Season 25 Friday Trophy - Rounds 1 & 2 - Kyalami

South Africa, Kyalami. Classic track, long time home of formula 1 in the Southern hemisphere.

The original, sweeping circuit was in use from 1961 until political sanctions eliminated the Grand Prix after the 1985 race. A very quick circuit, it yielded some memorable races. Gilles Villeneuve outfoxed team mate and home driver Jody Scheckter in a wet/dry race in 1979, and Alain Prost raced from the back to win in 1982. By the time the circuit held its last Grand Prix in its original incarnation cars were lapping the track in 1m 02s – 20 seconds faster than in 1967, a lap time in the 1m 02s might not quite be obtainable.

PLEASE READ THIS. IT EXPLAINS THE FORMAT THAT THIS 20 RACE SERIES WILL USE.

Please refer to the list of tracks on the "Announcements" page for the Friday Trophy.

This is really designed to be a fun series with 4 different car mods running 2 sprint length races each Friday.
The first week will be F2's and 69x cars and the second week will be GT's and Can Ams.
In each category there is a choice of 4 cars for drivers from the Heavy brigade, but the Lights will be limited to a choice of 2 cars. ( see the list below)

The first race at each circuit on the schedule will always be F2 so that makes it easier to learn the track and the first qually session will start at approx 20:45 for 20mins. Race starts at approx 21:05
The second race will be for 69x cars with another 20minute qually and a 25 minute race.

The following Friday we will do the same again but with Gt's and Can Ams on the same track.

There is a single S/R allowed and you DO NOT need to perform a Stop and Go. It would be nice if those who cause an accident allow the innocent victims to regain their position when you rejoin the racing.

These cars are for the first half of the season including the races at MOON. There will be different sets of cars for the second half of the season.

So, the last 2 cars are for the Lights and the Heavies can chose any car from the list of 4 if they wish. Please be honest and choose a car that suits your ability. The aim is to have some very close racing.

Cars for F2            Brab BT23 and Lotus,               Cooper and Ferrari

Cars for 69X          Lotus 49b and Matra MS80        Mclaren M9A and BRM P126/139

Cars for GT           Chap 2F Porsche 910                Mirage M1 and Ford Mk2B

Cars for Can Am     Mclaren M8D and Lola 260         Porsche 917/10 and Ferrari 712M

If it proves that the handicap for the lights is too harsh in any of the categories, I might consider changing the cars, but let us wait and see how things work out. I suspect that the Lights will still be quick.

Eh?  If qually is 20mins,  does this mean part-timers can join initially [for up to 5mins max] but must leave when 15mins remain - then can rejoin after 5mins for the last 10mins?
Otherwise to get the rest of the 30mins, you need to add 'tardis' to the permitted vehicle list.

LAP ONE RED ZONE: Full moderation from race start to the exit of Moss.

Admittedly I don't know the corners anywhere - but I know there's a Moss at Mosport.  Maybe that is just coincidence? Smiley

Cheers,
Dave.

I was just testing to see if members were reading the whole post......honest I was!  Roll Eyes

Ok, so reserve drivers just need to check that all of the full time brigade have joined the track. I will amend the timings, but it is a short qually so splitting it up is difficult.

Moss is indeed at Mosport, but if you get Barbecue bend totally wrong it is possible to end up in the trees at Moss.I think I have done that more than once

Aha, thanks for the clarification.  I suppose that if I'd just been prepared to commit to more attendances,  then I'd have just not read that part anyway!  There again,  I am slightly disappointed to see the (red) Lola is not an option.

Luckily I've managed to get additional mileage out of that Moss thing, for very little investment Smiley

Cheers,
Dave.

The canam cars for heavys is Mcl D and Lola 260, why not the Mcl F and Lola 260? They are the two best cars.

I have tried to balance the cars available to the heavies with those available to the Lights.

There is no doubt that ( just as in real life back in 1970) that the Mclaren F was the fastest car and that the Lola 260 is probably one of the next fastest cars along with the D. This series is not just about handicaps, it is a spec series that attempts to match up cars that might not normally be raced ( because normally everyone selects the fastest car that they can find?) It is a problem to find 2 pairs of cars that provide a reasonable chance of equalising the Heavy/Light abilities because there is a broad spectrum of ability in both camps.

I am trying to give both groups of drivers cars that present a small challenge but should provide some balanced racing. Plus it gives you the opportunity to experiment with different cars/setups without putting yourself at a disadvantage against drivers of similar speed. Something that you might not attempt in a true championship?  Roll Eyes

Please remember that this is intended to be more of a FUN series to accommodate the mods that do not have their own championship this season because there are just not enough evening/server slots available.

My hope is that drivers entering this series will select a car that is in line with their ability, so that those at the Novice end will take what they perceive to be the fastest car and the Aliens will take the slower car and hope to extract the maximum performance from it.

At half way in this series I will change the cars available for the last 10 races in all 4 of the mods

 IMPORTANT NOTICE.

I MADE A MISTAKE REGARDING THE S/R RULES FOR THIS SERIES AND AXEL HAS POINTED OUT MY ERROR.

THERE IS ONLY A SINGLE RESET ALLOWED BUT YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO A STOP AND GO.

I was looking forward to the 69x- I somehow qualified 1st ( I think the ms80 was much better than most) but really struggled for 2 or 3 laps even offline until things warmed up before I could push. I had a spin getting too close to the chap in front but then got disco'd.... never mind ... good while it lasted, thanks all.

F2's
I was a little surprised at the car choice in the F2's amongst the light brigade as everyone went for the Cooper. Yes on paper it appears to have more horses and if I had not done a short private practice on Thursday evening I might well have rolled up at Kyalami and taken the obvious car. But when I tried the Fezza I found that what it lacked in outright speed it compensated for in handling...a little like the BT7 in the 65's. So I spent 30 minutes tweaking gears and diffs to exploit the corners and only worried about a 5th gear being long enough to allow some slipstreaming on the straight.
As always, I test and qually on race fuel whenever I think that I can still be somewhere near the front of the grid and only do pure qually fuel loads if I feel I am too far back.
The early laps were great fun with Ronnie and Tom using the power advantage of their Coopers , whilst I made up the ground through the twisty bits. The lead was swapped a few times and it seemed that there was no escape for any of us because of the huge slipstream advantage down that straight.
Then we began to catch a backmarker ( no names here  Wink ) and something told me to ease back and allow a little room.....just in case things get frantic. Although this dropped me back towards Tom running a strong 3rd place at this point, it felt the safer thing to do. Ronnie caught the aforesaid backmarker as they entered T1 just as the poor individual lost control of his rear end and managed a perfect half spin and road block. Ronnie could not avoid the inevitable contact and even though I had allowed some more space I barely squeezed through. I'm not sure what happened behind but my next glance in the mirrors showed that I now had a good gap and I might just be able to make a run for the flag. A good plan if I had stuck to it! But with about 8 laps left I wondered if I could take some corners in 3rd instead of 2nd......bad idea to change what was working so well before  Undecided.
A couple of excursions onto the grass and several corners where I outbraked myself and Tom was closing in far too quickly. I just could not regain my rhythm and pace and was losing up to a second a lap which allowed Tom to get behind and draft past with one lap to go.
Grats to Tom for a great chase and consistant pace and commiserations to Ronnie who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

69X
That was a very respectable pole time Johnny, even allowing for the fact that the MS80 is one of the quicker cars. I think I agree with your observation about tyres, as I also found that they needed a couple of laps to yield some grip. Unless we are both imagining things  Roll Eyes I think that is one difference between the old 69 mod and the newer 69x cars.

Sorry to see you disco as you had proved in quali that you had the pace in that car to lap with the front of the field, although your race almost ended at T1!!! You got a better start than I did so I tucked into the slipstream going down to T1. I anticipated that you might brake a little earlier than I would and prepared myself to do the same....... BUT NOT THAT EARLY  scared!!!!! lol I had just enough time to ease off the brakes enough to allow some steering and jink to the inside, so avoiding what looked like a terminal rear ending for you and undoubtedly a wopping penalty for me. All I had to do then was get the car into T1 on a very tight line with an approach speed about 20% faster than I would have liked. I'm still not sure how I pulled that off!! Shocked But I emerged in the lead with a small gap, so I pushed as hard as I dared on cold tyres to get away before the straight.
From then on it was just the usual struggle to maintain concentration ( which incidentally failed several times lol) to get to the flag, The biggest scare was when I looked at Prib with about 7 laps to go and Dean was taking huge chunks out of my lead!! Not sure where he found that pace so suddenly, but then he dropped off the leader board and I was able to relax.

Interesting that the most successful car amongst the lights was the Mclaren with (added drinks trays) even though the laptimes on GPLRank suggest that the BRM is about 1.5secs quicker around here??! Dean did manage the FL in a BRM so maybe there is more to come from that car?

Thanks to all those who took part, I hope you had some fun racing.
I realise that it is only the first race, but please give your feedback about the car choices.  As always any of your views are bound to be subjective but as I intend to change the cars for the 2nd half of the season there might be a better balance to be struck between the Lights and Heavies?

Grats to Tom, Clive and Dean for your respective podium slots in both races.

Race 1 for sure it was just a matter of wrong place at the wrong time otherwise I would have hoped to have been in the mix at the end. As for Race 2 my race was scuppered by the tight grid and the need to shut off completely to avoid the car in front of me at the start. Might I suggest we use loose grids in all series this time round to avoid the inevitable rear end shunts that we saw last season.

But great racing and this for sure looks like being the fun series of the season, thanks for setting it up.

I was in the mood for racing after a long break and ready for fun. Little did I know about the outstanding outcome.
My carchoices were random as I never looked the specs. I was hugely surprised to see how far up the grid I qualified both races.
F2 I aimed for podium, and after Ronnies unlucky crash I had second almost  in my pocket as The cars behind me lost more than me in the Havoc.
I dont think the gap between Evil and me ever reached more than 2 secs but I could not gain until the 17 th lap I did very well whilst Evil s was medio and I got the fantastic feeling of doing the last lap pass.
69x was more lonely since many cars did some nudging , but a superfast Dean woke me up. I just had to see him go, but I must admit I didn t cry when he ran out of fuel  devil
1 st and second was great , but I must admit I had a potion of luck getting through some spinning cars.
