank now that I am improving my times on other cars...maybe.

Fulvio was chasing me in the early laps and although I pulled away and generated a nice comfy gap I was never completely at ease. Twice during the race the extra grunt of the Brabham caught me out and I performed a 360 spin, fortunately without any contact with barriers. Each time I was far enough ahead of Fulvio to keep my 3rd place and ease away again. Then in the final laps , when I had resigned myself to a 3rd place on the podium, Hristo's name on prib suddenly dropped behind me and I was promoted to 2nd  Grin.

Grats to all finishers and for the general pace of everyone. I don't think anyone was lapped?? at least I did not see anyone.

Now apologies...

I had disabled my AV before the race but still suffered a CTD during qually, with the dreaded sound loop requiring a turn off the power to the computer to shut down and restart. Fortunately there was time to rejoin the server. I hope it did not impact upon anyone else.

Apparently I was warping at the start of the race? from my client view everything was OK although my frame rate dropped very low in some places and I was worried about being disco'd. So again, apologies for anyone I frightened.

Everything was fine until about 10 laps from the end when I performed a spin on the final corner and ran over the rumble strips. Then the sound became more and more corrupted over the final laps until I had to turn it off completely to preserve my sanity. I drove the last laps on instruments as I could no longer hear the engine note and my lap times dropped slightly.

I have done a registry clean up and defragged etc. I ran "End-it-All" before the race and now I think I need to dig into the .ini file to check various things. Would the bandwidth settings be a likely culprit for the discos and warping? I am a total numpty on these things, so answers in non tech speak appreciated.

I guess the other option is a total re-install of GPL?, but I cannot help feeling that these issues are caused more by some other software/update causing a conflict rather than GPL itself. But, what the heck do I know??  Roll Eyes
