Moderator's Report

SUMMARY
Congratulations to Skymole on a maiden win in the prestigious Works Trophy, the pinnacle of racing in UKGPL. He was pushed all the way by Bob Whitwell, who despite putting in the fastest lap, made too many small errors to trouble Skymole. Andrew Livingstone grabbed the final podium place after an eventful drive through the field.

Server replay time: 0h01m35s

Lap 1 - Sunset Bend - Doni Yourth and Phil Thornton
Doni is much faster than Phil into Sunset and tries to go for the inside line as Phil is moving towards the apex. Contact is made and both cars spin off. Phil is able to continue but Doni loses a wheel on the armco and is out of the race.

Although much slower, Phil was entitled to take the racing line as Doni was still five car lengths behind at turn in. Doni wasn't actually attempting a pass , he was simply caught out by the difference in speed and whilst he tried to slow down he couldn't avoid clipping Phil's offside rear wheel.

Server replay time: 0h04m44s

Lap 3 - Esses - Axel Cookie, Arf Arf Arf and Evil Clive
Cookie is pushing hard and spins on the exit of the Esses. Arf tries to take avoiding action but has nowhere to go and contact is made. Both cars collide with the armco and suffer terminal damage. Evil is next along and he can't avoid the carnage either. He also looses a wheel and is out of the race.

No driver was to blame here. Neither Arf of Evil were driving too close to the car in front and Axel can't be blamed for a simple spin.

Server replay time: 0h44m35s

Lap 32 - Esses - Fulvio Policardi and David Rainier
Fulvio gets an excellent drive out of Clubhouse Bend and manages to get alongside David in the braking zone for the Esses. Fulvio has over 50% overlap at turn-in and has effectively won the corner. David tries to maintain the racing line but warp contact is made with Fulvio's offside rear wheel and David is punted off onto the grass.

Fulvio pulled off a perfectly fair overtake, he had plenty of overlap at turn-in and didn't run wide. In fact he managed to hit the apex on the first part of the Esses and maintain the perfect racing line for the second part.

David was probably caught out by Fulvio's move and was unlucky to experience some warp contact.

Dave, just to clarify. I did the move only cause you had a moment accelerating out of Club. If you hadn't I surely wouldn't have tried to go inside there and I would have tried to draft you on the straight. I'll send my replay clip so mods will have a word. Anyway I had a bitter taste when I didn't see you in my mirrors, sorry again.

Reasonably happy with my performance last night, grats to sky, who after the first few laps really turned it on and chased me down.  I was wondering where you were quicker than me and expected to have a grandstand view after you blasted by, but a spin not only let you through but gave you a reasonable gap.  I then ran off the road in T1 before beginning the chase.

I actually thought I was running a reasonable pace to start with but decided there was more to be had in a few corners and tried to turn the wick up.  This was successful for a few laps where I dipped into the 1:20.4s.  After trimming sky's lead by half, I then had a spin at the esses (I think) and pretty much decided to bring it home from there.  We were both well clear so could afford to cool off a bit and not risk the engine.

Quite happy with the evening, did little praccy and managed a pb to take the pole (though some fast guys notable by their absence).  Also got the FL but crucially no win...

Bob

P.S You were quick in practice Cookie, be great if you carried on with the 67s, they're certainly a challenge but I think they are also good training for the other mods.

I am also quite happy with my peformance... My qualifiyng time was almost a second off my pb, but it was enough for second, I guess because the fastest drivers were driving hondas, missing or not having enough practice at season start... in race tho, after the tyres got some heat in them, I was actually much faster than in qually... I seem to feel more comfortable with more fuel in the car, making it more planted. Started to catch up to Baab, and was not sure if I could ever past him - my abysmal upshifts gave him speed advantage on the straight... then he span, maybe several times really, which gave me a nice lead. With 10-25 laps to go he got up to speed again with the lighter fuel load, and I still didnt allow myself to relax... then the gap was suddenly huge again.

Unfortunately that will probably be the best race of the season for me... kyalami is definetly the track I preform best on...not sure if nuburgring, monaco or bremgarden are in the track list, I would do reasonably well on those I guess...   I think I lose concentration too easely on the other tracks, maybe something I should work on.

Cookie. I agree with the others, no reason to leave Works, just work on smoothness and consistency rather than lap time.

Sky - congrats on your first Works win, wish I could manage that. Given that other sporting Scots have removed monkeys off their backs recently, maybe this is the year......

TBH Arf, I have some good reasons to leave Works

- I have not done more than 20 67's races in my whole GPL career,
- I am still learning to understand these beasts and have not yet found "save" setups for me
- I have to keep 150% of concentration in a 67 race and so I fail under pressure.

Maybe another season with the Privateers gives me more experience and confidence Wink

I've uploaded my onboard from this race: Kyalami in a Bloody Waza. The "Highlights" video should be tomorrow(if nothing goes wrong).

- I've done 9 Tongue and it was in first season of "Graduates Cup" so I had to race under Pro rules Wink
- Stop using weird setups from alien hotlappers. Go witch some balanced ones. I personally started with setups from Alison Hine
- There is a solution for that. Instead of overdriving the car while trying to keep up with faster drivers, find your own pace/rhythm and stick to it. That's how I've got all my podiums(ok, there is no that many of them Wink )

Thanks Bartosz,
I think with ~half the age I would have had no problem too...

I have no problems with pro mode, I don't even notice any difference in a race, I don't like the use of S+R and prefer to quit a race...

I mostly use the setups of Masaki Asano as a basis wich are known as well balanced.
But I love to try the Steve Cloyd and John Bradbury setups as a reference to learn from.

Same here, thats my aim! It's exactly how I gained my good positions in 65's pros Grin

The sundays race disaster was in the 3rd lap when my tires were still not optimal, and I had a hard pressing Arf Arf Arf in my back...

So basically you need to gain experience in racing in traffic. Well, you won't learn that in Privateers,. That's because most fast guys from last season are now racing in Works Wink

There is no right or wrong with setups. I've seen vastly different setups from people who are otherwise doing identical lap times. It's all about fitting your personal preference, driving style, habits, etc. And it's really helpful to not just copy a setup, but tweak it on your own. And one more thing - most setups around are for hotlapping, not races. They overheat the tires after 1-2 laps and are rather imbalanced with more fuel. Have you tried any of my 67 setups? I try to opt for neutral balance, at least with the suspension. You can always change the diff and brake bias to suit your driving style, but the suspension is what makes the difference.

I agree with the others that you should not just give up racing in Works, because you gain a lot more valuable experience with the challenge here.
